It really is. At first my favorite blackout songs were "Piece of Me" and "Toy Soldier"( I was particularly amazed by TS when i first heard it). Toy Soldier got old really quick and while Piece of Me still is a favorite of mine, its also lost of some of its luster.
Toy Soldier still floors me, it's so good. I think that was the only song on Blackout that I was CONVINCED would be a single that didn't end up being released. Get Naked
deserved to be showcased, as you said, but I figured it may not have been a likely choice for Top 40 radio, though Break The Ice didn't make much noise there itself (another great song, we could do this for days). That's why I'm glad Get Naked made the Circus tour. Hopefully it'll become a new staple of her future tours.
The only Blackout songs that I initially loved but managed to grow old on me were Freakshow, and as you mentioned, Piece of Me. But I fell back in love with both songs after the Circus tour boost, it's hard not to reignite that initial excitement after songs are given that treatment.
But man, almost 2 years later and "Get Naked" still gets heavy rotation and never gets old. If anything it gets better for me. The perfect workout song. Its brilliant and its a shame it will never get the single treatment. My favorite Blackout track, by far.
I agree. The leaked early mix of it blew me away, but the album version topped it. Who did the male vocals in the chorus, was it one of Danja's crew (Jim Beanz or someone like that)?
On my
very first listen of the early mix, the instant the chorus kicked in I was stoked to assume it was a heavily distorted / pitch-dropped Britney vocal (like the deep mores in Gimme More). Not the case, but that would've been neat.
I just think Britney is well... Britney! She's developed her own style of pop (which Madonna is now using like in "Revolver" aka poor man's radar). She's definitely her own person in the industry now.
Very well said, I totally agree. This is similar to a discussion on BritneyBoards from a few days ago. One of the posters suggested that Britney should record more personal material alongside acoustic guitars more often, like in the For My Sister demo.
That led some of us to bring up the very point you mentioned: that there's no real need for Britney to step too far out of the realm she's in at this point, nor do we
want her to. There's always new space to evolve and impress in her brand of sultry / bubblegum pop, Britney doesn't need to change for the sake of change. Her bread and butter still gets it done, it's an iconic trademark that won't soon (hopefully ever) change.
Though I don't think that OP on BritneyBoards was off-base or anything. That style isn't what pays Britney's bills but she's always had a toe dipped in that pool, since the beginning...I never mind hearing that side of her.
Anyway, I wonder what the new Britannica message is all about? I hink its the new single for the GH #2. hopefully it'll be quality and not some "My Preogative" shit.
God, seriously. My Prerogative is one of the all-time epic Britney disappointments. Though it didn't take me by surprise, I thought Bobby Brown's original was shit too...a boring song is a boring song is a boring song. The bonus version of the video on the MP DVD (just one extended take of the bed / lingerie scene) rocks, though.
Do Somethin', on the other hand, kicked ass.
But I do think the Britannica hoopla has to be the proper announcement of the GH album. It's, what, like a little over a month away according to the big retailers? It seems set in stone that this thing is coming so all we're waiting on is that official statement...and I imagine that'll be what this is all about.
I'd love if a new single is announced alongside the package, as you said. Hasn't it been confirmed that some of the stuff she was recording was for this set? I could've sworn I saw something online from some of the collaborators that said as such. So I assume a new single would be inevitable in that case.
