Bebpo, I'm buying this game. If it sucks I'm going to kick you in the balls the next time I see you.

Good deal! Be sure to tell the other JPN Gaffers that the game comes with a "gauranteed to be good or you can kick Bebpo in the future" warranty as well. :p

Ok, I've played 1 hour of this game and... it's AWESOME. I was born only to play this game. The feeeling you get when playing is the one you get from masterpieces. I agree with Bebpo in all he has said so far. Texture detail is really great sometimes, I love the character's animations and modelling, and I think the choice for the camerawork is really elegant and functional. I can't write more 'cause I'm at work (really busy day), but trust me, if you usually watch and like yakuza's movies, import this game, it's a pleasure to play.

Well done SEGA, finally a AAA+ original game. I predicted the famitsu score perfectly after seeing videos, but after playing a little bit of it, I think it should have scored even higher :)

This is driving me nuts hearing how good the game is and yet we still have no announcments of it being released anywhere out of Japan. Come on Sega for once dont blow it and release this game everywhere!

Played some more last night.. now I've finished Chapter 7.
In chapter 7, you get to hang out with Haruka, and depends on what you do, you can earn her trust - which basically means you feed her well whenever she wants to get someting in certain stores (Damn, she can eat for sure - she had 2 whole bowls of Gyudons, 2 sets of Hamberger and french fries, pieces of pies and caramel mochaccino, etc) - and keep her entertained. When her trust level goes up, she will reward you at each level with various items that are important to her. It starts out with rather silly things, but some things are actually quite useful, that Haruka's Necklace - it adds 15 points of DEF points - which is more than Bulletproof jacket. ;)

I also had quite some laugh when she asks for near impossible things - that in one case, she asks to hit 20 homeruns in Major-league class batting practice. (it gives you 20 balls, so you have to be GOD to hit all that...) or even asking you to earn 3000 medals in slot machine. (It's not imposssible, but takes quite some time to do so.)

Also, there are around 5 specific Haruka related sub-quests in chapter 7 only. One with the dice gambling, another with boxer-yakuza mixup, third one with the strange guy in the secret casino underneath the ramen store (he gives you 10,000,000 yen in a brief case, and runs away - Haruka asks to double it before he returns. ;)), the sick boy event which actually has started in chapter 5, concludes in this chapter too. Lastly, rather funny event where Kiryu and Haruka tries to save a man's live who's heart-broken and tries to jump himself off the roof of a high-rise building.

I've currently finished 51 sub-events and logged in around 30 hours already. It's been a long time since I've been so into a game like this - and the story itself is getting better as well. The end of chapter 7, you finally get to meet your childhood buddy... and what a shocker. I had to turn off the game when I finished chapter 7, becase it was getting too late (3am) - but all night and all morning I've been thinking what might happen in next chapter. ;)

It's safe to say that the game is not import friendly - and ones who cannot follow heavy japanese script should stay away till it gets localized - but being able to understand (even in my limited knowledge of Japanese) what's going on in original format, it's very special. I really do hope that they would a good job translating (there are so much little nuances that makes the script tick... and I just hope they would do good job translating in english... and voice overs.

As for my urge for sub-event has gone down a bit - but the story itself and its elevating mood is not letting me go. A definitely awesome game.

edit: Apparently I hear that the game is selling quite well in Japan - that it's selling out at retail stores - more than Sega had anticipated in first place. Limited distribution is scheduled this week, and 2nd big shipment will follow next week is what I've read... Finally, a good news for Sega. ;)

As I progress in the game (15 hours or so for me) I like it more and more. I'm starting to really appreciate the sense of place they've infused the game with; it just feels so real. It's one of the most memorable RPG overworlds ever, at the very least. Some of the interior locations are incredible, and are really "filmed" well with the camera angles they set up for many of them.

I am still having a lot of fun in the random combats even though I've clocked in several dozens of such battles. As you gain more levels you really start dishing the beatings out with even more brutality and, well, the violence is just plain fun.

It's a special game. There's already been a few videogame moments I won't forget, many happening during epic fights, and that kind of fun is what we all play games for.

