Rachael Dolezal claims she's jobless and on food stamps

She's Black Chinese. Meaning ethnically she is of African descent. Culturally and in terms of national identity and cultural identity she is Chinese. Race being so tied to ethnicity, she is Black. You can be any race and born in a different country and only ever live with that country's social and cultural norms. But you can't remove her African descent from her.

This. Just like I'm of African descent but I live in America and take part in American social norms and culture. We on every continent. Doesn't mean I'm Native American.

Gender is becoming more recognized as a social construct.

Skin color is something you're born with and cannot change.

Easy peasy. This is a woman living in a first world nation exercising her white privilege. All it is.

That makes me wonder, would trans-racialism become a thing if genetic modification for alteration of melanin levels became possible?

Have not thought about this lady since that news dropped the first time. Laughed so hard. Oh well some people will never learn.

Has she stopped making her hair that way and tanning? Or trying the keep the ruse alive.

I know what you're saying, but there's a little more to "race" than skin colour, though. I wouldn't likely be able to pass myself off as Scandinavian even if I had that treatment, or even a hair treatment on top of it.

No; no more than it has become a thing because of plastic surgery, bleaching, and all other manner of body-altering shit that's come about.

Transgender exists because every human being has the potential capability of displaying a multitude of physiological gender and sexual signifiers regardless of birth, and sometimes they don't always match.

Race is nothing but the arbitrary social classifications to discern between people with particular phenotypical and ancestral traits, of which humans do not have said potential capability of displaying regardless of birth because these things can only be directly passed down in the family line.

Take dogs. Any breed of dog can be male and female or have a mix of gender traits. However, a purebred dalmatian can't suddenly become a damn purebred corgi, even if it had the sapience to express the desire to really, really, really wanna be one.

The idea that she would alter her skin color just so that she could pass off as black and take part in what she thinks being black is, is ignorant, dishonest, kinda dubious, and just gross. Like, "oh I have this narrow minded view of what black people are, know what? I think I'm gonna play that role for a while."

I hope she can find safe ground for her and her family one day

I don't think there was any type of malice in what she did.

Yeah, you're right.

Talking down to people of color about perceptions of blackness while wearing a black costume isn't malicious at all. Certainly, she had the best of intentions.

Pretty sweet deal, she even gets her privilege while she's in her costume.

Humans can't sense their melanin levels in the same way that they can sense their physical makeup. Even if it became a widespread thing it still wouldn't be comparable.

It'll never be comparable. People only going out of their way to try to legitimize this silliness because it's a White person trying to be Black. I vehemently believe if it was the other way around no one would be taking this person as seriously.

Considering the shit Lil Kim and MJ get and they didn't even try to do this on purpose.

No doubt.

Maybe she just hasn't found the magic word that reveals her inner black woman?

I remember when this whole thing happened, there were a few people who were like "Let's hear her out, this trans-racial thing may be legit, no need for a witch hunt, she may actually believe she's a black woman."

That day gave me the biggest headache

The issue now is that she doesn't seem interested in budging from her position on the situation. Pride getting in the way of common sense, to her detriment. Hopefully she comes to terms at some point.

Insofar as no jobs...that means no jobs she feels like working of course. No doubt there are any number of menial type things she would have no issue landing. Saying she can't even get a grocery store clerk-level position is lol; they don't go searching through your net presence...gimme a break. More like, can you work a simple PoS? Are you a felon? She's gonna end up like Nikki from Hairspray

No bull, lol. Shit got me tight. Like "We really gonna sit here and act like this shit is ok to do to Black people?"

She's gonna end up like Nikki from Hairspray

Who?

Personally, she might be a shitty person (I don't really know enough about her case), but that everybody here is dismissing "transracial persons" as simply being crazy is somehow troubling to me and how I view NeoGAF normally.

Not crazy. Just wrong. Simply wrong. And offensive to the group they claim to be a part of.

You don't need to do something with malice to deserve scorn and consternation, she did a profoundly fucked up thing. The

Why am I left in suspense

Do black people have black brains, and white people have white brains?

