Getting robbed is some shit.

Self made snowboard? Any pictures?

That would seem easy to track down if they attempt to sell it.

That's the design on it, looking for another shot of it.

That sucks man, at least you and your family are OK, hear these horror stories of people confronting burglars.

Yeah it blows. My house was broken into a few years back. They trashed the place looking for stuff. Then the cops came and decided to dust for prints and shit and that just left black shit all over the place I had to clean up. Of course nobody was caught and it just leaves you feeling really violated. Insurance covered everything but it still really fucking blows.

Yup. Years ago I was held up at gunpoint while working at a video store. Three guys. Gun pointed at my head.

The cops just happened to be driving past at the time the three came into the store, saw some shit was gonna go down, and arrested one of them at gunpoint, in the store, in front of me. They had their guns drawn, were screaming at him to FUCKING DROP THE GUN, ON THE GROUND NOW.

Scariest shit I've ever experience in my life.

Im so sorry to hear that. Ive had my first gaming computer and gaming laptop stolen before (Once through car door locks malfunctioning and another when someone force their way into an adjacent apartment unit, scoped me out for a week and I just thought they were bad neighbors who smoked in the hallway and played loud music when they were really observing me and the other person that stayed on my floor and hit us before lunchtime) and its such a terrible feeling. I still never quite have gotten over it. But now I double-check all locks and am very wary of who I work with and my neighbors. I reupped on renters insurance, locks for car and apartment, and security systems just to have some peace of mind. It's become habitual and I even do it for others now. You just never know.

Theres that period after your property has been violated where youre ready to spend thousands on new security measures.
..youre being hasty. The feeling of helplessness will go away after a few days.

Buy a 'This house is protected by something alarm systems' sticker online and put it on your window. Maybe buy an IP camera to put in your living room. No need to do more.

Yeah I'm renting a new place and I feel like I've accumulated enough "nice" stuff that I'd like to get some level of security.

Was thinking of getting four security cameras (one facing the front, one on the patio, one inside facing the front door and one on the inside facing the patio door) and perhaps a motion sensor alarm too (not hooked up to a security system but just one that chimes loudly).

Robbers make some weird decisions on stealing systems . The guy who hit my apartment stole the 360, PS4, the power brick for my Xbox one. He left the Wii U but stole all my Wii U discs (luckily a huge part of my Wii U collection was digital thanks to the deluxe promotion).

Then he sold all my Wii U discs to gamestop and the police found the records of him doing so, executed a search warrant based on that and based on a subpoena for my PS4's serial number, and I at least got my consoles back. Stills sucks though.

When you get that kind of insurance, how do you document all your things? Do you have to have receipts for all of them? I sure as hell dont have receipts for everything in my house. What is to stop someone from documenting all kinds of shit they dont own?

I just dont know how this works but Ive been interested in it.

I keep a document in the cloud on all the serial numbers. Especially on things like firearms. But electronics too.

Damn, sorry to hear, OP. We got burgled last year, and it was the worst. They didn't touch any electronics, but they did take a bunch of valuables. And, as others say, the worst part of it is the paranoia.

Make sure you call your insurance right away. I remember being asked why I didn't call immediately during their investigation.

You're in Seattle aren't you? Mind if I ask what neighborhood? We get prowls and burglaries here in Wallingford and it's a mix of professional burglars and drug addicts from the Mayor's failed experiment.

That's sort of surprising. I've always felt pretty safe when walking around Wallingford. I'm not super familiar with the area though so I'd believe that break-ins happen.

That sucks, no point getting a German shepherd now you aren't likely to get robbed again!

lol @ open neighbourhood comment. Guarded compounds as neighborhoods? That's a bit colonial isn't it? Or the premise of that movie I can't remember by the district 9 guy.

Got a knock on the door one evening and I thought it was my roommate cause he always left his keys. I opened the door and it was two dudes with guns and they charged in and pushed me to the ground. They were yelling about cocaine and they meant to rob someone else in the complex! I was shook and told them don't kill me and take whatever so one guy went upstairs and took my MacBook pro that I was still paying off and had all my college work, my Wii which was new at the time, and my of iPhone!

