Wait, really?

What are the big complaints?

Was looking forward to this game...

Kotaku =/= word of mouth

Eh, I'm a little dubious on putting any stock in things like this, sort of like Amazon.jp's scores after an initial release. I don't really know if there's a way to accurately measure "word-of-mouth", which is sort of a nebulous concept and really comes down to anecdotes (which is what word of mouth is?)

I would say that Xenoblade's sales in Japan (and drop off) speak more for themselves than a user score aggregator, which feels a bit flimsy.

Not that I am saying it's wrong or anything, but user score aggregations aren't usually very useful. Especially ones based on a paltry 18 reviews.
Look at Amazon reviews for some games. You'd think they were the worst games ever made based on some of them.

Once again, great numbers for Splatoon. I hope Nintendo realise they need to keep investing into new IPs and genres to expand their audience and appeal range from now on.

81k for Splatoon in Famitsu is really, really impressive. Also, Stella Glow has nearly 17k there (still not very good, though).

From a japanese user score aggregator, a friend of mine linked me this pic.
:(

While it might be a bit pre-mature to say this, I don't think the new XBX will receive the same universal acclaim as the original, which sucks.

I guess it is time for FFXV to step up and take the crown of JRPG of the generation from Xenoblade.

I am half serious with this comment :p

Yeah, a year ago people were CERTAIN PS4 would overtake Wii U LTD in 2016. At the time I said 2017 was more likely, with "never" still being unable to be ruled out.

Now, we can probably rule out "never" I suppose. But 2017 is still looking like the smarter bet. 2016 isn't looking highly likely at this point, but who knows.

Surprised by Splatoon's hold and Wii U's increase. Not bad.

Hell, there were even some posters that were sure the LTDs would cross by september 2015.

So what are our guesses for Splatoon's LTD in Japan?

Even though I don't really think a user review aggregator means a lot, the impressions from the GAF import thread sort of confirm as much. It seems like a more specific experience that doesn't really handle a lot of the complains from the first game, while simultaneously not really leaning into many things about the first game that people really enjoyed. The overall impressions still seem to be positive, but I see it more as a game that hovers around an 75-85 on MC versus Xenoblade.

Doesn't mean you won't enjoy it, or that you will!

LTD should be around 300-350k. I doubt if it crosses 500k but again Nintendo IPs have crazy legs especially during holidays so it can limp along to that LTD.

Pretty much, just like Ni No Kuni.

I am just waiting for a confirmed date for the west.

This is kind of terrible.
I wonder how expensive XCX was to make. I know it's a lot cheaper than the Witcher 3, but it's probably magnitudes more expensive than a Paper Mario or even a "phoned in" Pokemon game. I"m sure #FE will make XCX look good, but I'm wondering if Nintendo should bother with console RPGs.

LTD 300k? Considering digital we should already be way beyond that number.

Well, the first Xenoblade did better in the West than in Japan (though "West" is a very, very large region), and given XCX's structure versus the first game as well as its potential release windows in the West (fall/winter for the holidays), its success or failure seems more tied to its overseas sales than its Japanese sales.

That doesn't mean that XCX will be profitable. Or, if it is, be highly highly profitable. Just that these numbers are a smaller part of the story than you'd expect from your typical jRPG.

Yeah, my guess was a little less than 500k, but who knows. Japan can't decide if they're squid or kid!

And Ni No Kuni is a great comparison, I think.

Wii U going up is the most surprising thing this week for me.

It needs to stay above 15k next week.

Weird that Splatoon will likely outsell Zelda in Japan. Or...not weird.

Yoshi

Headmaster of Console Warrior Jugendstrafanstalt
Splatoon + Mario Maker > Mario Kart + Smash?

that would be a big surprise

If Wii U 2015 really ends up beating Wii U 2014, then Mario Kart 8 will probably have played a factor in sustaining sales in weaker weeks, too - I'm sure the console would have fared a lot better, had Mario Kart 8 not released last year.

