So how do the companion settings work exactly? I've set all 5 slots, does this mean that it doesn't matter whoever is leading my party? Like does the leader get ignored in favour of the 'favourite' unit?

Also how does it refresh the other tabs? Is it a global thing where the friend has to show up in the main 'favourite' tab before being able to show up in the others? Cause I find it pretty odd that the other tabs are pretty sparsely populated.

Companion Settings are done from the Friends menu. You can set them independently of your own adventuring party. You have to set-up a character for each tab for them to show up there. Your leader/favorite/first slot is the character that shows up when you send out gifts etc and is. Gear works just like normal but it's separate from your own parties elsewhere so you can do unique set-ups without affecting your play.

They're not filling out because folks probably aren't putting units there, lol

Lol the never ending Katy Perry event continues. None of this news really excites me all that much, though GL buffs are always appreciated. I still haven't done more than log in and collect freebies over the past 3 weeks. Yesterday's 5+1 ticket got me a Summer Fina + Lid. It was strange though, it didn't pop up like a "new" pull, with the animation showing the unit, and there was no "new" icon next to her. I checked my inventory afterwards to see if I had accidentally pulled one earlier, but I didn't. Oh well, still pretty happy about that. I really wanted one of Folka/Citra but I can always just UoC one later if I don't quit. Basically the only thing keeping me around right now at all is the upcoming anniversary. It better be damn good.

You're gonna be merging for hours after the anniversary.
Also can someone check and see if all my set units show up? Still think it's weird for the tabs to be so empty for me.
Should be esther, elly, malphasie, kryla, lilith.

So I actually had some free time waiting for SE's conference at E3 last night, and I merged down all of my units. Took me a total of 2.5 hours ; ;

Afterwards, caught up on general housekeeping stuff and did half of the story event. From some collected tickets, I actually got a single copy of Folka/Citra, so that was pretty exciting. Also got my 4th Beryl for his STMR and another CG Fina.

So what's this new companion thing? I haven't really been keeping up on the news.

You can set 5 companions in the friends menu now, each of them go into seperate tab, shouta's post above explains the rest of it.

Oh that's actually pretty cool. I'll have to spend some time customizing that later. I'm going to try to finish the story event and farm some tank crysts, I didn't have enough of the little ones to fully enhance my Merc Ramza. How embarrassing.

I used 20 Select Tickets and picked up Esther. She seems pretty badass and one more badass for my crew won't hurt. Not sure what's up with this Katy Perry stuff, but not sure why they keep giving these units that most people won't even bother using.
Esther and Sylvie are my 2 favorite units that Gumi has ever added to GL. They're both so good, their kits are nearly perfect for their roles, and they make chaining an absolute breeze. I never used macros or third party apps to chain, so it's been soooo fucking nice to be able to grab a friend Esther and pop out an easy 50 elemental chain with her LB. They even make the numbers so visually appealing (they continually stack on top of each other, it looks so damn good). Sylvie lets you bring all sorts of random units and still get a chainer out of them. She's probably the most versatile unit in the whole game and she hasn't left my team since I got her. I wish ever GL exclusive character was as good as these two. Frankly I'm shocked Gumi left them in the UoC pool with how good they are.

I'm so glad I got CG Cecil. He's so good. D=
I'm really glad to hear this. I still don't like Summon Fests on concept, but Cecil and FFIV has always been a personal favorite. I haven't looked up much about him, is he a tank again or some other role?

He's a magic tank with support and debuff skills. He has a Light and Dark mode that he can swap between during battle, each with different skills. Lots of utility and strong damage reduction abilities too.

Lenneth still does the heavy lifting for me, but I figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to get Esther since she seems pretty powerful when I use other people's versions. Now, I just gotta figure out how to add her into my current group. My main issue is that I can't seem to pass the 1700 ATK/MAG cap and I'm not sure how other folks do it. I'd love to hit or get closer to 2k ATK for my Lenneth. Also, deciding which TMRs to get has been something I've been struggling with for the last couple of weeks. I ended up getting lightning sword for Esther, but it ended up not working out as well as I expected it to. Gonna have to mess around with things a bit more to figure out what I can do to improve the guys I have now. I'd like to add Sora and Esther into my main group, but I'm not sure who to give up to get there. Heh, heh.

Standard TDH build for her will get around 2k ATK without any special equipment. So basically Cloud's TMR, 2x Esther TMR (should have been a free TMR if you played a lot during the easter event) or a Marshall Glove thrown in, then just stack equipment in the order of Flat ATK > ATK% > LB Damage once you hit an acceptable ATK number. Use any of the good Large Sword materia if you have it (Proud Fencer, Large Sword Mastery, etc) Also, revolving saw 2h sword (3* TMR) is a great budget weapon for her. She can self-imbue lightning element so you don't need a lightning sword. The extra ATK and weapon variance is worth more. You shouldn't try to build her MAG at all, she's pure physical DPS.

She's definitely better than Lenneth and once you try chaining bolting strike or her LB with a friend Esther, you'll never want to go back to other chaining families. It's just so easy to do.

I'll have to mess with that. I use Lenneth because she can one shot things without needing anyone else. So no need to chain to get the damage out. She can solo the Legendary Mog King missions by herself so she's great for carrying four scrubs to max the bonus...and her damage is quick. Which is another plus when grinding these things out.

I've tried to use other units to replace her, but so far no one can do it. They always fall short in some way. I think it's mainly because Lenneth's 57 MP move (can't remember the name right now) hits so hard and quickly. Either way, I don't see the need in replacing her right now, but for times when I need a crew to do some damage, I want to have a stacked group. Just gotta break the 2k ATK barrier on Lenneth and my other units (A2, Sora, Esther...and Trance Terra).

Esther and zeno do so much more damage than anyone else, they prolly replace an entire team of other damage dealers by themselves. Lenneth and such are def cool units, so I understand you want to keep using her, heck I love using aranea still, but esther and zeno make them kinda irrelevant.
