Attendance was over 66k in 2019. That was 3k less than the 69k in 2018 but still higher than the 50k in 2016 when Sony had reportedly one of its best E3 shows ever.

It was 68k in 2017 so it’s up and down from what I see.

Where’s the evidence of this massive downward trend again? #GAF-Facts??

You’d think these numbers would be in the OP but oh yes I remember...that’s not how propaganda works...
Didn't they open up the exhibition to the general public last year? That could account for the somewhat steady attendance numbers but it doesn't necessarily indicate that the show's impact isn't diminishing. I don't have a horse in this race, the show can keep on going, I don't mind.

There has been a concerted effort over the past 12 months, by a certain type of game journalist (read: the REEing, clickbait, virtue-signalling type) to bury E3 and expediate it’s demise. This is because they have inexplicably declared the ESA a gaming public enemy.

Not sure what started it, but it’s been clear to see.

They don’t want to have to bother with it. It’s beneath them.

The public got full access to the show starting in 2017 if I remember correctly, so while public attendees obivouisly increase starting then, the journalist, etc. started decreasing at the same time...I feel like E3 has kind of jumped the shark at this point, there is really no need for it and obviously Sony doesn't need it for hype, just look at the two Wired articles that happened last year and look how much hype those along created! I think the official announcement is coming at the Playstation Experience 2020 (since all the Playstation key figures are showing up in town) but I don't expect them to release everything including price right now.

It started with the whole defensive gamergate BS. The war on gamers and video games ensued.

Sure it outsold it. Years after 360 stopped production. PS3 was a disaster, but they kept it going.
wtf, dude.

the ps3 ended up selling more consoles than the xbox 360, this is a fact. Yes, the xbox 360 sold way more consoles for the first what, 4 years of that console cycle? eventually ps3 ended selling more.

it doesnt matter if one stopped production, more ps3 sold is a fact.

They could still do a direct style presentation surely? Either way Sony are loving this mysterious approach it's got everyone talking when they release a logo for Christs sake.

If they're not going it's gonna be announced much later I think. They're gonna want Microsoft to announce everything and then go for the kill themselves.

Exactly! But given all the obstacles of both platforms, Microsoft with the whole RROD and Sony with their pricing snafu I think both did a great job recovering that gen! If Microsoft hadn't put their focus this gen on TV when designing the XB1 and made a stronger console I feel like it would have been closer race, but Sony obviously dominated pretty hard this gen.

It's a very smart move for Sony. It would not just only destroy E3 but all efforts from MS since the star of the show will be in an other place.

Sony is ready to win next gen no matter what.

Meh. The writing was on the wall for E3 years ago.
I think the major gaming companies/publishers/devs should come up with their own major show
in place of E3 but that's a pipe dream.
I think we'll have to be content with Nintendo Directs along with the Sony and MS "experiences" shows.

Explains the attendance shortage. ;)
Sony showing them who really runs shit. Funny all that doom gloom bcus Sony didnt show up and arm chair analysts as well as certified ones saying it was going to affect Sony negatively. Guess what? It didn't and it has affected E3 negatively.

Xbox 360 had a lifespan from 2005-2016
Playstation 3 had a lifespan from 2006-2017

Both had an eleven year run...not sure which alternate dimension you are pulling your info from...
Well the last units sold numbers wikipedia has is from 2014 (84m) and PS3 is from 2017 (87m). PS3 was considered a failure throughout the whole run, could barely run multiplatform, was a laughing stock. Then Sony announced they've outsold 360 and now the new narrative is that PS3 was a success. I see it everywhere.

Agreed. MS wants Sony to be there so every conversation about PS5 winds up being a dick measuring contest with XSX, which lets them appear to be on the level with Sony.

Some might call it arrogance, but hey 🤷

I don't think it's about money.

