Media Create Sales: Week 26, 2014 (Jun 23 - Jun 29)

Don't forget 4Gamer.net, they usually got some nice line pics, too.

By the way, do we have any info on the original shipment for the game? Pretty sure Level-5 learned their lesson and will try to avoid shortages as much as possible, so I'm expecting a big ass shipment... and some shortages at launch.

And for Christmas, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo had a Youkai Watch 2 bundle, especially if they do launch a new 3DS model. Makes me wonder if they'll do the "Premium Pack" this year too.

What we know so far is that the last time i checked, pre-orders for Youkai Watch 2 were closed in Yamada Denki and Bic Camera. Still available in Yodabashi, though. Also pre-orders closed on Amazon.jp since forever.

That could mean two things. Small shipment, ir strong pre-orders (or both).

That sentence gave me Ni no Kuni flashbacks.

But I'm sure YW2 will do very well and sell out.

They didn't start taking new pre-orders? I thought it was just temporary... Well then, guess shortages at launch are pretty much unavoidable at this point. That, or Level-5 is keeping some copies for Day one buyers who didn't pre-order (is it a common practice in Japan?).

Problem is, manufacturing cartridges takes significantly longer than just printing new discs (it's the reason why Spike-Chunsoft couldn't meet demand for AoT this Christmas... the fact that it was the busiest season of the year didn't help either), so maybe Nintendo couldn't increase production in time? But anyway, guess we'll know next week when we get some shipment data. Day 1 sales are gonna be interesting too.

The publisher doesnt decide that. Its the stores decide if they want to go all pre-orders or keep some for walk-ins too. Generally the larger stores do have walk-ins. Smaller ones tend to be pre-orders only for something this big these days for the first batch anyways.

RE: MH4U sales vs MH4 sales

This is the first time that a mainline entry and the G expansion are released on the same platform post-growth of the MH IP. It is also being released a year after MH4 on the same platform

MHP2 and MHP2G were released on the PSP, but the former was a port of the PS2 game and the latter is the biggest MH game in terms of content with stuff from the first two games.

Now MH4 has tons of content already in it, so MH4U would likely surpass MHP2G in terms of content.

As for the sales though, I feel like it may fall short of MH4 regardless of how good it is or the amount of content. Though there is some leg room for MH4U to beat MH4 I guess.

Persona 4: Golden is about to reach 300.000 units sold at retail, the only other PS Vita game that has crossed that mark is God Eater 2.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster should also be very close if we add all three different SKU's.

Well of course I expect it to be yoy up, just wondering how much and surprised it isn't already.
You never said anything to suggest that though and instead suggested the opposite, trying to argue the baseline didn't change which would mean that MK8 did not have typical Nintendo legs which makes it effective for a longer time. You also didn't understand when people said Wii U is up YOY and cited YTD sales instead.

Oh and as I said earlier Pikmin 3 released last year and gave an almost identical hardware boost to Mario so WiiU is going to fall behind by 50k or so at July.

MC 2013 July week sales for Wii U:

8.251
22.199
14.280
11.373
sum: 56103

If we assume a baseline of 6k per week/24k for the month (which is probably a bit too low), Pikmin boosted sales by 32k. That is less than the 50k you are assuming. It is even less if we assume a higher baseline.

Also, the baseline is now definitely higher after MK8, I'm gonna assume 9k per week for the month (this week it's over 10k actually). So that would be another 12k we need to subtract from the 32k it presumably will fall behind again.

So this would set it back by 20k, or less if the baseline turns out higher than the 9k I assumed above. So where are you getting your 50k from?

In the following months there are also other new releases before the holidays which should help the baseline compared to last year.

Any talk of new baselines is still premature.

4 weeks after Pikmin released, the Wii U was still selling around the 10K mark.
8 weeks after, it was back at ~5K.

Will you continue to say the same thing every week? It really shows signs of stabilizing, unlike what happened with Pikmin.

Well, Minecraft PS3 Edition was no. 1 in its release week on PSN: https://store.sonyentertainmentnetw...ルランキング/cid=PN.CH.JP-PN.CH.MIXED.JP-PS3RANKING

It has 1631 reviews right now (as a comparison, Terraria is one year old and has 2110 reviews). Let's see if it'll sell enough to appear in the Famitsu downloads + physical ranking.

------------------

Watch Dogs is the highest Ubisoft first week sales ever (that I have on record from Famitsu):

Watch Dogs: 105,000~107,000 (PS3, 360, PS4)*
ACIII: 98,000 (PS3, 360, WIU)**
ACII: 84,000 (PS3, 360)
ACIV: 67,000 (PS3, 360, WIU, PS4)**
AC: 71,000 (PS3, 360)

* still missing the Wii U release.
** non simultaneous release, but I added all first weeks.