I personally think the issue is a mountain out of a molehill. I mean she deceived so she face the consequences on that, but she seems to have offended some general liberal sensibility as well. On a personal level, I am politically pretty radical and mixed race, and I think this is more funny than offensive. In fact, I would question those that spend their offense on such a case as this...

Just to clarify, I think she should be called out on what she did, but the amount of hounding she has gotten for it seems disproportionate to me...I suppose it is because her situation makes her 'freak' of sorts.

It does seem she also did some good in her role...the deception hardly mitigates that.

She specifically used her position to prevent a Hispanic student from participating in a race/culture activity because she did not look Hispanic enough.

Okay... you have some kind of racial identification issues. You do what you did. Im not sure how I feel about it, but Id be willing to have a discussion.

But lying to people for years, and you still wont apologize? Cmon thats shitty as hell. And you want sympathy?

Jesus....
I feel sorry for this lady shocking what people have put her though and then trying to justify it with their bullshit reason, embarrassing really
Fucking....
Secondly, I have a huge problem with people assuming that transracism isn't a thing. It's very much still up for debate. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying you don't know, so stop pretending you do.

What you wrote is what I want to say, but I can't. Looking past the idiot that is Dolezal - I feel I have to concede my preconceived notions and accept that people can identify how they please and that principal doesn't stop at gender and sexual orientation. If someone genuinely believed themselves to be black and wasn't mimicking to mock I wouldn't have anything negative to say despite how negatively I personally feel.

^ So white people outright lying about their ancestry regardless of what people actually of that ancestry have to say about it is okay so long as they're not "malicious"?

Christ on a cracker, y'all let white people get away with every-fucking-thing.

It's an interesting situation. On one hand, that term might be acceptable in the scenario where a white child is raised by black parents in a black neighborhood/schools/etc from birth or whatever. The Steve Martin Jerk pics are a good example lol.

On the other, her situation seems more like a rebellious teenager that didn't like her parents core beliefs, and rebelled. Seemed like an outcast, maybe relating to the adopted African babies the fam took in, and it rolled from there. I dunno.

We a product of our environment, no?

Three problems with this:

-Any claim that this is comparable to being transgender is wrong, which is backed by a significant body of evidence supporting a biological origin. This is not. People need to stop drawing a comparison between the two.

-Transracialism is a thing, but there is little (if any) relationship between what Dolezal claims and actual transracialism, which sometimes occurs among adopted children who come to identify with their adoptive family's culture. By co-opting it, Dolezal is polluting the waters and making the term itself toxic.

-There is a huge double standard at play here, since it's something only a white person could get away with. The privilege is off the charts.

It seems to me like people are saying:

"Well if you're made up thing can exist, then this made up thing can exist too!"

I don't think people realize what they are saying here and about other people even in this thread. It sounds like bigotry.

As for this lady, what she did was horrible. She tried to game the system and misled a whole lot of people while leading a chapter of an organization for the advancement of colored people while doing blackface.

I don't want to see her on the streets though so hopefully she can find a job to eat.

"Sounds like?" It is outright bigotry.

It is extremely ignorant of transgender people's identities and experiences, meaning it is transphobic. It invades on black people's shared ancestry and culture in America of which white people are not entitled to by simply playing dress-up, meaning it is racist. It willfully ignores current science and tries to make an assertion on the basis of a hypothetical "well it -could- be true!" (because notice none of these niggas ever bring up a Google'd study or paper to try and add legitimacy to their claims, because it's not actually about proving anything), making it anti-science.

And all of this is happening under the guise of being a good little understanding "progressive" and trying to have an "open mind", which does nothing but position them as victims of an unreasonable opposition. This dumb shit is what alienates minorities from white allies and makes us look like fucking idiots to the anti-PC crowd.

Real talk, Rachel Dolezal stans get the fuck on my nerves. All of y'all need to just go away and watch some fucking anime or some shit.

It blew up because every new piece of information about her life that came out painted a clearer picture of her as a crazy asshole.

She tried to sue a historically black college for racial discrimination because she was white. That's where I think her story actually began. This crazy broad tried to remake the plot to Soul Man.
