Yeah, I've been hesitant to start AFFC because of some of the remarks I've read but I'll probably start this week and take it slow and hope the paperback for ADwD is out really soon. Any date on that?

It was already posted on the same page as your post.

ADWD paperback is supposed to release August 28th i think...

On another note, here's a YouTube playlist with the 2nd season's soundtrack (potential spoilers) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkrrId_bKaw&list=PL730C8011FA27D0DE&feature=plpp_play_all I don't know if it's been released or not yet, but it's so much better (I feel) than the first season's soundtrack. Loads more recognisable motifs and pounding drums, the music very much helped make Blackwater what it was. My personal favourite is the gnarly Stannis theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzb8c-fenPA&feature=BFa&list=PL730C8011FA27D0DE.

eh? ASOS
Just sounds like they are going to have that fight of theirs, which was also in the books.

In regards to AFFC & ADWD complaints (no big spoilers for characters or events, but I'll just put this in spoilers if someone doesn't want to anything at all of future books)
I find they are mostly about how neither of them is another ASOS (which would be impossible considering what happens in ASOS), but both are more about the aftermath of ASOS, world-building again (like the beginning of AGOT) & slowly starting to set up the pieces for a grand finale.

I love how you can clearly tell he is just knocking away the prop.

It reminds me of the black knight from The Holy Grail.

Non-book readers should avoid that playlist like the plague, there's a particular spoiler about the next episode in a name of the song.

That would give me 3 months to read AFFC which is a lot. I was a little startled to see that the print was more spaced out than in ASoS (20% less per page) making AFFC much shorter, not to mention the 15% fewer pages. I have a feeling I'll speed through it without meaning to and have to wait for Dance. :(

I know it's already out in the UK, but it's split into two books, which is annoying.

Thoughts on the spoilered section:

That would piss me off too. But you know, I honestly doubt they're even gonna go as far as to cut his hand off completely, after seeing the way they pulled the Tyrion injury. Instead of a permanently fucked up face it just looks like he's gonna have a thin "I'm a badass" scar. Much easier in terms of makeup and effects to do than having a chunk of nose missing they have to make every episode.

I think Jaime's hand will get impaled or something to the point where he'd never be able to use a sword in it (or hold things well in general) again, but the hand itself is still there so they don't have to waste money on making it appear chopped off.

Tyrion hops quite a lot doesn't he? :)

edit: Just wanted to post my favourite GOT S2 soundtrack, [URL="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9Mmd0pddLg&feature=BFa&list=PL730C8011FA27D0DE#start=0:00;end=2:08;autoreplay=true;showoptions=false"What Is Dead May Never Die[/URL].
By far the best my 2nd would be Rains of Castamere

I'm holding out for them to chop off his hand since it's a lot easier to fake that without expensive SFX than trying to fake a missing nose.

Really enjoyed that, it says something that we didn't get any Jon or Dany and it's the best episode of the season, even discounting the action. it's not quite Kingdom of Heaven: DC, but i found it as interesting as Helm's Deep at least.

Very good episode. They didn't get all of it but they made it wonderful still.

Sad to see Davos go so early though. I know he's alive but he didn't do that much. They should've tried to get the chain part too, and the trebuchets with the flying people lol but time and budget restraints I suppose. Also the scene with Tyrion was cool but they really should've taken the nose too; would have made it more of a shocker for the audience since now you pretty much know he survived. :( I guess it would be hard to use make up for every time he's on screen though.

Thronecast is up for those of you in the UK:

- Thronecast Episode 9: The Official Fan Show
Episode 9 of Game of Thrones, "Blackwater," was an absolute jaw-dropper - and Thronecast is going to try to break it down for you like a bunch of soldiers at the Mud Gate. We speak to Kristian Nairn (aka Hodor (Hodor)), a bunch of superfans show off their Game of Thrones tattoos, and Linda & Elio from Westeros.org offer their take on this mindblowing episode.
- Youtube copy for the rest of us

Also, a quick request - could those of you that have read the books please stay out of the other thread. It's getting to the point where a lot of posts are coming from book readers, and it's very difficult to keep your knowledge of future events from coloring your discussion and comments in that thread. I understand the compulsion to live vicariously and take in their experience with the story, but please do so at a distance through observation rather than actively participating in their conversation. If you have any questions, please consult the spoiler rules in the OP of that thread. Thanks for your help.

We'll find out tomorrow.
Iirc, ratings numbers on holiday weekends are usually delayed until Wednesday.
Yeah, it's going to be 64 minutes long. HBO's site is quite accurate with their original programming. I'm sure it's just airing in a 70 minute slot to give them some more time to promo True Blood/The Newsroom. A 65 minute slot would be cutting it too close.
That was my understanding of the situation, as well.

