Facebook required for all new Oculus users starting in Oct. All Oculus accounts end in 2023

I remember how annoyed I used to be at PS3 requiring me to log in to PSN to watch Netflix. I also remember being annoyed at NeoGAF for telling me that I needed to shut up about it because PSN accounts were free and that it wasn't a big deal. But considering I paid $600 for the hardware and I paid for a Netflix subscription and the internet access to use it I figured it wasn't any of Sony's damn business when I was watching Netflix. And Microsoft requiring Xbox Live Gold to access Netflix until 2014 was monumentally stupid.

I feel exactly the same way about this, except requiring a Facebook account be logged in to play video games in VR is even more stupid. "The account is free so what's the big deal?" A company forcing me to allow them to collect information about me is a big deal, especially if I'm paying for everything. And that's the only reason Facebook would require it. They're a data collection company.

I agree, Facebook sucks. But you posted pics about losing your purchases when deleting your account which is just not a big thing and is standard practise.

I have made a Facebook account to play on the Quest 2 and will not be posting on the Facebook account with my true belief's or anything at all, so this point is moot. I Just do not post.
Pretty much. I'd worry if I didn't lose my purchases upon deletion, that would mean they still keep data about me without my consent. I see this all over the net as "news" but it's just clickbait. We know a while now that moving forward for all new users (so all Quest 2 users agreed to it, it's on the box and everything) and at some point in the future old users, Oculus Store uses Facebook login. It goes without saying that losing access to said login means you lose all your stuff from that login, how else would they identify you if not by the login you chose? That's how it is on all platforms.

Also weird how people trusted Facebook with data including real names etc. via their credit/debit cards when the platform didn't use the Facebook name but still was by the same company since 2014, ie all retail Oculus products ever, lol. They can probably already identify who you are on Facebook for 90% of users.

Anyway, it's one thing to protest the merge/switch to Facebook (but you lost, it happened, try a lawsuit or move on already, it's old news), it's another and super dumb thing to have your mind blown and surprised and go omg when the merge/switch is a known fact that these things obviously come with the territory, lol.

Steam and Microsoft accounts and PSN and all gaming stuff (maybe not Nintendo's this gen) are social networks too, if you don't engage with that stuff on them (I don't) then don't engage with that stuff on Facebook either, just use your linkedin or whatever for that. Sheesh, what arbitrary non arguments and made up definitions.

Like people going all "it's a general computing device, not a console" when discussing the Apple/Epic lawsuit thing (which is all about a game, lol), like the less useful your device is the more you can restrict it further with no consequence but the moment you enable a browser or calculator you must open your closed ecosystem...

I am no Facebook fan.

I dislike being forced to make an account to use the Quest 2 and will jump ship as soon as there is a viable alternative, but this is just grabbing at straws. Your Facebook account is now your Oculus account, it is obvious that deleting your Facebook account will make you lose all your purchases.

Where's the outrage over these companies that do exactly the same thing?
People like me bought plenty of games WITHOUT a facebook account. when the oculus rift came out,
Then we linked the FB acount to it when we bought a quest2..
Now we lose our games. If we close this so called FB account.

That.. Is fucked up ;)

If you closed your Oculus account before Facebook intigration you would still lose your games and you knew the price of entry when you bought the Quest 2, I have had an Oculus account since the release of the CV1 and bought a lot of games before Facebook finally took over so I understand your feelings. I do not want a Facebook account but from what I can see its not a huge problem except for principles.

For most people it's not an issue, make an account and just ignore it. I won't be logging into Facebook and just use the Oculus app, as i said earlier Facebook already had my Name, Address, CC info on record with the Oculus app so it does not make much difference to me for now. We have to see what other shit Facebook will push on us.

Just curious, since FB bought Oculus.

For you guys who have Oculus, aside from being forced to make a FB account, has Zuckerberg forced any FB stuff onto you..... forced ads, news feeds that are VR game related, defaulting your acct's news feed to say "John Brown is playing Oculus", the or any other dumb shit where they are tying the brands together to make money off you?

Nah you miss the point.. Now facebook has taken my old oculus account games. That is more like nintendo forcing you to use google. And then taking all your past purchases hostage.
Either way i disabled all the telemetry so FB can really go fuck itself.

I don't miss your point, I said I was in the same boat and you and was pissed when Facebook said you had to have an account, but you knew that Facebook intigration was coming yet you still bought a Quest 2 and so did I.

I am not saying it does not suck, it does! But its not a big problem for now and the Quest 2 is good enough for me to jump through that hoop for now and you too apparently. Thanks for the link though, I am very interested in anything that blocks Facebook bullshit. I already use some apps to block Facebook shit, like Facebook Container in my browser.

I get it, protesting the merge itself is fine, it would be cool for every old Oculus user if you won even, but it's probably unwinnable and has no effect on Quest 2 onward, at most you'll probably manage to get a refund for games bought on the Oculus Store prior (so I never tell anyone to use for anything but exclusives, but there are no alterantives for stand-alone console VR mode). Being surprised at every little thing the merge brings with it is just silly when everything works like that. I think if twitter or google bought a console they'd put their own account on it too, even if the company running it initially had their own as they weren't part of the networks...

Guess those tweeter guys are just reddit/internet crawling and taking anything said ever about bad fb accounts as fact spreading it as happening to everyone, lol.

Who knows but I believe FB will force something. I had a FB account closed years ago and suddenly getting an email yesterday asking that I am having trouble logging and FB trying to "help" me log in to an already deactivated account.

Luckily I only borrowed my brother's Oculus unit and didn't bother using it again knowing that I am required to register with Facebook to fully utilize the content. I am not surprise why my brother stop using it because of the ridiculous FB registration requirement.

Necro bump or not, this requirement sucks. It's basically what is preventing me from getting an Oculus Quest 2 and is making me want to sell my Rift and replace it with an Index. I absolutely do not want to associate my real life persona and Facebook account with my VR device and games. I'm not even doing any weird porn shit, just playing normal games, but I wouldn't want to associate my Steam account in this way, either.

Isn't Facebook actively banning fake accounts these days? I would worry that I would lose my purchases if my fake Facebook account got banned.
Sounds like an american thing, I know people with several dummy FB accounts, and they've been using them for over a decade.
No organisation is even allowed to make a copy of your ID here, it's literally against the law, so there is no way facebook could ask you to take a photo or scan of it.
The only ones that are allowed are things like, a new employer, or if you want to open a bank account or certain government services etc..

Sucks for y'all I guess.