It's also pretty cool to see that Sega still has some of that old magic left, as we haven't had any AAA titles from them in quite a while. This is certainly one of them.

Well, although it's reported to sell above Sega's own expectation, I think we should reserve the possibility that Sega actually thought the game will bomb and only shiped like... 50,000 - 100,000 copies to retailer.

Anyhow, Sega could use another steady seller. Word-of-mouth must be taking its place quite well.

Just completed Chapter 8, 9 and 10 last night.

Now I am convinced that Kiryu is the baddest ass yakuza ever graced a videogame.

Chapter 8 was shorter than I expected, but chapter 9 and 10 - just so action filled.
I could have taken my time on chapter 10, but the urgency of situation itself just didn't allow me to really FEEL free to walk around (you can, if you'd like). It's like a non-stop story progression with lots of action - so it was quite hard to do anything in side-track. It's quite compelling.. and I almost hd to go ahead and finished chapter 10, hoping that I will get some free roaming time in chapter 11. Man, whole chapter 10 was pretty emotional, with very interesting twist which I haven't really anticipated. Also this chapter 9 and 10 are definitely like Shenmue II's Yellow Head bldg kinda experience. Good stuff. Also, these 3 chapters also assured me that, this game, while very humanist in it's approach - but its really dark and gritty... and somehow almost mindbogglingly realistic in some way.

In chapter 11, some new stuff's are available to keep things fresh, and I am also happy that there are plenty of bad guys just running at me on the street too. ;) Since I've cleared a lot of events, I had somewhat lonely roaming time searching for whatever event there might be - and in this chapter, it seems like there's some bad guys waiting for me to bump into them in almost every corner.

Right now, I've probably logged in around 35+ hours, and I've cleared about 65 of sub-events - and as it seems like there are some more to be found and finished - as I had to let go of my controller in Chapter 11 when I finished roaming for missing events on upper third of the map.

Also, I'm not sure whether it was there before, but in Chapter 10, a new place opens up. A massage parlor, where a big-breasted girl in Langerie massages you for peace of mind. I mean, a real peace of mind - that it's quite funny. Sleeping baby, whoa! Finish the massage without falling a sleep, you get... a mantra-ish picture. LOL. Some of the ambiguous suggest in this game are quite amusing. ;)

Yeah, I really wish I had spent the time and done more things. It's the kind of game that would've been even more satisfying had I spent 30 hours exploring the world, rather than 15 hours rushing through the main story.

I think I'm going to try to make time to do a 2nd play of the game in the next month or two and do as much as I can this time around.

PS. Yellowace, first impressions? Yay or Nay?

Currently logged in about 40 hours, and found 69 events and 68 of them cleared... but I hear there are more than 75 events, so I guess I still need to find few more. Only thing is, from today I get very limited playing time - so I'll probably wont finish the game till after 28th. (My mother in law comes in town, which means no videogame playing for me. :() Perhaps I could squeeze in a few hours on weekend when my wife and mother-in-law goes shopping... ;)

About 4 more hours into this game - I'm still at chapter 11. Not because I'm stuck - but more of exploring. Only thing is, that in this chapter, there are thugs virtually in every corner, so it's getting to my nerves. I kinda regret that I didn't do the event searching in Chapter 10. :( I don't really mind battling - but they keep regenerate - so it's kinda annoying when I try to get to certain place. Due to the frequency of battles (which you can certainly avoid by out-running them, or take a route where they can't see you) - the loading is once again little bothersome. However, unless you are a determined to find all the events, this shouldn't be much problem, because the distance you have to go to do in main storywise, you can get away with just a couple of battles.

However, thanks to the all the events, my character is now all maxed out in terms of levels - the last upgrade in combo is quite fun. To this late stage, I'm finding something new in battles and places, which is a good thing. The action has become quite stylish when fighting against weaker foes, it's quite amusing. ;) My favorite combo for now is counter attack with circle, when stunned circle-circle-triangle-circle throw combo you learn at level 10 - then heat gauge stomp. A lot of damage + very stylish too. :)

I also hear that after finishing the game, you get a "Premium box" for 2nd time playing - don't exactly know what it does, though... I wonder what it might be?

lachesis

edit: according to 2ch, there's a hidden boss when you clear 78 missions, and learned all the skills - called "last assassin", which is tough as hell. Whoa. I'm not sure I can get 100% in all of them - I might probably wait till some FAQ comes up in terms of perfect-clearing the game - but it's good to know that there's something to dig for long long time. :)

Well, I was able to play about few more hours today.

