No Man's Sky - Atlas Rises |OT| Nada, Polo and you no longer fly solo

So upgrading slots is bugged? I haven't tried but I see it mentioned here (though my memory may be off as to what is bugged but I know it has something to do with slots).

Yeah it is, there's a fix for that and a bunch of other stuff on the Steam experimental branch that was put up today. If that goes well expect it to hit release/PS4 either tomorrow or Friday.

It's a shame the features you see on a planet from far away have no connection to what's actually on the planet. Looks great, but seems like it's just a generic texture until you get pretty close and the actual procedural generation kicks in and everything changes. Kiiiind of shatters the illusion a bit. Would be so cool if those lines and stuff you see from afar were actual valleys on the planet, etc, so you could pick a landing site from way out in space and actually see it grow larger and more detailed all the way down. But I realize what a technical challenge that would be.

The update 1.31?

That came out the other day. This would be 1.32.

I am hoping the patch resolves the problem exosuit upgrades in older saves. Basically, I have 48 slots already because I granded back around launch time. However, the Drop Pods don't allow me to power my other sections now.

Okay. I can't find this experimental branch, its not under properties..how do you update to it?

At least it's a lot better than it used to be. At launch planets could sometimes look totally different colours in space than they actually were.

Yeah, for sure. There's just that last bit missing to make it feel fully seamless and... real I guess. Like the planet you see from space is actually the one you land on.

It's just not ready yet. The experimental branches are not publicly available, we just saw someone posts the notes from it. Expect a push to the main branch within a few hours I'd say.

While this would be incredible, my instinct is that even if solving the technical hurdle to make it feasible, it might impact performance too much to make it worthwhile. But at least the distance at which the "real" geometry first becomes visible can be improved in theory (also performance intensive of course)

Shhh, no logic here. Only nigh-impossible suggestions! :p

I've got Sonic Mania waiting for me, but I just can't get over my unhealthy obsession for NMS... It's so damn good.

It's still got some quirks, but mods have addressed the majority of them for me thankfully.

I feel you, I don't know what it is about this game, but it captures my attention so fully whenever I go on a kick of playing it. Like I acknowledge there's a lot wrong with it, but the limitless potential for exploration and cool things they could add keep me coming back for more.

You can get it by using this access code 3xperimental

It's actually pretty wild how fast this thread is going, for a year-old game OR a new one.

The Lawbreakers OT is on page 13. (No shade at that game whatsoever, I'm just saying). edit: eep in particular no shade at Trance

Definitely scan eeeverything for secondary resources, even the basic resource flowers and crystals. Medium red crystals on this planet give me bonus thamium-9, and there's titanium with emeril (not that I have an advanced mining laser yet).

Also, does anyone when mining rocks get them down to a tiny sliver and them melee them once to make them explode? No one? Yeah me neither.

Right click the game in your steam library, then choose properties, betas. Put 3xperimental in the code box and check it. Select the beta branch.

Use at own risk etc.

Oh wow. I think i'll still hold off just in case. Usually they get pushed relatively soon.

So I can not find a targeting button on when I am flying (PS4) and I am trying to find a downed ship to replace my current one. Any suggestions with that? or how do I see a transmission tower flying around? (what do I look for)

So my base is really beginning to get on my nerves. The damn thing is floating and has been for a few days but I'm just kind of sick of it's existence now. Is there a way to delete it?

Also curious for those who've done the new story, I'm at the bit where
I upload or don't upload the guy to server more or less, did go to another portal and get some data and have been sent back and forth to the holo thingies. How far am I to the end? Honestly getting rather tired of the busy body stuff at this point and just want to end it.

Unfortunately I think my jumping off point will come after that. Floating bases drew all interest in that out for me and while I'd like to upgrade my stuff, get a better ship and maybe a freighter it all seems so grindy and there's not much appeal to actually have this stuff IMO. I remember getting the Tau jump drive before only to find the star systems I was locked out of are largely the same as any other and don't expect that to have changed drastically.

You're about 3/4 done with the story, and imo it gets more interesting from here on out.

Sucks about your base, but I also wouldn't jump ship too fast on the warp drives. I think the new biomes are tuned to spawn much more frequently in differently colored star systems, so it might be worth checking some out if you haven't seen them yet, as they are truly incredible imo.

