Hiroki Kato (Vanquish/God Hand lead designer, RE:CV director) has become a farmer

Giving back to the world what he took from it. With the hand of God he will vanquish all of the bad shit in farms and return life back to the undead crops at his new residence that happens to be at a farm...that's not evil.

Didn't Capcom just measure demand for a Steam port of God Hand?

Looks like he was checking out the platform and discovered the Farming Simulator games.

I hope he's better at farming than he is at making video games.

The whole interview is pretty cool.

1. Hearing that Tango ran into financial troubles, and that Mikami is grateful for Bethesda buying them.
2. Bethesda's higher-ups did not like it when Mikami said that The Evil Within would be his last game, so he may actually be directing more games.
3. Sega was pushing Mikami very strongly to make a horror game, back when they were with Platinum.
4. Zwei was originally co-op, and involved Vampires and protagonists connected by a chain.

Those points stand out to me, and his overall philosophy of bringing up new directors. And especially how he views Capcom as they got larger. He definitely disapproved of how they operated (can't say I blame him).

That prospective Noah game sounded pretty interesting...

Yeah it did. It's too bad that Bethesda bought them and made him work on yet another survival horror game.

Bethesda Boss: "Okay Yoki Doki, no more of this Noah stuff. You know how long it took Noah to build the Ark? Like a hundred years. Do you have a hundred years left in you, Mikami?"

Mikami: "Probably not, but..."

Bethesda Boss: "But nothing! We're not going to throw away our money on untested ideas. We make games for Americans. Ah-mer-i-cans. You got that? And Americans want dragons and violence...and...look. The reason we snatched you up is Resident Evil. Horror, gore, torture porn. Kids love that stuff. So guess what Mikami, you're going to be making survival horror games. For a very. Long. Time."

Mikami: "[deep sigh]...yes sir"

I highly doubt that's the way it went down.

"So I'm reading Varese's biography right, and there's this passage sticking into a story about the business of music-making from a dollars and cents sort of way 'I would not mind leaving behind composition and grow grapes in Provence much, in fact, I feel I could be just as happy.' It's a good outlook on life, and I appreciate it."

This reminds me. Anybody heard anything about Keita Takahashi lately?

His second child was born just a few days ago. He posts occasional updates through his blog, but they're only sometimes game related. A recent one was a picture of a bus ad for EA jobs, with the comment "No thank you."

Props to him for sticking to what makes him happy instead of staying in the often-crazy industry of games, I wish him the best. I wonder if he's a fan of Harvest Moon?

This feels like the start of an action movie.

Ten years from now, when all that remains are mobile F2P games...
"I gave up that life a long time ago."
"Mr. Kato, gaming needs you.

Then God Hand 2 comes out.

I will be back in five years to shake your hand.

game development, in Japan, would be one of the few jobs that would make farming seem like a less arduous career path.

"Ahh, I only worked 90 hours on the farm this week. This is the life."

Hehe! Actually this is great news. I hope he become successful and relaxes his mind at the same time. The Japanese game's industry is incredibly stressful, so if this is what he really wants then I hope he is truly happy and relieved whilst doing it. Good man.

In a world where game industry was taken over by generic shooters and mobile game ripoff, in a world where heroes and pioneers were lost in the sand of time and changes and bankruptcy and unstainable business models, one man will return to save the industry.

"I gave up that life a long time ago." Kato put down the hoe, swiping down his sweat.
"Mr. Kato, gaming needs you."

*Explosion.*
"Shit, EA just killed another developer."
"What do we do?"
"We make Vanquish 2."
*Fade to Black*

The Developer
A Michael Bay Film
Coming Spring 2016.

I... I think I would watch this movie. I would actually pay good money in the theater for this...

Well... What can I say. I wish him the best of luck and a fulfilling life as a farmer. Boy, did that ever come out of the left corner.

It's not like this choice suddenly devalues the awesome games he made. Wish he could have stayed in the industry, but you gotta do what you gotta do. ;_;7

It's pretty unfair to judge Katoh's skill as a game designer based on CODE:Veronica.

Katoh and Kaori Nishio were the only CAPCOM employees involved in that project (not counting the producers/supervisors who weren't developers). Actual design and development was handled by Nextech and Tose.
