Could somebody explain why the psp sold so much better than last week? Increase of ~9000 units without any major game release? Was there a price drop or something? Seems like I am totally missing something...
It's because Nintendo shipped less DS lites and consumer spending has to go somewhere.

All systems sold more last week than 2 weeks ago due to Father's Day

so now fathers in Japan can watch porno UMD on their PSP's... :D

Huh?PS3&Xbox360 had an increase due to "big" games and the other were only slightly better than the week before. I guess wii&ds were sold out so they had no bump but the psp had one because of father's day?

Hm...

(MC vs Famitsu)
GW combined (4/23-5/6) - 69.032 vs 69,113
5/7-5/13 - 34,433 vs 33,438
5/14-5/20 - 27,505 vs 26,044
5/21-5/27 - 26,097 vs 26,446
5/28-6/3 - 26,358 vs 26,348
6/4-6/10 - 24,711 vs 28,974
LTD as of 6/10 - 5,510,628 vs 5,483,341

I really don't know...6/4 to 6/10 MC was 4k lower, maybe they say, oh PSP did 28k and now this week too, so to correct the error we put 4k more to PSP (~32k). But the LTD has MC approx one week ahead so I don't know.

Just read in sinobi's blog (went to check if there were any zelda numbers but nope) that Namco Bandai expects to sell 100k of ToF Vol2, pretty unusual and moderate prediction!

It could actually reach it, Vol1 sold 51k first week and went to sell near 90k LTD. As you can see, its going to be extremely front loaded but this time there are 2 versions so I guess its possible.

I miss so much Namco's PR about sales expectations of their titles...

Once upon a time they was a japanese website with tons of sales data for japan ? does it still exist ?
Shrine of Data used to be quite popular, but it exists only in the archives now.

Just to throw them out, here are a few others I've got bookmarked, though English readers like myself will probably need to use Babelfish to do more than basic navigation.

powerless or are they? o_O
Why are sales numbers for Box Office tickets and music CD sales so easy to come by, while videogame sales are kept secret and are sold at a high premium?

Always wondered that myself.

Because Videogames like the internet are "Serious Business". :lol

Probably has something to do with the fact that newspapers and magazines cover sales returns and entertainment companies advertise good results in those same publications, all which contributes to big hits staying big.

When was the last time anyone bought a game because it placed high in the NPDs?

Edit: Bragging rights probably play a part as well.

Only two different cover arts afaik, which was the case with ToF Vol.1 as well.

Damn, I didn't know there were two versions (covers I mean) for the first one.

Cless and Mint versions!

Plus I'm stupid and didn't notice that Vol2 versions are Tear and Luke, which I took as Tia and Rook and was wondering myself what the hell they meant :lol

Could it be that no one updates their sites with pics and sales data on weekends?

If I remember correctly, its very early in the morning right now in japan, doesn't it?

How can japanese make lineups for a hideous pink ds lite and not for a silver metallic model with Zelda? Intriguing, to say the least.

I bet some people would if a magazine included sales. People are willing to pay $7 an issue for Billboard Magazine. I bet some people would buy a magazine filled with tons of video game sales (imagine a magazine with hundreds/thousands of game sales numbers every month). NPD could make some good money if they made a Billboard-type magazine every month.

I think NPD should be like Enterbrain and cooperate with a specific magazine (a good equivalent seems to be EGM). People like to say Famitsu publishes numbers, but they're only the magazine that Enterbrain reports through.

"Vinnk's Village" Anecdotal Report

Sorry it is so extremely late this week guys. I haven’t been feeling well the last few days. To tell the truth I am still not 100% but I want to get this report up before these numbers become to obsolete to be interesting.

This week I was asked to look for: Wii, DS lite, RE4, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Trusty Bell, Harvest Moon, Observation Training, Ouendan 2, and DragonBall Z PSP. I went Thursday June 21st, 2007:

TOTALS:
Wii: 3 (+1 used)
DS lite: 43
Observation Training: 7
Ninja Gaiden: 28
Trusty Bell: 9 (all bundles sold out)
DBZ PSP: 21+

NOTES:

1. Wii is still very supply constrained. Any store that does have them doesn’t have them for long. I think I can copy and paste this statement until after Christmas.

