Worst publisher of the decade goes to...

GameRepublic, run from these smucks. You guys actually have talent, pull a Brownie-Brown (who doesn't appear to have talent), partner with Level-5. Make a Genji PSP2 game or something, just stay away from Scamco, they are trying to kill you.

02. / 02. [WII] Donkey Kong Country Returns (Nintendo) {2010.12.09} - 66.551 / 704.856 (-38%)

We need a fleshlight .gif of some sort to celebrate that.

10. / 14. [WII] New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo) {2009.12.03} - 24.888 / 4.202.472 (-5%)
12. / 15. [WII] Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo) {2008.04.10} - 21.230 / 3.130.795 (-16%)
20. / 19. [WII] Taiko Drum Master Wii 3 (Bandai Namco) {2010.12.02} - 15.381 / 155.670 (-15%)

What ? These drops are really low.

MHP3 failed to cross 4 million this week. Too bad. It'll take a few more weeks for it to beat DQIX and MHP2G's records.

DKCR > 700k. Simply amazing performance. Very impressive.

Ni no Kuni > 400k. Not bad for bomba price driven sales. It'll be interesting to see how far it can go before slowing to a halt. Probably around 500k. It'll be totally dead by the time the 600k shipment sells out, if it ever does.

Gundam Musou 3 > 300k. Pretty normal showing here. Nothing amazing or surprising. The lack of a PS2 version didn't change anything at all.

T3B > 200k. Decent enough if viewed as a western targeted game released in Japan, but with the PSP dead outside of Japan I don't think they have that luxury. I doubt it'll ever reach 300k, which is kinda bad for a high budget title. It's still selling better than most of S-E's recent releases though.

SaGa3 launch = hahahahahahaahahahahahahaha wow holy bomba. Serious decline there. 100k (SaGa2 FW) -> 27k? Really? Wtf happened there?

Could retailers have slashed the price too soon? I don't see it reaching 600K either but what if it does. Do price slashed games ever get reorders?

The Little Battlers toy isn't needed for gameplay, it will be recieving a weekly anime series, and has some multiplayer component (IIRC). I want to say it should easily do better than Ni No Kuni is struggling to do, but the DS's install base, and the Ghilbi appeal work against that.

Also, would you happen to know what's the record for how many new games (multiple SKUs allowed, re-releases not) a single publisher released in one week?

Nintendo at system launches has the record. If you don't count Famicom Mini as re-releases they had 10 new games at a week.

A Mario game containing FF characters doing well in Japan is a surprise over an IP that's barely made a blip on the radar since the 16-bit generation?

The previous Mario sports game that featured Final Fantasy characters was released on DS during 2006 (its biggest year ever), and it didn't beat 500k.

Let's be fair. The big retailers have NOT dropped their prices as far as I know.

Amazon and resellers have been selling the game for cheap, but I question their actual effect on the MC/Famitsu charts.

The 1st month Launch line-up for 3ds is up! 24 games, from what I can find seems to be one of the largest(in terms of numbers) one month out launch line-ups in Japan.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/software/spring2011.html

Although Looking through the list of what was changed, besides the baseball games, Steel Diver(thanks to Nintendo publishing) and perhapses Naruto/Gundam can't imagine any of this stuff actually selling in Japan.

Branding issue: Re-taking a look at the ads in the train station today, I find it interesting the positioning of 3ds as A DS in 3D! Advertising almost seems to be putting it into the same light as the Ds / DSi change, not a new platform, just a platform revision. Probably a smart strategy.

Not really. If you're under the impression it's a hardware revision why would you spent $100 more on it than a normal DSi?

OMG It's gonna be totally awesome !!!

Pokemon BW proved that mega-launches mean relatively slower legs later down the line. You have to compensate at some point, and Portable 3rd is looking like it won't be an exception to this.

Well, I meant of this generation, but I didn't clarify so fair enough. I knew the Rare games sold better. But there's really no competition in the space, is there? Western games lately top out around what, 300k or so.
I think in the last decade or so GTAs and recent Call of Duty games have been the high points. Vice City PS2 with ~600K between original and budget release is the highest among them, and DKCR already has that beat.

Yeah, I remember Final Fantasy X-2 being incredibly frontloaded. When the franchise is already hyped to heaven, it is pretty difficult to avoid such sales curves.

Donkey Kong on the other end. It is difficult to explain why it is so popular. I thought it would do 200k-ish. I can't really tell from here why he shifted so much interest.

Yes, so difficult to explain.

I never thought a traditional Nintendo-developed 2D platformer with good marketing support, starring a known character and released in time for the holidays could sell good.

How could you say it a year ago when it was revealed at E3?

Nothing could guarantee the size of success DKCR has in Japan.

It's strange, that obviously 2D platformers are quite popular only a few big developers (namely Nintendo and Sega ;)) try to release serious efforts in this genre :/.

I wonder if Nintendo are considering going for a platform game release every year around Christmas? It seems to work for them.

Not all 2D platformers are that big.
If it's not Mario/DK/Kirby, it's not gonna make much of an impact.

Donkey Kong Country as a series was dead before DKCR so even if donkey Kong is related to the Mario Universe, it is still impressive that it managed to sell as much.

I can not understand how can people downplay this performance and say it was "a given" and anyone could have told a year ago. Those are the ones living under a rock.

DCKR will very likely reach the million faster than both Mario Galaxies. Sure, you will tell me that I should compare to NSMBWii and you'd be right if we talked about gameplay but I am trying to point out that people won't just buy whatever that has a well known mascot in the boxart or games in particular genres, like 2d-platforming.

People in japan (which seems to be the most quality demanding country, with the hardest market to crack, in regards to videogames) have a choice and getting them to buy about a 1 million of your games is not an easy task, at all.

jeez...
