RTX 4090 review thread

The massive increase in fps versus the small increase in latency is worth it for graphic heavy games ala Cyberpunk 2077 with RT.

+55% in framerates for 11.6ms penalty... uh yes please? I wish i had that on Ampere. At least it's an option you can opt in or out, but i would totally take it for cyberpunk 2077. I would not use the frame generation for games which are already >144 fps.

Since 2.0 it's been proven to actually improve IQ in multiple scenarios, especially when using the quality setting.
 
Besides playing any game in 4k 160hz with max settings is a different game even if its a console hand me down game
This point will NEVER get across to some people. It's 100% the reason I fully moved over to PC gaming while the PS5 barely gets used. The best version of a game, often times by a wide stretch is routinely exclusive to pc. I also enjoy replaying the PS ports on PC cause as you said it always feels like I'm experiencing a game I loved all over again due to the improvements.

It's really not, though. It's an improvement, sure, but the difference is really pretty minimal, especially in comparison to past gens.

It was one thing during the PS3/360 era, when games were 720p (or lower, ugh) and barely 30fps. Then, a moderate PC (still more than the cost of a console, but not too much more) would net you a significant jump.
  • 720p => 1080p, especially due to the lower quality of AA at the time, makes a huge difference in image quality.
  • Obviously, going from 30fps => 60fps is also transformative.
  • Beyond resolution and framerate, games often had noticeably improved higher end graphics options for PC: physx, shadows/AO, higher res textures, etc.
Today though, PS5 and Xbox SX already get you 4k (or close) and 60fps in pretty much every game. The higher the baseline gets, the less noticeable any further jump is.
  • Even if the game is only 1440p on console, the difference between 1440p and 4k is much smaller than 720p => 1080p. Depending on the quality of the AA, it's honestly almost imperceptible on my 65" TV from my couch.
  • 60fps => 120fps is half the improvement in frametime as 30 => 60. It's better, sure, but it's just not that different in most games.
  • It seems like 90% of games don't even have any extra graphical options at all for PC any more.
So to have any real improvement, you need a system that can do 4k or higher at 120fps at max settings, which is going to be multiple thousands of dollars - five or more times as much as a console - for less and less meaningful improvements.

And that's completely ignoring all the issues and headaches you'll run into on PC: shader compilation stutter, vsync/fullscreen/HDR issues, settings not staying set, no rest mode/quick resume... those are the real reason I'm sick of PCs.

So yes, if you don't care about the things the consoles can do that PCs can't (quickly jumping in and out of rest mode), and you don't mind or miraculously avoid the numerous bugs and issues, you can definitely get some improvements. The "it's a different game" rhetoric is just a bit silly - it's a nice, fairly minor improvement.

Now, as the gen goes on, if games start running at 30fps again and/or closer to 1080p - then I completely agree. :D

So nobody notices the blurriness it's just me, how? It's so apparent. I play shooters mostly where looking around quickly to scan my environment, in these games it's just awful. Maybe in single player slow games where you're not turning fast constantly it's not big deal but man does it suck in shooters.

It's not just you. DLSS can introduce ghosting, artifacts, blurring, etc. Some games implement DLSS really well, others don't. The F1 games and Warzone are two examples of games I can't play with DLSS enabled. Others, such as Cyberpunk are fine.

But that's not really a response.

You don't need dlss3 now, but what about 2-3-4-5 years from now? do you seriously think that you are gonna do 4k60 (let alone 120) + rtx on every game for the next 5 years without dlss?

Control average 69 frames at 4k with rtx without dlss, a game from like 3 years ago and not even open world, and broken\heavy games are gonna be released like they always do since forever, even just because they are bad ports without introducing any advanced graphical feature.

Is what the user says true in some form? i'm interested in what he ask because i aim for locked 60 frames, i don't like to have dancing framerate, even with a g-sync panel.

I'm open to be educated, i'm not exactly Einstein with this stuff.