It's a good thing for them, hopefully more developers/console manufacturers will do the same.
It's all a big circle jerk for so called gaming journalists.
You can have your own online event and choose the time when it suits you. Unlike E3, where there is fixed time and you have to compete with other console makers/developers for attention and news.
People think E3 is a big event but in reality it's really not. Sure people stream but hardcore people and people like gaffers. Regular Joe gamer doesn't give a shit and just reads the headlines. And guess what, regular Joe gamer is in the majority, hardcore people are in the minority.
Just my 2 cents.
I don't think that was a serious post.

I hope it's not true. E3 was here since I've been gaming since the 90's and I still remember the awesome gaming magazine articles with lots of pics. It was so magical before the internet was available to ordinary people. Then there were CDs and DVDs packaged to these magazines so readers got tons of pics both about the event and the games, videos too... it's so nostalgic, I would be really sad and miss it if it went away.

I don't care at all about E3. I'm glad it's dying and I hope it's death is a loud ridiculous shameshow. I care about videogames, not some capitalist driven circus that's needlessly expensive.

It's out of date. It's not needed. The internet is a thing.
Having a central event like a con is still fun. I love online conferences but there's an energy in E3 weekend that gives us stuff like the 2013 conference where you get those thunderous cheers plus it's like Superbowl weekend where the world takes notice of gaming for one weekend

Wow, so Sony can skip E3, even perhaps contribute to its demise and they're geniuses for doing it. But MS' reasons for wanting to attend E3 is only to corner Sony on power and try to be on the same level with them.

who gives a shit about sony? lol i think sony is in trouble since they cant afford going to E3
E3 is not a select country club, companies who are there do it for visibility... visibility has a cost per "view", if your presence at an event also gives visibility to your competitors.... well dropping it could be beneficial on two levels: 1 - equivalent visibility will cost less 2 - you won't give free attention to the competition, since "your" audience will not be paying attention to everything under the E3 umbrella while they are there.

And there it is, Sony as of now is to big for E3. Sony doesnt need E3, E3 needs sony. As long as sony has their own event near E3 to compete we are all good here. You now have the stage sony, dont disappoint

The good old days was when Nvidia and.. ATI were going head to head in the video card space.. man, they put their booths next to each other and were always trying to outdo each other. SO MUCH FREE SHIT!

Man, I miss those days.

From what I am seeing, Xbox 360 had lifetime sales of 86 million as of 8/23/16 and Playstation 3 had lifetime sales of >87.4 million as of 3/31/17. PS3 was far from an overall failure...did it come in last place for sales out of all of the Playstation consoles, yes, most definitely, but a failure, not at all...if you don't believe me on the sales figures you can check out the links below.

I don't like it. Sony should still go imho; why turn down an additional venue and opportunity to generate hype for your new console? Yeah social media and online streaming have made it easier than ever for people to get their stuff out there and picked up/reported on, but E3 has always been the hub gluing the gaming industry as a whole together IMHO.

It's been a great way of getting everyone together and outside of their own respective bubbles, and when the spectacle is there, it makes for a genuinely fun experience. It's been a way of bringing the developer side of the gaming community together and to network for potential opportunities in the industry, which is never a bad thing.

Just feels like Sony is cutting off a relatively healthy limb; I enjoy the PS Experience stuff too, but I don't want to have to sacrifice one thing for the other. And despite its impact isn't as big as its heyday, E3's still easily the most well-known gaming convention among the mainstream, I don't see that changing for several years.

Bring back the booth babes

PS3 made a strong turnaround in public perception but it also wiped out ALL the profits Sony made from both PS1 and PS2, so in the end Sony didn't make a lot of money off the platform once you factor the losses with whatever financial gains were made. I think that's the main reason a lot of people consider it a failure relative to the other PS sytems: it lost them more money than they made back.

Can't a joke be just a damned joke?

When there is an adequate OP with the necessary factual content maybe?

Because I thought GAF wanted numbers. Or is it just some numbers??

Let me know when y’all get ya stories straight. Lol.

Sony will take massive damage by skipping E3 twice in a row. With Microsoft, Nintendo, and Google at E3 taking all the highlights it will be very hard for Sony to market their new console. Sony cannot produce the same coverage as E3 with their own events.

Their loss.

So you're saying the PS3 outsold the 360 with old data for the 360?
