November 2016 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes Tuesday, December 6th

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Since there's been such a huge talk of sales numbers for November, console life's trends and all the likes, I've decided to better contextualise whatever numbers PS4 and One will get (whether the currently discussed numbers are true or not) by posting November and December sales for several consoles, complete with YOY trends.

Note: Most of the numbers listed here have been publically released by NPD, especially up to 2010s. Others (especially more recent ones) come from leaks or relliable-enough estimates published by Gamasutra. Also, considering sales for each consoles up to the last time they were what can be considered as "relevant".

Home consoles Holiday numbers for PS2/XBX/GC gen and PS3/360/WII gen

Software has been a disaster.

It really has been the 2nd half of the year. No idea what the hell is going on. Honestly the first half of this year was pretty much fine. Uncharted did great, Overwatch did great, DOOM has really nice sales, etc.

Then starting with Deus Ex everything just cratered from then on. It is bizarre

But there that: https://m.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/5hjiap/jez_corden_of_windows_central_lied_about_knowing/

Looks like the author got the number on crapgamer podcast.

No. He got the number before. The Mooch number he's talking would seem to be the 100K gap that he did not run with before getting more confirmation.

Hello. I am Jez Corden from Windows Central. We are known for leaking accurate information from inside sources. We take this reputation for reliability incredibly seriously, while at the same time, giving away the identity of our sources is not something I am able to do for various reasons.

A: The people who leaked this information to me are under contract NOT to give away sales figures, the people who gave me these figures said they didn't care either way if I posted them. Clearly these figures are of interest.

B: I started digging for hard information at the start of the podcast, because I'm a professional. I have sources, and I was interested to know if Mooch was speaking the truth or it was some fake news/hyperbole/rumor that was being used to further some Xbox fanboy's agenda. Turns out it wasn't.

C: At the end of the podcast, I revealed that I did finally get the hard figures, and they were accurate. I invite Sony, Xbox, or anyone to come and refute them. I know 100% that these figures are accurate, and have since confirmed their validity with secondary sources.

Cheers.

I like to try and give some balance, which is why I didn't entertain their 100K figures until I got some hard facts. I appreciate what you're saying and will take it into consideration.

It reads to me like he's got real sources and he was unwilling to believe this Mooch guy at first pass. Both good signs for his numbers being true. PRs are next week, so we'll see if anything else comes out then. Maybe a "PS4/XB1 are x% ahead of PS360 at the same point" type statement which could be used to corroborate these or not.

for all those people, who still have some doubts about the numbers and that article/writer

These numbers were off of the radar of many people, except for Cosmic and maybe a few others, so I understand the doubts, but now is pretty clear that is true.

I wonder if it's because people want new refreshing experiences? I'm wondering if mostly stale sequels are getting to people and there is a lack of excitement for people on most the titles that came out in the fall. I think people want new exciting things otherwise they'd rather stick to what they have. With cod for example I would say that most people are happy with blops 3 compared to infinite warfare that really hasn't pulled in people with it's reception. I also think Black friday is having negative implications on games in the fall period . I think a decent amount of people have picked up on getting these games much cheaper and especially if it's single player.

Well maybe quality and listening to consumer wishes started to matter again ?

Doom, U4 and Overwatch were great

Deus not so much
WD2 and TF2 were hit by bad previous games
CoD direction was against people wishes since "modern/futuristic" is so overdone

BF1 did good and suprise it was fresh era and highly polished game

I'm finally back... and I lost my bet, damn!

The figures don't seem particularly good but not entirely bad either. Having lost one bet, I'll just double down on it. That's the way to do it, right?

Given that December is Pros second month, I'm fairly confident that XB1 will come out on top given the sort of distribution between Slim and Pro that likely happened this month and how Pro obviously won't have a similar second month post launch.

If pro didn't launch, people would have bought ps4

You know that's not a valid equivalence. We can't really make such a claim without having a barometer on how many were hyper-spenders who already owned a PS4 and simply bought a shinier new model.