The good thing about next season is (series spoilers)
that it will only cover the first half of A Storm Of Swords where nothing much happens until the very end, in fact I can't really recall any super "high-budget" scenes in that part other than some of Daenarys's bits. This means they can can spend their budget more broadly on building new sets and new characters (especially the Tullys and Riverrun) then in the 4th season spend it all on actual big events like Joffrey's wedding, the battle at the Wall etc. as the sets will be mainly already there.

Came in here and expected a lot of whining. But people actually seemed to be pleased :) me too! Great episode, although it had a few LOL moments. The Rains of Castamere: brilliant!

I didn't want to say it right after watching it, but almost 24 hours later I can safely say this was the best hour of television I've ever watched.

Was an awesome episode.

Minimal changes, glad they preserved Cersei's breakdown.

Loved seeing the hound ripping people apart, and the bronn/sandor man off (was hoping for a quick fight though, going by the books sandor would have won
no bias here
). Looks like they dropped
The hound kiss with sansa, most likely because it would make audiences uncomfortable due to the age gap in casting
.

I lurk that thread and yeah it's kind of getting hand. Book readers really shouldn't be posting in there.

Knowing FFC's reception beforehand, I didn't expect that much from it. But I loved it! [no real FFC spoilers]
It's completely different from SoS, but it still has everything I love the series for, even though a few storylines are disappointing. It's a great book. Reason for the general disappoinment is probably what you mentioned.

I literally couldn't put down ASOS and read it through in 2 weeks or less but it's taken me months to get through AFFC. It doesn't have the same hook but it's still a good read

I'm fairly confident they are going to do a fade away for
The Battle at the Wall. Blackwater was hard enough... that battle is going to require mammoths and giants and fucking shadowcats and, like, a bazillion soldiers or something.

It would be great if this became like Deep Space 9 where each season had one FX crazy "Let's burn money!" episode.

It seems HBO will provide an extra budget if the showrunners can prove that the story requires it... so it's a matter of them convincingly arguing for the events in question.

Eh, I think a
Missing hand, especially when he gets a replacement eventually, isn't anywhere close to being as hard to remove someone's nose convincingly. There's no reason not to cut off his hand, really.

[series spoiler]
Season 4 will have the most insane budget ever. I could easily see it going to 100 million if you consider the fact that Bran has a bunch of scenes requiring CGI and the scenes at the wall will be extremely expensive.

The battle of the wall will have to be different, to be honest the scene in the book doesn't even make any sense with archers shooting at people on a 700 ft tall wall. And what CG would Bran need?

i am pretty sure they're going to find a way around <ASoS>
The Battle at the Wall. There's simply no way they can possibly even come within the ballpark of that battle. So I'm guessing fade to black. Maybe a quick shot of the amassing armies with their mammoths, shadowcats and giants and that's it...

They can just show a smaller battle, have Jon defending the gates or something. The mammoths, Giants, and fighting on top of the Wall will have to go obviously.

I guess I'm the only one that never imagined the battle at the Wall to be all that epic. I do wonder how they're going to handle the wildling army though. I'd love to see a couple giants and mammoths, but I wonder if we will. Shadowcats/etc. can be forgotten.

Spoilers related to quoted spoilers

Honestly the way I imagined it was a few quick cg shots of the massive armies, but majority of scenes are showing the very few men left at the top of the wall, and an almost directly down shot at the wall showing the first line or two of men/giants at the actual gates.

Bran goes to a lake with a tower in the middle. Then he goes to the Nightfort and has to pass through a magical door. Both will need special effects to do it right unless they just decide to skip the tower and have the door be a regular door, lol. There are other instances where special effects will be required outside the wall but I don't want to list too much in spoilers.

Blackwater was Lena Headleys best episode so far, she was the best in the episode actually, even better than Dinklage who was his usual, awesome self! How she can portray such a bitch and still draw sympathy from me is beyond me! She was dark as fuck here...

I don't blame Jaime btw, totally would.. no. Don't care. Would.

The Lake with the Tower is unimportant and not worth spending money on. I don't see how a voice activated door is going to be expensive. Dany and Jon are going to be problematic, but I don't see the problem with Bran's stuff. It's a small group of people traveling through the wilderness, simple stuff.

Yeah if you get rid of the tower it will all be simple, but I don't want to. :( Read the description of the door again. The lips of the door open wider and wider until nothing but a gaping hole remains. It will be lame it is just some guy on the other end talking and the door just opens like a regular door. I think the door also has functioning eyes.

it's the first episode I saw her as Cersei. I really haven't liked her performance up until now, but she plays a plausible embittered wine drinking momma. It's like tailor made for her particular brand of acting. I just don't think Lena can play the conniving, dagger-in-the-back stuff as well.

That's exactly how I read it also.

[ASoS]
The majority of the wildling army staying in the forest in a spread out camp while a small amount of them shoot at the wall or try to get through the gate. The ones in the camp are just chillin' and waiting to relieve the ones attacking when they're tired.

As per Cornballer's wish, I won't post in the other thread at all any more.
