I assumed they were stopping imports of hardware saying it was due to quality control, but probably more likely because they'd be losing money.

Um. They lose money on the hardware. Financially it would probably be in their best interests to allow imports of hardware but not software, and shift the hardware loss off onto SCEA. :D

Link for this?

I can possibly see this being true if you have an SD TV and expect your PAL PS3 to output NTSC on an import. The PAL PS3 specs make no mention of 480i or 480p at all. Instead it supports 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p. Maybe it really does support NTSC but it certainly doesn't say it.

Then again, if you have an HD set I see no reason why an import wouldn't work since the same resolutions are supported by every region. And every EU HD set would be via HDMI anyway.

No link, this thread post #520 made me worry...

might be BS but I want to be sure before I shell out 1000$ (yes the price of a PS3 + HDMI cable in Sweden)

Err Play-Asia has an injunction against them from shipping PlayStation software to the EU. That has very little to do with whether the system can play the titles or not.

I never said it did, what I said was, it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that PAL PS3 couldn't play import games, since it would be just another link in SCEE's chain of shame. I presented the pictures as evidence that SCEE are actively working against imports.

Mmmkay said:
There are other import sites you can use.

The number of those is rapidly shrinking though. As far as I know there's only YesAsia left for Europeans wanting to buy Japanese or Asian games, since Lik-Sang went down.

Firstly, I edited... Secondly their actions against importing had no effect on PAL PSPs so why is this assumption suddenly valid for the PS3?

It's not assumption, it's mere speculation. The reason it's being speculated is that SCEE have clearly stepped up their import-banning game a level or two since PSP. Back in PSP pre-EU-launch days they were just sending out C&D letters to ebayers, but now they have their High Court ruling to back them up they are throwing their weight around more.

Why would they throw their weight around if the software was incompatible in the first place? Retailers would simply not want to sell it to those countries on their own initiative.

That's not exactly true, I use three other sites for japanese imports... But the problem is indeed real.

YesAsia joined the gang: they don't ship Sony stuff to Europe anymore. :(

edit: But oh well, there's always eBay.

So the biggest norwegian newspaper has the PS3 launch as it's top story today. 'The largest console release ever'.
They have reviewed both Resistance and MotorStorm giving the shooter a
4s.gif
and the offroad racer a
5s.gif
. (That's out of six for you who has never seen a dice before).

The funny thing is they admit in both reviews that they haven't played neither online because you can't log onto PSN in EU atm apparently.

I thought it was. Is VG #1? "Tabloid' It's flashy but the main news stories still focus on international events.

Got my coupon for a free PS3 game from amazon.de today at last, already got a bit worried since its so close to The Day. :) There were only 5 games to choose from though, ordered Motorstorm. Other options were RFOM, F1, RR7 and Genji.

Motorstorm climbed to number 1 in bestseller list at Amazon.de today, with Resistance at the place 4, PS3 itself entered top10. You can still preorder the console, no problem with stock whatsoever in Germany, unbelievable.

So first 500,000 units get Casino Royale. So is this first 500,000 online or something? Does this deal still stand?
How fast did you Americans get your Taladega Nights??
Do you Americans feel bad you got That and we're getting the kick ass Casino Royale?

If any americans enter this thread I am sure you will find out ;)

Anyway. Someone here must have a PAL PS3 by now so we can confirm that NTSC PS3 games work once and for all.

I need to know this before I buy the system.

I live in Australia and I will participate in a midnight launch so I guess I can post the answer ~17:00 on Thursday, GMT+1 time. I own a US version of Resistance.

Don't get splinter cell, it's a trap.

Amazingly Enchanted Arms seems to be expected for launch day, despite not coming out for another month in America. I'm not sure about the logic there, given the extra content would have required additional localisation time compared to the US version. *shrug* It has been entirely too quiet, I expect it's going to be the same low effort port that Japan got.

That's good to hear. I do hope we won't have to wait that long for a confirmation regarding this though.

Oh that's strange, the other day I could have sworn Playstation.com was saying the end of April... They don't even list it any more, my mind must have been playing tricks on me. It looks like it's supposed to be the first week of April, yeah.

Hopefully thats the case. The us.playstation website usually changes a lot, but will put up the correct date about a week or so before the expected date. Thats happened to me a couple times. :p Kinda odd I don't see splinter cell up on there yet. Anyways...

First week April is good news if true. Thanks for the info Mmmkay. :)
...I'm late for class, gotta run. :/

I haven't seen it yet myself but I've heard that El-Gigantens (Swedish version of Elkjöp etc etc) price is 5999:-, I'm not sure if this includes anything though. So far, SIBAs deal seems to be the best one.

Any more news on Euro PS3s not playing American/Japanese PS3 games? Getting a bit worried now since I've already traded loads of stuff in and have about £450 worth of credit notes...

Both are very nice deals. But I'll stick with DiscShop.

I've cancelled my preorder, I wasn't really excited about it, I really wasn't interested in the current catalog or fancy features since I don't have an HDTV yet, I was trying to convince myself but I think I'd rather wait a few months than buy it and be sorry I did.

Midas: Accroding to SIBA.se they have run out of pre-orders, maybe just the website though?

The Finnish version, Gigantti, has it for 669€, which is the cheapest price I've seen here. Most places have it for 679€, some for 689€ and then there's Anttila/Kodin 1, the biggest game retailer in Finland, who are selling the system for a friggin' 699€. Ripoff.

No bundles or whatsoever. At least I haven't spotted one yet.

God, can't believe its almost here!

I've got mine preordered, getting Motorstorm for free with it and buying Resistance for now, also getting 32" Bravia before launch, so I'm set for hi-res gaming goodness!

I have a question, will all european countries be able to access the billable download content on the PSN or is it going to be restricted to just free content for the distributor countries?

I haven't heard anything about some countries not getting access to the PS Store. Are you sure about this. I'm from Portugal, and we've been screwed with XBox Live in the past, so i'm kind of worried if what you say is true.

well... that is true, but they would also risk showing considerably lower hardware sales. if there was a mass amount of hardware importing it would certainly contribute to a lackluster launch as those looking to import are most-likely a large part of the people willing to buy at launch.

I called SIBA today at work, and when I asked about the bundle she said something like "Did you preorder? It's not for preorders". I'll call them again tomorrow to make sure that they understood what I asked.

Seriously, more people SHOULD be worried about this.

Especially how Sony traditionally treats PAL territories (late, expensive software and sometimes never even released). Would not surprise me if they made the PAL machine incompatible with US PS3 games :(

Yeah, and a couple of hours less until we will know if this "PAL PS3 can't play US games" thing turns out to be true for sure, if Wollan doesn't lie to us. :lol