It's left and right on the d-pad, but you have to be in range of one.

Transmission towers look like giant red beams of light... if they still exist.

Also just realized that signal scanners can scan for monoliths rather than outposts. Updating the tips post- that's potentially quite useful. Though I think there are no concrete ways to scan for outposts anymore, they can be spotted fairly easily when cruising in-atmo.

I think on Normal mode there is a slim chance your starter planet will be a nice "Paradise" planet. It's rare though.

On Survival mode it's always a hazardous planet to start.

Also, planets in your first system don't have storms. At least I have never gotten the "Weather Alert, incoming storm" message in the first system.(both normal and Survival)

Extreme planets are usually encountered sooner though on Survival.

Yes your starter planet can be a paradise if your lucky.

My starter planet have perfect weather, dont even have any kinds of storms, sentinels are neutral and all animals are friendly. I can just afk outside that is the same to afk inside a building in this planet. Im also building my base here.

Thanks for the replies :)
HNNG, now I'm temped to keep trying until I get a nice starter planet, but the snowy one from yesterday looked pretty cool.

I don't think transmission towers have giant beams of light anymore. You have to find them randomly or when you "ask for directions"

Anybody know what the new Atlas path is? I followed it so far and always crafted the new item, but now it's asking for stuff I need a new warp drive for. Is there anything worthwile at the end of the quest?

It's not often I say this, but NMS is honestly made for VR.

I can see that being the case, but the current hardware isn't really meant for it. At least not on the PlayStation 4. If they do introduce a VR mode it would have to be PC-only, and considering that's only half of the user base it's probably a lower priority for them. Sean talked briefly about VR before launch, and he thought that separate VR modes were better than trying to slap it on top of a normal game. I have a feeling that if NMS did get VR, it would be more of a non-interactive safari tour of planets.

I seem to remember the planetary views matching the actual terrain better in 1.1 and 1.2. The planets look higher-res from space now in 1.3, but they are less accurate, and sometimes not at all accurate. In some cases it almost looked like the wrong texture pattern was applied. Hard to decide if I like more accurate or higher-res better.

Are the red and blue stars actually still gated by warp upgrades in 1.3? Hawkian was saying they were gated by your ship class now.

I know for a fact at least blue stars require "Warp Drive Theta" as I have one sitting next to the gek system I'm currently in and trying to grind up enough rep to buy the recipe before moving on.

Edit: To weigh in on the VR Debate, I think they could manage it but with MUCH lower graphical fidelity. Since in VR long distance objects are not very clear anyways I think they could manage it with some aggressive culling, but even as an avid VR enthusiast I don't want them to do this until the base game is polished up, as there's so much more I'd like to see first.

Hmm game crashes when it goes to loading shaders screen after I installed mods. I deleted them any it works fine anyway to get game to work without deleting them?

Are there any mods that unlock story mode in Creative mode?

Now that V 1.3 is out, what are some of the essential PC mods for things that have remained uncorrected/imperfected?

I will update it once new mods are released. I have tested them all together but not extensively because the NMS world is so big! There is no guarantee they will perfectly for everyone all the time.

WARNING: Please backup your save game files first, remove the disablemods.txt file in PCBANKS if it exists and delete shader cache before loading the game up with mods. Also make sure you last saved on a space station so none of mods make you get stuck or cause you to die.

Performance Tips:

This is my config file for 60fps+ stutter-free Vanilla NMS at 1440p on a mid-to-high end PC (old overclocked i7, 16Gb slow DDR, 1070 GTX overclocked). Also, in Nvidia I have Prefer Maximum Performance and set Frame Rate Limiter to 90. Even with all these mods installed the game is still playable at worst. Base building limit tweaks are optional and can make base building buggy. For people struggling with low fps, try lowering Shadow Detail and disabling Light Shafts first. TAA and Texture Detail have a greater impact on visual quality. FOV=140 in the config is equal to in-game FOV of 100 but it resets to 100 in the config if you change any settings in the game menu. BACKUP YOUR SAVE GAME, MAIN CACHE AND CURRENT CONFIG FILES FIRST.

I don't think they'll ever 'fix' it, I don't think it's broken, it's just not possible. The planet doesn't generate until you go there. If you could see all the terrain from space it would have to generate multiple planets at once, which isn't possible.

