Yep, stand in a dark room and hold a flashlight up to the side.voltron said:But how will i know without opening it and voiding the warranty? Believe id love to know the answer to that myself... maybe because they will have opened it on repair they wont be able to tell if I open it again myself.
So do you get red lights? If not, they can't be too far off. Maybe keep playing it a bit until it gives them.ToyMachine228 said:On the phone with Microsoft support now...They're so dumb.
I'm not sure and it's only based on my personal theories but heating and cooling rapidly should help due to the movement that's involved. Heat it up to normal temperature and turn it off. Play in an airconditioned room if possible or any cold area. If it's winter where you are unplug it and put it on the back doorstep immediately after turning it off. Never return to the dashboard after playing because it lets the GPU cool slower. Lots of on-off cycles should cause the crap solder joints to move sufficiently to break them.alr1ghtstart said:is there any way to speed this process up (getting the red lights)? Me: Games freeze when I run them on my console and I occassionally get the red rings of death.
What game freezes?
All of them.
Wait, what game?
All of them.
Oh ok how many? I don't know like ten.
Ok well we can repair your system but it's going to cost you $99.99.
Wait, don't 360's have a 3 year warranty?
But that's only for red lights.
I have the red lights.
I thought your games freeze?
They do, but I also get red lights. Ok...Let me check my reference...
20 minutes on hold...
Ok Ryan you can send it in and if they diagnose that it has red lights it's free, if it just freezes then you have to pay $99.
Pretty retarded. So if when they turn it on it doesn't have red lights then I'm paying? **** that. It was made December 4th, 2005. Don't the 2005 consoles have a life time warranty?
And the guy's english sucks. Sounded like he was reading a cue card.

WickedLaharl said:wow, so the warranty extension is bullshit if they're going to hassle you like that. when my console died i would only get the rlod half the time when i powered it on. i finally got it to a redring all the time by booting to the dash and waiting for the checkboard pattern to show up. then i turned it off/on again for god knows how long. i have no idea why i did this cause i'm under warranty, guess i was hoping it would resurrect it self. :<
MercuryLS said:MS is building up a lot of bad Karma over this. They are so ****ing inept, I can't believe they've gone almost 2 years without adressing this issue. And no, a $1.5bil bandaid isn't really a fix.
So I tracked down my console, its STILL at the repair shop. Its been there for 2 weeks now ( a VERY long time if you have to send to the one in Canada, I know im a vet at this)
So Im on the phone, after talking to one person and spending 25 min on hold (oh I loved that) I was able to speak with a 'hardware guy'. He told me the broken DVD drive had been fixed and they were 'holding it to do preventive maintenance' on it.
He couldnt tell me anything further however, what do you guys think? I know they are adding extra heat sinks and poxy, but could they be swapping out the old mobo for the 65nm one? I think that is how they repair them anyways is by simply swapping out the entire mobo and replacing it, as it would be the most cost effective way rather then have a tech do trouble shooting then sodering and then running tests etc.
If I was to garner a guess I would say they are doing that.

That will teach me. At least I got the Wii and the Triple so I can work my backlog on other platforms, but anyway, my second console. Great.
Thank god for the extender warranty.

B_Rik_Schitthaus said:I just got my 360 back after 5 weeks due to the three flashing red lights (indicated a general hardware fault). Unlike last time I get a sheet of paper giving me a general idea of what the fault was in this case it was the DVD drive which they have replaced (I think).
My question is because the machine was sent in for repair due to the three flashing red lights am I going to have the £86 I had to pay refunded as was stated in the open letter and new retroavtive warrenty?

Six Reasons The Xbox 360 Is in Trouble:
1. It's unreliable.
As Microsoft finally acknowledged this month, Xbox 360s fail more often than the company "is comfortable with." Some reports pin the "Red Ring of Death" failure rates as high as 33%. As a result, Microsoft increased the system's warranty from one to three years at a sizable and appreciated expense, but the company's unwillingness to fully disclose what's causing the problem undermines the solution. Gamers don't want to risk $300-400 at the chance to play games on 360, they want to make sure it can and will play games for years to come. Pile on the recent class-action lawsuits claiming that the machine scratches discs at random, and it becomes clear that the Xbox 360 isn't nearly as dependable as it could be.

We have to call them to get our XBLA games back? And what else? I need to be compensated for Live time, too.

I really hope it's not that long for me. I play every other night or so and it's just now clicking that I have a worthless box under the TV. I actually forgot about it and came up to play just now. :lolvoltron said:Man that sux.... I gues for you Americans getting the red ring has more weight to it as youll be forced to go consoleless for so much longer due to the back log. As I mentioned earlier Im in Australia and it looks like the turn around for sending it in and receiving it back will be exactly 7 days.
When I first glanced over your post I thought you were talking about a second console like the Wii or PS3. :lolGhaleonEB said:I really hope it's not that long for me. I play every other night or so and it's just now clicking that I have a worthless box under the TV.