Finished Chapter 11, and 12 - and now I'm on last chapter, 13. Currently about 43 hours into, cleared about 69 events (and to be honest, I'm a bit stuck, in terms of events) - and about 3-4 coin locker keys missing, out of 50. you collect these throughout the game, and when you open corresponding coin-locker, which usually includes some rare items.

Chapter 11 and 12 is more or less continuation from 8-9-10's nonstop action. I am yet to head to the final show-down stage in chapter 13 - I just want to wrap up as much as possible at this point, buying in expensive swords/guns/recovery items.

Also, I was able to get to the final tournament of fighting arena which become available from Chapter 6. When you check back, new tourneys in different kind of fighting (some involving only with weapons, some with no limtation, some no throw allowed, etc) - and it gets progressively harder and harder. The final tournament, called Magnum Force GP.. and the final match up of that tourney.. whoa. The guy is near impossible to beat - and I can't help myself keep trying to beet him. So far, I was able to get his HP down to 55-60% - and like Mokujin in Tekken, he changes his stance/fighting style as his HP goes down. So far, I've seen 3 styles - first starting with Crane style of fighting (like Karate Kid) - then Boxing with some fancy footwork - to Muetai, Thailand kickboxing. Since every 1/3 of HP meter he loses, he changes the stance - so I think I would probabl see 3 more style of fighting stance. Boy, the guy is tough, and I thought the game was relatively easy in most cases - but certain places or events, (like getting SSS rank getting Haruka's trust level) - is quite hard, if not impossible. :(

I haven't seen the missionn "last assasin" yet - and I'm not sure how hard he can be - becase I should be able to use my best weapons, and recovery items, and armor.... but of course, I could be very wrong. There are some difficulty peaks here and there - that it's not gradual increase in difficulty, in some ways. I thought some of the bosses were way too hard, and some too easy.

I have given a second thought - that I might give the game a 2nd try with "premium box" which comes out after completing first play through to achieve 100% level. Perhaps someone would come up with a nice FAQ when I do. ;)

Anyhow, I'll try to keep posting my impressions in this thread as I go on... (although no-one seem to read it. ;)) - if this game ever gets localized, I am willing to buy it all over again just to enjoy the story and detail in 100%.

.. then again, they might have some issues of child slaping on the cheek in this game, especially by the good guys. (Not as un-forgivable displine method in Japan, I guess.)

I have to know. Do you get to ask around for "Chinese people?"

Nope. And the places that you normally have to go, is highlighted on the map itself, so mostly you won't get lost nor have to ask anyone to find out where it is.

There not as obvious tasks to find something - but it's pretty obvious and you can talk and figure out yourself in general direction - say you are to rescue someone who's injured, you can follow the blood-trail on the road and ask people around the blood trail, gossiping - and they'l give you the direction. You can, though, just go to the place you need to get to w/o asking any questions in general.

So, obviously, no Sailor searching, nor chinese searching. At one point you do get to meet chinese mobs in Yokohama (where there's huge Chinatown in Japan - another city near by Tokyo bay) - and it's all action, no real adventuring. ;)

Trust me, the pacing of this game is quite impeccable. It just knows when to give you a breathing room, and when to tighten up the all the action.

That's good to hear. It sounds like they learned quite a bit, took notes and made some great decisions. I'm looking forward to this.

Don't know if this has already been covered, but what does the game's title mean?

It means..."like a dragon" or "dragon-like".
NCSX calls it Way of Dragon or something like that - Not sure how SOA would name it when they bring it over here.. (hope they would do so.)

You know, I've never understood this particularly criticism about Shenmue, regarding being unable to find certain people easily. If you have a shred of common sense it was easy as fuck to follow the junior-level clues in the game. There's a lot of negatives people have for the game that I can understand, but that one's never made any sense...I reckon people who got stuck are simply fucking idiots.[/rant]

Anyway this game sounds hot...obviously the closest I'm gonna get to a new Shenmue. I'm really looking forward to it.