I believe reflections are actually the most graphically intensive setting in NMS. Worth dialing that down before shadows since it's hardly visible.

Is there a trick (in survival) to surviving extreme temperature worlds? I've landed on an ice planet, I have 2x cold protection for my exosuit. But they just suck up the juice like crazy, and the second they are gone my primary hazard protection vanishes. Do I need more tech to take on these worlds? Or on survival are they just better avoided?

Hm, okay thanks.

Someone edited clouds into NMS screenshots https://imgur.com/a/NVpmW#pOBoOSa

Not all of them look like an improvement, but those high-altitude cirrus clouds really make me want a new cloud system in the game.

Overall in 1.3 the representations seem more consistent and accurate. There are times where it's way off, but overall it seems to give you a much better idea.

Dig holes to huddle in while your suit recharges. Only add fuel to your suit when it's fully recharged (to fill the icon). I feel titanium is a lot better than zinc, but I don't have the research. And be willing to wait in shelter while storms happen.

Okay so. I've got everything at around medium in my graphics settings. With vsync on, it does that bullshit thing where it'll either hit 60fps or drop me all the way down to 30. With vsync off, I hover around 57-58fps but I get screen tearing like you would not believe. I've got a GTX970, no way should this be struggling this badly at medium. Anyone got any ideas? I really want to play this but the random switching between 30-60fps is jarring as hell and the screen tearing is almost worse.

Try Ddsabling v-sync and running in borderless mode.

Dismantle everything in your old ship before you swap. Even stuff that was there to begin with.

Just for the sake of clarity - I'm referring to momentum and speed being maintained when you land in water from having jet-boosted outside of it. So if you don't hit anything you persist in travelling at that speed.

Combine this with dolphin diving in and out of the water, with height and gravity persistently stacking onto the speed, you can travel across oceans at quite a ridiculous speed, to the point of killing yourself on impact if you're not careful when reaching land.

If you weren't aware, or if it would help for the tips post, I can try and find an ocean on my travels tomorrow evening (currently 2:22am), record it and make a gif. It's a little tricky since there's not much space to practice or use it, but pre-1.3 I used it to navigate ocean planets, island to island and back, on foot.

Enable v sync and triple buffering in NVCP, disable in game. You'll be right as rain =)

No, I'm aware, it's great. It's like water is air but boost meter isn't consumed in water. I just don't know how to phrase it concisely (the post is right up against the character limit).

Oh god.. This. I need them to fix this. For some reason this takes me out completely from the experience.

And I want my clouds back on PS4.. please

Yeah, I'm not sure what the hell happened to the clouds on PS4. They weren't great before granted. However, I think the update notes mentioned "improved weather". Having no clouds at all isn't improved. Lol.

The weather is one of the few aspects that got worse with the update. Perhaps it's a bug though? Not sure if Hello Games has acknowledged it though.

Fair play, being honest I've only recently got into GAF having dropped off years ago after first registering. The constant lack of discourse and just rampant outrage on Reddit finally wore thin so I came for a peek here and have barely looked back since. Actually nice to be able to have a conversation about things again. As a result though I'm a little unfamiliar with the faces around here and may lack some of the long-standing knowledge.

That's all to say I didn't mean to tread on your toes and imply ignorance, just wanted to explain as it's, as you say, hard to put down concisely.

Oh also from the little I have heard I hear you're a Destiny guy? Have over a thousand hours myself and fell into it in a way I haven't for any game really. Look forward to seeing you in the Destiny 2 post, unless of course I'm completely mistaken, in which case.. that's embarrassing. Oh well, almost three in the morning and I really should make some effort to sleep.

I don't think they'll ever 'fix' it, I don't think it's broken, it's just not possible. The planet doesn't generate until you go there. If you could see all the terrain from space it would have to generate multiple planets at once, which isn't possible.

I understand your point. It may be impossible on PS4 level hardware.. But there's gotta be a better sweet spot than what we have right now. Elite and Space Engine does this pretty well.. Obviously the procedural generation of NMS is a whole other beast.. But maybe generating a very low res representation of each planet's terrain while also looking decent might be feasible.. I don't know..

But I'm sure that doing it well is no walk on the park..
