People are mad that Death Stranding could win 2019 GOTY Award

i didnt get at all his point of saving merica or saving world , connecting with people , connecting how ? via stairs ? you leave stairs in mountains so you connecting with other players ? hmm dont think so. except for some bizare cutscenes , outside that gameplay i find i got bored ... and i baught this game like second day because i thought yes i want be delivery guy, but i was thinking of delivery job differently then kojima was i see now. man at least in MGS5 i had horse from beggining and you can steal any car from beginning too, in DS thought i p0layed for some hrs and still cant get any transport or legs upgrade ... i mean run there and back and meet black ones , then run from black ones , go back and deliver some more bags... MGS5 was better then this actually.

Nobody should be mad, because what few “awards” that Keighley’s show gives out are beyond meaningless. “The Game Awards” is the video game equivalent of two hours of QVC or a Sham-Wow infomercial. The “awards” are so meaningless, in fact, that Dorito Pope doesn’t even allow most of them to be given out during the telecast.

It’s a good thing, too, because if the “awards” were remotely worth a damn, the conflict of interest would be out of this fucking world.

I don’t give a shit how many times people— being paid by Keighley for their roles as “judges” for the show, in terms of travel expenses or otherwise— claim that Keighley has “nothing to do” with how the awards turn out.

It’s Keighley’s show! He pays for most of it. He produces it. He hosts it. He plans it. He does most of the legwork to make it happen. I cannot and will not buy the argument that Keighley doesn’t have full creative control of his show and cannot at least have some influence upon award outcomes.

Keighley’s... obsession with Kojima is well-documented. The man came close to tears talking about how his mancrush was not allowed to attend his show one year (boo-fucking-hoo). He all but fellates the man any chance he gets. Worse in terms of perception is the fact that Keighley was given a guest spot in the game in question. That, over and above everything else, would SCREAM impartiality.

Luckily for Keighley, people with common sense understand that any “award” that comes from him doesn’t mean shit. They tune in to watch the cringe factor and the CG trailers to hype upcoming releases. They watch the dumb-as-shit speeches, the embarrassing crowd reactions, and the same four commercials on repeat. They mute their televisions when (insert lame musical act name here) comes out to fill time. Maybe twice.

“The Game Awards” will never be legitimate, much as Keighley thinks they are publicly and privately wishes we’d all believe. He’d be far smarter if he would just accept this, do away with the foolish “awards”, and charged the format of the show into a hype tool for the coming year. Keep showing those trailers. Do a few pre-recorded gameplay demos with publishers. Maybe do some interviews or short videos taking viewers behind the scenes of the previous year’s biggest games. (Since “games journalism” no longer does this.)

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. His show, his format, his “awards”.

As others have already noted Geoff K doesn't have a vote in the actual results, however I think it was pretty short sighted of him to agree to the cameo he made in DS because it inherently undermined the credibility of the whole VGAs to many people as he is the public face to the organisation
Only the stupid ones.

Look, objectively having a "likeness-only" appearance in a game is frankly nothing. Owning shares in a company developing or publishing a GOTY is a far more compelling reason for malfeasance. In fact any sort of financial relationship should be looked into if you wanted to assure a result absolutely free of cronyism or corruption.

But I'm pretty sure they don't check that out, and it all gets chalked up to the vagaries of "taste" even when the vote source has numerous skeletons in its closet.

Long story short, expecting people to skew voting because they have their faces onscreen briefly, is frankly childish. Gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry, with all kinds of vested interests in play. Assuming everything works like a high-school popularity contest is over-simplifying to the point of a cartoon. The real world doesn't work like that.

Personally I don’t think Death Stranding is GoTY let alone of the generation. Death stranding isn’t a bad game, but it’s definitely not the second coming of Jesus like some people treat it. I’m nearly done with it and as of right now it’s a 7/10 game (not a bad score). Kojima definitely got some extra points with some outlets for his name alone for this game.

Who the fuck cares if a game wins GOTY or not? It's the same shit when people get outraged because a game they like faces criticism...stop putting your own damn identity into a game

Honestly, I don't care anymore. If DS wins Goty, I'll just grab my glass of wine, go outside on the balcony and laugh into the night, shouting 'you clowns! You goddamn clowns did it!'. Then I'll get drunk and tweet something containing the words 'fuckojima', 'Doritos Pope' and 'i hate you dad', but not before typing a WhatsApp message to that goth girl that turned me down 3 times already. I'll then fall asleep and wake up next day to find I vomited all over my bed in sleep. I'll sit down on my chair and contemplate about life. I take out my phone, watch Quiet's rain cutscene from MGS5 and fap one out. I then clean up the room, swear to never drink again and go for a walk outside. Some friend texts me, saying 'lol did you see what won goty? Fucking DS!!1'. I look up from the phone's screen to the sky and make a deep sigh. "I don't care ..." I mumble as I proceed to find out what life has left in store for me.

