I get it now. I understand why you want Half-Life 3

Doesn't seem OP has seen the actual cliffhanger of Episode 2.

Half Life 2 ends on a similar tone as the first one, had that been the end then the clamoring for Half Life 3 wouldn't be as large.

Obviously there's the issue with what happens to Alyx, but I largely agree. The end of HL2 just feels like Freeman is being put back in his box for when he's needed again.

Real deal . Episode 1 is boring ass fuck and letcoming after Half life 2.
Atleast i felt that way just playing after finishing 2.

Time for some mods and expansions, OP.

Half-Life
Opposing Force
Afraid of Monsters (Director's Cut)
Paranoia

Half-Life 2
Research and Development
Mission Improbable
MINERVA: Metastasis

I have the episodes on Steam but I have not played them yet.

Wait play those first. wtf lol

Half-life 2 did not age well at all. Halo 2 = 2004 goty and greatest fps sequel of all time.

Disagree. I've never been able to force myself through Halo 2's campaign, even at the time. Halo 2's multiplayer was revolutionary for consoles though.

Half-Life 2 has long vehicle sections, that some believes adds to a feeling of "meandering pacing," but that's about the only flaw. Gunplay was insanely good and the level design was very thoughtful.

Congratulations you joined us Half-Life fans in waiting for an unlikely sequel.
Pray to god the wait has a happy ending.
I want say the odds are bad but then I remember my experience I had as a Shenmue fan.

Yes. They are. It's insane to me that some people genuinely don't think they will.

It's 10 years and counting with little or no indication that they are even working on a follow up to Episode 2. I don't think it's insane that people have given up on a sequel.

Considering we've had a few high quality fan mods over the years, I'm surprised no one has made a serious attempt at their own take on episode 3.

Unless they have and Valve put a stop to it?

I played Half-life 1&2 for the first time 2 years ago and still think they are the best shooters i ever played. More compelling story and world then cod and crysis and better gameplay then bioshock.

Revisionist history. Or the history of those born in mid 90s.

You need to play them to truly understand. Episode One does start off a little weak but its solid overall, Episode Two is a big improvement in my opinion.

Maybe take a small break between playing 2 and heading into Episode One however.

I doubt Valve would care provided the project is named something other than Episode Three/Half-Life 3. The only issue Valve took with Black Mesa was the original name Black Mesa: Source as it didn't want people mistaking the mod as an official product that sits alongside Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source and Half-Life: Source, plus more recently a fan released a pay-to-play sequel to Opposing Force on Steam with the name Prospekt. I'd say the roadblock is the matter of quality: crafting even just a ~six-hour SP campaign is no small task and you simply couldn't continue the story without certain characters returning, who would need to be either recast or mute puppets that spew out text.

It is for his reason I will never finish Half Life 2.

Also, the game straight up aged terribly- I feel like I played it too late too appreciate the physics/graphics/production quality as all of Half Life 2's novelties have become ordinary. I'm surprised that you OP managed to finish it.

I always felt Portal 2 should have been a lead-in to a new game set after a long time-jump in the Half-Life universe, with a fresh theme and set of ideas. Tie in disparate threads like whatever happened to Freeman, Aperture Science's role in things, etc.

This is one of the reasons why I don't think I will ever play the series. I don't expect HL3 to ever come out. Its better that I stay away from it as long as I know they aren't going to give it a proper conclusion.

BTW people are not starving for Half-Life 3 but the Half-Life 2 Episode Three.

But Gabel made so much money with Steam that forgot about gaming development.

Cut me some slack, I thought they were mods. Until this thread, I didn't know they continued where 2 left off.

It keeps getting worse!
More seriously, there's some really good mods for HL2, definitely worth playing after you've played the episodes.

I think you meant "world".
Or "dimension".

I didn't want to go too far but I've seen that others dared to say that :p

Don't do that to yourself and play those fantastic games.
Every game basically ends on a cliffhanger. That's part of the charm.

Half-Life 2 episode 2's ending?
Yep, welcome to the club.

Obviously doesn't need a sequel just because of the story, but also because it's a fantastic FPS that changed the industry several times.

Was going to post the same thing. Such a well known and loved franchise back in the day, especially on PC.
Still my favourite games ever. They were so revolutionary with the storytelling and overall gameplay.

The games still standalone fine. Half-Life was a classic before there was even going to be a Half-Life 2, and Half-Life 2 was a classic before there were even going to be Episodes. It's not like the entire quality of the series hinges on its story and characters...

Yeah, you have to play the episodes to fully understand the craving for closure. The end to Episode 2 is still the most cruel thing a gaming developer has ever done.

The ending of Episode 2 is indeed the main reason why I want a sequel to to come out sooner or later. Cliffhangers are pure evil. That said, given that it has been years since I last played the games I'm losing much of the passion I had for the games which is a good thing in my book since Valve will probably not release a sequel anytime soon if ever.

I know some people will laugh at this, but it's one of the rare video game moments that made me cry a bit.

It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

What a fail of a thread.

Also this is bananas. I still enjoy playing HL2 periodically; I played Halo 2 for the first time in the MCC a month and a half ago and was baffled by how bad its campaign is.

Yeah, HL2 and the rest of the source stuff has aged really well. I loved Halo 2 and that love is solely for its MP, the campaign sucks.

Then you DONT UNDERSTAND

The truth.

I thought OP just finished Episode 2 and came to post, but he's still way back at HL2. Get back to us when you're done, OP.

What a fail of a thread.

I like to downscale from 4k and play at a locked 120fps with ULMB turned on. It's fantastic. Near-perfect IQ and motion clarity is a beautiful thing.

True despair is waiting..
Upupupu... (Danganronpa reference, sorry :).)

Yeah, it's insane that back when Portal 2 was announced I remember being mad that we were still waiting for HL3/Ep3, but that was in 2011! I feel like i figured they'd get around to it in the same timeframe that it took for Portal 2 to come after Ep2/Portal 1 but no, it's been much worse.

I'm still sure that eventually the culture within Valve will change enough that young blood will lead a new effort to bring HL back, but I'm also guessing it will be a reboot or something. I now there's the weird open world zip-line nonsense mentioned in some Source 2 files or something, but I think they haven't started on the version that will actually get released, and it'll be something like DOOM 2016, semi-acknowledging previous games but mostly standalone, with a few twists on the classic gameplay style but nothing that's a huge departure. They'll also probably play a bit more with the absurdity of Gordon being mute like DOOM did with Doom Guy.

In the mean time, we've got Black Mesa Xen to look forward to someone this year so that's great! Even though they've said they're planning for Summer I'm expecting delays, but I'm excited to see what they pull off. Even though Black Mesa is lacking in some ways compared to the original or 2, if anyone besides Valve is fit to do Half Life 3, it's the Crowbar Collective.
