But I think you're making an assumption there. It may well be a correct assumption, don't get me wrong; I just don't think it's right to present it as a fact.

I own a PS4 and a Wii U right now because I'm a collector and will own all systems in due course. But I suspect I'd have bought a PS4 at launch anyway, without that caveat. And that would have been a mistake, and I'd be regretting it now; I would have bought into the hype. I've not purchased a PS4 game since launch; I've not played anything outside the launch games I bought and the first wave of PS+ titles.

It's hard to be completely certain; I accept I'm trading in a 'what if' scenario somewhat. As an example: it's a reason why I've been a bit vehement about DriveClub, despite that being a game I'm somewhat interested in; it would have been a reason for purchasing the system at launch, and it got heavily delayed. Until DriveClub actually is *launched*, the promise of future DriveClub is indeed part of the hype.
Everything posted on here unless it's some sort of empirical data should be taken as opinion. I think it's valid opinion, and that it's reflective of the consumer-base. But I don't feel the need to add that caveat in regularity.

In any event, yes consumers aren't always rational.
It's probably more rational to buy the systems after everything you think you'll want to play for them is available. It's probably most logical to wait until the price reaches a point when it realistically won't drop any further. Or to wait until game prices hit rock bottom rather than pre-ordering things that will be available in abundance. Games aren't necessities, they're just enjoyment in the end and it's more rational to spend such money elsewhere.

I just don't think there's anything particularly irrational about purchasing these systems now, for the entertainment value they offer now even if the underlying reason is more long term thinking.

I haven't played Revelations. But for what I've read the game is full of closed spaces and it's quite dark. Using small areas / corridors and darkness / fog to hide drawing distance have been used by game developers since forever to push graphics on "weak" systems. :p

Not that I'm trying to downgrade Capcom's effort or how cool Revelations looks :)
Zombies aren't very scary in brightly lit spacious places.

I did another look to the Idolm@ster franchise and can say One for All did pretty good at its first week and best on consoles but 20k away from the psp but that had a much bigger install base.

I think what is going on is that you must be really bored to start again with the first day preorder rankings on amazon.
It's just that I wasn't expecting such demand for this game right as preorders started being available, especially since it's on Wii U. It's obvious that it's impossible to see if it's going to translate into great sales at this stage, but it's a surprising start for me, very doubtful about it's potential on Wii U.

Treasure Box - 1st
Premium Box - 7th
Regular Edition - 11th

The heck is going on :lol
I assume that Musou games are for the much more dedicated gamers; the ones who actually use Amazon to pre-order games; good numbers, but they'll fall fast

Mpl90 gets very excited easily by inconsequential things as long as there's some vague relation to Nintendo involved. Nothing new here.

Some VNs with LEs, that sell only 10k, climb to the top of Amazon charts as soon as they are available.

Amazon charts are much more about for how long the game stays on top. And even staying in the top 10 for weeks may mean selling not much more than 100k.

The US version of Minecraft PS3 is #11 on Amazon JP right now. That's the real news.
Honestly? It's really a big news, I'm wondering when MC will be officially released in Japan on consoles, there's money that could be made.

By the way, do we know possible stats about the PC version in Japan?

there was like 6 versions of love live vita game in the top 10 amazon ranks for a week when it first came up for pre order last year.

first week anything will chart, I think Zelda Muso will do decently but amazon pre orders are probably the worst thing to get excited about

That Tecmo-Koei is publishing Zelda Musou in Japan interests me, too. Not because of the revenue split (Mplol90) but because of the costs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the costs of publishing and development are both entirely the burden of the publisher under normal circumstances?

Nintendo needs third-party partners more than Tecmo-Koei needs Nintendo, so I would think that Nintendo would foot the entire bill. Though I guess if Nintendo publishes this in America, all it may amount to is Tecmo Koei printing the disks for the Japanese run, which will probably be pretty small.

I still want another game in the Soma Bringer world. :(
I want another game in the Soma Bringer art style. And Soma Bringer itself.