I think we should all pause for a moment and consider this...At the moment the only thing preventing the Japanesse traditional gaming meltdown is a WiiU game. Even more crazy is the WiiU being the best selling console for two weeks. Just let that filter through your mind for a while.

LTD 300k? Considering digital we should already be way beyond that number.

Going by Famitsu, I think it's hovering around 270-290K if you include digital. Of course this is estimations based on nintendo's rankings and previous digital sales.

Well, there's W101, funded Bayonetta 2, made Xenoblade X, etc which are home console titles that there's no counterpart to the 3DS. The difference really has been the appeal, and marketing as well. Just the fanarts alone for Splatoon from Japan has been so huge. You really can see that the audience there has grown attached to the characters.
You're forgetting Xenoblade 3D :).

As someone responsible for a miniscule part of some of those PS3>PS4 numbers in the recent past (Sengoku Musou 4, Dragon Quest Heroes, etc.); I'm buying a PS4 this summer, and I suspect a lot of other people are too for games such as Sengoku Musou 4-II, Godzilla VS., Sengoku Basara 4-Samuragi (which I greatly debated between PS3 and PS4), Chaos; Child, Final Fantasy XV, and Batman Arkham Knight.

Also (at least for the summer) the current game line-up for Vita is looking better than 3DS, with Taiko no Tatsujin V and Tokyo Xanadu.

Wait what? the 3DS's summer lineup is fairly fantastic though o_O.

Rhythm Heaven+, Dragon Ball Extreme Butouden, Fire Emblem If, Youkai Watch Busters, The Great Ace Attorney, DQ8 3DS, etc....

Famitsu Sales: Week 23, 2015 (Jun 01 - Jun 07)

01./01. [WIU] Splatoon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 81.764 / 238.374 <80-100%> (-48%)
06./05. [WIU] Mario Kart 8 # <RCE> (Nintendo) {2014.05.29} (¥6.156) - 11.485 / 1.014.240 <80-100%> (+1%)
22./22. [WIU] Mario Party 10 # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2015.03.12} (¥5.616) - 1.905 / 154.860 <80-100%> (-21%)
26./00. [WIU] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker # <ADV> (Nintendo) {2014.11.13} (¥3.996) - 1.806 / 152.335 <80-100%>
29./24. [WIU] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U # <FTG> (Nintendo) {2014.12.06} (¥7.776) - 1.687 / 648.238 <80-100%> (-13%)

Toad charted again? Interesting. Maybe it's the traditional gamer who bought it more the 1st week, and more the families this week?
Thanks for the charts as always Chris!

Yeah. I mean the sales are around the same as the Wii title in Japan and without Zelda more eyes will be on it in the West.

Nintendo started development before it was even known the game was coming North America.

Monolith Soft is first-party and it's not like the main team could really make anything other than an RPG.

I also think the engine they made will be reused for their next game and there could be a port of X to Nintendo's next handheld. It's way too early to call it a failure.

Splatoon achieving this number on the homeland bodes well for how this new franchise will fare in the long run worldwide. It will almost assuredly now surpass the 1.5 million mark, and 2 million is not out of the question when all is said and done.

For handhelds to be so dominant in Japan I'm still surprised at how the handheld version has cannibalized the console version of Super Smash Bros 4.

Let's hope that with the next major DLC the game gets a boost. I still think Smash Wii U can reach 1 million over the next few years.

Is there any way to tell if Mario Karts 2nd DLC had any noticeable affect on the sales trend?

If Wii U 2015 really ends up beating Wii U 2014, then Mario Kart 8 will probably have played a factor in sustaining sales in weaker weeks, too - I'm sure the console would have fared a lot better, had Mario Kart 8 not released last year.

Mario Kart is a system seller but it's also a really opportunistic game. If the console it's on is selling well for other reasons it will also get a bump in sales. People who wouldn't buy the console for Mario Kart pick it up once they decide to bite.

Over 200K in two weeks is really great for Splatoon. It started off way better in Japan than Hyrule Warriors did and that joined the million seller club thanks to sales outside Japan. There are almost double the Wii U owners in the Americas than in Japan so if Splatoon interest is proportional things will be looking up for the inklings.

