It's probably because the vast majority of western MMOs are on the F2P model and even WoW, grandaddy of them all, seems to be headed in that direction.

They all make money somehow, so I'm sure they'd be able to adapt. Question is, will the western Wii U userbase be large enough to justify it? Who knows. I certainly hope so.

The thing is that WoW has a userbase to support it. Other games are made by studios that work off / have been working off the F2P model.

That and in the West DQ Id have to say does not have a large enough following to attempt a risk like F2P which means they would have to rework the games mechanics, unless they already have it set up. Which I doubt.

I'd love for Nintendo and SE to find some nonsubscription based profit model for this game in the west. There's the initial purchase and future dlc. Does the game have ingame microtransactions?

Not at the moment. No idea if any is planned. There are special items, but those are all from promotional type of deals where a code is entered from voucher received.

I really cant wait for the whole F2P fad dies off, since its an unhealthy mentality not to mention effects design of games. Then again its always been around (mainly asia at start), just that its gotten more popular as being an easier way to entice people to play and then blow cash on impulse purchases.

Not to mention people dont realize they go spending more on the whole F2P type of micro-transaction model than they would on actually purchasing the game and paying a monthly fee. Which brings us to the reason why a lot of companies are trying to jump on that bandwagon hence the flood of F2P games out there now.

Anyways thats about all I have to say on the issue.

chances this comes out to US?
None at the moment. This just came out in Japan last week Thursday.

I don't think the game will go free to play. The inital purchase and dlc will have a price attached. But I've never paid a subscription for any game and I really don't want to start with this game. Though maybe a subscription is better than nickel and diming folks.

10 a month isnt that bad once again. Seriously I spend more money getting my ass to work on a daily basis than I do on this game. For the quality involved it would be a damned shame seeing it going the F2P route.

Also would hate to see what a F2P model would do to the games design. It wouldnt be DQ anymore thats for sure. Unless they made it that just useless special junk is sold. But that also means either stuff being locked away for micro transaction only or more work involved constantly making the new content which also costs $$$. Really would ruin the games design overall Id say.

Subscription-driven MMOs are a really good value for anybody who plays a fair amount. Most people just don't stop to think about that, and that's why sub-driven MMOs are becoming extinct - because people aren't buying into it anymore.

This isnt aimed at anyone here, but more my thoughts on the issue in general. Id have to say the change is more with the whole "entitled" attitude than anything. People want better things, yet want it cheaper, faster, etc. Seriously in a whole I shake my head at the way society in general is going.

Anyways, less talk of doom and gloom from me and more of how awesome DQX is lol

I've never been interested in mmos and hated the idea of having a subscription to play a game. I actually really want to play DQX and I have no issue with paying any reasonable subscription fees. Funny how that works out.

When I watch videos of the game, I think "They want me to pay a monthly fee for this?" All I see are relatively dull zones full of monsters, no pvp, no dungeons, and no raids. For whats in the game right now, there's absolutely nothing in this game that justifies a monthly fee. I just don't see it being successful in the west unless they get rid of it.

Quick question, are they still doing that "Kids Hours" thing and if so around what time are they in the US? Kinda interested in importing, but not sure about doing a monthly Sub.

time to go and get myself killed trying to reach the armor crafting guild. Its odd that they put the place in such a high level location.

Ok apparently you cant switch your crafting skill job once you go past lv 10. So I suggest you think hard about what you want to do first.

Got pissed off so made a dwarf also just to do armor crafting too. Will waste so much time getting him to the level to get to that friggin town though since the area its in is pretty high level. 20+

To explain it in a short way, it feels like a game and not a job once again. Which is nice, since its easy to just pop in and play.

.
That's pretty interesting: I stopped playing dq6 remake at midgame and now I cannot reprise.
The job system and not knowing where to go kill my strength to see the ending lol

Whats interesting is Im seeing people making different NPC parties to help assist with different monster types. More physical for magic resistant, more magic for physical resistant etc.

I haven't been grinding that much, just wandering around checking out the various capital cities and what not. I'm level 10 at the moment. So probably a bit bhind other people.

I'm inclined to agree with Aeana really, it's a good value if you play a lot... but when you don't it's a terrible waste, and certainly you won't do it on multiple games because why do that when you could just focus on the one and get your money's worth? Which is actually something of a hidden third angle: people are already paying for WoW, or maybe something else of their choice, and as such have no desire to lump on a second subscription. It's probably also the reason why WoW's success can't be replicated, at least by a WoW clone: that market's tapped, you need to find another. And honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if DQX found that market, but only in Japan. We'll see what happens in the US, maybe Nintendo can work their magic and find this not-WoW(/FFXI) crowd, certainly I'm more eager to for this than anything else.

Similarly, I feel kinda bad when I squander months of Netflix, but at least I feel like I'm keeping the door open to broaden my film literacy as it were, not to mention streaming gets plenty of use. Don't feel I could use similar rationale for an MMO, they can be nightmarish time sinks.

thanks gloam

I need to go read up on this game, are the races balanced well or is there weaker vs stronger ones?