You couldn't buy one even if you did. Nvidia have gimped and overpriced the "4080s" so badly, all 3 cards now serve the same market (i.e the super high end). The 4090 is going to outsell both 4080s combined 10x over, but they're going to be producing 10x fewer of them based on faulty historically sales data of similarly priced Titan class cards that only offered 10% advantages for 2x the cost. 4090s will be sold out for months while the "4080s" rot on shelves.

I typically go with Quality but Quality at 1440p looked worse than Performance at 4k in Cyberpunk.

With a 2070super i can't be so picky, so sometimes i have to use balanced and performance.

Yeah in cyberpunk 4k is the way to go even with performance, 1800p if you are in a pinch (like me).

It's disappointing to have to settle for DLSS performance. Not gonna lie. I put off playing cyberpunk on my 2080 because i didnt like the 30-35 fps performance i was getting on dlss quality at 1440p with RT maxed out. But once I got the 3080, 4k was just such a big upgrade over 1440p that I simply decided to downgrade to DLSS Performance and turned down RT lighting from Psycho to Quality. Like I spent close to $1000 only to downgrade settings lol and i still only average 50 fps which is fine since my tv supports gsync but still.

This is why i'm not gonna go with anything behind a 6900 or 3090 for the next gpu, hopefully amd is gonna offer a valid alternative to the 4080 16gb for less than 1000 euros.

You said so much but all you did is downplay the improvements and flexibility by playing on PC and give a subjective opinion that it's not worth it to you which honestly in the end is fine. Also you are painting with a really broad brush with your "analysis". All your points could be true depending on what exact game we are discussing but also entirely wrong if we do so with another game, but in most cases the differences are stark. The typical side by side image comparison may not seem like some major upgrade and it's a terrible way to try and comprehend the benefits of gaming on a high end PC, I myself built my first gaming PC 3 years ago after playing Destiny 2 on a friends PC, a game I had nearly 2k hours and within an hour of playing it on PC I was already making a list of parts. Also when you say that consoles get close to 4k/60fps in most games you are forgetting to notate that developers achieve this by making quite a few concessions to the overall game. On PC this is again typically not an issue, especially with the new hardware releasing both now and the always evolving options whereas consoles for a minimum of 3-4 years are always restrained to their current specs and by default already outdated at the time of launch.

Is it worth building what now seems to be a $2,000+ PC to play every single game @ max settings in 4k with high refresh rates, obviously no, but like polls you'll get wildly different results depending on the group of people you ask. It is 100% subjective and for someone like me who is now 38 and played on consoles my entire life, PC honestly got me back into gaming after feeling really lackluster moving into this current gen. I still platinumed Demon Souls on PS5 when it came out and it was a good experience. But like every other game I have either played for the first time or replayed on PC if it ever releases on PC I'll be there day 1 to play the much improved version in ultrawide with mod support and improvements just like I have done so many other games.

Also if you truly have that many issues as you listed as far as common PC operation then I agree you should stick to consoles.

This card is stupidly expensive but it will go on sale....I'll be picking up mine on discount so I'm lucky but damn this thing on a pure performance level destroys everything before it. I feel comfortable that whatever comes along that's truly next gen will run well on this card and be worth it.

These 4nm chips are helping them hit almost 3.0 Ghz in a freaking GPU. Not to mention putting 76 BILLION transistors in one chip while keeping power consumption lower than last gen models. For reference, PS5 GPU is around 10 billion transistors.

A 10 tflops chip on this node could probably have around a 50-75 watt tdp. Too much for handhelds but 5 tflops is definitely possible.

It sucks that Nintendo seems to be going with 1.3 tflops chip which is basically equivalent to an x1 in performance. DLSS might help but i dont think it will make a big difference.

Ive seen 3090 Tis go for $999. They will crash the day 4090 cards come out. Unless there is another shortage, you should be able to buy these cards for $999 by holiday season next year.

Yep, if people can hold out it's gonna drop in price. I've got an amazing two years out of my msi 3080 gaming trio x that I paid 719 for on launch day. I've been offered 500 for it. Will mean I'm dropping like 1k probs on this 4090 I can deal with that for over double the performance of my 3080 and 24gb of video ram.

