No see that's not how this works.
What?
the N64 sold nearly half the Saturn's Ltd in first year.
It then in 2 years was less than 800k for the Saturn's Ltd.
All I have access to is the final sales tally, personally. But I'd very much like to read a more detailed breakdown if you'd be so inclined to share. Let's not kid ourselves, though, alot of that has to be because of the impact of the transition to 3D and because the Saturn's library was lacking in that particular regard, not because the library was bad or lacking in general.
That was with lower software sales, few Jrpgs, and a 2 year delay.
Not that it matters but weren't N64 sales heavily frontloaded across all regions? All it's system sellers came out within the first 2 years, no? Again, this is irrelevant to the discussion at hand, I'm actually asking as I'm curious and you seem to know more than me about the subject.
Your Megadrive comparison was flawed. The Saturn did well in japan and had the popular genres they wanted to play there. The Megadrive never did well in Japan. Even in the west its status didn't really start until Sonic 1s release.
There not much of a comparison between the Saturn and Megadrive. Add that the Snes wasnt delayed for two years after advertising skipped launch dates, and the fact the mega drive overseas only became competitive after Snes came out.
For Japan you also have to consider the TG16 which makes you're SNES Japanese comparison irrelevant anyway. The PC engine slapped the Megadrive around before the SNES came out there.
You misread my point, that's why it's coming across as flawed. I know the Mega Drive was never successful, I even said so in my post and that is precisely the point. Considering how "unsuccessful" (they had moderate success, I'm speaking relatively, here) Sega had been up until that point and how succesful and dominant Nintendo had been, market analysis principles paint the Saturn as a roaring success when compared to the N64. That the N64 did so poorly (again, relatively) despite Nintendo's track record with consumers up 'til that point and that it had a much bigger novelty item factor going for it with the analog stick and complete focus on 3D paints a clear picture to me, the Saturn is by far Sega's greatest success story in Japan. Which is the main point of my comparison because the fifth generation was still heavily dominated by japanese developers, which is even more so the case when it comes to the Saturn's library (which is essentially my only point). I am not and was not overselling the Saturn's library in the slightest. It is completely filled to the brim with hit after hit after hit if you're of the arcade inclination (which I have always been and remain to this day). If arcade titles aren't your thing, there was still plenty to love but of course... arcade experiences were the backbone of the system. It is unquestionably one of the greatest ever systems if you value arcade titles in the slightest (much like the PC Engine, which also has a beastly library that is also often belittled by westerners who don't much care for arcade experiences).
The Saturn was a completely different situation. It just wasn't a strong enough console over there.
It was still as strong as Sega ever was in Japan by quite a margin and a beastly system for arcade conversions.
As for Xbox you're desperate. We have threads with console exclusives and full exclusives. You are trying to act like Xbox only has 12 exclusives which is false and why no ones taking your post seriously. You also seem to repeat the nonsense that games on PC don't count when you likely dont have a PC that can run AAA games like MOST PC gamers, and the Windows store doing poorly also proves that no one's playing many Xbox games on PC.
Xbox is also ran competently and quickly fixes mistakes, unlike Sega who never had any real standing in the console market outside one time, and got lucky ONE time with ONE console and still fucked up and messed that up to.
I'm going to preface what I'm about to say by making it quite obvious I have no ill feelings towards the Xbox brand in the slightest. I jumped on the original Xbox very soon in it's life because, as a Sega Kid, that's where alot of my favorite IPs moved to. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, OutRun 2 and Crazy Taxi 3 were all huge deals for me personally. 360 was my main platform last gen for the longest time until I transitioned into PC gaming about ~7 years ago.
That said, how is the FACT that it has only 12 exclusives false? It is an indisputable matter of fact that is beyond questioning and one of the driving factors behind me not having bought a One yet. I will be purchasing one eventually, that much I know for sure. I even own 5 games for it already (Rare Replay, Master Chief Collection, Halo 5, Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive) but the fact of the matter is, considering I can play almost everything I want on my PC, I really see no point in purchasing a One yet. Gotta say, that appeal to probability was very weird on your part considering how loud I am about being a PC first guy and that this is an enthusiast forum. And you can bet I am one of the people using the Windows store (though I've only used it for Quantum Break and Forza Horizon 3 and 4, so far).
I love that you resort to insulting Sega as if that adds any relevance to your point. Sega was incompetently managed and deserved what they got, it was a result of their own incompetence. Me being a Sega fanboy doesn't prevent me from noticing how poorly run the company was or how stupid many of their decisions were. I love Sega for their games. I love the Mega Drive, the Saturn and the Dreamcast for their libraries. I wouldn't still be into collecting for them nowdays if I could get the same games elsewhere because the fact of the matter is I couldn't care less about the collecting itself, I just want to be able to play the games (I immediately sold my copies of Guardian Heroes and Radiant Silvergun as soon as they got released on 360). That is the problem with the Xbox One as a platform for us enthusiasts... the games just aren't there. I have a PS4, a Switch and a 3DS because they're full of exclusive titles I can't get anywhere else (or because they offer portability). The One has very little to pique my interest outside of what it's backward compatibility offers. There is nothing false about it only having 12 exclusives, that is the
exact amount of exclusive releases it has.
As a big Forza Horizon fan, I very much approve of Microsoft's decision to publish it's games on PCs, by the way. The One is also quite an awesome console. If I could use my 360 controllers on it I would've bought one already to replace my 360.
