If it wasn't intended for consumers, then why sell it to them? Oh right, because it was intended for consumers.
Dude...developers in gaming and any graphical field. Your logic is dead.

too many assumptions, allan.
Competition is a great thing. Sony schooled them and they're winning now, but they have become complacent in their dominance. I'm not a warrior for either side; I simply want the best machines with the best games we can get. Nothing wrong with that
Before E3 2017, Kotaku: PS4 Trinity will be a 12TF machine announce soon, release fall 2018.

Once again, this is not competition. Do we really need to trot out those quotes again? Parity is not competition.
Good luck trying to get Titan X/GTX 1070 level performance in a $500 box with low TDP while not having a shit CPU.
"inb4" after 1,900 posts?INB4 no PS4 Neo this year, instead releasing next year with 8 TFLOPs
I wouldn't mind an external power brick for consoles, if that means they got thermal room to push speeds higher.I can't wait to see the size of the power brick on Scorpio.

Let's keep it 10x10 here; that is such a small part of the argument that it really doesn't matter. A system needs a lot more than just power to sell; it needs the games, the marketing, the brand power etc. This gets a 0% accuracy rating. There is no way in hell the PS4 would be doing so much better than the Xbox One had it not had the "it's more powerful" argument from day one.

I'm interested in how Sony will react to this. Playstation has the most to lose from all this- and if Scorpio is that much of a threat, they'd be wise to reconsider how Neo fits into the broader conversation of the console market. Perception is everything, and Sony has been intelligent on all fronts.
One thing is for sure, whoever leaked this information just gave Sony a ton of access to their number 1 competitor in the console space.

The difference is that Sony will be cannibalizing PS4 sales for a few months; Microsoft will be doing that for a year. If you're in the market for a PlayStation and want the best, you might wait until the 3rd or 4th quarter for the Neo. If you're in the market for the best Xbox, you may hold off for a year. That could be a substantial dip in Xbox sales for the next 12 months or so.
Not necessarily. Yes, the iterative model will spur competition more closely, but I feel like companies are going to still play sides for quite a while until one company emerges over the others the way the PS4 did. I see everyone in here ready to write off PS4K over a rumor about Scorpio, but let's be real. Why would anyone assume Sony would just let MS take the lead from them after all the work they've done to get to this point? The most powerful console isn't always the leader. I thought PS2 and Wii would have taught you guys if anything.
Well this isn't coming out until Fall 2017, long time price won't be that high...

That's... Not how this works. All 3 companies have laid out the same plan in the market going forward. Generations are dead, and they've been dead since the current crop of consoles have released. This isn't like a school yard fight where people react to eachother's stones. They already know which stones are littering the playground beforehand
How does Playstation have most to lose?
They are the market leader, with the global mindshare. MSFT has most to lose and prove with convincing current X1 mindshare, as well as new mindshare they are not dumping the X1 like a yesterday's news, etc.. Especially if this power gap is true over their current box.

I'm the customer you're describing. If the slim is cheap, I'll pounce on one in a heartbeat and catch up on some games I missed. If I'm looking for a Xbox in 2016 I'm looking at spending somewhere around $250 if not $199 around holiday time. I don't think that same customer is itching to spend $500-$600 on a new platform a year from now. XB1 this fall will be a slim 2TB machine with the ability to play XB1/XB360 games, tons of entertainment Apps, not to mention the update to windows 10 all for around $200+. Thats 64GB Apple TV, Nvidia Shield price range. I think there is a market for it.
Or because it was the cheapest one, not having bad first impressions like DRM, 24 hour internet connection requirement.

There's too much at stake for PlayStation to not react to this. Just because generations are dead doesn't necesarrily mean they can allow a competitior to have a significantly more powerful (4.2 vs 6 TF essentially a 30% power difference) to pass them by. There are bigger chess peices at play.
One thing is for certain is that Sony has developers both internally and externally that can give them feedback on how much of a hit they'll take in the performance game with Neo versus Scorpio. Neither company is asleep at the wheel.
Honestly I'd find it hard to believe that Sony wasn't expecting this/didn't already know. I don't think they'll rush a reaction to this, since they know that they can get the NEO's moving with the right marketing deals attached to it, and if they price the OG PS4 well, that'll keep selling as it is now. PS5, or whatever they plan to call it, will probably surface late 2018 or early 2019.
So the generations are 3 years long now? Go to hell MS.

In my opinion the biggest fear for PlayStation is having a newly spun narrative that Scorpio runs games at a much better fidelity than Neo- and have it run for >2 years before PS5. It's not about just being market leader, it's about mantaining that momentum, and you run the risk of losing users if the next Xbox suddenly trumps the PlayStation in power and launches in a simliar price point. But like I said earlier, Sony probably has engineers, programmers, and developers on tap to help re-evaluate the situation. A 30% different might not mean very much or it could mean a lot, Scorpio launching in 2017 could reinforce PlayStation's original plans for Neo in 2016 or it could change their vision of what the PS4K is.
If Neo launches in 2016, I hiiiiiiiiiighly doubt they'll produce another console in late 2018. At the earliest you should expect something in late 2019. Moreover, Sony/MS are beholden to AMD's roadmaps so these iterative console jumps might have to have some level of flexibility in timelines.
So the generations are 3 years long now? Go to hell MS.
And the Sony brand is more popular worldwide as well (people always forget this). That 360 year head start did not take long to shrink, regardless of the PS3 launch fuck up.

lol, how do you feel about the Neo?
It took a whole lot for Sony to equal out. It didnt all just worked out the way it did because of the strong "brand".
1). RROD fuck up definitely helped Sony
2). Free PSN while MS was making $60 per subscription
3). Took bigger hit per device (Bluray, wifi)
4). Pumped out best AAA first party games in last 5 years
the same for me, this just seems like a major stupid decision, one where both MS and sony are literally alienating all their early adopters and fans of their brand, in my honest opinion
I agree software is the most important part, but I also think third party titles and visual fidelity matters to a segment of the market. The more pressing matter for Sony is to do whatever it can to get within a ballpark of Scorpio where it can get ports at a competent fidelity level where most owners won't pine for the need to switch brands.Uhm...like I've been saying for ages now, power isn't the only factor here. People keep trumpeting that power is THE reason PS4 is outselling XBO, and that isn't true. PS4 is outselling it because it has the games people want to play, both 3rd party and exclusive. It has the online people want, and it's where their friends are. Marketing is also a big factor. It's not like Sony is used to having the most powerful system each hardware gen either, in fact this is the only one where they clearly have had that advantage. Every other gen they've had to rely on things other than power to pull people in, you think they're gonna forget all of that over the span of 3 years?
Whether Scorpio is more powerful than Neo really doesn't matter except for a sliver of tech-obsessed fanboys/fangirls. We're already at a point of diminishing returns in visual fidelity and an extra teraflop or two of raw processing power isn't going to make the difference between the two systems like SD to HD, not at the slightest. Things like artstyle are going to play a much bigger role and if Uncharted, R&C and Dreams are indicators, Sony has some of the best artists in the industry.
What Scorpio really needs is a software reason to make people take notice. XBO hasn't really flourished with a lot of in-house 1st party content, and MS has been notorious for using the same tentpole franchises over and over (like Nintendo, but without the nostalgia on their side).
They need to come strong on the software front w/ Scorpio and need to manage the PC versions of those releases very carefully; even if Scorpio ends up being more capable than any PC on the market at the time of its release that'll quickly cease to be the case and if all of Scorpio's exclusives are on PC that's a loss of a major incentive to get the platform for a decent chunk of people, particularly the early adopters.
