PES series - "The Return of the King"

Not really getting the same vibe as a lot of the posts.

There's still some things that are really annoying on default settings. Passing in some cases for instance is inexcusably terrible how you can't track back to come to the ball & the player stays stuck on rail-like run animation. Is this a setting issue? Still need more time with passing to get the timing right, but the locked runs are awful. And the fact that the keeper throws the ball 3/4 of the way down the pitch.

It's a better game than it's previous editions (not saying much) but it's still not there for me after a few games. I will continue to play on in order to get down the timing aspects & adjustments to the style of play. I usually do enjoy PES for it's differences in comparison to FIFA, but as of right now, I've had a better experience right out of the gate with the FIFA 15 demo.

You seemed pretty negative about it before you even played it, so I am not surprised that you aren't impressed with the game, that's all.

Well I have put some time into the demo and it is indeed a fantastic return to form. It didn't floor me the way the Fifa demo did but the gameplay is just so damn solid that I might have to get both games this year. My poor wallet -_-.

I did? I'm getting both too, i like to alternate between the two anyways, and creating my own team on PES for ML is always fun.

I do prefer FIFA (again) but PES is solid enough that its gonna be fun to play year round

Depends on if the PS4 is allowing us to patch the Option File. If they do, it wont be a problem to get real players, names, kits, logos etc. into the game.

They better, that's a huge part of what makes PES enjoyable.
What's stopping it from happening right now?

Btw for those that have stuck to the series, are castello and miranda still in your default ML team? Remember miranda being a main feature in my team even after bringing in actual players. God i spent so many hours playing ML during the PS 2 days

Just played a couple of matches and overall I'd say it is a fairly impressive series update. However, it's not significantly better than FIFA in my opinion to justify sacrificing the licenses and game modes that FIFA can provide.

The negatives:
- Tad bit to fast gameplay. I hope there will be an option to slow down the game speed. But I guess its a very subjective thing.
It is subjective, like you said, but I feel that the speed is perfect this time. PES2014 was too slow imo.

- AI is agreesive but yet they dont or next to never use fouls, so set pieces are pretty rare. And the general feeling is that the AI sometimes plays undefendable attacks, but that is something subjective again.
That's hardly something new. The AI getting fouls against them hasn't been a thing since PES4 or something.

- UI and menus are simply hideous. It's time for Konami to finally pay someone who designs them a decent UI.
Yup, it's really bad. But somehow it was even worse last year. The menus in PES2014 were laggy as hell, so there is at least an improvement this year.

- Automated passing is still flawed. Sometimes when a teammate is close to you in good position to run into the opponents box, the pass you trigger goes to the teammate somewhere else.
Yup. I have no idea how they can get that wrong after so many games. It should be improved upon, not end up broken several games in a row.

- Lobbed through balls tend to work too well. Not as FIFA bad but sometimes cheap enough.
That's how it usually is in PES.

After a couple of games with both demos I'd say that at the moment, gameplay wise and visually, PES is in nearly every regard better. Of course, Lincences, Pro Clubs, FUT and all, but the core gameplay and the fun you get from the beautiful game, the built up, tactical depth, AI that challneges you... PES just nails them better.
I agree. I'd say that FIFA is not even close. FIFA is a game for those who want to feel like a super player without having any actual skills. They are just so damn boring imo.

anyone elses attackers exhausted by the 70 min mark?

It depends on the style of offensive play. If I try to build up and use passing play more than open space through balls asking them to sprint, they don't get tired. If I try to use their speed to go to the wings they are often tired around 60-70 mins. And I love it because it forces you to take some breaks and try to build up more calmly to rest the players.

But I've noticed that midfielders don't fatigue at the same rate. You can use sprint with a midfielder for the entire game and he will never get tired as a striker/winger. Weird.

Game is really starting to grow on me. I still think others are over hyping it/seeing things I'm not but we've got two great footy games this year. £37 from Amazon, not too shabby.

A couiple of more things:

When ball goes out and goalkeeper passes to a teammate, it goes way too slow. Goalkeeper even slows down before hitting the ball. Throw ins are good though.

When pressing right shoulder button to prepare for a placed shot, the player shouldn't slow down to snail speed. I want to walk normally with the ball when holding the shoulder button and place the shot. Fifa does this way better than PES.

And once again, the players you take the ball from fall into the air and forward way too often.

Those complaining about broken auto passes, use L2 when passing and you can do it 100% manually. You can use it when the keeper has the ball in his hands too, works great.

I don't mind the menus or UI in general, at least it's fast, i'm sick of the slugishnes in Fifa menus since the PS3 era.

My only reservation right now is how the online will run. I can live without FUT(never been a huge fan) and other Fifa modes if online leagues and friendlies run perfect. No more Konami id or whatever the fuck it is called please.

Played the demo last night.. about 10 games worth.