Of course we can't. Neither can we know what sony would have done without pro.
Earlier price cut to 250
Cod bundle
We don't know
So let's take the numbers as they are or go to probability land
(sorry if i sound rude. Coming home from christmas party. Boy am i wasted)

Infinite Warfare big drop remembered Pachter in his show downplaying the drop in UK, saying that week one sales doesn't matter and that nobody cares for UK.

I would love to see his comments about 51% drop in US.

The year started with SFV and its decline. Little did I know that SFV wasn't going to be the only game to drop a ridiculous amount over its predecessor, nor even the one that would suffer the biggest decline.

What a brutal year for SW.

So the crazy thing is that SIEA indeed had no other bundle in the works for NA after all. No COD IW, no Watchdogs2, nothing...

Software should be coming soon no? (I know the official thread is scheduled to be in +/- 2.5hrs).

as i said; expect new bundles in q1 2017 for february. plenty of exclusives to bundle with for sony. and no cod or wd bundle made sense, as we now know sony moved a lot less hardware compared to last year.

horizon could be big. maybe a first limited edition slim version.
sony is aware of the fact that they cant go into the new year with just one bundle being a one year old game, that is not exactly a long life service driven big multiplayer game. BOIII worked well for 9 months. neary every other game won't.

i'm curious how long microsoft will run bf1 and minecraft. those games are similar to BOIII with huge legs.

It looks like there really are no plans for any other PS4 bundles this year. That is just insane to me. Did they just way overstocked UC4 bundles or something?

I'm interested in seeing what makes it and what doesn't. I think the guarantees are:
Battlefield 1
Pokémon moon
Pokémon Sun
COD

And the remaining 6 spots going to either
- dishonoured
- watchdogs
- titanfall
-skyrim
- gears
- GTA
-NBa2k
-Madden
-FIFA
-Mafia(doubtful)

I'll say Mafia, Dishonored(even going by revenue), madden and GTA don't chart

Keep in mind that since the rankings are now based on revenue instead of units that puts titles that saw discounts along with Pokémon Sun and Moon at a disadvantage since their average price of purchase will be substantially lower.

Or Sony don't see interest in stocking bundles on 2 badly selling games. IW interest is literally half of Black Ops 3 and if UK is any idication Watch Dogs 2 did terribly as well. Microsoft got the best third party bundle with BF1.

Sony sticking with UC4 probably saves them money as well, in addition to them being able to swap it out with a future first party bundle in spring.

Pokemon is exclusive, split in two, has a lower price, and has no digital. Its only advantage is its lack of price cuts. I'm sure it will chart this time, but if the last two months' releases were stronger Pokemon could've been the top selling game and still not chart at all under the new format.

It is hard to impose some kind of order on the market right now, but I'm gonna stab at it.

One thing that gets lost is discussions is churn. I understand that the console market has tremendous churn, lots of people leave the market which means a bunch must enter if things are to stay in equilibrium. Exits occur when gameplayers change life stages, eg going to uni, entering workforce, getting married, etc. Exits may also be gradual, as interest tapers instead of a cold turkey dinner thing. Age of exit is probably 18-40, depending on how long it takes individuals to get to the various stages.

When do people enter the console market? The bulk probably enter as kids, and usually at Christmas: I'm guessing 8-16.

So, if the console market starts to see a reduction in new player aquisition assuming the exit rate remains the same, how will that be reflected in sales? Well, fewer consoles under trees and fewer sales of big Christmas season releases while other releases remain mostly unaffected at the start.

Is that happening here? Couldn't tell you because I'm just throwing out baseless ideas here, but modelling an unstable, high churn population is an interesting exercise.

No need to waste money on an IW or WD2 bundle here in the states when the UC4 bundle is selling and most likely making them money.

The BF bundle for MS I really wonder if it was worth it. How did it sell?