If it does well on the npd tomorrow I'm thinking 1.5 Million worldwide (shipped) by the end of this quarter is fairly likely

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I can't tell if this is sarcasm...

He did.

Honestly, it's quite hard to gauge the Japanese Retail Gaming Industry as of late.

Splatoon has a good chance of reaching 500K LTD in Japan as it already eclipsed Super Smash in download sales.

I think for the reasons others have stated this tells us less about XCX than it does about the Witcher 3. While the Witcher 3 was almost certainly more expensive to make, it was equally certainly cheaper to localize for the Japanese market than XCX was to make. If even in the RPG genre, major games are struggling to break 100K-120K, and Tales is topping out around 350K, might it not make more sense for Sony to adopt a localization rather than funding strategy for the PS4 and future consoles in Japan if the current bid to revive the Japanese market fails? Afterall, games like the Witcher 3 will be made in the Western market, and with Microsoft dead in Japan, and Nintendo with no 3rd party support, Sony will have a de facto monopoly on Western games going forward.

I could easily see a scenario where Sony concludes that if the Playstation 4(and 5) are likely to settle around Vita numbers anyway(4 million or so) and funded JRPGs at 200K, it would simply make more sense just to dump Western software on them, throw promotion resources at it, and hope that can boost the Witcher 4 from 150K to 250K or so.

For all the Nintendo v. Sony talk, and the Xenoblade X v. Witcher comparisons, the Playstation 4 and WiiU are really no longer in direct competition. They have very different software libraries, likely appeal to different audiences, play a different role in global strategies, and the efforts to branch outside their comfort areas have been mixed at best(Bayonetta 2, XBC). The success or failure of the Playstation 4 in Japan is of minimal importance to Sony, Nintendo or the Playstation Brand. It will determine whether console JRPGs, and the Japanese 3rd party console development industry survives however. I think the evidence from the Vita/3DS race is that a failure of the Playstation 4 will not result in those games going to Nintendo, but rather not existing at all.

if Splatoon does over 2.5 million WW, it will be bigger than the biggest Metroid and F-Zero games were ever and on Wii U to boot.

that might actually keep them dead since Nintendo would be more inclined to try new IPs instead of sequels to old series. it'd be, why spend xx$ amount in making another Metroid game if they can spend the same xx$ to make a new IP that could sell much better.

A wild Pokemon XY appeared!
I don't know why this game has had such terrible legs.

Splatoon, on the other hand, is having great legs

You said that about Mario Party 10 hitting 300K and currently it looks like it's going to disappoint =(. Or are you expecting some kind of ridiculous longterm legs? I could see 200K still though.

Last time you were expecting 150k LTD for MP10.

On the Wii U side, well at least Mario Party 10 is having some legs... I guess it has a chance to hit like 150K?

If it lost ~20% of sales each week for the next 5 weeks MP10 would be at 150K, so I guess 150K LTD should be in reach barring some other event cutting into its legs... (Golden Week is around the end of the month right?)

I don't know where this idea that Mario Party suddenly stops selling comes from but if someone look at previous entries he'll see the legs this game has. The game will be over 200k before the end of this year.

MP Island Tour still charts from time to time, and despite the "not so good" FW of Mario Party 9 it ended with more than 700.000 LTD

Mario Party games have crazy legs. I don't know if it'll reach 300.000 but I'm pretty sure it'll reach 250.000. We'll see in 2-3 years ;D

Best selling Metroid and F-Zero games did 2.75m and 2.85m respectively, so not quite.

Wow, Splatoon might be the most important Nintendo game of this generation. Not important as in "selling a kajillion units" because it obviously won't pass Smash or Mario Kart in sales. But important because its success so far might actually wake up Nintendo and re-think their IPs and the way they market them. Nintendo is a nervous sort of company, so some success in a new area might make them branch out a little more.

Should be interesting to see if the title can be evergreen or if it's reached saturation already.
