Looking for Anime to watch, but...

Not open for further replies.
Anime anthologies :Robot Carnival, Genius Party[Studio 4oC](These are pretty much the short anime anthologies you are looking for), Memories (longer set of three short-ish films, first one written by Satoshi Kon), Bobby's in Deep

Movies : Mind Game

Short TV Shows (13 episodes or less) :Kaiba, Kemonozoume, Requiem from the Darkness, Mononoke

TV Shows : I guess X'amd is super pretty, and you mainly care about visuals so...

Those are the obvious answers to your specific query, most of which have already been covered by above posters.

And just to cover any other kind of query ever :

Baccano!
Last Exile
Seirei no Moribito
Vision of Escaflowne
Mononoke
Samurai Champloo

Nice visuals, music, story, & characters. They all have about 26 episodes or less.

I loved both Kemonozume and Mind Game but found Kaiba really disapointing. The visuals are amazing but the actual show is a confusing mess. It's been two years since I watched it and I honestly don't think I could give you a coherent summary of what its even about. I'm sure people will say I'm a moron for not getting it.. but I can't be the only one.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days
Voices of a Distant Star
5cm per Second

All by the same director and all visually stunning.

I'm not really sure I'd consider Voices of a Distant Star to be a visually stunning series (though a very impressive one when you consider what tools he used to create it), but the other two definitely are. 5 Centimeters Per Second is probably still the most beautiful anime I've ever seen, and I love the story as well (though I'm a sap... :D )

As for other recommendations... Kara no Kyoukai is definitely tops. The animation and music are fantastic, and the story is definitely intriguing. If you find you enjoy that, Fate/stay night is also worth watching (it's also by Type-Moon), even if it's nowhere near as good as the VN it's based upon. Tsukihime is definitely a play-the-VN-and-don't-watch-the-anime series though.

I really think Kemonzoume is the weakest of the three. Not that they aren't all good.

Bokurano is a delightfully tragic mecha-series. Great OP too.

Everyone dies!

Then there's Now and Then, Here and There, for something completely different.

Other than those, everything I can recommend has been recommended already. Bonus points to everyone who recommended Yoshitoshi Abe.

I really really really like Satoshi Kon and everything he's done (Paprika, Paranoia Agent, etc) and I'm looking for similiar shows/movies

Ive seen and really liked:
Everything Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon
Gurren Lagaan
Death Note
Tekkonkinkreet
Steamboy
Akira
Animatrix

Im looking for a short series or films that are kind of like these, visually interesting or unique, great animation, and a semi interesting story (I like anime more for the visuals than anything else)

For the first bold part, I'd like to recommend you watch "Code Geass." If you liked Death Note, you'll probably like this show as they share a lot of similarities that may not be immediately visible at first glance. Code Geass is more mech oriented, but I still enjoyed it a lot. (I fucking hate mech normally)

For the next point, I'd recommend "Noein" and "Kemonozume." Noein is easily the better of the two based on storyline alone, while Kemonozume is just insane. Both share a very intriguing hand drawn art style alongside cel animation that gives the shows a very different feel from any other anime out there. Imagine reading a manga and it suddenly came to life. The shows look something like that.

If you're interested in a interesting series about the social divides and class struggles in rural Japan then I recommend Girls Bravo. Basically it stars a sickly abandoned teenager living on his own who has to suffer at the hand of the richest guy in town. I don't want to spoil to much, but I did find it deeply moving.

Nice. What about off site lists?

Well there are a number off site ratings, various anime review websites, ANN rankings, myanimelist etc but I don't find the majority of them to be that reliable, as they essentially boil down to "I'm a dude with a blog/website, and no accountability and no editor".

GAF seems to give pretty good advice for the most part.

Just finished watch this for the first time right now and I think you should give it a shot OP:

The Wings of Honneamise, it's got wonderful animation and the story is pretty interesting. (At least I think so.)

Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories; 3 short animated feature featuring Satoshi Kon's first work as a screenwriter & an Otomo (Akira & Steamboy) animated short.
Own it already, but yeah I do like it a lot (except the last short, it has every thing I like, but I dunno....maybe the way it just ends)

at the Genius Party suggestions, Ive been trying to get my hands on a legit copy for a while on DVD was it ever released state side?

also I am really Really REALLY digging Mononke

EDIT: Might as well ask any place to get anime on the cheap?

Can someone recommend me some non-Miyazaki anime movies? If you know of Summer Wars or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, I'm looking for stuff similar to that. Preferably not too weird.

I think the prognosis for that is doubtful.

You should totally get Robot Carnival, except that it's pretty expensive I imagine. So maybe not, if you're on a budget.

no loli shit or comedies (I dont "get" anime humor), nothing that is hundreds of episodes long, I dont really like mecha or anything DBZish

btw I really like short film collections so if anyone know of any good ones please post

You have not seen Sword of the Stranger?

Sword of the Stranger is one of the best films, I have EVER seen. In my opinion, it's right up there with Princess Mononoke!

Also, series -

Berserk
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo

It'sa clichee to post them, but they ARE amazing!

Pretty sure Genius Party was only released in Australia and potentially the UK.

I'd second the motion for Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales if you're digging Monoke. Geneon released the entire series before going caput long ago.

I'd also recommend you check out Hosoda's work (although you're aware of him already), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Released here by Bandai Entertainment), Digimon: Our War Game (released in that Saban/ Fox compilation Digimon movie here), Summer Wars (license reportedly to be announced soon), etc.

Right Stuf is your best bet if you want non-bootleg releases for good prices.

The only non-Ghibli film I've seen to give me the same excitement I get from watching a Ghibli film!

You just perfectly described Noein. There IS fighting that is on par with (early) DB-fighting, but it really never devolves into childish battles, only serves the unique, awesome plot.

Highfive matey! That film is so tight. It's an epic, but it's duration of a normal film. It's so incredible compact, and lean. It only shows what is needed. Every character, no matter how small is great.
The story, is so nicely told. Notice how it does not run on auto-pilot bulls*it voice overs and flashbacks, that lesser films sometimes use to tell a story quicker.

Sword of the Stranger IS a masterpiece. I'll tear out my eyes if it never gets the recognition it deserves!
