Toy Story 2?

This must be a joke. It's the worst Pixar movie I've seen. I'm pretty sure they were forced to make it

Strangely enough, it has 100% positive reviews and everyone holds it in high regard. It's been years since I've seen it, but I don't understand it either. It contains Star Wars puns for God's sake.

You kidding me? Tonari no Totoro is only a few levels better than Henshin de Kaizen, one of the best Japanese films of ALL TIME. uncultured morons.

Most people couldn't make a decent top 10 list of the best jazz albums but I wouldn't call them uncultured.

Grave of The Fireflies isn't really that great. People only talk about it because it's depressing.
What.The.Fuck.

I think it's the exact opposite of what you're saying. It's gets a bad reputation (if for any reason) due to being animated and of such serious nature. I'd love to know how this movie is lesser than any of the other movies on the list. Critically speaking, it's shits all over everything, and I don't care if it's not fun for the whole family.

Roger Ebert said:
"Grave of the Fireflies" is an emotional experience so powerful that it forces a rethinking of animation. Since the earliest days, most animated films have been "cartoons" for children and families. Recent animated features such as "The Lion King," "Princess Mononoke" and "The Iron Giant" have touched on more serious themes, and the "Toy Story" movies and classics like "Bambi" have had moments that moved some audience members to tears. But these films exist within safe confines; they inspire tears, but not grief. "Grave of the Fireflies" is a powerful dramatic film that happens to be animated, and I know what the critic Ernest Rister means when he compares it to "Schindler's List" and says, "It is the most profoundly human animated film I've ever seen."

...

Yes, it's a cartoon, and the kids have eyes like saucers, but it belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made.

Also, does anyone else absolutely LOATHE Wallace and Gromit? Do those movies have any semblence of a plot/story at all?

Anyone who hates on Pixar must have no soul.

Especially those that hate on Pixar and then praise The Lion King, Aladin, etc.

Can someone explain why CHICKEN RUN is so high? Seriously, that's the worst part of the entire list.
Really? I've never heard Chicken Run hate before. I forgot to mention it earlier, but it's one of my favorites. In my top 10 animiated films.

I would like to see a Disney-centralized version of this list. They're too historically rooted in animation to compile a "fair" list with other non-Disney flicks.

There are four films on there that I've been meaning to watch... Persepolis, Pripika, Triplets of Belleville, and Akira. I guess I know what I'm doing tonight. Any opinions on which ones are better out of those? I'll probably only rent/buy two for now.

Late, but Akira can change lives.

Ummm, where's Tonari no Totoro ? Isn't one of those titles that should always be on thses lists ?
What I was about to say. All 'top' lists are kind of pointless but without Totoro, this one is ridiculous.

I'm missing a lot of movies that I've seen, but here are what my animated film rankings look like from criticker:
rankings.png

Subtract the animated shorts, and you get a decent idea of what my top 10 would be.

edit: wow, I haven't ranked many Pixar movies at all. I better get on that.

Consistently scoring movies is pretty darn tough. I find myself revising scores weeks or months after the fact. For example, Space Jam should be at least a 90 and Shrek 2's about 50 points too high. I gave Wall-E a 95 when it came out, but upon watching ET with my little cousins I went back and check its score -- I gave ET a 90. ET > Wall-E, so they swapped scores.

Ratatouille and chicken run are too high. Aladdin and lion king are too low.
Peter pan? Plenty of old ones I'd take higher.

Oh and where is Cars 2? lol

Take those out and you already have a better list. I haven't seen James and the Giant Peach in years and years, is it really that good? It hardly even gets talked about.

It's an excellent adaptation of the book. Great atmosphere and use of stop-motion (it starts live action and then becomes stop-motion animation).

I don't talk about things or decide what is good or bad by other peoples standards. I watch a movie and decide later if i like it or not. On my list this would be on the first ten.

Oh just shut up :p

i love you.

i hope this is a serious post, because i had the same reaction to it. i was relatively unimpressed, especially considering the tidal wave of hype that washes over me each time someone brings it up.

and complaining about disney's dominance of the list is like complaining about a list of top twenty professional basketball moments containing a lot of michael jordan and larry bird.

I also don't like Grave that much. People on her say it makes them cry and talk about how "human" the whole thing is, but it wasn't altogether very impacting to me. The whole movie actually felt pretty clumsy. I think a lot of the love it gets here is correlated with the amount of Japanophiles there are on the board and their almost creepy obsession with Japanese culture.

I still wanna see a Disney list. I think they have 50+ movies that could be considered masterpieces, but I dunno. Even if they don't, it'd be neat to see.

You know, I just watched Toy Story 2 because of this list. And while not really, really great it was actually pretty good (until the last third of the movie that is, and the ending, ugh).

It has some great concepts in there but I felt that it never really followed through on any of them... fun to watch though, I'd probably rate it up there with The Incredibles, but nowhere near the top spot.

I'm with the camp that isn't all impressed by Graves of the Fireflies. It's a propaganda film designed to make people emotional and sympathetic about the Japanese during World War II. I understand the main characters are innocent civilians, but I just have a tough time sympathizing them after Japan's atrocities in WWII.

...wait wait Iron Giant, Nightmare Before Christmas and 101 Dalmations got beat out by Who framed roger rabbit and chicken run....wtf??? Lion King doesnt even make the top 10? I didnt look at all 50 but im guessing they didnt include foreign films not one anime in the top 10 i can think of some that are better than chicken run and WFRR....Heavy Metal better be on there.

Wow, where the hell did all this Pixar hate come from :lol

Ok, personally, I wouldn't put any 3D Dreamworks films in there, because they are all awful. The list is very western, lack of a lot of Japanese animations.

Tonari no Totoro is awesome, but I thought the mini sequel was a fuck loads better, just pure awesome.

And since when did people hate Toy Story 2 O_O???

Yeah but Toy Story > Toy Story 2...

Wall-E is not better than NEMO, seriously.

Otherwise, pretty great list. Though Akira is easily top 20, unless they watched the HORRID redub that was released in 2000.
