For the few in here who cares, Fillon just got elected as the right and center's candidate for the French Presidency.

French conservative primaries' candidate Alain Juppe on Sunday conceded defeat in the race to become his camp's candidate in next year's presidential election and said he would support Francois Fillon.

A blowout as of now, the results are still partial but he won with 67,8% and 70,1% of the votes have been counted.

About 4,5 millions have voted in the primary.

As far as worldwide policy goes he wants to restarts talks with Russia and provide help in Syria.

The "Manif' pour tous" a group against same sex mariage and same sex adoption backs him and was the furthest at the right from both finalists.

Edit: Here's the electoral map from Le Monde:

Searched but didn't found anything.

Le Pen confirmed to win. PS supporters are not going to vote for a guy who wants to rollback labor rights, eliminate the safety net, fire all public sector employees, and privatize and deregulate everything.

Man, Fillon or Le Pen? That's like choosing death by burning against death by drowning.

He wants to talk to Russia? That's his platform? Need info, OP.

François Hollande attempted to distance France from Russia (the ships we were selling them but cancelled because of the Crimea's crisis is an exemple).

He thinks that it was a mistake and want to improve France-Russia relation especially regarding Syria.

He is not the furthest right candidate in the next election.

Debatable.

Le Pen is only far-right on immigration and criminal justice. Her economic policy is to the left of most Democrats. She is essentially a racist and nationalist version of Bernie Sanders.

Fillon is pretty much Reagan down to a tee.

The left would even less want Le Pen to be president...
As a matter of fact with such a program it may be harder for Le Pen to reach second round. Fillon will have a strong position, but many right moderate voters wouldn't vote for him on the first round.

Yeah, I'm not voting for that guy, his religious friends, and his Thatcherite plans, even to stave off Le Pen.

(Seeing some of his supporters saying "make France great again" sealed it for me)

And this is what French voters are most concerned about? That's all I was trying to get to for non French GAF. What's this guy selling that voters are buying? In the US this year, voters were not feeling the economic recovery like Wall Street was. Health care being a big voting issue as well.

To American posters, this basically means the french presidential election is going to be Donald Trump vs Ted Cruz, barring some unexpected events.

"Provide help" to Syria? By doing what exactly, assisting in Russian war crimes against civilians?

Fillon... stridently warned against the threat of “Islamic totalitarianism”.[23] He has called for a rapprochement with Russia, under Vladimir Putin (described as a "chum" of his),[24] and Syria, under Bashar al-Assad

Ah I see, so scary Muslims and let's be chums who authoritarian leaders....the Trump worldview. Got it.

From what I gathered from the election topic, it was a race between garbage and shit and garbage won.

Personal opinion but Fillon was way worst.

-Doesn't like the idea of abortion (but he said that he'll never touch those laws and that it was just his personal belief)
-Wants to erase 500K jobs in the public sector
-Wants the people working in the public sector to work 39 hours a week paid 37 saying that 'we all have to make effort for the well being of the country"
-Wants to suppress the fortune tax
-Wants to increase the VAT
-Wants to tighten the scope of our social security to only "grave and long illness/injuries"

And many other things I disagree with.

I just mentioned worldwide policy because that's what USGAF would be more interested in in my opinion but see above for some others policy.

Edit: oh and Putin rallied behind him too.

I'd think that slogan works more for Le Pen, honestly.

I feel like the idea of the EU is breaking down right now. It either needs to be massively reformed or tossed.

Ha, got a flyer for Fillon in the mail, that ended with Make France Great Again" aha

Fillon is Ted Cruz who wants to be Donald Trump.

Ahahaha he realizes he's campaigning in France right, what a year.

Doubt I'll even bother voting for the 2nd round.

Please do.

So the left isn't fielding a candidate? Or the left candidate is just hated for nonsense reasons?

The left candidate will be elected in January IIRC.

The incumbent Socialist president is the most unpopular president in postwar French history and his party is tarred by association. They'll run a candidate, but they almost certainly won't make the second round of the two-round process.

He's a piece of shit but he's a competent politician. He's neither Le Pen nor Trump.
If I have to vote for him in the second round (and that's pretty much a garantee), I will. I'm not happy about it but considering the shitshow that 2016 has been, if we have to endure a 5 year Fillon presidency, that's definitely the lesser evil.

I wonder what will become of the Socialist Party. I used to be a militant / volonteer for them and I never thought they could become this unpopular. I'm not even sure I'll vote for them in the first round.

Hollande needs to fuck off and give way to a formidable Social Party candidate.

Debatable.

Fillon is pretty much Reagan down to a tee.

Well, that's not really shocking: National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP).

Nah those were just the primaries for the right. And most people assume Le Pen will get to second round, so it would be Le Pen Vs Fillon, but nothing is sure actually (as a matter of fact two weeks ago everybody expected either Juppé or Sarkozy to win the primaries, not Fillon).
Also, Fillon has been Prime Minister for 5 years already, and nothing outrageous happened.

So... any chance he wins enough of the right wing vote that Le Pen gets knocked out in the first round?

No. Le Pen draws about as much from the traditional left as she does the right, with strong support in post-industrial working class areas.

Elect the Fillon prat, take to the streets over his so called reforms. Seems to be a better option than Le Pen and the downward spiral of basic human decency.

conservative traditional values slash the state right

That's a surface level analysis. Fillon isn't nearly as crazy as Cruz. Come on now.

I would rather be ran over by a train than ever cast a vote for Fillon or Le Pen. They're both horrid candidates. Don't know anyone in my family who would go out in a Le Pen vs Fillon round either.

Then you won't get to complain when Marine gets elected and we'll know who to blame.

Serious reforms are needed. The older generation and they outnumber younger people across all EU countries, do not have much believe in the EU and some would rather see it burn. They blame Brussels for everything, something local politicians have a huge hand in. The lazy local politicians cannot explain the benefits of the EU, yet will easily point at Brussels when their back is against the wall. uh we cannot do this or that because of Brussels, enters expensive restaurant with the secretary while his wife waits at home. lol

Not gonna happen in my opinion. He will take a fair chunk of the far right but I don't think that the left will have enough to attain the second round.

What are his views on the EU?

Against a Federal UE and wants less power in the European Commission.

Wants a UE military force and to put all UE debts in common.

He also wants more common budgetary, fiscal and social politics across the UE members.

You're wrong, left will largely vote for Fillon if he's against Le Pen in the 2nd round, not even close.
