LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

Do what Valve did when they got hacked.

Offer the guys a job and once they show up at your office have the Feds waiting.

Didn't know this happened. Brilliant!

Gabe caught the Half Life 2 leaker by doing that.

Located him, ID'd him, offered him a job and then when he showed up, the FBI took care of him.

Not completely true. They were planning to, but when the FBI informed Germany what they planned to do, German police quickly arrested him instead.

Source.

Kind of confusing now that Norse site if attacks are still going on yet what was the whole deal with the MEGA payoff and them saying they were done? These all just copycats now following the footsteps?

Today I learned that a thread about a series of attacks on multiple networks can turn into a graveyard, instead of engendering feelings of unity. Pull yourself together, GAF.
Oh, and HOLY shit, Washington just got hit hard!

Played a few matches of Sunset and downloaded the Telltale bundle. Now that's going extremely slow and I got the Borderlands season pass bug as well, :/

I just turned on my PS4 for the first time in a couple of days, logged in and downloaded the FC4 update with no issues. I'm now hooking up my brand new Xbone (seriously, I have the best friends in the world) and we'll see what happens. Whatever my experience is, will be the de facto standard for the rest of the thread. Ha!
But did you get Sunset Overdrive?

DDoS is a daily event around the world. What you're seeing isn't likely to be attacks on PSN or Live. Sites get hammered and taken down all the time.

The worst part of this is their bullshit Twitter feed. Can't be enough for them to do this, they have to turn around and condescend that this is somehow for our own good, or that it's all about being against corporations.

From what I've read in this thread, it seems the attackers host the botnets in China because of the lack of regulations there.

It's not that attackers host the botnets anywhere, it's that China has so *many* computers with poor security, a lot can easily get infected with the malware that turns a PC into an unknowing zombie in the botnet.

Just starting an online session in FH2

Which to be honest was a bit shit.
7 races and there was only ever about 3 or 4 of us.(usually between 8 and 12)

For whatever reason I can get online but it seems to be fucked for most people.
Dude I could hear speaking was American so it's not just a region thing.

Miktar and others have explained this before, but it's buried pages back. It basically becomes an arms race of Corporations spending more and more money to be able to handle the load of a DDoS attack while attackers get larger and larger Botnets to overload the Corporations servers. Botnets being much more inexpensive to generate than defenses are.. eventually Corporations end up pissing away money for security that they don't even need.

I got that part. I was just curious if there was any more to it.

Like is there some kind of standard amount of investment (like a minimum for a safety net) in defense that perhaps Sony and MS are not bothering with to save money when they should be?

Did this group (or members of it) notice that Sony and MS, despite making so much money, weren't bothering to protect their customers to a satisfactory standard?

For example, if we simplified it a lot and said Lizard Squad needed 101 attack to break Sony's 100 defense, was Sony doing enough by having 100 defense and is this simply a case of if LS decide to, they can just do this any time?

Would Sony upping their defense to 200 make it too hard for LS to bother with on a whim like this, would 200 defense mean LS might think twice because of the extra effort therefore reducing the risk for customers significantly, or would it be easy for them no matter what Sony do making investment in anything over 100 defense utterly pointless?

I understand that but I was going off the magnitude of the attacks still happening and wondering if those were normal.

What people claim to be doing on twitter might not match up to the reality. Either way, while the large-scale attack we saw yesterday stopped, there is still a lot of DDoSing still going on. I don't know if it is higher than normal for the season, or if people are just taking advantage of the current chaos to get their own shots in - we're talking about the motivations of strangers, there is no way of knowing.

Just a bunch of loser who get the kicks out of disrupting other people lives - people who are so sad that they have nothing better to do on a holiday than make other people's lives worse.

Congrats

I think the Mega thing is relatable to The Interview. Accepting the demands of terrorists. Now there is no stopping future attacks and everyone can demand Mega lifetime accounts and other requests.

I still think its funny that the one time Nintendo was DDOS'd was by their own customers accidentally.

Not sure what can really be done about this stuff. Its like someone standing in the street and not letting anyone but past, but you can't move them so the only option is to move the street, but everyone is connected to the street! The 'internet drama' is just bonkers though; I still think half the people involved on twitter are fake or pretending to be against each other whilst working together. Its fucking ridiculous. Even their own twitter is denying stuff now.

Horrible timing but it is what it is (but does suggest major flaws in digital provision going forward). I think there'd be less of a reaction if not for Sony's continued issues in terms of their online infrastructure.

I think all games companies need to have a discussion about ways of recovering/preventing (clearly MS has a better operation) as it does endanger the industry (lets say this continued for weeks).

I kinda feel a bit bad for Kim Dotcom who gave away 3000 vouchers, and the attack is still going on. Did anyone tweet him about that jordie guy's twitter? I really hope that Kim Dotcom cancels thet vouchers.

So are people still in the boys will be boys club of punishment or has that progressed? Honestly this group needs to be punished and to the fullest extent. Not just because of gaming, now they are taking on Tor AND have expressed terrorist leanings. Whatever they get its deserved, unless its juvenile detention then it's to lenient.

Sony did invest in more than the mimunum - they partnered with Prolexic, a not insignificant DDoS mitigation third-party specialist. And it wasn't enough. The *scale* of the attack yesterday still hasn't quite hit home yet.

MS clearly has their own mitigation, I posted about it earlier in the thread already, and they are in the business of offering enterprise-level hosting, so they *have* to have good DDoS mitigation. They handled the storm slightly better.

Yes, Sony and MS could spend more on mitigation, but eventually it's a loss - spending millions to prevent an attack that might never happen?

It is very, very unlikely that the actual instigators of the attack will ever be caught.

The Norse site is honeypots owned by Norse. They have no connections at Microsoft or Sony. They also do not profile DDoS attacks. In other words, the Norse site has no data whatsoever to do with Xbox Live or Playstation Network.

It's not still going on. The attack is over apparently.

Now we're just waiting for the companies themselves to do what they need to do to get the services restored.