I think you will like this game alot, Shin. ;) I also understand what you mean - that you certainly don't have to ask everyone for the same question, as once you've asked a couple, you will get the clue to get there.

There are, although a couple of times you do have to ask or back-track here and there - but it's alot simpler.

As for Klee - here's the previous thread regarding some videos.

Well, I'm not the one who said this is better than MGS3, at least :) - but so far, I am enjoying this very much, if not more than MGS3. Still I think Game of the year belongs to RE4, but this one cuts quite close to it. One very well made action-adventure game to say the least... but if the story only counts, I think this one towers over pretty much everything. It's a cliche'd story in a way, but how they presented and how compelling it is - it's quite awesome, and at the same time, moving.

A word of warning though - this is a very Japanese heavy game - I've seen people giving up not understanding. Wait till you get a faq or translation - or wait for the localization. So far, I understand what they are saying around 30-40% with subtitles turned on - but the visuals are actually filling in the gap quite nicely, so I know exactly what's going on in general.

Yeah, I'm still only a little over half done with it, but I wouldn't put it over MGS3. Then again, MGS3 didn't become game-of-generation for me until I played it all the way through, so who knows, the same thing could happen here.

As per the storywise - things start to go crazy somewhere around chapter 8 - 9, and you realize that you are in the middle of a deep, convoluted struggle between power and greed. I haven't seen the ending yet, and enjoying the freedom before the last battle - but storywise, it has engrossed me quite a lot. ;) Hope you'd like it too.

Just finished the fight inside the Host Club in Chapter 2. The game is okay. It's better than Shit Muu, but I don't see the "GOTG" crap yet. Battles are fucking fun, but too short and a little clumsy. Enviroments are awesome but I don't feel like exploring tonight. Storywriting and really top class and cutscenes are really well directed. What this game needs is a) more shit to do, b) longer battles with larger enviroments and more challenge, c) more moves, d) hot chicks. Yeah. Chapter 1 was "pretty good" but hardly GOTG. :D

That's pretty much what I thought in Chapter 1 and 2... but you are in for a ride. Well, the real game starts at Chapter 4, where things are not as linear, and whole lot of things to do - and you can really begin the 78+(possibly) sub-quests, and collecting 50 of coin locker keys, and a full blown Casino coplete with BJ, Baraka, Roullette. (Wish poker was there, though. :()

Also, as you upgrade yourself - Mind/Technic/Body - you gain some serious bad-ass combos, plus you will quickly get used to rather loose lock-on system using upgraded Sway system.

I just bet the finished the Final tournament in fighting arena which is available in final chapter 13. The boss of that final tournament was quite hard - as all you can do is block/counter against this guy, and it took me near 20-30 min to beat. ;) Now, seeking for more sub-quests...

a) - I wrote some stuff in my post above ... There are shitload of stuff to do besides the game itself. Batting Practice isn't actually too bad - I thought it was a push-over, but I got kinda addicted to it. At one point, Haruka asks you to hit all 20 homeruns in Majorleager class cage (The one on the left being the easiest - to the right most one is "Alien Class").

b) some battles will last quite long - say 10 - 20 min in hordes of them. 1 vs 10-15 or more isn't that rare in this game. I think you will meet your first long-battle soon enough, as I'm trying to not to spoil anything, but sometimes the battle takes in multi arenas and multi-floors. Some guys will have weapons like guns and swords, knives etc, and you will get to meet different types of fighters from Boxers, regular small fighters, larger brutes, Muetai fighters, Kung-Fu fighters, gunners, and the ones specialize in sword play, etc. You are mostly in the Kamuro-cho area in most of the time - but in some cases, you do get to branch out (Chapter 3 and 9, I think) to other places other than Kamuro-Cho. Most battles are relatively easy - but there are some tough ones you can face in certain events/places. The last assasin sub-quest is one thing (I haven't seen him yet) - but the last tournament in fighting area, the boss is pretty tough.

