Yeah but they hadn't started the evil stuff yet. Being in power doesn't mean you're just automatically evil in unless you're Obama.

Wat?
Read some history of the Weimarian Republic.
The Nazis (or their far right supporters) did quite a lot of hits on communists, socialists and democrats as early as 1918/19.

Great, now I have to imagine a hessian woman dropping a bag of eggs and mumblinf angrily "Vielen dank, Hitler!".

To be fair, nobody liked the communists and they were in active, well you could say gangwars with the far right. But since nobody liked communist they got the bigger shit from the government. The Reichstagsbrand didn't help either.
They didn't had to do hits against socialists and christians, since they were losing trust hard since they couldn't counteract Versailles. They were mainly fighting the communists and that was ok. Nobody liked them.

Nobody liked jews either. Let's not forget that basically all of Europe hated jews at that time, they never had it easy in Europe. Everyone paddled back when they saw how far Germany went.

Before ww2 especially in the 1933s world politicians admired hilter as they knew nothing of his warped ideas and plans.

It's a shame the op couldn't come to that conclusion in the op. Bollocks story.

I think they *knew*, and a good many of them supported those ideas.

Given the british caricatures of he time they at least had an idea. Hitler was basically seen as danger and warmongerer, being shortly after WW1 didn't help. The allies just underestimated him and thought they could handle Germany easily. Of course, the whole holocaust is something nobody could've predict.

Yup a 6 year old read mein kampf.

Depends on what those ideas you are referring to? I said many politicians supported hilter he was a popular
Man. In 1933 the world did not know he was going to start a war and wipe out Slavs and Jews.

So no the British elite did not know and support those ideas.

Either ways this was so long time ago when she was a child, are they really that desperate for people to buy their magazines?

I'm not from the UK but in a previous thread on the palace renovations a debate broke out about the indoctrination of the British public in the greatness of the queen and the royal family and I must say most of the reactions in here seem to be knee jerk must protect the queen at all cost.

Did the article actually make up any facts? Do they not have a right to publish the pictures? What is actually wrong with the article beside existing?

Don't try and gloss over the evils of our politicians and élites back then. Their concerns were almost solely geopolitical rather than ethical; the preservation of the Empire and the prevention of a dominant force in Europe were paramount.

Yet another reason to abolish the monarchy. Britain's biggest benefit scroungers are self-entitled Nazi supporters. What a surprise. :3

Being completely serious now, there's a reason this has caused a bigger stink, and that has a lot to do with innuendo that the Royals might have been secretly rooting for Hitler through the war. I'm not sure I 100% believe that, but this kind of imagery doesn't help 'the firm'. But if it wasn't this, then it'd be something else. Regardless, they are long past their sell-by date and need to go. Britain needs an elected head of state.

For a second I thought the old lady had gone insane but as Usual it's just a headline.

That last part always annoys me. People didn't want to see it. Look back 30 years and you would have seen the first extermination events in modern time. The Herero people and Namaqua faced a similar situation where they where to be removed all together. No matter what means the colonial war machine had to use to do so.

What was the Queen Mother's excuse in the photo? Other than the copious amounts of gin she was probably imbibing.

In real terms, the excuse, if you want one, is that in 1933 the true level of danger Hitler posed wasn't plain at all and he was just another very charismatic, aggressive politician. The Nazi salute wasn't as it is now a symbol for evil, war and the suffering and persecution of millions, but a symbol of a powerful new and popular political movement in Germany.

To do the Nazi salute was a sign of respect for the German regime at the time - prior to much of the Nazis oppression and certainly prior to the war - the same way somebody might bow to a Japanese Prime Minister or whatever.

For instance, here's a picture of the England Football Team doing a Nazi Salute as a sign of respect before a 1938 football match against Germany - something that's far more egregious considering by 1938 (5 years after the queen footage) war was becoming more of an inevitability and the nazi party was at that point openly committing atrocities

The TLDR is really that in the context of the time this footage was taken the nazi salute was a relatively innocuous thing; the evils of Hitler's party hadn't come to light, he just seemed like a popular nutter who people wanted to respect because he'd managed to unite the crumbling Germany. Later, the truth became clear and was much more harrowing. Harry's going to a fancy dress party in the 2000s as a Nazi was obviously much more offensive for a wide variety of reasons.

Hard to imagine why the Royal Family would have ever supported an organization who's power was based on notions of genetic superiority.

again what has that got to do with a 6 year old salute or british politicians being a fan of hilter.

...? It just demonstrates that a good chunk of the Royal Family - many of whom our propaganda machines work overtime to portrait as decent people - are perfectly happy to support racist, anti-jewish, eugenicist ideology and frankly probably still do secretly.

Doing something against anything left wasn't considered bad by those in power, especially in USA. Its not really a surprise that people are barely aware what the Nazis did against them.

Hate on the Sun as much as you want (and there are plenty of reasons to do it), but this is still a priceless historical document.

Why? You can just look at a few years back for photos of Gaddafi with other world leaders, or heck, the eurogroup today with the hungarian president.
Context is what matters.

Edward VIII's views about Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party is very well documented and known, he even had meeting(s) with Hitler and used to do salutes. It's not surprising this would've rubbed off a young kid at her age (and she would've done it if instructed by Edward also), I doubt she truly knew the implications or significance at that age.

Because the Queen is an important figure of the last century and this video offers a window to the atmosphere of her upbringing.

Never has this been more fitting.

I think we can count on one hand the amount of people actively warning against Hitler in -33.

i guess that would depend on when he started rounding up Jews and sending people in Namibia to die in the desert of starvation and dehydration because the master knew what was best for the wold , being the most evolved and all.

Jesus, just read the BBC article about it. I knew Edward VIII was a Nazi loving shit but I didn't realise he visited Germany in '37 and tried to organise a peace favourable to the Nazis, and visited a freaking concentration camp in the process.

Really wouldn't be surprised if the whole Wallis Simpsom thing was a cover and he was forced to abdicate because of his views. We founded an entire religion once so the King could marry who he wanted.

Not just them. Daily Mail was Nazi propaganda back in 1933. They along with Daily Mirror supported fascists.

Lord Rothemere (owner of both papers at the time): "The minor misdeeds of individual Nazis would be submerged by the immense benefits the new regime is already bestowing upon Germany."

Exactly. If you want to start the Nazi sympathiser game, there's so many options to choose from pre-WWII.

Before ww2 especially in the 1933s world politicians admired hilter as they knew nothing of his warped ideas and plans.

They knew quite a few of them. They didn't think he'd go so extreme though, especially with the Holocaust.

Wow, never heard about that one. Having read about him in the past, I can't say I'm surprised.