Won't have to think about my PC again for atleast 2 to 3 years.

I've found it looks okay when there's little movement onscreen, and I think that's what analysts like Digital Foundry do when they're taking pictures and saying "Look! 1080p DLSS'd to 4K is as good as 4K Native!"

But you notice more of the fuzziness when things get moving. My 1440p Cyberpunk with DLSS looks about like 1080p during gameplay, imo

I work in the PC gaming industry. Out of principal i couldnt do it. Miners made my life misery for 2 years. Not knocking anyone's hustle but I couldn't do it knowing what it was doing to my industry, the business I hold a high position in and ultimately how it stripped fellow gamers of the ability to aquire decent hardware at fair prices.

Not enough for me, I'll wait for the RTX 4090Ti. Playing Games at 4K/200fps I could manipulate the Time, like in Deadpool 2 :D

Yeah, 2.7 Ghz is quite impressive for a GPU this big.

Nah its not just you! For example when i fly,let say an airbus A321 in microsoft Flight sim, the instrument movements gets all blurry. This is a known problem with DLSS in flightsim, so its there and i choose to go with TAA until it goes away. Im using a 3070 btw.

I salute you darthkarki darthkarki ! Well said!! People's perspective are so out of whack these days. They want to talk about "massive" differences when a game is 1620p vs 1800p? Right...Not everyone either A) has the money/resources, or B) care about pushing graphics further than 4K/60fps. Ada is well ahead of it's time and it is a card designed to handle heavy RT loads and future path traced games. That's coming...but in the here and now it's just overkill for 99% of games (4K/120+ is literally <1% of gamers today). I love how Richard from Digital Foundry put it in their review: Ada is for the next generation of the next generation that we haven't even reached yet :messenger_beaming: . Let's catch up to what the next gen consoles and UE5 is designed to offer first and then we'll worry about hitting full RT/PT games in the next decade.

Sorry but playing games at 4k 160 fps with ultra settings is a huge difference than what my PS5 is doing

And maybe I am in the 1% of gamers who want to push graphics and frames to the max but I enjoy it

I have an Aorus Master 3090 and my current cables are 1cm away from the glass in my Lian Li O11 Dynamic XL.

This thing is wider than that and those cables are gonna get bent.

Spending $10,000 every few years on a new rig and not thinking that's outrageous is a pretty privileged position to be in. By all means, do what you want, you earned the money and have every right to spend it but lets not act like you aren't part of the 1% of pc users playing videogames. I think its cool, tbh. Cyberpunk looks gorgeous when I run it in DLSS Quality setting with everything turned up to 11 on my RTX 3080

I justify it because I do 3D rendering and a card like the 4090 helps me produce work faster. At least, this is what I tell myself as I realize I've spent all evening playing Flight Sim 2020 instead of producing.

What's especially tough here: the 7900 series looks like it's shaping up to be a beast, so that means two builds this year.

Its crazy expensive and I'm questioning if it will be worth the investment. Next gen PC games and how they run on RTX 3000 series cards will determine if I'm going to be parting with a kidney for one of these RTX 4000 series cards.

Right now Cyberpunk is already pushing my RTX 3080 on ultra at 1440p. Then again I have a ton of mods installed on top of the base game so surely that must be eating some valuable frames too 😂

You do not need 4K screen to enjoy benefits of 4K res. I have been playing on my 2013 panny plasma in 4K via downsampling since 2016. I would totally use 4090 even on my screen in games like Cyberpunk with RT.
 
Its crazy expensive and I'm questioning if it will be worth the investment. Next gen PC games and how they run on RTX 3000 series cards will determine if I'm going to be parting with a kidney for one of these RTX 4000 series cards.

Right now Cyberpunk is already pushing my RTX 3080 on ultra at 1440p. Then again I have a ton of mods installed on top of the base game so surely that must be eating some valuable frames too 😂

I think you'll be fine with a 30 series for awhile. Is there any title on the horizon that you're worried about?
