Player's that don't use mics in MP centric games ruin them

I think if you're looking to 'excel' in a team based multiplayer game, you shouldn't be playing with randoms at all, with or without mics.

I only agree with this for ranked matches and games with heavy cooperation.

And I'm surprised at how many people are proud that they're ruining other people's ranked matches by not communicating. It's almost like being a griefer.

You guys realize you are the bad guys right?

Why people want to play these games without communication is baffling to me.

In my examples, I have a rip roaring time without comms. I just don't like speaking online. I find it awkward and I'm not a big fan of barking commands into a headset while playing a game.

The only thing worse than that was Tom Clancy's Endwar where I didn't even make it to the end of configuration before nope-ing out of it.

Blissful silence for me please.

RE: above comment about ranked

Have never played a game with that in. I probably wouldn't though either.

As a non native English speaker, using mic online is quite hard, usually it's easier to comprehend a non native English speaker, you guys (natives) use too much slang and talk way too bad when playing online. I'm in the army and I can follow orders issued via radio, but even in emergency situation I never heard someone talk so bad like in mp games.
I can follow movies and TV (most of them) in English but when playing online is near impossible to grasp what your saying.
I'm sure I'm the problem and luckily not everyone talk "bad" (speed, pronunciation, slang, etc) but usually it's a lot easier to hear a Swedish talk English than a native

I'm of two minds on this.

Nowadays, I don't want to communicate with randos anymore and I don't play in highly competitive (random group) modes anyway, I don't have the time to waste there.

On the other hand, I sometimes miss the earlier 360 XBL days (around Halo 3), where a majority of random players used mics by default. I don't miss the vocal minority of asshats you had to go in and manually mute back then, but it was nice to jump into a game and just naturally have people communicate.

That's true, at least in some cases.

Poor mic quality on the other side or background noise makes it even harder. Or too much japper or several people talking at once.

It's always been the opposite for me.

This. The first thing I do on Forza Horizon online is go in and mute all the mics. Because I don't want to hear a load of muffled speech, crackling noises and background fuzz when I'm playing. If everyone had GOOD mics, it might be different.

In Overwatch's case, playing on EU means you will end up with people speaking different languages. Kinda hard to use mic unless everyone is fluent in English.

And tbh, if I have come across some players trying to coordinate teamplay, I have met more angry kids swearing and shouting in their mic. So by default I usually turn the mic off.

Whenever I hear someone on the mic, it's always sounds like some dude calling out for a friend. I don't want to hear about how terrible the sandwich you ate before queuing up is, don't want to hear about you having finals the next day, don't want to hear about how you're 3-15 during a match and yet everyone else sucks. Sometimes some people are actually cool on the mic, but most of the time I mute their goofy ass.

I never knew that talking to people with different accents was so hard. I'm always playing with people from all over speaking broken English or barely any English. We can usually improvise things and it usually goes well enough for people to understand.

I usually have alot of funny moments trying to figure out what people mean and have made a decent number of friends that I randomly play with.

But I guess most people don't even wanna try.

I'd rather have fun and not "excel" at a game than have random people shout racial slurs, ethnic slurs, breath heavily, and be otherwise annoying. Maybe if reporting people actually did something, but it doesn't seem to do anything. So, blame those players and platform holders who just shrug their shoulders than us who are tired of this garbage.

Also, part of the problem is that mic users are usually the ones who think that "trash talk" is essential to competitive gaming, and those people suck as well.

Yeah, that's a big frustration to me as well. Recently was in a lobby with a guy with a clearly racist username (I don't want to type what it was on here...but it was bad). I reported it and PSN sent me back a boilerplate response saying there was nothing wrong with it at all and warned me about not 'abusing' the report function and that doing so risked sanctions.

So not only do I come out with little faith in Sony's moderation, I'm also worried about making reports in future in case it locks me out. Bullshit. The entire tone of their response prioritised not wasting their time with moderation requests they didn't want to deal with over making users feel like reporting toxic behaviour was welcomed.

It all sucks as I used to quite like in-game voice chat. Years back, I'd give it a few minutes at the start of a match or in a public area and see what's what and then mute if it was horrible. Now I just don't even bother.