Even with them underperforming I'm sure the mass market would find them much more appealing than Uncharted currently is as a pack in.

That is an incredibly insightful theory. I've never really thought about the impact of churn in the video games market at length but your conclusions make a lot of sense. With more and more kids opting to game via mobile devices this could very well be the case.

The BF bundle for MS I really wonder if it was worth it. How did it sell?

It's likely to be their best selling pack in by a large margin

Would they though? I'm sure right now Sony is looking at it from a revenue perspective and right now the UC4 Slim is most likely giving them great margins. Doing a COD bundle will likely cost them more money to put out at the exact same price.

Next year we'll probably see a Horizon bundle, and the 3rd party bundle could potentially be Mass Effect. That said next Holiday is probably better for them to go all out. RDR2 bundle, Destiny 2 bundle, and a potential Battlefront Bundle.

But the question would be, do those third party bundles cause more consumers to buy a PS4? Going with WindowsCentral 1.1M PS4's, would a CoD bundle have the PS4 doing 1.1M plus an additional amount of what the CoD bundle would sell or would the end result still be 1.1M, just with less UC4 bundles?

Sony probably figured CoD or Watch Dogs 2 would not help sell more consoles than what they were already projecting.

You're right in that it's likely a revenue win for them but at this point I think they should be focusing on expanding user base more than revenue with HW sales especially with the attach rate figures the console has and the increase of digital sales for which they make substantially more profit.

I absolutely think they would've sold more with either of the above as an option. their focus on making HW profitable is bizarre. considering the market shifts we've seen with digital and tie ratios you'd figure they'd be doing everything they can to expand their market appeal and user base to capitalize on Post sake revenue streams but instead they're opting to prioritize up front HW purchase profit.

Shows how confident sony is if all they have is an uncharted 4 bundle.

Sure confident is one word you could use for it. Short sighted and tone deaf are some others.

Sure confident is one word you could use for it. Short sighted and tone deaf are some others.

Come on now. What's tone deaf about not releasing a WD2 or IW bundle?

Not providing more options for bundles with newer more mass appeal games for consumers during the holiday season is pretty tone deaf IMO. There are reasons PS4 has been down YoY since Slim launched. I think one of the biggest is that the market does not find an Uncharted bundle that appealing especially with the competition offering bundles for newer more popular games.

Again. I don't think people are clamoring for IW or WD2 bundles. And they'll more than likely hit their 60 million goal by end of the FY. So is there really a need to flood the market with 2 more bundles costing more money in order to achieve something you'll hit anyway?

My assumption is that next year provides Sony a better reason to go all out with games that will no doubt have buying power. ME, Horizon, RDR2, Destiny 2 and Battlefront 2.

I believe Sony hoped that the Pro would take the PS4 to numbers well better than ~1.1m. Maybe still down YoY, but not that much.

It is hard to impose some kind of order on the market right now, but I'm gonna stab at it.
Good stab.
I still think that hardware wise the market is doing fine, and on the software side, the two big problems are overstretched price point and too long games. Both go hand in hand. People buy games less often because they are really expensive. And when they do, they want quantity, preferably with multiplayer. No wonder sandbox games where you can simply mess around for weeks and shooters are the most successful games. Games like gta online or overwatch eat playtime (and money) that is lost for other games. Maybe in the end less games are bought, but the time wasted on this stupid hobby by the sum of console owners hasn't changed so much.

It's funny that now sony is concentrating on profit and doesn't care about sales numbers. Not too long ago, it was spencer who said that.

I don't get how sony planned with only one bundle. How could they have known cod sold so much less? A year ago, the cod bundle was the smartest move. And now NO cod bundle is the smartest move.

Waiting for 3DS and Pokémon numbers right now, especially the former.

As always, the dino is right.
At least they could have offered one alternative. Let it be something family friendly like lego or ratchet of whatever.
I understand they are proud of uncharted and want to push their ip, also save money, but still this is lame.
