Media Create Sales: Week 43, 2013 (Oct 21 - Oct 27)

Sorry about the hour delay...I completely forgot Daylight Savings Time ending, so I visited Comgnet an hour later than usual. :-(

It's all good Aqua. I wonder what this means for Wii Party U, should we be a bit more optimistic towards its debut, or what?

Well, on the one hand, it's fairly high up, but if you look at what is surrounding it and then look at the sales in the OP, they're not likely to be gigantic sellers next week.

That said, I'm not sure how well associated Comg is to the Wii Party U fanbase.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

If you compare it to Wii Party, I would say a standalone of around 50K looks about right. Again, that depends on comgnet being a decent indicator compared to when the original released.

I'm imagining somewhere between a 20K-60K debut.

It's kind of a large band, but it's hard for me to tell given that it's the Wii U and there is a bundle option.

For the people who aren't regulars in Media Create threads:

What is Tsutaya?
Tsutaya is a major retailer with 1,444 retail stores (613 that sell new games) all across Japan.

What is Comgnet?
Comgnet is the website for the retailer "COMG!" that has 16 retail stores across one prefecture in Japan.

Why post these rankings?
They are released three days before Media Create + Famitsu + Dengeki give us nationwide sales, so we get a general indication of how well the games will perform relative to their competition.

How accurate is Tsutaya compared to nationwide retail tracking services?
It's large enough that it gives a very probable indication of future sales rankings, but it's not large enough to be definitive.

Famitsu: ~3,600 stores
Media Create + Dengeki: >3,000 stores
Tsutaya: 613 stores
Comgnet: 16 stores

Aren't COMG and Tsutaya known to lean more towards certain kinds of games? I seem to recall mention of how one of them underrepresents games that sell to a casual audience because it's more of a specialty store.
(Not meant in response to Wii Party, just wondering why it isn't mentioned in Aquamarine's mini-FAQ if it's a thing.)

Saint Titanfall
Wii party isn't a front loaded game regardless. How well this game sells will ultimately depend on it's leg more than anything else.

Wii party isn't a front loaded game regardless. How well this game sells will ultimately depend on it's leg more than anything else.

I feel the week one sales are more interesting in the sense of seeing what kind of software current Wii U owners are actually responding to.

There are 1.1 million hardware units out there, but not much has a large attach rate.

Thats a pretty big jump in sales for blazblue, they probably have a handheld version in the works for next year if that release history is anything to go by

powerpro up from last year on all 3 skus, doubt it will have the same kind of legs on psp this time though so might not end up that much better in eventual ltds

Apparently it was heavily heavily promoted in japan...so if this doesn't do well and the Wii version was a suoerseller then their no hope

Yeah, Wii Party standalone is sort of interesting, just to see how much of an audience there is left there compared to the 220K that bought the game first week on the much larger Wii installed base.

But Wii Party bundle is really the more important metric this week for the Wii U.

At this point I don't think that matters anymore. Those 1 million units are more or less dead weight. I reckon a huge portion of people who own a WiiU and still game regularly have other platforms where they are actually buying and playing games for. There are a million Xbox360s out there too, but nothing really sells on it either.

What would be interesting is to see whether there is a significant number of people who do not own a WiiU wanting to buy into with Nintendo's year end "initiatives" like the bundles and major games. It the answer is no, then nothing will change and the system is dead. If the answer is yes, then there is at least a chance that those who still own a WiiU would also be influenced by a revived public interest in the system and start buying games on it again too.

So is it reasonable to expect 50-60k Wii Parteeey then?

I wonder how much of that is bundles, and if that means Wii U will reach into the 50k area as well.

Not too shabby for a title such as this, all things considered.

That's part of why I find it interesting though.

If no one is buying software then the existing install base is worthless to publishers, and perhaps even Nintendo. If the owners at least buy something, it's a sign there isn't total comatose.

The system seeming dead wouldn't be a shocking outcome, but the results will at least help solidify things in one way or another.

Those preorder ratings are kinda meh. They are showing Wii Party U below Powerfull Pro PS3 version which will score around 20-30k this week and it would be weird if it didn't reach 30k first week.

I think we need the digital numbers to make an accurtate statement about this. I am going (almost) full digital this time and by our current measurements gaf would think i haven´t bought a single game.

I'm more interested in what legs Wii U Party shows (or lack thereof) than the FW sales. I know it was a different market back then but Wii Party had massive legs.

Probably more accurate to compare it with recent WiiU titles. WW HD reached 30k with less pts for example, but we'll know in a couple of days.

Bought my Wii U at Yodobashi today.

Like the Bic Camera near my work, they weren't advertising at all the Wii Fit bundle, only the one with two games.

I asked at the counter, and apparently they had tons in the back, so I got a white one with the three games.

They definitely weren't going to sell out, but I noticed a lot more interest in the Wii U than I ever had before.

(I was going to buy another game with it, but I figured I prob won't have much time to play my Wii U as is it, and will wait for next month)

If it doesn't sell much the first week, I wouldn't expect much afterwards.

