Media Create Sales: Week 25, 2014 (Jun 16 - Jun 22)

It is not, Smash will sell more consoles than MK8 did, a whole lot more.

MK is more popular and easy to play game than Smash which is a hardcore game. So, i don't expect better than MK, but its coming in holidays so nintendo sales will be very good because of all the nintendo games and not just because of Smash alone.

Welp, Wii U.

I guess all they can really do now is focus on software sales, getting the existing base to actually buy games, so another DK doesn't happen. Hardware sales seem like a lost cause. It's all about attach rate now. Smash is next.

Probably not as interesting as you'd think.

Yes...

As I said in the past, Sony lucked out in the West because consoles are still dominant here, and because Microsoft shot themselves in the foot. A subpar launch lineup was irrelevant.

Maybe someone has called you out for this already but why are you so anti-Sony? They didn't "luck out" in the west, the launch was excuted near-flawlessly. Everything from price to marketing, it was just a bonus MS messed up. What happened to Nintendo in the west? They had a great price and concept plus games and look what happened...

They went where the money is, and that's 3DS and Mobile
LOL Yeah, because 3DS hasn't had sharp declines YOY. On one hand you say Japan is doomed and on the other you seem to believe the 3DS is a viable platform for 3rd party.

98% of smartphones games sells revenue are from free to play it dosn't look like traditionnal games is doing well on smartphones so i believe 3rd party will start support ps4 soon or later
Sony should make a special bundle of MGS5 just like Ps3 MGS4 bundle Ps3 sale sold 75k on MGS4 week compared to 11k in the previous week.

This this this.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

YOY HW declines maybe true, but the software sells and that is whats most important for 3rd partys - games like the latest Harvest Moon, Youkai Watch and Persona Q are performing well.

I'm guessing PS4 will get another AA Sony Japan title (like Knack) before the end of the year. Something like Hot Shots Golf, or Ape Escape. They have to be doing something more than just helping Capcom and From.

Yeah idk why/how they didnt get a HSG out, I know garaph is out of date and only goes up to feb 2013, but HSG was still 20th best selling PS3 game at 400k on the sites db(anyone got a update where it stands?) even though it released in 2008 before PS3 woke up

I wonder what Smash Bros WiiU will be priced at and if that will have any affect on the sales. Maybe the 3DS version will be around 3000yen or something when the WiiU version launches.

In Japan, the market has shifted. Consoles are done.
In that case, you can say that every successful gaming system have lucked out though. The companies were lucky that there werent more competition in a specific field (Nintendo was the only one who had that type of motion control with the Wii, just to take one example) and they were lucky that so many people were interested in the product. In a sense, thats true, but saying that they lucked out, then it looks like (in my opinion) that its being said that it was just a random chance that is the main reason for the success, and not mainly because of all the hard work and preperation that was put into the product.

Its true that a company can never know for sure how well a product will sell before they release it, but looking at marketing trends and doing so market research isnt that uncommon when making a product, trying to make something that has a higher chance of selling. This applies to everyone, so everyone is just as lucky in that sense if their product is a success.

You can also say that Nintendo lucked out with the 3DS in Japan because handhelds are dominant there, and because Sony didnt have that big success with the Vita. Personally i wouldnt say that it was because of luck. I would say that it was because they (Nintendo) built upon something that was already successful, and they did a good job with this.

Freedom Wars 179k opening week, I don't think it will break 200K first week... I feel like it is not being advertised or marketed heavily.

I hope I'm wrong though .

If you count the Best release its at 600k.

Yeah I expected a new Hot Shots by the end of this year. Eager to see how it will look as well.

I hope so. I don't think Clap Hanz have done anything else other than port the Vita version to PS3 a year after it launched. They've basically had 3 years to come up with something.

Exactly thats the reason I think it will sell more systems, up to this point the WiiU has only seen casual/family friendly games from Nintendo, Smash appeals to both, more so than any other franchise, including MK.

Also lol, I wasnt even taking into account the holidays.

There's that Sonic game too? But I think Nintendo is co-funding?
The lack of a domestic market on home consoles means publishers need to make choices about where better to direct their resources. For some, this will mean developing towards the Western market, even more-so than they are already. For others it will be in realms like mobile and F2P PC; or a combination of both.

Smaller niche titles will probably remain relatively unaffected right now, as they built towards smaller audiences and are costed appropriately. But big budget endeavors primarily focused on the Japanese market are probably in more precarious positions.

This is why I started this thread a while back detailing the dangerous forest the lineage of Japanese gaming has to cross now. That lure of mobile yenny is far too strong and too cheap to make to expect the flagging domestic market to burden any but a fraction of the sales of most titles not named "Monster Hunter".

March 20 is likely a mistake (I guess they got it from Famitsu or some other Japanese magazine and probably mixed it up with 3DO Japanese release date), it should be March 31. The Nintendo figures match these.

