The one-hour drama series WESTWORLD kicks off its ten-episode season SUNDAY, OCT. 2 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT), exclusively on HBO. Created for television by Jonathan Nolan (“Interstellar,” “The Dark Knight,” “Person of Interest”) and Lisa Joy (“Pushing Daisies,” “Burn Notice”), both of whom are executive producing and writing, with Nolan also directing, the series was inspired by the 1973 motion picture “Westworld,” written and directed by Michael Crichton.

WESTWORLD is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin, exploring a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.

Co-creator Nolan explains, “Building on the incredibly evocative concept of the original film, we wanted to pose the question: If you could be completely immersed in a fantasy, one in which you could do whatever you wanted, would you discover things about yourself that you didn’t want to know?”

Co-creator Joy adds, “We also wanted to explore what it means to be human from the outside in - through the eyes of the ‘hosts’: the lifelike AI characters that are the main attractions of the park. It’s a meditation on consciousness - the blessing and the burden of it?—?beautifully portrayed by our remarkable cast.”

WESTWORLD stars Anthony Hopkins (Academy Award® winner for “The Silence of the Lambs”; Academy Award® nominee for “Remains of the Day,” “Nixon,” “Amistad”), Ed Harris (Golden Globe winner and Emmy® nominee for HBO’s “Game Change”; Academy Award® nominee for “Pollock,” “Apollo 13”), Evan Rachel Wood (Golden Globe nominee for “Thirteen”; Emmy® and Golden Globe nominee for HBO’s “Mildred Pierce”), James Marsden (the “X-Men” films), Thandie Newton (“Mission: Impossible II”) and Jeffrey Wright (HBO’s “Confirmation”; Emmy® and Golden Globe winner for HBO’s “Angels in America”).

The series also stars Tessa Thompson (“Creed”), Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Borgen”), Jimmi Simpson (HBO’s “The Newsroom”), Rodrigo Santoro (“Focus,” “The 33”), Shannon Woodward (“Raising Hope”), Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (“Chernobyl Diaries”), Ben Barnes (“The Chronicles of Narnia” films), Simon Quarterman (“The Devil Inside”), Angela Sarafyan (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”), Luke Hemsworth (“Infini”) and Clifton Collins, Jr. (“Star Trek”).

Among WESTWORLD’s main players are: Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), the brilliant, taciturn and complicated creative director, chief programmer and founder of Westworld, who has an uncompromising creative vision for the park. The Man in Black (Ed Harris) is the distillation of pure villainy into one man. Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) is a provincial, beautiful and kind rancher’s daughter, who begins to discover that her entire idyllic existence is an elaborately constructed lie.

Teddy Flood (James Marsden), a new arrival to a small frontier town, quickly proves both his charm and talent with a revolver. Beautiful, razor-sharp madam Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) has a genius for reading people and a knack for survival, but her seen-it-all-before worldview is about to be challenged. Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright) is the brilliant and quixotic head of the park’s Programming Division, whose keen observation of human nature provides him with boundless inspiration for his life’s work: creating artificial people.

Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) is a mysterious and savvy provocateur with a unique perspective on Westworld. Theresa Cullen (Sidse Babett Knudsen), Westworld’s head of Quality Assurance, is responsible for keeping the park from sliding into unscripted chaos. A first-time visitor, William (Jimmi Simpson) is initially wary of the park’s more lascivious attractions, but slowly uncovers a deeper meaning.

Hector Escaton (Rodrigo Santoro), Westworld’s perennial “most wanted” bandit, subscribes to the theory that the West is a wild place, and the only way to survive is to embrace the role of predator. Elsie Hughes (Shannon Woodward), a sardonic rising star in the Behavior Department, is charged with diagnosing the odd quirks of behavior in the park’s hosts. Armistice (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) is a savage fighter and brutal bandit, whose ruthlessness is surpassed only by her abiding loyalty to her fellow outlaws.

Logan (Ben Barnes) is a veteran guest whose hedonistic romp through the park is equally motivated by self-indulgence and a desire to help his friend, William. Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) is the head of Narrative, whose storylines tantalize the guests, while his temperament grates on his colleagues. Clementine Pennyfeather (Angela Sarafyan), one of Westworld’s most popular attractions, is perfectly beguiling, by design.

Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) is the no-nonsense head of Security, charged with monitoring host and human interactions and ensuring the safety of the guests. Lawrence (Clifton Collins, Jr.), a charming but lethal outlaw, has a knack for maneuvering and negotiating the various criminal elements of Westworld.

WESTWORLD was inspired by the motion picture “Westworld,” written and directed by Michael Crichton. Production companies, Kilter Films, Bad Robot Productions, and Jerry Weintraub Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer/writer/director, Jonathan Nolan; executive producer/writer, Lisa Joy; executive producers, J.J. Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, Bryan Burk
Includes an expanded cast list and blurbs on a few of the key players.

It's got the man from Source Code, basically playing the same character as he was from Source Code (from the look of the teaser).

Sci fi written by Jonah Nolan, with excellent actors and great cinematography? You don't have to convince me to watch this.

Not a novel premise at all, but everything else looked on point. And it's not like HBO has anything else going on, I'm in.

So, do when know what the results of the production halt/shakeup was? Have the initial episodes been reworked, or should we expect some significant change in focus a few episodes in?

Looks great. I just realised how empty HBO's drama line up is looking (especially with GOT and The Leftovers ending soon). Hopefully this doesn't disappoint.

Netflix are still waiting for a Wire / Sopranos caliber show, but they really have become the new HBO.

Going by the trailer, I get the sense that the machines don't malfunction and start massacring but rather the AI will revolt against their creators. I just hope we get faceless terminator Harris like in the original movie

Nolan had a bit to say about it in a preview from this month's Empire magazine.

It is more like a ten-hour movie than a TV series, so being able to write and produce simultaneously, which is the conventional way of doing TV, proved very difficult. The network gave us a chance to stop, write the remaining episodes, then shoot them all at once.

That makes me wish it was releasing on Netflix. Sounds like the typical week-by-week format might not dovetail with the pacing of the show

So AI uprising with the old west as window dressing. Could be interesting. Difficult to judge the writing from a trailer. Wonder if they will do the parallels to slavery as well given the setting.

Hopefully that's what actually happened and not just PR. Normally when a TV show stops production it means something very bad is going on behind the scenes, since you've got an entire crew on contract being paid to do nothing.

So outside of this and The Deuce, what exactly does HBO have lined up post GoT and Leftovers?

Seems they are about to have an enormous hole in Drama programing with those two leaving, True Detective on an indefinite hiatus and Vinyl getting canned. Maybe the biggest drought since The Sopranos/Sex in the City era?

Still shocked they passed up on what is looking like a great American Gods series on Starz. This show does look more promising then anything I have seen since True Detective so there is at least that.

And they passed on Fincher's Utopia. IIRC the drama department over there just got a shakeup so I'd expect them to coast on Thrones and pray Westworld is a hit while trying to come up with the next thing.

I'm sort of hoping the Gunslinger is relegated just to the first season and they branch out fairly well in subsequent seasons. The movie park also had multiple worlds but there doesn't seem to be any sign of that (though the other worlds weren't really required in the movie anyway).

Regardless, about the only way you can get me to watch anything with a Western theme is to wrap it in a sci-fi twist, so there's that.

So are we supposed to wonder who's real and who's android in the Western town? Obviously we know she's an android and Barnes is "a veteran", so likely the repeat visitor like James Brolin in the original.

I wonder if new seasons will give us the other two worlds.

Awesome! Really really looking forward to this. It seems like a pretty interesting premise, and I really want to know what happens with the blonde lady that has a fly walk on her in the trailer (by the way who is the actress that plays her?). Plus like others have said, HBO could do with a few more successful dramas. One of my most anticipated shows of Fall, that's for certain.

Any idea when The Leftovers Season 3 airs or have they not announced a date yet? Still watching Season 1.

According to Wikipedia they have something by Alan Ball (unnamed as of yet), then 4 shows in development. Also The Young Pope is coming out next year and is airing in Europe at the moment if memory serves.

They also released a quick video of other stuff they're going to be airing next year. It seems like there is quite a lot of stuff on the horizon but for now it might be a bit weak, and of course who knows how the stuff they release next year will be received. I agree with you, though: not picking up American Gods seems like it might've been a bad idea, and (personally speaking) more in the way of dramas a la The Sopranos would be real nice. Hopefully Westworld is the start of bigger things and a solid lineup for once GoT finishes.

Blonde woman is Evan Rachel Wood.