I think we need the digital numbers to make an accurtate statement about this. I am going (almost) full digital this time and by our current measurements gaf would think i haven´t bought a single game.
Digital takes its part, for sure, but theres no way to tell how much it gets and Nintendo offer almost no incentives to buy on the eshop. Unless Nintendo someday show its numbers, its a guess game and its better if we dont go there. If we did, every game that bombs would have the excuse of being digital also.

I guess that what some other people said, that digital is normally 10% of retail, is a good margin. Of course when you sell pretty bad like Rayman, that percentage may go up, but for normal titles, its an okay estimate. Even though we have some discrepancies, like zelda selling more digital than wario, despite wario selling much more on retail, the same goes for pikmin and nintendoland.

If it doesn't sell much the first week, I wouldn't expect much afterwards.
I dont expect to see the game on the charts for much time, but these kind of games were never frontloaded. Unless Wiiu strikes again, we will see it for a little while.

I already listed some digital numbers last week. Add Monster Hunter 4 numbers as being known to that list.

And the buy two get one free promotion is an amazing incentive.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
We're just 16 days away of 3D World's release, but the game's still out of Comgnet store chain's top 20. How bad is that?

[WII] Super Mario Galaxy - 64pt
[WII] Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 95pt
[3DS] Super Mario 3D Land - 94pt
[3DS] Kid Icarus: Uprising - between 24pt and 31pt
[3DS] Luigi's Mansion 2 - 69pt
[WIIU] Pikmin 3 - 33pt
[WIIU] Super Mario 3D World - 20pt / less than 20pt

RIP WiiU 2013 holiday sales. I had no idea 3D world would be the title to disappoint us in sales. That was the one title I would bet on having great sales.

Not going to panic just yet, but that is certainly very worrying.

I imagine if it fails to perform, the blame will be put on 3D Land, sorta of how NSMB 2 was blamed for NSMB U lack of ability to carry the Wii U to at least respectable numbers.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

That doesn't really work though as it was the close proximity in time that was blamed (and rightfully so) while theres been plenty of gap between Land and World.

I'm finding it pretty bizarre that this is the game thats disappointing. Has the WiiU situation become so terminal that people have either traded the box away into secondhand that we presumably don't track, or just... boxed it up into a cupboard? I mean this is a Mario game in Japan! And its multiplayer with more NewSMB sensibilities!

I think the drought and general pessimism has resulted in many people just giving up on the system despite already owning one. Like 360, even though it has a userbase of 1 million many of those consoles haven't had a new game put in them for years. I feel its the same for WiiU where despite the user base being 1 million, the amount of active users who are willing to buy games for the system is far less.

Don't get me wrong, all consoles have the same problem, but the WiiU might have a larger ratio and coupled with its low user base its a real problem for software.

Agree that the excuse would not work, no excuse would really work if it under performs, its Mario + holidays + price drop + bundles. This title, more than any other, is suppose to be the resurrection spell being cast on the Wii U, i very much do not believe it will be that at all. And if does not happen now, then it probably never will happen, i am sure we will see "wait for Mario Kart" and "wait for Smash" though. A lot is riding on this game.

Its poised to become the worst selling 3D Mario of all time, the surprise would be if is actually *not* the worst selling 3D Mario of all time.

Doesn't Comgnet just measure pre-orders?

Perhaps people have got used to the low sellthrough and feel no need to pre-order the game? There's no way it will sell poorly, unless every Wii U owner in Japan has traded in their console.

This is the fallacy that every Japanese WiiU consumer is as switched on as 2channers and NeoGaffers and aware of such things as sellthrough rates :p

We'll see how this plays out, but right now its looking really bad. Bizarrely so, honestly.

You guys are being honestly serious? I mean, i don't think the title will do gangbuster and Comgnet might be an indicative, but to call domm and gloom based on it is a little too much. We've already saw titles with bad preorders perform very well and titles with very good preorders to perform bad. Comgnet only works to gather a little of interest, but it's not better than amazon in that regard.

Also, i saw that Yahoo japan shows a little more about software sales regarding famitsu numbers (they show top 10 for every platform, interesting imo), but their numbers are one week late, which is a bummer. But if anyone wants to know what is the top 10 for every platform, you can check it out.

If this title doesn't do gangbusters then it basically is doom and gloom for the prospects that still remain for the Wii U. You can really stick a fork in it if this flops out of the gate.

I totally agree with that felling, what i don't agree is that the title will surely do bad because of low preorders on comgnet.

Look I'm not a big fan of the doom & gloom either but Wii U is fucked in my book if SM3DW doesn't push the hardware sales and sells a bunch itself

3D Land had crazy legs and sold gangbusters - I can't see why SM3DW should have less appeal than that

I have a Wii U, and I like it.
meanwhile, it is obvious that the doom&gloom about the Wii U is not exxagerated.
I will be surprised if even Nintendo will still support it in 2015 (unless delaying X and Yoshi or Fire Emblem to that date is called support)