2. Yet again the DS lite is readily available. All stores have them. This is the fifth week that I have seen the system readily available. However, according to Hiro, some people are waiting until they can get their color of their choice. White is not supply constrained :)Next weeks numbers will be far more telling.

3. Ouendan 2 was available at all the stores that had previously been carrying it. Now that used copies are starting to be available, I do not think there will be any supply constraints in the future.

4. Harvest moon is more or less the same as lat week. It is not supply constrained nor was it over-produced. The amount on shelves seems to suggest that the supply met the expected demand.

5. Biohazard 4 is once again available everywhere (except Famicon Dojo). It seems everyone who wanted it has it now. And it seems few people wanted it outside of specialty stores (where hardcore gamers shop).

6. There are far fewer used Xbox 360s in my town this week. Last week you could walk into almost any store and take home a used Blue Dragon bundle. This week, all store have new 360’s but a few are sold out of the used ones. The fact that these systems are being played is good news for the gamers but fairly bad news for Microsoft who aren't benefiting from sales of the used units. Of course if these new players keep the 360 after finishing the 2 RPGs there could be some increased software sales for other games, but I have a sneaking suspicion that these are going to be sold back pretty soon. You cannot (legally) rent games or system in Japan. If you could, I predict that 360 sales would be much lower.

7. The used scene for PS3 is fairly similar. There are used PS3 units at every gamestore that carries used hardware. These go for (on average) 39,800 yen ( $321 US) for the 20 gig and 46,800 ($378 US) for the 60 gig.

8. In the time I have been doing Vinnk’s Village I have seen maybe 3 or 4 used Wii systems. These sell for about 1000 yen ($8 US) less than the price of a new one. Just like the gamers who buy the 360 for Blue Dragon and Trusty Bell, some people buy the Wii for Zelda and Fire Emblem, and then sell it back. But it seems to be far more rare for the Wii.

9. Ninja Gaiden is not and will not be supply constrained. Already I have seen used copies of it. Which is a bit surprising. I was positive I would see used copies of Trusty Bell before NG:S.

10. Observation training very popular and is selling out at department stores. I imagine it is selling well at gaming stores as well, but you can usually still find a copy if you need to.

11. Wanpaku is getting rid of most of its retro game selection to make room for a bigger DS/Wii section. Interestingly enough they also scaled down the PS3 section to just one display unit (with 5 shelves). The Wii section is now 4 display units. This is interesting since during launch the PS3 was given 3 display units (2 for games 1 for Blu-ray) and the Wii was only given 1. Wanpaku doesn't carry Blu-ray anymore.

Fantastic report as usual. Hope you feel better soon!

Very interesting that DS sales are slowing down this much. Are people aware of the new colors coming up soon, like is it advertised in stores and whatnot? If so, maybe they're holding out for those...?

Err, well, speaking in the past-tense...I guess they're out now. :p

That probably means that new + used 360s sold last week were > new + used PS3s sold last week. Interesting, but bad news for Microsoft, like you said. Just imagine what the used PS3 numbers will be like the week after FFXIII's release. :lol

Vinnk, it might be way too early to ask you this, but are you aware of any hype for DQ:Swords? I'm very curious as to how big this will be.

There are posters up at all stores and pre-order display boxes. Nothing super big yet, but I know for a fact that Wanpaku is planning to have a big display for it coming up soon. I would say the hype and level or advertising will be less than DQIX (obviously) and more than DQM:J. It will be interesting to see how this translates to actual sales.

Thanks Vinnk. Great stuff as always. It's very interesting to see that that DS Lites are very available. It will be even more interesting to see in contrast to the numbers next week. I might not be right about this, but it seems like the closer the DS gets to the PS2, the closer it will be to hitting the saturation point for Japan. How far it goes beyond the PS2 in the next three years will really show if Nintendo attempt to breach new markets was really successful, or if they were just expanding the already existing casual market by addressing their needs as consumers.

There are of course a couple of caveats to this. The existence of two models of DS is one of them. I'm sure that there is a pretty high percentage (20% maybe) of DS owners that held onto their DS when they upgraded to Lite. There is also the play model where a handheld is a more personal item, while a home console might be enjoyed by the entire household. I think both of these are very hard to adjust for.

Thanks- exactly what I wanted to know. If you don't mind, when it gets closer to release, any further little tidbits would be greatly appreciated.
