Media Create Sales: Week 34, 2012 (Aug 20 - Aug 28)

I'm not worried about NSMB2 sales, it'll break 1 million retail for sure this week and with the holiday push it'll probably surge to top 3 best selling titles on the 3DS and it'll continue to sell for awhile ala MK7 and MH3G.

That's a fair point; I may overstate the "B"-team credentials of NSMB by not acknowledging the supervisory role played by Miyamoto. It's true that this was something significant at least in the symbolic sense, for those prior handheld games (SML,SML2) couldn't boast of a Miyamoto touch.

However, the DS game was still directed and designed by somewhat less than top brass, despite the push from Miyamoto to create an accessible 2D game within certain parameters. It marked the directorial debut of Amano, who then went on direct NSMBWii and NSMB2. His continued presence on NSMB2, combined with the higher profile of Tezuka (now as "producer" rather than the lesser "general producer") gives me the sense that NSMB2 is in no way a less primary entry than the first; quite the contrary.

And that's what I'm reacting to: some are calling this sequel more of a "B-team" effort than the first primarily due to the well-publicized story about Mario Cram School, but I read that somewhat differently. The DS game was a new effort on many fronts but sorely lacking in level design, and so fortunately this sequel--featuring the same director, now coming off his Wii success--has the added benefit of a team that has been better schooled in the fundamentals of Mario level design by Tezuka himself, now playing a somewhat larger role than before.

In other words: you're right that the NSMB series has always received more top-level attention than those old B-team games on the original Gameboy. But it's not at all true that NSMB2 is somehow coming from a lesser team. It has the same director, and arguably better honing of the core level design fundamentals thanks to Tezuka. I'd call it the greater of the 2, standing only behind the Wii game as an overall effort, despite its reused assets.

I don't understand the expansion pack argument, nsmb2 does a lot of different things not only in level design, but in new elements to mario:

-green blocks
-squids getting shot out of tubes in underwater levels
-giant bouncing boulders in underwater levels
-hidden bumper floors and hidden suspended bumper platforms in ghost houses
-ghost house with a wall in front of you and one behind, where both move independently
-the conceptual part of boohemoth (autoscrolling level that only autoscrolls if you look to the front)
-rotating brick platforms
-platform that only moves forward when you step on it
-castle stages. that wire frame you cling to and if you punch it it moves up or down
-blue cannon stages
-those pipes that produce an endless supply of goombas, right next to bouncing platforms
-disappearing spiderwebs
-gold stuff
all this off the top of my head, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of stuff. All of them used to make interesting levels. And there are the whole lot of traditional mario elements that get used in novel ways. Feels a lot like galaxy2 to me, the same engine, but does enough things on its own to stand on its own as an ok-to-great game depending on your taste (worse-than-et-to-great if you hate it I guess, everyone's entitled to his/her opinion, there are people who hate galaxy so everything is possible)

Is it only the art style?

Doesn't help that it's a visual novel unrelated to anything. Those usually aren't big sellers.

Yeah, even the Disgaea one opened sub-5k. Visual Novels tend to be cheaper to develop and have lower expectations, I think Clannad was the best selling VN not based on an existing property and not counting the original release only did something like, 100k, correct?

Steins;Gate sold 137k on PSP alone. 244k if you add all versions. Robotics;Note did pretty well too, but yeah VN aren't really big sellers.

The Nitroplus/5pb. games are really the exceptions though. Especially given those had a whole bunch of other media promoting them.

Wonder what NSMB2 implies for NSMBU, or rather what it implies as Nintendo's primary system seller for the Wii U this holiday afaik?

Oh and Wii Fit U.

I wonder how much Fate/stay Night Realta Nua will sell on Vita. It sold about 185k on PS2, pretty good sales for a VN I must say.

Well, NSMBU looks like the better game, definitely has the better pedigree and it actually leverages the uniqueness of it's platform. I guess we'll have to see.

You also forgot Nintendo Land. Wii U triple threat.

It'll sell well because Nintendo can advertise it as a new experience with the WiiU Tablet. I keep hoping they'll unveil a better feature then just "you can make blocks appear" though.

I'm assuming a pack-in - although probably not for Japan I guess.

Are we predicting Nintendo Land to emulate the success of Wii Sports?

Actual-PS3 is a reverse early-PSP

Games sell fine, hardware is tanking.

Thought it was interesting that, despite the different situations, the PS3 software is selling about the same as the PSP, while the Wii software was selling about the same as the GBA (the 3DS so far is basically the same as the GBA).

DS needs Pokemon Black 3 / White 3:

When are we going to get the results of the prediction league with DQX, NSMB2 and Oni Training?

Within the year.

I think NSMB2 will probably perform like Animal Crossing performed on the DS.

Slow and steady, significant holiday bump, and slow and steady till it dies.

DS needs Pokemon Black 3 / White 3:
If nintendo were interested in keeping DS sales going they would've dropped the DS price along with a special DS model/color for B/W 2 as well as stealth removed ds compatability from the XL model. However, they're more interested in keeping the 3DS above water which is wiser.

Edit: thought it was hardware graph not software. Crazy how inline the GBA sales are to the 3ds software sales.

