Speaking of Micheal Mann, I finally watched the new Definitive cut of The Last of the Mohican on blu-ray the other day.

Its pretty much the ideal cut I think. Mann restores a lot of what people complained was missing in the directors cut, while removing some of the more superfluous additions. At 115 minutes, the runtime is smack dab between the original theatrical cut, and the old director's cut.

Great movie as always though.

Yeah it's a good version of the film. Not too obtrusively changed (does this term even work?) like Miami Vice was.

Damn I love that ending track.

Never saw the theatrical cut of Miami Vice, so Im not down on the changes. I love the opening, it sets the mood, and it looks way too good on blu-ray.

Who knows if Id think differently if Id seen the TC first (still havent), but whatever.

Crowe haters can kiss my ass

Insider and Master & Commander alone deify him imo

Nah, Crowe is a good actor, but I know a few people that have worked on set with the man that will tell you he's a completely self-absorbed piece of shit in real life. That's not even mentioning that story about him and the Australian journalist who had to endure the crazy bastard.

Edit: Here you go.

AHAHAHA. Oh man that story is ridiculous. I swear I could only see somebody like Tom Cruise and now Russell Crowe doing something that crazy.

I am excited for this. Yay. I need to buy an import Love Exposure. Did Love Exposure ever get a all region Blu-Ray from anywhere?

Can't remember when I made my last post so just random short stuff
It Happened One Night (1934) - Really great. Leads have great chemistry, the characters are all very believable, and it's quite funny.
Out of the Past (1947) - Might need to revisit this because it was hard to watch with how tired I was at the time. Uses of deep focus and low-key lighting were cool
Love and Other Drugs (2010) - Pretty boring, not offensively bad like No Strings Attached though. Hathaway...goddamn
Requiem for a Dream (2000) - Really cool and really depressing. Not my favorite Aronofsky though. I'd say he got better with every film with the exception of Wrestler to Black Swan. Love BS, but Wrestler's my favorite

No. I've looked.

Just saw 'The Wrestler' for the second time via Netflix. First time I saw it was in the theater. I cried my fucking eyes out the first time I saw it and I'm trying to hold mine the second time (saw it in bits this time cause I know I can't handle it and silly me HAD to see the ending) but I hear my brother clearing his nose so one of us has to man the fuck up and It'll be me this time.

Can't wait to see it myself. BTW if you already didn't know Sono is already working on a new movie called Guilty of Romance. Should be gory detective story.

Paranoid Park (Van Sant, 2007):
I really liked the cinematography, not so much the story.
I mean, the subject was interesting, but it didn't really catch me, the actors felt fake (maybe because they were very young or maybe i'm just wrong) and in general, i didn't really get what they were going for.
I gotta say, as far as the script and performances goes, i liked Afterschool much much better(on a similar subject).
Though, as i said, the photography and direction, i really liked those, the soundtrack too.
Maybe i miss something, since it's a very praised film, so i'll give it another shot, one of these days.

It was like a page ago, but Days of Heaven doesn't have shitty ADR. Just sayin'.

And Discotheque, I won't argue with whether or not you found the girl's voice annoying, but the monologues are great pieces of writing.

Yeah sure the actual narration was good. And I get they wanted it in the perspective of the girl, but damn...hire another actress or something. That was grating.

Mr Brooks - Check it out if you like movies like american psycho

Red (2008) - Check it out if you like Dogs and Revenge and justice

Red (2010) - Check it out if you like over the top stuff like "Shoot em up"

and thats the only movies i have watched in the last few days.

Heat can fuck right off, this is Michael Mann's best. Great film, excellent work from Pacino, Crowe, and Plummer. Really loved this one.

this is also my favourite mann film.

This thread has turned me on to so many good movies. And im not particularly easy to please in this department.

In the past week ive watched Carriers, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Its Kind of a Funny Story, Eastern Promises, Never Let Me Go, Jack Goes Boating, Blue Valentine, City of God, The Fountain, Dragon Tattoo Trilogy, and even the silly but thoroughly enjoyable Trick 'r Treat.

Next up are Animal Kingdom, Love Exposure, The Ghost Writer, Afterschool, What's Up Tiger Lily, Sunset Blvd, Lilja 4 Ever, and many more im sure.

These are all movies id never heard of until reading their recommendations here. Ive enjoyed every single movie from this thread so far.

So thanks for keeping this thread up and having good taste, GAF!

EDIT - In the spirit of the thread, ill throw a recommendation out that i hope hasnt already been mentioned:

Code 46 starring Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton. Brilliant film, one of my favorites. The less you know about it before watching the more rewarding your viewing will be.

yea, its pretty wild. got to see it last year at fantastic fest. good stuff

Winter's Bone: Like this a lot. It's set in the Ozarks but could have easily been set in Appalachia. The performances were fine except accents seem to vary. That may be a regional thing though.

The Town: I liked this one too, but it's no Gone Baby Gone and is much more formulaic. Renner is going to keep coasting on his nominations as his acting does not stand out to me. I blame his shw The Unusuals which has him talking the same way so he seems one note to me.

Yesterday I saw Donnie Yen's "14 Blades" and it was good. Im recommending it to all fans of great action wuxia scenes [there is very little wire-fu here]

I know I'm lttp, but I was soooo bored watching this movie tonight. 3/10. I really like Bodyguards and Assassins, I'd definitely recommend that. 8.2/10 Also, not Donnie Yen age but Reign of Assassins was surprisingly enjoyable. 8/10.