Will you continue to say the same thing every week? It really shows signs of stabilizing, unlike what happened with Pikmin.
The hardware sales are comparable week over week, so I'm not sure what point of difference you're referring to. I.e. it's still too soon.

And no, I won't say the same thing, if and when it's clear that it's actually at a baseline. If there's one lesson from these threads it's not to call a slowing decay a baseline until we're well past the cause of the rise, that doesn't just go for the Wii U.

What I always meant:

WiiU 2014 is selling worse than WiiU 2013. That should be clear. I think I may have used the term yoy incorrectly.

Also your totally going off track.

The 50k was comparison between WiiU 2014 and WiiU 2013.

WiiU right now is trailing by 26k. If it averages 8k a week throughout July then that leaves it down by 50k (compared to 2013's WiiU) at the end of July.

Eh, ok. I think the main difference this time is that software sales continue to be there, even if they're obviously pretty bad. I think just (poor) software legs are the key here, unlike last year where those disappeared to the bottom of the top 50 (or out of it) relatively quickly.

Have they hinted at Level 5 Vision 2014 on this note?

Obviously Yokai Watch is a huge success, but I'm curious what their strategy is for the other 80% of the company at this point.

I don't believe Hino and co. have hinted at a Level-5 announcement event this year. They still have a bunch of already announced stuff that hasn't come out yet:

- Wonder Flick (PS3/PS4/PSV/XB1/Wii U)
- Majin Station (iOS/Android)
- Layton 7 (3DS/iOS/Android)

But yeah, now that LBX and Inazuma Eleven are dead, they probably have some teams that are unaccounted for.
Prepare for Yokai Watch Racing, Yokai Watch: The Fighting, Yokai Watch: The Mini-Game Compilation, Yokai Watch Sports, Draw Yokai Watch, and whatever other uninventive spinoffs you can imagine!

Will Yokai Watch be the first franchise to the extreme exploitation from Level 5 in the long run.
I remember back prior to/slightly into Inazuma Eleven 2's release, most of us thought that could last a while too, but of course, we know it didn't.

I mean sure, Yokai Watch is more popular than Inazuma Eleven, but I think it's still too early to tell if it'll last or not.

It did sold over a million copies in the West alone, Namco should fund a sequel.

If they were doing another one on the PS4, I want them to make it more like Ghibli's slightly darker films such as Princess Mononoke. I think it may do even better in the West with an older main character and such a story style.

So what is the 3DS's lineup looking like for the rest of the year? At least larger titles?

This is what I'm aware of:
Youkai Watch 2 (both versions) - 7/10
Yoshi's New Island - 7/24
Dragon Ball Heroes Ultimate Mission 2 - 8/7
Smash Bros. 3DS - 9/13
Pokemon Alpha Ruby/Omega Sapphire - 11/21
MH4U? (does this have a date).

So out of curiosity, about 8 months back it seemed like Puzzles & Dragon Z did pretty well as a traditional handheld game. Why have we seen 0 follow-up to that on any front? I understand not hearing about a PDZ2 or anything, but I'm surprised we haven't heard of any other smart phone spinoffs going to traditional handhelds in all honesty in the past 7 months. Sure PDZ was probably a drop in the bucket in terms of profit compared to the phone game, but is that really the only reason? Or do you think these types of projects for the 3DS do exist, but they are just too early in development to announce?

Everything but Layton is vapourware. Seriously.
It wouldn't surprise me if they went all retard and bet everything on Youkai Watch. Dilute the franchise as much as possible just to be standing in the end with a bare arse and finally Konamiíng everything to oblivion.

True, but Tales has generally been a series on consoles thus I'm not too surprised seeing a port to the 3DS, which would be a far more traditional environment for it and RPGs in general.

Bandai-Namco have been a great supporter for the Nintendo 3DS. Dragon Ball Z is coming up, Tales of the World in October. I'm positive we will see another Toei Animation property for 3DS, most likely Sailor Moon.

I'm surprised that Monster Hunter 4 isn't higher by now. Isn't that about 1 million lower than Monster Hunter 3rd, not even counting re-releases?

3DS is over 15M, so install base shouldn't be an issue. Has Monster Hunter peaked in Japan?

It was 1.7m worldwide, 600k of which was DS. It had to have shipped near 200k total in Japan so I don't see how that's possible?

There is a good amount of digital sales due to shortages of the retail version at launch. As for what that number is, I'm not sure.

It currently sits at 4.1 million shipped since when ever this updated: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html
