The levels feel very PS2 era-y. I enjoyed that so much.

Yeah. As in designed.

Not a nebulous open world with random shit "to do" populated in it like so many big budget games today. See the most recent Ghost Recon beta thread.

In a lot of ways I get MegaMan vibes. Choose your mission, cap-ended with a boss.

Speaking of the Muneshige battle, I've been slowly going through this game thinking it was alright, but the back to back boss battle and side misison fighting him hooked me completely, and now this game is all I can think about. The side mission in particular was great, trying to bait him into spamming his BS and getting hits where you can made it feel like a really cool duel. The boss battle music in the main mission was A+. I got to the
Giant Centipede
earlier and even though I'm not a fan of the level's gimmick, I'm positive the game will turn it around and give me something I love next. Overall, great stuff.

In my opinion, the best levels and missions are all ahead of you.

Finally got the blacksmithing trophy, put on a podcast and grinded that old charm mission on NG+ for a couple of hours. Now just to wait for the right twilight mission to come round and that's the platinum sorted.

I'm on the last map and just kind of want to get to NG+/Way of the Strong for the Divine gear.

If I skip a side mission, can I still complete it after the main missions are over?

Thanks.

~80 hours later, just 1 or 2 twilight missions from platinum. What an awesome game!

I started off with axe until the 3rd region. I really liked the amount of KI damage they do, and enjoyed timing my swings correctly. Then I switched to sword for 4th region because I just couldn't beat one of the bosses with the slow ass axe. Finally discovered our lord and savior Dual swords by the 5th region and haven't looked back! Holy shit that square -> triangle -> timed triangle combo is so good! The feel and fluidity of the dual swords is just great too, frekin love them. Combine that with fire amulets from omyo magic and power pills, I was unstoppable!

My final divine build ended up being the full masterful swordsman set. Kinda wanted to get a set for axe but I think after I get the platinum I'm done for now. I'd keep playing, but with Horizon / Zelda coming up, aint got time for that.

So I'm level 94 and I looked to see how much game I have left today, I'm at the
Defiled Holy Mountain
. It appears I'm severely under leveled? Recommended is 115? I'm not sure If I'm just a badass at this game or if those are a little high. Either way, I can't seem to get enough Amrita to level that quickly.

Am I badass?

It should be thanks, kodama and other ideas are bad.

Feel free to change it from whatever nonsensical title OP decides to choose.

Once you hit region 4/5 you start being under-levelled compared to the mission level, but it means nothing really. What you should be looking at is the amount of red swords(1-5) which will tell you the general difficulty based on your current armour/weapons/skills etc.

I noticed that the levels for the missions start scaling higher than your actual level, but should be matching with the level of gear you're wearing. Is your gear around 115? I think I beat the final mission with most of my gear at lvl 85.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm level 72.

Interesting, I'm not sure, I'll have to check.

I'm not very good with all the other systems in this game. I have about 24 samurai points, 32 ninjitsu points, 25 Omyno points left. I just don't really know what to get other than the passives. I'm pretty vanilla and boring too, I just use the Katana in both slots. I have a water damage one and a fire damage one. I basically find myself really good at dodging/attack behind them, get out. I figured on NG+, I'll slow down and take time to learn the other weapons etc. I legit just figured out how Soul Matching works, embarrassed to admit. I just break down all the weapons and sell the stuff. I should probably be forging and trying for better stuff, I just don't really know what to focus on. I mainly just level Body, Skill, Heart, Spirit.

Hmm, they're all lvl 5 red swords.

Apparently we're bad asses.

So...a friend of mine is just starting out on the Isle, and he's struggling. At that early in the game, is there a way I can be summoned to help him out?

This game was half decent until Tachibana Muneshige Side Mission. Lol. I am sure I'll reap half a dozen "lol so easy", "Haha just learn to dodge" or whatever, but in your heart of hearts you know this thing is just completely broken.
I don't think I've seen as cheap a spamming boss in any game yet.

Edit: In order to not clutter up the thread, and this probably being already discussed before in some way, I'll just leave it as an afterthought.

I am sure you can be more broken, I believe it is also possible to spam Iai ad nauseum, but my complaint was more the spam and less him being impossible - just cheap. I.e. this guy feels similar to the Crow guy in BB and I am just not fond of that kind of design where you fight for a relatively long peroid of time and not allowing for a single error - but pressured to do exactly that because of the incoming barrage (in relative comparison of course, obviously to a degree this is always the case in an action game).

I'll start by saying I am terrible at hard games. I've watched YouTube vids of each boss fight in advance and still lose like 25-40 times before beating them. Here's some tips for this boss from an awful player :)

-use the sword
-light armor only! Seriously. Quick dodging is key.
-use block, L1. Before this boss, I never ever blocked. If you find yourself still getting hit after dodging just hold onto L1 then run like heck away when he stops to restore your Ki.
-stay a mid distance, dash in, smack him once, then dodge back. Only once! Repeat this.
-As he winds up again to hit you, OR, walks slowly toward you, same thing as before, dash in, smack him once, step back.
-when he does that sword spin thing, dash in and slash him. It will disrupt the move.
-if you start to get a rhythm for his patterns, try to sneak in 2 hits, and a third hit with a kick, the kick stuns him.
---if he's stunned i.e. Has red Ki bar, use your special tech like the stab forward with triangle.
-run figure 8's around the pillars if you need to readjust your rhythm or heal
-add fire to your sword (keep the amulet shortcut)

It's pretty normal. In the first two or three region most people will be 'overleveled', but it starts to balance starting the fourth region. From region 5 onwards, most will be 'underleveled'. But worry not, those level on missions are not actually level requirements. Most would beat the game around level 100-110, and the last region is 120+.