Does anyone even watch the show for the awards? Seems like most people tune in for the announcements and trailers.
The way they hand out some of these awards (some are handed out during the pre show, some are just awarded in a bulk before a commercial break, etc) makes it look like not even the show organizers really care about the awards either.

Still though, people can say "b..but Geoff doesn't vote" all they want. When you have a game with an 83 metascore having the most nominations in an awards show hosted, produced and organized by a person who is in the game, is friends with the creator of that game and introduces said creator as the second coming of jesus every time he can .... it's obviously going to raise some eyebrows

As much as I enjoyed the game, it's not going to win most of the awards it's nominated for. I think Control will be the surprise winner.

That said, it's the fucking Game Awards. It's really not that serious.

it’s really funny how the games best scores are all given by people they put in the game.
Yeah, that Conan O'brien review was absolutely glowing!

Seriously though, this is the first I've heard of this. What reviewers are in the game?

Again, he has nothing to do with the voting. Move on already
He is the producer of the show and as such, I think it would be important to stay impartial and if one is not impartial, to make the products you cannot be impartial to from eligability. He is free to not do this, but then he will have to live with the corresponding criticism. He does not need to directly pick nominees to have some direct or indirect influence on the outcome of such a voting (e.g. by the choice of who gets to nominate or vote) and therefore I think he should have taken DS out of the equation. Shuld have done the same for Yoshi's Crafted World if he was a Craft in that.

He doesn’t pick the nominees also. It’s funny how just because Death Stranding on the list there’s a lot of fuss but when BotW won it? It’s okay. When the Dragon Age: Inquisition won it? It’s okay. When Telltale’s Walking Dead won it? It’s okay. But this time? Oh noooo how can someone in the industry have a strong relationship with a developer in the same industry have his game among the nominees? Oh because it’s his show so he’s probably going to make him win. He doesn’t nominate nor vote. If Death Stranding wasn’t among the nominees nobody would’ve said shit but yeah here’s that. Many other categories and awards won by games that didn’t deserve shit among the other nominees with it. But that’s fine I guess

It's not my GOTY (RE2 is), but it should probably win. It's unique and bold and fun in ways I wasn't expecting.

His max-cringe Gamescom Kojima suckfest montage and general abundance of annual event fawning already did the damage to TGA's perceived lack of objectivity. But yeah, it's silly to question their friendship when Keighley doesn't even get a vote.

holy fuck I just finished chapter 9
This game DESERVES to win that GOTY 100%
Geezus christ how is this game so fucking good and how did they make it in like 3 years..

This game was memed so fucking hard as a walking simulator and then u had idiotic reviewers like ign who gave it a 6.7 while complaining in his review about how much time it takes to fast travel while u barely need to use it in this game. I bet he did not even finish the game. And u had idiotic reviewers like jim sterling who have to use a clickbait title as ''made for walking'' while u can do so many missions with a bike or car. And god dam u also had stupid reviewers who kept complaining about it being tedious when u have to keep pressing both triggers to walk stable but u get so many shit like power skeletons to counter that.

Dam, this game was not reviewed by so many for what it actually is and many people either did not finish it or went in with so much hate.

Game with the best story in 2019
Best cutscenes and once u get passed the first 2 chapters u are not bombared with big long cutscenes constantly.
The performances from the actors are REALLY good
The music in this game is brilliant. Very wel chosen and there really are some breathtaking moments when music starts playing while on a long hike.
The bosses look insane, sure they are pretty easy but its not even their idea to have hard bosses but the visuals dam..
Amazing mechanics in the game like the way u can climb everything, descent with the ropes. Use ziplines, build ladders, bridges
A really unique great online component that really makes a difference

People need to shut up about this game not being GOTY worthy. most people who say it are either just hating cozz they think geof is rigging it
or they have not played it and only listened to reviewers who clearly had a hard time reviewing this game for what it is

Would that be any worse than The Walking Dead from Telltale winning GOTY?

Because no, it wouldn't.
Thank you. But I guess that’s fine because it isn’t a Kojima game and they aren’t friends with Geoff

I am unaware he has particularly strong ties to Walking Dead or BotW. You know, it is not like I have a huge investment in either nominated game. I do not own a single one of the games nominated, for good reason. I couldn't care less if Death Stranding wins this over any of the other games, they all mean nothing to me. But my understanding of professionalism and decency commands that to ensure a fair process, distance is required. Where that distance cannot be guaranteed, exempt the candidate.