Nintendo needs to stop manufacturing the DS in the US. For months DS and 3DS sales have been close, and a 3DS is only $30-$40 more than a DSi. I still think after 1.5 years the public thinks the 3DS is just another DS hardware revision. One way to end this, is to make the 3DS and 3DSXL the only options

There you have it. "Brain Age: Concentration Training"

Will only buy this downloadable, which probably means waiting quite a while to pick up a card on sale. :( Maybe the cards will work with B2G1 sales ...

But it's not at all true that NSMB2 is somehow coming from a lesser team.

Okay. Then they just made bad decisions in how to make/focus the game. Needed a table flip or something in the process of deciding what to focus on.

I don't understand the expansion pack argument, nsmb2 does a lot of different things not only in level design, but in new elements to mario:

Do you realize 1) how not particularly new and 2) how extremely minor most of those things are? So they messed around a little with some of the typical parameters in the Mario games. That doesn't make it "new" stuff. The only thing I'd really consider "new" in NSMB2 (and I've 100% the game with > 20 hours and 1m coins) is the Gold Flowers and Coin Rush. I like those new features, but really wish they'd put more actually useful new stuff in there. (i.e. The Gold Flower is only particularly useful as you grind to 1m coins through Coin Rush. It's a closed loop. Not like the fun feeling of Giant Mario trashing through levels or the mini Mario that could walk on water and super bounce off enemies or the propellor hat and shake-spin in NSMBWii that allowed new ways through the levels.) NSMB2 feels like an expansion pack. Reusing lots of previous stuff with some minor twists and new levels. You mention Super Mario Galaxy 2, and that was straight up an expansion on Super Mario Galaxy that grew so big they decided to make a new game out of it. We knew what it was going in. NSMB2 would've been nice to really progress the game play. (Gold Flower actually regresses the platforming gameplay as using it takes away platforms. :( )

I guess

Super Mario Bros. -> Super Mario Bros. 2/Lost Levels
as
Super Mario Galaxy -> Super Mario Galaxy 2
as
NSMB -> NSMB2

Are we predicting Nintendo Land to emulate the success of Wii Sports?

No.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
I think in all the work of localization of Witcher 2 to sell so few units, sad. Would have selled more units in Brazil than in Japan

Would've probably done a lot better had there been a PS3 release; Skyrim and Fallout and all those other big western RPGs have sold better on there (even with the Skyrim PS3 issues :p)

True, but how many years ago? :p
Persona 4 did 300k on PS2 in 2008, and while the brand is strong now, I see it a bit weaker than Hatsune Miku.

Miku as a brand might be much stronger, but as a game I don't think so. And not to mention, as a game we already know there's going to be a 'true' version of Diva f coming for PS3 next year. Character models on the Vita release leave a ton to be desired, and along w/ the high barrier to entry price-wise I can't see it doing nearly as well as previous releases.

So they wait this long to make a Bakemonogatari game? wat?

They waited even longer for the Madoka game (at least Bakemonogatari had season2 running this year).

Oh, and I probably should have mentioned this here as it's more a sales-age topic. As I posted on the DQX thread, Nikkei wrote a scathing article about how Dragon Quest X may be violating some gambling laws. Now what they're talking about here is utter horse shit as he's linking /random dice roll games for small amts of gold to RMT to gambling (might as well ban all MMOs in existence), but it triggered a response from stockholders who sold on the news, and that triggered a response from TV stations (though mostly business news sources it appears) citing the Nikkei article as the reason for the drop.

Facepalming to this chain of events aside, w/o understanding how incredibly stupid the original article was Joe Public could be fooled into thinking this game's pretty toxic, especially for Joe Jr. Between all the failed attempts to really taint DQ's image, this might actually do the trick. Will be interesting to see if we see a fallout in sales in the coming weeks as a result.

Yeah, LBX 3DS sold too well, haha. Media Create reported that one of the reasons Power Pros Baseball sold worse than last year's was due to the presence of an expanded release in 2011 after the original one. I have to wonder if that same strategy will also come to bite Level-5 in the ass with LBX. 3 releases of the same game in a single year is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, but if all three sold well probably there's still some potential. Not that the original release set th chart on fire.

The first release sold 350k, and would've done more if Level-5 didn't clip its' legs with the Boost announcement not even 6 months after release, lol.

But you don't pay for the gold to gamble in the DQ casinos. You pay for access to the service and then can farm as much gold as you want in the game (and use it how you want). Unless that's changed from past DQs?

I kind of feel they should have applied New to a different Mario subseries to make the change more obvious, or at least put in a lot more effort it making it seem immediately different.

With a new platform, people are often looking for an experience that seems fresh, and I think we saw the benefit Fire Emblem got from embracing that philosophy, while NSMB2 seems to be getting hit by not doing so.

Could the decrease be typical of the late summer season?

The game will definitely see a bump as territories (incl. JP) approach the holiday season. Seeing the game released in a dead season, I feel like its performing decent. August doesn't strike me as the time period where games will make up the bulk of their sales, even a super selling series like Mario. The series adopters are picking it up now, while many, many more will gravitate and request 3DS and NSMB2 as a holiday gift.

Just a generalization, not directed at you ^_^

Well, actually LBX on 3DS is selling well, and Gundam Age is produced by Namco Bandai.

I was kidding, Level 5 may have released a lot of bombs lately, but their main franchises still sell well, I'm sure they'll be fine.

I'm still baffled at how well their re-releases sell tbh, the numbers aren't crazy (aside from IE3:Ogre which sold way better than expected) but they're still selling way better than they should.