Fuck Okatsu is difficult as an axe user... she's so fast....

:(

I don't think I can do this guys :(

I'm trying to beat this game before Zelda on Thursday...
And I'm just getting burnt out :(

EDIT: FUCK YEAH, I DID IT!!!!!!!!!

Finished the game.

I pretty much enjoyed it all the way.
I especially enjoyed the last 2 missions.

I guess it's time to get that "way of the strong" run in a couple of days.

This game is quite addictive and so fun.

Tachibana doesn't spam at all and he's certainly not anywhere near as belligerent (read: without clear-cut openings / weaknesses) as the Bloodborne hunter you're referring to. He's vulnerable after his sheathe strikes, most of his standard melee attacks can be readily parried, he generally wastes a lot of stamina and there's numerous moments where his manoeuvres either have relatively long wind-up or recovery periods. He's flatout not in any kind of ball park to objectively be considered cheap. You're also underestimating how much leeway is given to players to overcome any challenge in Nioh with flying colors regardless of their dexterity in fast-paced action games, so fighting him flawlessly is not a necessity either.

Second OT should drive the diabloness home. I'm still annoyed how surface level the souls connections are.
They're less skin deep than the Diablo similarities.

This boss was blocking a lot of your attacks. So landing one hit mid-stance is not as good as landing one hit with high stance. High stance does both more health damage and Ki damage. Even if he blocks high stance attacks, the ki damage to him would be significant. Allowing you to 'break' him thus going for a grapple. Also, utilize the Katana (L1+/\) move. It does heavy enemy ki damage. Allowing you to grapple the opponent.
I think I cared more about mobility when I was fighting it so I just stuck to mid stance. Maybe at some point I'll try it with high stance, but I find high stance movement and overall dodging too slow for my taste.

Thing is you don't need to gimp your movement at all. Just swap to high stance for the attack and swap to low stance for the dodge. During the high stance attack animation you can swap stances to low for the quick dodging.

Ideally you should practice switching stances on the fly, high stance attack, switch to low to escape.

I understand it's an extra layer of complexity and I feel the same way at first. But if you start some simple combos and practice it on the regular enemies eventually it becomes normal.

Yes I'm sure Amrita and Shrines are far deeper similarities than basically the whole of Nioh endgame. /s
Even the lead up to it never felt very Souls like to me when you basically break the game with certain character builds.
As someone that platted all the souls titles and spend far more time in Nioh beyond its own platinum Nioh to me is more Diablo than Souls.
From what I'm actually doing gameplay wise to the whole mentality of behind the progression systems.... well can't say I agree at all with the shallow analysis and assessment that it's sooooooooo Souls like. Basically the major difference between the two for me is how I engage in these games mentally especially endgame wise.

Souls I explore and conquer.
Nioh/Diablo I theorycraft and farm for progression.

There are times when I do try to do this and whenever I go low stance I just end up dashing to or from the target, it gets quite annoying.

There's multiple components in addition to the aforementioned two which are directly influenced by Souls games - albeit with varying degrees of tweaks to help set Nioh apart from the competition - whereas the Diablo similarities are loot and only loot. A comparatively rudimentary take on the system, at that.

For someone who uses "I plat'd all the Souls games!" as an argument, you're not being particularly astute concerning basic game design observations and it's not even a topic that's up for debate when the developers themselves repeatedly mentioned Souls games as a primary inspiration.

How does co-op work? I thought the golden arch symbol was to show co-op is possible. Wanted to help people with guardian of the underworld mission in world 2 but I can't request to help..

Yeah, I've come across really nobody that said the level design is poor. I believe it's fantastic.

I think some people may be disappointed that the level system isn't open world and connected though...but that's just how the game is structured.

There are some weaker ones. I have an ass sense of direction, so anything maze like sucks for me. Rotating compass is useless.

I don't know how you can say the Diablo connections are just loot because that's an incredibly surface level assessment especially when I already talk about the character progression systems and hinting at the build variety made possible through items when I talk about theorycrafting. You're basically not even engaging in anything I said. Also I don't use the platted all the Souls game as an argument. I said it to give context to what my experience is based on.

I can play Nioh for 20 hours and definitely go away thinking it's somewhat Souls like. But after playing the game for over a 100 hours and basically doing almost everything I can in it there is just no dispute to the things I'm actually doing in the game and how I engage in it are closer in nature to playing a Diablo game than a Souls game.

As for the devs statement how what I'm saying conflicts with that in any way. I never said that there are no connections to Souls there obviously are.
All I'm saying is that the game core nature is closer to Diablo than Souls and I think that's pretty fair to be honest.

I have the impression the number of red symbols (swords?) underneath the level indicator is a much better representation of how hard the mission will be than the actual level.

That's because the number of red symbols is determined by your average equipment level. If you unequip all your gear (including accessories), pretty much everything is 5 of the red symbols.