Sucked man I would stay awake at night thinking about different ways I could've killed them and had to drop a semester if classes and delay my graduation.

sounds like what happened to my friend. He lived in a place that assigned roommates to the same room, and I guess what happened was one night he heard a knock, opened the door two guys came in with guns and robbed him and two of his other roommate. The thing was there was a fourth roommate who's room they never went into, and later out my friend found out the fourth roommate was an ex con and thought the roommate tipped off those other guys to rob them. It also seemed to make sense since when the police asked that roommate why he didnt do anything or see what the commotion was during the robbery, he said he didnt hear anything outside. So yea shit like that is scary

You folk with theft insurance, who did you get it from and how much does it cost you?

If you have auto insurance, you may want to see if your insurance company also offers renter's or homeowner's insurance (whichever applies to you). They can bundle it with your auto-plan for a discounted rate.

I don't know about homeowner's insurance but renter's insurance is pretty affordable and worth it, IMO.

Poster was talking about gated communities, which are pretty common in the US.

Oh and to top it off, the neighbors saw a uhaul in the morning ( the robbers ) and thought nothing of it.
Damn, I hope my neighbours are of the more worried kind if this ever happened to me. Good luck, hope the insurance goes good.

My house was broken into twice when we lived in Kent. I remember writing about how the day I got back from vacation only to find Sonic 3 had been stolen was the worst day of my life for a class paper.

Definitely a similar situation. I think the robbers knew they were in the wrong place as soon as they came in and saw I was some gaming nerd with a Jew fro. My neighbor was always shady to me and told the police he heard a commotion but didn't bother to call the police :/

Yeah I'm sorry, OP. I had my Gameboy Color stolen as a kid (along with the copy of The Mummy that was inside it at the time. It wasn't a great game but still) so I take robbery personally.

Can't believe they left the Wii U though.

OP, check craigslist, etc, everything.

Same shit happened to my neighbors trailer full of tools. He found the dudes selling everything on Craigslist, arranged a meeting(with cops waiting in the wing), and got his shit back and nailed the fuckers.
They had robbed 5 other people in the area.

It's shit.

One of the guys in my CS class got mugged during his pizza delivery job. They hit him with a beer bottle and took his phone and the 20$ they carry on them. Like, wtf?

This is exactly why I'll never live in an open neighborhood. No guard, no thanks. World is too fucked these days.

Wait, what.
People live with a guard in the neighborhood?
I'm not American so I have no idea about this? Do you essentially live in a walled/gated off protected area or something?

That's a burglary. A robbery is in person by force.

They're called "gated communities" and are typically associated with rich people and bullshit homeowner association agreements about how your blinds can't be a certain color, your grass can't be a certain length, what kinds of plants are and aren't allowed in your front yard, etc.

And how everyone's wife needs to be replaced with a robot.

I live in Kent... there's a nice part of Kent?

Jokes aside, that shit sucks. Here stories like this every once in a while. Hope for the best.

I remember our house being robbed when i was younger. It was a hit on me because it was just my room, nothing else in the house was touched.
This guy stole all my CDs, PC games, ripped posters off the wall, left my bean bag in the yard, and even stole my jeans. I can understand CDs and other things, but jeans, come on.

You folk with theft insurance, who did you get it from and how much does it cost you?

I live in a major US city that's relatively expensive and it costs me $200 a year to insure roughly $40,000 on my renter's insurance policy. You can find policies like this through Allstate, AAA, State Farm, etc. For my claim, I didn't need to prove what was stolen. But, my advise is to just walk through your house once every 3-6 months with your phone recording everything, then save that video to a Google Drive or other cloud-based storage. Only takes 60 a seconds to do a walk through and makes it really easy to show at least some proof that you owned an item. Receipts are better, but at least with my insurance, I didn't show them anything as proof and they were fine with my $1,100 claim.

My condolences OP. :( This is the one time of year where the security system is on all the time and the shotgun is loaded. Fuck burglars.

Bwahaha. True true. The hills I live on is mostly old folks walking their dogs. Funny enough my friend who grew up on this hill told me rashes of this happen around these parts every few years. Guess we gotta be like in LA and have the alarm on at all times.

And we're good, we're just happy the dog came back man. That was scary. Our other dog just hid with the cats lmao