Japanese FY shipments:

Code:
                92(03) 93(03) 94(03) (LTD)
Super Famicom 3.05m 4.15m 3.18m (11.82m)
Game Boy 2.16m 1.81m 1.05m (10.02m)
Famicom 1.20m 740k 470k (18.6m)
Mega Drive 400k 450k (3.45m)
Game Gear 300k 350k (1.25m)
Mega CD 200k 80k 100k (380k)
LaserActive 42k (42k)
3DO 40k (40k)
Neo Geo (300k)

Wow depressing week. Wii U continuing it's slide back down. Probably sub-10k even in MC next week I would guess :\

PS4 being PS4. Wonder how low it'll get this year

PSV is disappointing as the market is not at all saturated with it and yet it continues to do so poorly. 3DS sales are okay? Especially when considering how saturated the market is

At least PS3 should break 10M sold next week

Yeah their E3 showing overall was embarrassing.

At Giant Bomb they mentioned that the Konami booth was pretty much empty space filled with nothing. They only came so that no one would take their spot on the show floor and were hard at work trying to prevent people from taking pictures and videos of their empty booth.

They said that Capcom's area was similar.

Oh man, this sounds so sadly hilarious. :lol

3000 yen? Why would their bit 3DS holiday release besides Pokemon be sold for 3k yen in the busiest time of the year? It will be one of the higher priced first party 3DS titles at launch and probably stay that way for the next 2 years lol.

Another bad week. :/
The two consoles look horrible, the Vita is about to join them in the sub-10k club, and even the 3yo 3DS looks like it's running on fumes at this point.
Gen 9 is gonna be really interesting. I'm curious to know how Nintendo and SONY will approach the Japanese market when they have the chance to start all over.

I suspect that Nintendo is probably the most likely out of the two to actually try and do something.
SONY seems pretty western focused at this point, so I'm not expecting much from them in Japan.

I remember the days when I bought a newly launched SNES with a brand new copy of Final Fantasy IV. That was a good day. And I know I may never see it again, at least not with Square Enix's help.

SNES games never cost tens of millions to develop. The Japanese market isn't big enough to reliably support AAA games on it's own. So publishers have to look to the worldwide market. However in doing so they damage the Japanese market since they don't target it as directly leading to a vicious cycle.

PSV is disappointing as the market is not at all saturated with it and yet it continues to do so poorly. 3DS sales are okay? Especially when considering how saturated the market is

3DS has some strong software sales. Animal Crossing and Pokemon over 4M, and Monster Hunter over 3M. Then lot of other successes like Mario Kart and Yokai Watch. So it's like it's hit a couple of different 'hardcore' audiences to achieve fast sales but then after exhausting those it's wider appeal is more limited. Nintendogs and Brain Training were the franchises to broaden appeal but both declined.

I think (key word there) that he was referring to the fact that the two new consoles aren't doing too hot and not upset that Wii U is outselling PS4.

Even in that case I still don't think it is very fair to say 'you suck Japan'. PS4 has no games and the Wii U doesn't sell any where.

SNES games never cost tens of millions to develop.

They weren't cheap and business was still risky. Square almost went out of business from their ventures on the NES, and that was even less technologically advanced. How about changing the business of making games. No Man's Sky didn't cost tens of millions of dollars. Splatoon almost certainly didn't cost tens of millions of dollars. Yet they have plenty of buzz.

Hey, here's a free idea: a new 2d Final Fantasy on a console, ala Megaman 9/10.

The general state of the market is only part of the story.

Shit, imagine a Bravely Default style JRPG with HD graphics and some nice shaders. It would look great and probably sell well but wouldn't cost a huge amount to produce.

I'm not anti-Sony, but I'm just not liking how they're handling several aspects of this current generation. That's not to say they've done nothing right, but I have issues and I like to voice them. I've done the same for Nintendo and Microsoft in the past, as well.

But fun games aren't enough to sell in the West. Graphics are the most important factor.

Chill dude

they dont have any games yet

Just wait until Bloodborne, FFXV and KH3 hit

Which come out when exactly? Bloodborne is going to be 2015 with no push backs and with the lack of new info on ffXV and SE's recent output rate I dont expect that until 2016. KH3 lol after FFvsXIII/FFXV I expect that to be a PS5 title. It not like SE has shown anything more then a concept teaser.

The only way that would work is if a majority if not all of the bigger publishes started to think that way because nobody wants to be the only one doing that and having their games overshadowed by the ones with a ton of money pumped into them.

Brutal numbers.

I think one of the big side effects of the higher dev costs is there are less interesting releases/releases in general, which leads into the loss of gamer engagement.

Though much of the content releases on mobile is of varied quality, the fact is that steady stream of releases means there is something new to experience for the gamer all the time, leading into strong engagement.

No wonder gaming is growing in Japan, just not on traditional platforms.

That would save Japan.

But what would it cost to develop today, considering the level of graphical fidelity the PS4 blockbusters demand? And how many copies would it need to sell to recoup?

(I still think it will happen if all else fails for Square-Enix)
