RTX 4090 review thread

To summarize,

- They indeed over engineered the cooling for presumably higher power draw from Samsung, switching to TSMC is the best thing about this generation, and really it means that AMD was playing against a "handicapped" Nvidia cards last generation.

- 4k/120FPS is finally here. We have arrived. Glorious stuff.

- 1440p/300FPS+ is here which means we can finally take advantage of those ultra fast monitors coming out. Glorious stuff. Especially exciting for people like me who enjoy fast paced first person shooter games. Pro players would love this card. How much of this is diminishing returns on actual gameplay... who knows.

- Absolutely no reason to buy this if you are fine playing non RT games at 1440p/60

RDR2, Cyberpunk
I tested Cyberpunk in the same place as DF on the same settings (1440 ultra RT) with my 2080Ti.
4090 - 84fps
3090 - 45fps
2080Ti - 25fps

So yeah, pretty substantial upgrade.

Of course, if I enable DLSS performance, then I get fairly close to 60fps.

And isnt the "legacy code" of this engine is the same as the destiny 1 2 engine ?

How can you say it isnt Legacy code causing issues?
They basically used interrupts to inject new code in between legacy code at runtime.
Reworking that engine not taking the Xbox One into account really is the only way to get Halo Infinte or whatever comes next using that engine to run legit well on the CPU.

Saying its the "same engine" is incredibly reductive and almost certainly means you clearly dont actually understand the differences between the engines.
Bungie has a talk/paper on their multithreading, when you compare the two approaches clearly they arent "the same engine".

It bottlenecks a 5800x3d at anything below 4k

Is this why then we see strange results with Linus' benchmarks (7950X) of Cyberpunk 2077 versus say, techspot (5800X3d)

Linus got 136 FPS at ultra settings while techspot got 83 fps at high settings. WTF

Seems like this card is a 4k monster, it probably needs DDR5 and even beyond Zen 4 to really flex. What a crazy card.

A Youtuber i watch was basically getting around twice the performance over his 3080ti -



Also not sure what those Flight Sim results were earlier in the thread but he gets around 130fps at 4k ultra over Manhattan (its towarrds the end of the vid).

At what point have you changed enough of an engine that you no longer call it the same engine.
Considering 343 and Bungie went completely different routes with the engine its way too reductive to say they are the same engine just because they share some legacy code.
SlipSpace and Bungies engine arent the same engine.
 
Not if it increases input lag too.

The massive increase in fps versus the small increase in latency is worth it for graphic heavy games ala Cyberpunk 2077 with RT.

+55% in framerates for 11.6ms penalty... uh yes please? I wish i had that on Ampere. At least it's an option you can opt in or out, but i would totally take it for cyberpunk 2077. I would not use the frame generation for games which are already >144 fps.

CPU bound 1080p results is what they were.

This card is CPU bound up to 1440p.

You couldn't buy one even if you did. Nvidia have gimped and overpriced the "4080s" so badly, all 3 cards now serve the same market (i.e the super high end). The 4090 is going to outsell both 4080s combined 10x over, but they're going to be producing 10x fewer of them based on faulty historically sales data of similarly priced Titan class cards that only offered 10% advantages for 2x the cost. 4090s will be sold out for months while the "4080s" rot on shelves.

Mad card but There's nothing worth having one of these for at the moment and especially with the energy crisis at the moment. It stinks that we need a new PSU for these too.

I wonder if Nvidia got together with the PSU manufacturers to fuck us twice.

At the moment, the 6900XT is going for $660 and the RTX 3090 is going for $1000, which brings these cards' cost-per-frame down by 33%.
The 6900XT is now $8.12 per frame and the RTX3090 is $11.90.

Why are they comparing release MSRP to 2 year-old graphics cards?
 
I just can't help but feel slightly disappointed.

I get why everybody's going nuts over the insane numbers but I just can't ignore the fact that Rich also said "Oh by the way, if you don't have a super high refresh rate display, you'll have screen tearing with DLSS 3.0 and stutter/higher latency if you use vsync through Control Panel".

I mean what the hell? Maybe I'm missing a point (and if I do, feel free to educate me, I'm by no mean an expert) but my idea of owning a high end GPU is to play at 4K with smooth/locked fps (60/120) with max settings and max RT. What's the point of having an insane amount of frame if it creates tearing on your screen and might produce stutter and latency when you try to cap it?

Rich said he hopes DLSS 3.0 will improve specially with locked frame-rate and I do too but let's not forget that DLSS 3.0 is one of the main selling point used by Nvidia to justify the price tag. If I was dropping close to 2k on a card, I'd expect the new tech to produce a smooth experience on my current setup. I'm sure they'll iron things out with time but still...

at first I was $660... that's impossible, but then I looked on amazon.. amazing price for that card

Its actually cpu bound in some games at 4k too if you watch that vid, he has a 5900x too!.
Crazy card.
All of these games are basically designed around PS3 era CPUs. They hardly push any destruction or physics or high number of NPCs etc. The CPU is all used for rendering higher FPS which is more engine bound than anything. So many games simply dont max out every thread on the CPU.

I would be curious to see how this GPU performs on next gen games like Matrix and Avatar.
 
Fuck, am I too naive in thinking that a i5 13600 would be enough with a 4090, in a new build, to play at 4k 120hz?

DLSS 3.0 is only available on a few games. The vast majority of games are running at insane framerates at native 4k. No need for DLSS 3.0.

As someone who sat through DLSS 1.0 revisions, I have no doubt they will iron out these things fast. Nvidia drivers come out on a regular monthly if not biweekly basis.

Those are still the current MSRP. For example the 6800XT is already at the latest cut that AMD did.
Now if some shops are discounting these GPUs a bit further, that is another matter.

I guess you're right, DLSS 3.0 is not widely implemented yet and will be improved over time so it's not a big issue. Still slightly disapointed, specially for the upcoming 4080, 4060, etc...

I was already running Matrix at native 4k 45 fps on my 3080. Its poorly optimized on the CPU side but I dont see why Matrix couldnt run at around 100 FPS on this card.

Cyberpunk got a new RT patch with full path traced lighting and way higher quality shadows. Current gen GPUs cant even run it. Its only for 4000 series cards designed around their tensor cores. I suspect the older version of the RT would run very well on DLSS 2.2.

So they extracted ONE!!! freaking frame of worst case scenario? Omg, it's game over for DLSS.

I think it's important to show that DLSS isnt the GODLY miracle device other people make it out to be. The whole point of spending thousands of dollars in a card is to have the premium experience and if DLSS is interfering it with it a little bit then its no longer premium. These are not 3060s or even mid range GPUs like the 3070s which are bought by the masses who are willing to make compromises for a smooth 60 fps.

I know this is considered useless, but did the reviews try 8k at 60fps? Especially on the Samsung QLED 8k TV's with VRR
 
Impressive performance but still no. Too much expensive, big, noisy (I guess) and consume too much power.

Keeping my prehistoric gen 970 and 1070, going back to my cave.

I know your pain and suffering. my 6800xt has coil whine and it is pretty bad. My first card ever that had it THAT bad. Funny enough, my laptop 1070 has coil whine too but I rarely ever play anything on it that would actually push that nastiness.

I had a 3090 FE that had some atrocious coil whine, worst I've ever heard. I'll wait to see what the community finds before deciding which one (if any) I'll go with.
 
Every time I've used DLSS in games, it simply makes the games look worse. Is it just me or do people not notice it? Its bad to the point that I just neve ruse it, it's always disabled.