c) upgrade your character, and learn from Jotaro, a master you can visit from Chapter 5 - you will learn quite a few moves. In the mean time, you might want to play with various Heat-gauge attacks - my fav is actually the one with Bike when they are down. You slam the bike on top of them and jump on it. ;)

d) hot chicks. You can visit the Kyabakuras, and talk to girls there. (all 6). Once they fall in love with you, (Their heart gauge at 10 at the point you are leaving them) - they'll call you up and have "after meeting", which usually means going to the love-hotel in a pink flash. (literally) - but all of the "afters", they do have some backstory which are rather good, how they ended up in Kyabakura, etc. I actually recommend people doing so - because each girl you conquer, you get 3000 exp points, which is a considerable amount to upgrade your character. Also, complete the sub-story in Chapter 5 or so, you will get the free-pass to Asia - a strip club. Chapter 10 allows you to go to the Massage Palor where a half naked girl massages you till you see the mantra. (whaterver it means.).. and how can I forget the sub-quest called "The price of F-Cup"? :lol Loved that event, and boy, wasn't she really equipped. ;)

Believe me, things get better starting Chapter 4, and story gets even better starting Chapter 7-8 and on... and at one point, there's also car chase scene, where certain other sega gun-shooter style minigame is included. ;) I was also pretty surprised how linear first few chapters were, and kinda let down by the beginning of Chapter 3 - but Later parts of Chapter 3 and suddenly boom - chapter 4 opened up the whole area to visit at your leisure, I was literally hooked. ;)

Whatever I wrote above is actually true. (Why would I lie?) It's a shame that you would have to put KH2 over this one though. :D

Anyhow, I'm about to wrap up my first run - as I can't seem to unlock some of the sub-events, and I've pretty much done anything I wanted to in main game - So far, I've unlocked 69 Sub-events, and 46 coin locker keys. I'm thinking of giving the game in 2nd run in Adventure Review mode, (not sure what it exactly does, but I do know it's available after finishing the game). Since I cannot play the game in my living room with 5.1 ch audio and large screen but a measly headphone and smaller 23 inch computer monitor in my room, I was trying to hold off seeing the ending (My mother in law's in town, so I'm not playing games in livingroom but only in my room after she goes to bed) - but I guess I'll be seeing the ending tonight... and will write up some more impression afterwards.

Ok I'm in the middle of Chapter Four doing the dog mission. Finished two or three sub missions in the chapter so far (
the strip club one with Yuuya and the seduction/spiked drink one. Not sure if the one outside the burger joint counts, where you beat up the Yakuza collecting protection money.
) and HOLY SHIT my impressions of the game has gone up like triple-fold.

The only issue that holds the game back from true GAME OF THE GENERATION would be the inconsistant presentation (some scenes look really bad while most are really polished and awesome) and the consistant loading (load times are short but there are too many of them). Gameplay-wise the camera could be better and the auto-lockout could be slightly more intuitive but otherwise the game nails everything you want from a Yakuza sim spot on.

I heard about Reiko the ex-race queen (or was it Reika ^^;) from the weird guy on the street who's her fan and I went to request for her at the host club. Man the entire series of dialogue options and the feel of you being in a host club being entertained by a girl is awesome, and the detail is perfect right down to how you feel the pinch only when the final bill comes. :lol

I have to say though, if Sega releases this in the US there's NO WAY IN HELL they'll release it without edits. Honestly, Sega is the most wussy company out there when it comes to content in America, and I can't see them releasing a game like this uncut. Not only the is dialogue and writing very adult-orientated, but the violence and brutality far surpasses what I feel about GTA and RE games in general. This is serious Yakuza-movie level violence which doesn't show a ton of gore but is realistic and brutal down enough to make you feel "ouch" everytime something happens. :D

Edit: Oh and I forgot to mention, Chapter 3's battle "stage" was so fucking awesome I had to reload the game after beating it and just play it AGAIN to try out other shit I could do. :lol

This thread got me interested so I went and watched some gameplay videos at Gamespot. My conclusion is that it looks like the game desperately needs a target lock on button.

Huh, this game sounds pretty sweet...I hope Sega releases it overseas. They better if they want to soften the bomblow, anyway. :p