Coinky-dink, I just watched this myself a few days ago for the first time. I'm a pretty big Aronofsky fan myself, and I'll agree it wasn't his best work even though I really dug it.

However, it was definitely some of Clint Mansell's best work. Lux Aeterna sits next to Death Is The Road To Awe for me.

Suspiria
I am not a fan of most horror flicks but damn this was good. The way the score keep the tension building. The use of colors...damn.

Be sure to watch the sequel, INFERNO. You can skip the third one, though. Sighs.

DEEP RED is regarded by many as Argento's best, though I am partial to TENEBRE.

watched true grit

havent seen the original and i havent like much of most coen brothers movies ive seen

but i really really liked this, particularly the dialogue

Gullivers' Travels, or whatever this piece of gawker is called in english anyway. What a load of horsegawker. Do not watch.

Buried

Tension filled thriller, for 90 minutes spent in a coffin with one main actor it's a good film.

8/10
Haven't seen the film yet, but i always read this thing, so i'm bound to ask: good movie or good achievement?
In other words, it's a good movie overall, or it's good because it has little elements to play with and it does a decent job, given the premise?

Army Of Shadows: Totally owned. When they did that thing to that guy I was like holy shit!
Shock Corridor: Nymphos.
The Diving Bell And The Butterfly: Less devastating than I thought it was going to be, still excellent.
Fish Tank: Good not great. I like most movies about poor Brits and Scots though, for some reason.
All About Eve: It was cute and clever but if I wanted to spend two and half hours with psycho ass bitches I'd start dating again.

Saw Iron Man 2.

It was better than I expected which isn't saying much since I expected the worst.

It seemed for some reason to be devoid of Iron Man awesomeness. I will say for an overstuffed movie, they handled overstuff better than most.

Downey stole the show and Cheadle seems like a better fit than Howard.

EDIT: Forgot to add that the IM franchise is incapable of making a final bad guy battle

Both.

Benny Gordy's The Last Dragon (1985): This movie is so cheesy, but that is why I love it. It's basically a long 80s music video fused with martial arts scenes. 8/10

Devil Really enjoyed this. Having hated everything M night has ever done except Unbreakable i was hesitant. But other than a little bad acting and a few cheesy lines it was pretty awesome.

Green Hornet Kato was so awesome, the effects were cool and the gadgets were cool. Good action movie

The King's Speech: I was hesitant to watch this movie, since I thought the subject matter would bore me to tears, but after all the accolades it has gotten, I figured it was time. Lo and behold, the movie was actually pretty damn good! The acting was overall really good, and both Firth and Rush knocked it out of the park. The dialogue between them was excellent, and the overall production values were impressive. If I have to complain about anything, it's the direction. Some parts felt entirely overdone with the odd camera angles and the bug-like field of view. But still, an inspirational story that actually made you genuinely root for its "protagonist". Good stuff!

Rango, 7/10. Seeing how the ads keep saying "not just for kids!" and go as far as showing live-action Depp, it's sort of surprising that the vast majority of the kiddie elements come solely from Depp. Thankfully he's not silly 100% of the time though. Visually the movie is awesome, great art direction, character design, etc. Roger Deakins is a visual consultant on the movie so you know it'll be eye candy. Some awesome action in there, too. Plot is paint-by-numbers, though, and gets tiring towards the end, but it gets saved by... something awesome that I dare not spoil.

Nice to see something so unique (outside of plot) in a year crowded with stuff like Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots, etc.

Never Let Me Go.

Absolutely loved it. Equally dark as it is beautiful. Wonderfully shot. All of the performances are great, but Carey Mulligan steals it for me. Between this an An Education, she's really starting to grab my attention.

Caught a matinee showing of Unknown (2011) earlier today. Really solid conspiracy/action/thriller. All of the acting was done well, everyone was believable. People will want to compare this to Taken, Liam Neeson's last foray into a leading role of an action movie, but it's almost apples to oranges. Unknown has nowhere near as much action and a much deeper and ultimately satisfying story. Only part I didn't like was the final scene which was botched pretty badly, although it doesn't really take away from the movie at all. Before I saw it I just hoped it would be a decent entertaining action flick, and it ended up pleasantly surprising me. 7.5/10

after life
ワンダフルライフ

there is some remarkably profound and unexpected insight here; brief moments of quiet poignancy, so subtle and fleeting, you might miss them if you didn't pay close attention. they are subdued almost to a fault, but so concise and rewarding, that they nevertheless transcend an otherwise slowly paced and restrained picture. koreeda doesn't always find the right tone or approach to his ideas and the movie comes to a halt a few times too many. it also borders on overstaying its welcome. but it's the rare movie that survives on its frequently unrealized potential, as it still shines through in its clearest and most unique moments, just often enough and with such subtle but piercing intensity that you momentarily forgive its shortcomings. these extraordinary scenes frequently tended to cast not only the movie's somewhat duller passages in a different light but also my own immediate and initially negative reaction to them - if that makes sense.

as a side note: this has been my fourth koreeda movie. i'd still rank nobody knows as his best, this, tied with maborosi, as my second favorite and the more recent still walking as my least favorite of the bunch.