Maybe it is just because it is different than the seemingly clone copy of FIFA I am used to, but it felt fresh and enjoyable. The movement felt more intentional and dynamic vs fixed by explicit animations. I could anticipate the other team and actually interrupt passing lanes more easily and the ball felt more like.. well a ball. It didn't feel glued to players so much and bounced of guys naturally instead of like it got lassoed to their body to make a trap animation work.

I liked how the crowds looked a lot more, though I have to admit the overall graphics quality is a step back form FIFA and some guys kind of look strange. Overall I guess it just felt more normal and like real football.

I am curious how deep the game is and what it will lack compared to FIFA. Obviously it won't have as many modes, teams, stadiums, and (thankfully) ultimate team. At the same time I consider how many different teams I actually use in a game and it has to be less than 12.

I can't seem to find a complete features list for the game however, so I am wondering what teams will be in it, what leagues, what tournaments, will it have all real players or not, what modes will it have etc etc

pes has added their own version of ultimate team iirc

I'd be perfectly happy with the full Premier league and La Liga, i always stick to a couple of teams in Fifa, i'm thinking of making either Atletico or Man Utd my main teams. I can live without National teams as long as the online play is as good as Fifa, i mean the smoothnes and lag free aspect of it.

Besides the keeper these could all be down to settings. Go to side select and Personal Data, experiment with the Pass Support settings and the other ones (I think 'teammate control' is one which is on auto by default).

you won't get licensed EPL teams without option files

PS4 still doesn't have youtube uploading, but I'll figure something out.

It can't be as bad as getting goals off my PS2 memory card with Max Drive, copying them to the PC, converting them, playing them in the PC version while capturing with FRAPS, shrinking them down with RAD video, and finally making a video for upload with Windows Movie maker.

People complain about little things in PES 2015. But let's face it. If you start like this, you can also pick on many lil things in FIFA. The ballon baal physics. The comicy characters, the non existing midfield play. People like to blame PES because they did a lot of stupid stuff in recent years. PES 2015 is a legit improvement though. If you say "I dont like the presentation, so I play FIFA" I understand you. But if you start to complain about the gameplay (while thinking FIFA offers better) you are probably wrong.

Anyone else feel you have to adjust your TV to get any decent vibrancy or richness from this game on the wide camera view of the pitch ? It's always the same with Konami like they dont calibrate the colours and blacks like other games.

Black adboards and on Neuer's kit look like washed out Black not deep but more like dark grey. Also feels like the lighting is overdone - pitch looks too bright and washed out grey green.

Then when you check out the Replays up close it all looks brilliant and rich green grass and saturated colours but then back to wide cam and it looks to washed out and bright again.

This does not look like a Next Gen PS4 game except in it's smooth silky 60fps slow mo replays and cutscenes.

Grass also looks fuzzy and not impressed with shadows and lighting.

Recently picked up PES 2011 for £1.49 on amazon to play for a bit of a Footie fix on PS3 and that game has brillaint lighting and pitch textures for it's age . . . also looks more crisp and sharp than this.

PES 2015 has potential but I still reckon a Next gen blend of PES 2011 & 2013 would have been great . . . those 2 titles got a lot right and 'felt' good to play.

I would also personally bring back Seabass but just without the funny unlockable heads and wooden barrels for a ball.

The more I play, the more I like it. There are still some minor annoying stuff, but overall it's way better than PES2014. The worst part of the demo is the UI and I feel I can live with a shitty UI if the rest is good. The thing that might really break it is if they still have poorly balanced difficulties.

Exactly, we love to nitpick PES to death like Fifa is a perfect game.

how about penalties in FIFA? Most ridiculous design since PES 2009, or whatever was the one that was crap and you didnt know what were you doing.

I feel like this is a huge improvement over last year.

It's obviously not perfect but I enjoyed it a lot more than the FIFA demo. I would still prefer to get it on PC but I guess I'll have to wait and see how much worse that version looks. If OFs work on PS4 then I might stick with that version though.

Went in with the lowest expectations and ended up playing about 10 matches or so. Feels good man.

option files should work 100%... png's and mp3's might not... so maybe no logo's and custom chants in PS4 version.

Option Files don't work.

Which is also the reason I'm considering skipping PES this year for FIFA even though I'm having great fun with the demo.

You know what, I've just started playing the EA Access version of FIFA 15 and I must say that after playing the PES demo earlier today, I much prefer the actual gameplay of PES.

I have really loved the few games i've played. I'm not great at FIFA, so was happy that a few of the plays I set up actually worked out the way I intended with some beautiful goals. The character models sometimes look like they're wearing weird rubber body-suits (especially when they're shouting) but it's smooth and sharp with some great animations on the pitch.
I don't think my team (Arsenal) is licensed again though, and that's a really tough pill to swallow. I don't think it even has MLS, so I can't play as the local team either. I'll have to wait and see a finalized list of features and licenses before pre-ordering.