Indeed. Capcom's work on the 3DS is nothing short of magic sometimes. RER is incredibly gorgeous, especially in 3D. As for Ace Attorney 5, it has the best 3D effect imo, and gorgeous visuals (though it's a VN/ADV game, so it's easier to get such results).
AA5 is not a visual novel, it's a linear command based adventure.

Visual novel refers to either games with a novel (as in text) narration in the strict sense or to multi pathed adventures in the broader sense. No need for the "VN/", it's a traditional adventure, fair and square. Without branching paths.

Wikipedia, TVTropes, and the Visual Novel Database website seem to think that it can be called a VN. So it's seems to be a fairly popular mistake, at the very least.

There is alot of confusion about the term in the West, yes. Comes mostly from the time when multi pathed adventures (which were influenced by novel games) ported to Saturn were called VNs by their publishers. To many people (in the West especially) it wasn't perfectly clear that the multi path aspect was the reason why they were called by that term. This was also when the term broadened its meaning, to include traditional adventures that had adopted the heavily branching path concept.

The definition I gave is from the Japanese wikipedia. From what I've seen, often the term ビジュアルノベル系 (VN-related) is used for VNs in the broad sense, in other words non-novel games with branching paths.

Is Kaz Hirai saying that PS4 hardware is profitable already?

I know. That doesn't change that those kind of tricks makes easier to push graphics on a platform though :p

I wasn't trying to downplay the game. If the game was designed around small areas and in the end is and looks good, perfect.

Yes, and that it differs in that regard to the business model of previous platforms.
So no pricecut this year. Ok.

Not that I was expecting it.

Investors must be really relived, seeing how PlayStation financials were during the first half of past generation.

Like I said in the April NPD thread, console buyers can be roughly divided into two groups: the early adopters who will buy the system ASAP no matter what, and everyone else who will wait until more games come out, a specific game comes out, or a price drop. PS4 stock at launch was much better than previous consoles, so early adopter sales were very front-loaded. The quality of its library is going up at the same rate as most consoles, though, so the rest of the world is buying them at the same rate, leading to lower sales per month but higher LTD sales at this point in the cycle compared to previous ones.

It's happening everywhere, but it's especially prominent in Japan because most of the good games on the system right now are franchises/genres that Japan traditionally doesn't give a shit about. If sales are still terrible once FFXV and other games from franchises that actually sell over there come out, then you can start proclaming the death of console gaming in Japan.

It's been a while since a Biohazard game has caught my attention, it has been added to my list of games to play this summer.

You mean if FFXV comes out, it's the only thing that has my interest on that platform, and SE has been jerking me around with the game for 8 years now. I bought a PS3 to play that game, won't make the same mistake again.

I like what he does with comgnet but now Amazon as well.

Come on.
He has always commented about Amazon pre-orders and positions. And while the information we can gather from those posts are far less useful than Comgnet, I don't see what the problem with talking about it in a sales thread is.

Amazon can be useful when its monthly totals. Many people do that in the NPD thread. Daily are useless.

sorry, I meant "by how much"? I don't think MK8 will have any significant impact on WiiU's sales, but should move at least 30k...better keep expectations low lol
I think it'll have the biggest impact of any software release thus far. What that amounts to remains to be seen.

30k opening week would probably qualify as a significant impact, coming off of all the sub 10k weeks. Hard to predict the size of the bump.

The more important thing will be to see what the new baseline is after kart dies down a bit or how quickly it goes back sub 10k.

They only expect a million worldwide so it would be wow.

Still too bad though probably.
You didn't get it. 450k would be an amazing result but would demand a miracle.

When someone tries to make fun of the sales of a game using the sales of another he should know what that game trully sold.

450K in Japan would be amazing for the game. That'd be selling on 3D World levels which would be insane. Btw, One Piece Warriors sold like crazy on PS3. Any particular reason for that or was it just the right combination?

One Piece is probably the biggest manga/anime property in Japan

The gap between One Piece and no.2 is huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge; no expert on that field, but One Piece is crazy succesful

One piece went from 800k+ to 400k+. One piece is insanely popular in Japan but iirc the first game was not good.

DW fan base (whats left of them) are also on PS and Zelda has been reduced to a 300k on Wii.

Now a DW Zelda game on WiiU.....yeah