There isnt really a racial balance or much of a difference besides looks.

Money isn't hard to come by if you sell things and do the crafting mini games, monsters don't drop that much gold though. At least not yet...

The crafting actually doesnt make that much cash since its always a rush with the idiots who sell things cheaper than it is to make them. Unless you are really good at the armor crafting since thats what sells pretty good. But then you need to spend a lot of time collecting resources. Also most of the lower tier crafted items are not worth that much to peddle or sell to the vendor so you need to make stuff thats from lv 14 and up to make worthwhile $$$ in terms of resources put in to profit made out.

Though I suppose it depends on what class you are, since some spend less $$$ than others. Fighters seem to be the most expensive to support currently.

Truthfully what you speak of though is when one joins a subscription and doesnt have his schedule managed. Its no different than if you join a gym and dont go. Not the game nor the gyms fault that you are not getting the most out of your $$$.

Are you guys finding yourself rushing through this? I would think MMOs take years of your life and bits and pieces :)

Everyone is different / goals / playstyles etc. So no real answer there. Im just leveling since need to move the story on plus makes a lot of other things easier. That and starting to need higher end resources for crafting, which means need to push into new higher level zones in search of new locations to harvest. Still this game isnt something you are just going to be done with in a short period of time. MMOs generally never are. Which I suppose is what makes them so interesting. Everyone has a chance to play for different reasons.

Once you get to a hub town you can catch the train to any of the other hub locations for a one way price of 100G. Yes there still are things that will kill you if you dont pay attention and properly check the strength of monsters before a fight.

And even i am moderately surprised
I still havent played much - about 3 hours or so online
but i'm starting to click that i went in expecting "something" when i was getting "something else"

the biggest thing about this so far is that it is -fun- to play.

Enjoying it once i stopped expecting it to be something its not.

Glad to hear you changed your tone on it. Im quite enjoying the game, the world is varied Ill give it that. Am currently in the Japanese type of area for the Elves killing crazy looking monsters here.

Just managed to hit lv 27.

I'll play the WiiU version if that ever gets released in the US, even though I'm not at all an MMO guy. So, to reiterate, there is an actual end to this game with a storyline? Even if it's an MMO?

This news article points towards an 'end' to the story. Though I imagine expansions and downloadable quests will mean that smaller stories will continue on over time.

My copy is on its way too. EMS is supposed to take 2-3 days but you can bet on the German postal office and customs to make sure that deadline won't be met. Expecting it on Thursday, at the earliest. :(

Gloam, did you ever have to connect to the Wii Shop to play online?

That reminds me. I was wondering if you misunderstood my post yesterday. The reason why you can't connect to the JP shop is most likely because you converted the region of your shop channel without deleting your account from the Wii first. You have to do that. But it also means that you lose all of your purchases - permanently - so it's something you have to weigh the pros and cons of.

If it were me, I would just wait and see if you can enter the credit card details directly before resorting to wiping the shop.

This game is a lot easier than FFXI. FFXI was a pain in the ass just to be a pain in the ass which is why I didnt like the design. I fault the creators for that since they were fans of EQ which is why a lot of the early mechanics were based off of that broken ass MMO. Such as the conning system not working, exp loss / level down etc.

...

Overall I can see this being a much better game than XI. Esp when things like the casino and colosseum open for business. If anything Im finding it much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

That's disappointing though. :( Everything you disliked about FFXI, either I didn't have the same problems, or I enjoyed it. I really liked the fact that you'd lose xp when you died in XI, and that you were basically forced to party to get anything done. I know I'm the odd man out with that logic.

Depending on when this game comes to the US and how much I enjoy FFXIV v2.0, I may look into this. It doesn't really sound like anything is going to give me that classic FFXI experience that I enjoyed so much. :(

Just watched some stream videos.

If they ever release a US version I hope it'll be for WiiU. This game would look great in HD, I'd be all in.

As much as I'd like to see the game in HD, I'd rather not have to buy a new console just to play it. Nothing on the WiiU interests me at the moment, so I'll be fine with the Wii version of this.

I guess now I know which race not to play.

Serious irrational hatred of circuses and carnivals in this post.

Not a big fan of
circuses
either, but those little guys sure are adorable, the bear ears especially have had my "d'awing" for hours.

I prefer playing small races, so I was really considering that one, but I think I'm gonna go with elf. Actually, I haven't looked into the differences between the races beyond appearance yet. It's something I would have done leading up to release had I not convinced myself I wouldn't be able to play it.

As far as I know, it's something like Ogre for Warrior/Gladiator, Elf for Priest/Cleric, Puklipo for Entertainer/Thief, Wedi's are all rounders, not so sure on dwarves. Yuji Horii played a dwarf warrior with a big axe so... All the other classes I mentioned are based on seeing people in the game using those combos.

Works for me; I'd be playing priest anyway.