It's all very well for people to say "go get some friends" at the OP and go in party chat but if you've got friends who broadly don't play competitive MP (or don't game at all), then public lobbies were often where you used to find people. I have online friends I 'met' in public voice/text chat who I still play online games with who are nice people - that's not something I could ever imagine doing now (outside of an MMO, maybe), sadly and I resent that. I do also feel frustrated playing competitive MP where teamwork is actively rewarded when people just take the piss. Though I don't feel like that's often a mic issue, just an attitude one - I can play a team based mode on mute if the objectives are relatively simple (particularly without some dick telling me what I am doing right/wrong) and frankly, even if I don't like someone else's playstyle, that's just the luck of the public lobby. If you want to take it SUPER SERIOUS, then go on a forum and find a clan or something. Compared to the past, there's little excuse in 2017 for not being able to find strangers who are into serious competitive gaming. The extra leg work sucks and it's not something I can be bothered with, but it's easy enough that you shouldn't have to rely on the public who, whatever I or anyone else thinks, can play as seriously or as carefree as they feel like.

And to echo what others have been saying, it's very easy to be frustrated when your core focus in online gaming is being able to collaborate and work as a team. For others, it's simply having an experience where they aren't relentlessly abused and discriminated against by strangers with mics.

Now, I just automatically mute or use party chat because the behaviour of other players on the mic is either bullying masquerading as tactics (i.e. complaining and barking orders and telling other players how shit they are), slurs, trolling or crackly background music and screaming at parents. Absolute shite.

Nah. No interest in talking or hearing randos scream at me for not playing my class in Overwatch, whilst also being completely wrong about what the purpose of my character actually is, and I end up getting 3 gold medals and a Play of the Game.

Being called racial slurs back when I had an accent in English was horrible, so I can't really blame people for not putting up with that shit. Muting stops being an option at some point because people have to annoy you first, and it kinda ruins your day to be talked to like that.

I don't really play much MP competitively and have only used a mic in a group with friends, but I get the feeling that "use a mic!" is a much easier thing to say if you're a straight white male.

I used to think that the "each game has to cater to me me me" crowd was the most entitled, but I was wrong. People who play team-based Multi Player and act like they are playing alone, those are.

Not sure what this has to do with mics. People on mics in games like Overwatch are frequently the people who think they're the hottest shit one man army and spend most of the time whining (or in some cases, literally screaming) because their team didn't follow them into a blatantly suicidal fight.

I had a lot of funny moments with non natives speaker as me but only if everyone is on the same mindset. Usually it just goes wrong as people tend to get annoyed too easy... I don't game for a living, i game because I love it, and after a long day at work I don't want to talk to angry kids or ignorant strangers.

having to play multiplayer games with horrible toxic players that have a mic ruins multiplayer games. I don't want to listen to them or talk to them. If it ruins my enjoyment I'm turning it off...I don't care if non participation in chat ruins the experience for you, there is a much larger problem as to why people aren't talking.

Communication is key in games like OW, Siege, etc.

Just another reason why I don't really play MP games where this makes a big difference. Not necessarily because I don't want to talk, but when people don't talk (or troll) it "ruins" the game, or should I say, puts you in a disadvantage.

Too many multiplayer centric games presume you've got a team of hardcore players all communicating and the game is built upon that premise, but its just not realistic or pragmatic to expect that.

As you also mentioned quick comms would help. I think in Counter Strike and Team Fortress Classic, you could make your own custom key comms. "Flag dropped" and bind it to the F keys or whatever.

That was a good solution tbh.

By default I mute everyone before the match even starts, so there's that.

Done that since the early XBL days.

Yep, not just because of how many assholes are out there, but because I got tired of hearing kids, mouth breathers wheeze into the mic nonstop, mics picking up people eating, or having to hear full conversations someone is having IRL

eventually I said fuck it and started disabling mics and muting everyone by default since it's easier than going through each time I catch an annoying person.

I don't really play competitive games at a high enough level where a mic is essential. The only exception I make is my WoW raid group but they are people I know pretty well and any annoying open mic shit gets called out.

That makes sense, I never thought about people gaming to relax after a long day of work. I have alot of free time outside of work so I guess that's why it's never really bothered me too much when people are angry or bad on the mic

Why not? People who are not in groups generally (assuming that the matchmaking isn't complete ass) do not get put against people in groups. And a game like Overwatch is completely different between the higher people on the ladder vs people playing pro in groups.

I've been playing competitive Overwatch and never find players talking, and i'm pretty close do Diamond. It's stupid not to talk.

i'd rather lose a ranked game than have to talk to randoms

discord + real friends is the way to go

That makes no sense. I hate players like you.

If you're not using a mic in Friday the 13th, what are you doing, really? You can't x-ray your way into everyone's inventory to see what they do/don't have for the objectives. Seems like the only thing you can do without a mic is just play randomly and simply run around with the goal of lucking into an escape.