It was great to watch that God of War give finger to Red Dead 2 last year. Now I'd like to watch that Death Stranding gives finger these groups in the same way.

Keighley’s obsession with Kojima wouldn’t be so damning if he just got rid of the foolish “awards”. Hell, a behind-the-scenes mini-feature on Death Stranding as one of 2019’s most significant releases could’ve worked well.

Even if the claims that Keighley has nothing to do with the “awards” somehow were proven accurate, it’s still a crisis of perception.

Why is a game, developed by a team helmed by a man that the show’s creative director/producer/host/primary financier has publicly adored and supported, which also features this creative director/producer/host/primary financier in a small role, being nominated so many times for significant accolades?

The perception stinks, but it’s one that Keighley brought onto himself and his show through his own willful (and myopic) actions.

Yes, thank you, indeed, that is precisely the point. Do I personally think Walking Dead is a great game? No. But I have no reason to assume there is any issue with the process. Just a lot of people having a different taste than me.

same thing applies on Death Stranding. Why is it a special case now? Because Geoff has a strong relationship with Kojima? He has strong relationships with other developers too. What makes this years case any different?

He is part of the game. He was involved in making the game. If I were heading NeoGAF games of the years procedures, I sure would take my own game out of the process entirely. I expect this to be a standard consideration.

In a year where games like RE2 Remake exist, yeah, I can see why they'd be mad. Death Stranding is nowhere near the best release of the year, but we know the Game Awards are all about backstage politics and string-pulling favors, no different than the film and music awards. Awards hardly go out to the best candidates, just the most popular or hype-generating.

So what? Where’s the problem exactly? He isn’t the one nominating nor voting so I don’t find an issue. Unless he goes around threatening the outlets that’s voting then that’s a different case. As it stands, there’s nothing wrong with it as long as Geoff isn’t nominating nor voting.

Aside from:

— Keighley actually being IN THE GAME that’s been heavily nominated?

— Keighley’s documented fanboy-level obsession with Kojima, which has been made very public (on his own shows and on social media)?

You’re being exceptionally disingenuous with your defense here. If Keighley does have “strong relationships” with other industry players, none of them have been made more public or into more of a spectacle than his relationship with Kojima.

Death Stranding may or may not be the best game of 2019, but Keighley’s connections to the game’s key development team player and his acceptance of having a role in the game in question should have disqualified it from consideration on the awards show that he pays for and produces. The questionable perception is his fault, based on his actions.

The bolded cannot be proven. You’re choosing to believe this based on hearsay, whether it’s from Keighley himself or from testimony from “judges” that Keighley is compensating for services rendered— even if only for travel expenses.

Also because he’s in the game, and it’s really funny how the games best scores are all given by people they put in the game.
This! Everyone but the most unbelievably autistic fans is aware that at the end of the day this is pretty meaningless, but it's at least obnoxious that the most "prestigious" gaming award could be won by a game that will always have that question. This is like if Depression Quest had won any GOTY award when Zoe was boning gaming journos.

On the other hand, I do understand that DS isn't completely without merit. Some people legit feel it's GOTY and that's fine, it's also unrelated to why people question the validity of this award. This could have been avoided by, you know, The Pope and the Famitsu Bro not being featured in the game.

It has been mentioned many times by now. Come on, don't act like super fanboy :/
I’m not being a “super fanboy” I’m being reasonable. He isn’t nominating nor voting so why’s that a problem? You got a problem with both of them dudes? That’s up to you. Just don’t go around saying the game doesn’t fucking deserve to be there because “Geoff is in it” or because “he’s gay for Kojima” fuck off with that shit. If the game is good it must be there if it isn’t then it shouldn’t. As fucking simple as that

Imagine taking away something from a good game because of all that shit. Absurd

I have answered that question several times. He is the producer, he has direct or indirect control over them voting mechanism.

So 2018 God of War didn’t deserve it
In 2017 Breath of the Wild didn’t deserve it
In 2016 Overwatch didn’t deserve it and so on right?
None of those was my game of the year in any of the respective years. None of these have any particularly strong connection to the organiser, producer and moderator of the award that I am aware of. If you can make me aware of any such strong connection, then I would agree that the respective game should not have been nominated, let alone won the VGA.

So you wanna convince me that if Geoff had a strong connection with Corey Barlog or Nintendo then the people would accept neither God of War nor BotW being among the nominees right? Yeah, no. He would get eaten alive and we both know that very well bro