It really depends on the game, but for F13, you are overall not going to be a positive addition to a counselor team if you don't have a microphone plugged in.

When devs put the effort in cleaning the trash from their games and people stop thinking that others should just get thicker skin when they are being berated or abused, the games become more welcoming and friendly so it encourages better communication. Fix that first.

Because if you want to 'excel' then relying on people you don't know, who are probably assholes, is just starting off on the wrong foot. His word was 'excel', not simply win or even simply have fun, but 'excel'. Not going to happen with a team of randoms where the lineup is probably changing from round to round even if everyone had mics and were communicating.

A lot of people who play games are selfish pussies who for some reason choose to ruin other people's competitive games instead of playing casual where they belong if they don't want to use a mic or take part in the team aspect of a team-based game.

They want the competition of ranked games without putting in the unwritten requirements of entry, that is having enough respect for the other people on your team to communicate with them and try to win. It's a very selfish mentality, but nothing you can do about it unfortunately.

Some people here are saying they don't use mics because other people are assholes, which I don't quite understand. You can mute them and still use your mic, doesn't really make sense but they need any excuse to justify their lazy cunty decisions.

Stay out of competitive anything if you have thin skin. You can be sensitive just don't bring down people who are trying to win.

There are a lot of reasons people do not want to use a mic, they might be in a house where echoes are important, have the pc in a room where other people live or work, or just be anxious/socially isolated and not want that kind of interaction. They might also want to avoid toxix behaviors that sometimes happen in mp games. The aggressivity/judgmental reactions iI read are indeed an incentive to no use a mic:/

I often find other players using the mic on Siege (X1), and I hate when they invite me to a party. Even if the other guys aren't talking, they can listen to us and be helped.

If noone's using the mic I still talk anyway, that helps winning games and I play comp to win.

I 100% agree.

Then again, I'll say that it's people not listening that is the main problem. I play a lot of RO2, Rising Storm and Rising Storm 2 and the main reason why teams lose is they don't listen to the commander. People may not want to talk, but as long as they listen there's communication involved. A team with communication is more likely to win.

For instance, join a team where nobody talks. If the other team is talking then they will win most likely.

1st, who said "doing well" translates to having fun? I play for enjoyment, not to keep score.

2nd, I have kids sleeping in the next room so I can't talk at night else they'll wake up and then no gaming for me. I always keep the voice channel open (unless players are toxic), listen and communicate just fine with in-game emotes (where available) or just plain chat.

3rd, if you feel that strongly about playerד "ruining" your experience without voice, get a steady gaming group that does.

Nah, i hate going online MP and having random people talk random nonsense. I prefer my quiet. I only talk and want to communicate if me and my friends are doing MP together.

I mean look at your post, why would I want to communicate with you in a game when you are so hostile even on a forum? Those people you are playing with are also trying to win, someone berating them is bringing them down. If you don't have the mental capacity to stay calm in competitive setting, please go play casual/quick match. Flaming your teammates isn't going to increase your chances of winning, it's the opposite. The one complaining and throwing insults is the biggest problem in the team and how they are able to work together to win.

mmmmm this is the kind of delicious impotent rage that i assume i am muting when losing ranked matches online

If this is how you talk to your teammates, you have no business whatsoever complaining that some people don't want to hop on voice chat.

I don't talk shit to anyone in-game, I only use mic's for callouts/strats.

If someone is talking shit to you, mute them. That doesn't excuse you ignoring basic duties of a ranked, competitive match. If you're afraid of other people that's fine just go to casual where winning/losing doesn't matter.

People have become more sheltered and socially awkward due to party chats and social media. The days where everyone had a mic in the general chat is long over . Sad but thats this generation for ya .

This. It's something nearly all of my friends are guilty of. I'd rather communicate with everyone over have better audio quality from my friends. The amount of new friends and varied social interactions I had on 360 and PS3 was vastly greater than what I have done on the PS4/XB1 and that's taking into account the fact that I play way less than when those consoles first came out.

I'd honestly rather deal with the toxicity and play with the world.

In 11 pages this sentiment has probably been expressed but imo it can't be expresssed enough.

Gamers in online competitive games are too top-loaded with toxic shit stains for me to bother. I tried for too long and my qol improved drastically when I turned all of that off.

Edit: and too be clear, my use of competitive as the opposite to co-operative, not in the sense that it is ranked. IMO if you are playing team based ranked game you shouldn't be played by with randos anyway.
