playing now - finally.

1) i can't believe how freaking great this looks - i mean, not sure if anyone else as mentioned it, but this really captures the "in Japan" thing so awesomely. The character models move and lip synch very well indeed.

2) the music , ambient sound, etc - it all rocks.

3) the fights look brutal and are FUN

I'm about 10 hours in (middle of Chapter 7), I'll write up more impressions once I finish, but basically THIS GAME FUCKING ROCKS CITY BLOCKS

Alright, I'm sold. You can announce a U.S. release date now, Sega. I'll buy it.* Promise.

*Eventually.

I'll put down money on a goddamn pre-order if they just announce the damn thing. And I never pre-order anything!

hmm just an update since this thread is still alive.

Sega of Japan put up the "Master of Fighting" (really bad translation but trying to fit the meaning) clip on the official website.

If you are still in doubt of the battle system of this game, just watch this clip.

http://www.ryu-ga-gotoku.com/

Click 5th button from the left at the bottom of the page (battle), and go to page 7, not counting the left most menu button.

I'd give a direct link but the site is completely in flash.

The website takes forever to load ;_;

*edit: finally got it working. So many fond memories in that video. Love the stabbing someone in the stomach with a broken beer bottle attack :) There were a few things in there I never tried myself like the strangling the guy with a rope/stick. Makes me really want to replay it sometime this year. What was the 2nd weapon he used in the video? It looked like a long fencing sword or something?

I'm glad more people are playing and enjoying the game now. I want to do a thread about Ryu's themes/storyline analysis, etc but I'm going to wait till a few more people are done so there can be actual discussion instead of it simply being an empty spoiler thread. :lol

now that everyone agrees this game rocks, who is gonna hold up SEGA so that they bring this shizzle to the USA?

i'd be fearful of what would happen to the voice acting to be quite honest. Perhaps a sub'ed version rather than Shenmue style voice acting? (yeah, i know elitist jgaf wanker blah blah blah)

And can we have some more raving about the graphics in this game? the game looks CRAZY. So much detail in everything! It's fantastic.

The problem isn't "elitist jgaf wanker", but "SCEA policy". :(

Yes the game does look CRAZY in attention to detail, motion capture, textures, expressions, etc. BUT as you play on you will realize that the graphics are hardly the high point of the game. The kickass intense action, the emotionally well-written storyline, excellent sidequests and minigames, etc make the game one of the best this generation. :D

oh but of course. I'm just surprised there isn't more "jesus look at it as well!" comments! :)

i'm sitting here watching people just walking down the street - it looks amazing.

just talked to one of the "working girls" too

just on chapter 4.

I really hope this game gets subs as well as a dub--in most cases, that's just j-wankery--the world of FFXII and other RPGs are neither here nor there in English or Japanese, and KH2 actually will be much improved with English Voice acting--but Ryu ga Gotoku is set in real, modern Japan with real, modern Japanese people. It's an utterly realistic modern yakuza crime drama and dubbing it into English would make as much sense as watching a dub of a Beat Takeshi film or Chinese martial arts drama. Which I guess some people DO, but come on. There's an obvious reason to make an exception to the "must dub" rule--THIS GAME IS SET IN MODERN JAPAN.

rant rant.

How would you guys say this game compares to Shenmue?

Also if you don't know Japanese is it worth importing?

Please qualify your comparisons with Shenmue, by letting us know if you liked either game. (Since both were pretty bad, this will help me a lot)

And some completely unrelated questions for you...

Who wants to play a game of lucky hit?

Would you like to play a game of lucky hit?

How about a game of lucky hit?

It doesn't. It takes Shenmue and everything people had to bitch about the game and wipes the floor with it.

P.S. I hated Shenmue.

Also if you don't know Japanese is it worth importing?

No, don't waste your money. Wait for JackFrost to fulfill his HOLY MISSION! :lol

looking at your avatar, Ryu:Shenmue::Butthead:Beavis

if Shenmue had been like this, Sega wouldn't have had to go third-party.

it has all the parts people like about Shenmue (immersive, detailed world; fun VF-inspired combat) while getting rid of the parts people didn't (weak-willed main character, having to do stupid jobs). It's basically River City Ransom on the PS2, with awesome combat and fun sidequests. The homeless man teaches you secret fighting techniques! There's an underground illegal arena and casino! You can buy designer handbags for hostesses and then meet up at love hotels! In Ryu ga Gotoku, when you need some money you BEAT UP SOME YAKUZA and extort it. YEAH!

You must have missed my billion other raves about the game where I said the graphics rock. Tons of detail and some of the most realistic Japanese people I've seen depicted in video games. I think they did a great work on the facial textures of all the story characters and the clothing designs on everyone from drunken salarymen on the street to the homeless guy in the park are all really diverse and realistic looking.

So I take it I'm safe right? :p

"Hmmm... something smells like overhype."
this game has one thread of love - it's nowhere near overhype yet!

the game is just out and out awesome so far, and i'm only scratching the surface.

It was just a whif of overhype, maybe it was barbeque instead. But come on, you have to have a LITTLE apprehension when someone tells you this is the best thing Sega's done since Nights. (which right now, is still JSRF)

hey, who made JSR and JSRF?

oh it's the director of Ryu ga Gotoku! what a coincidence!

I think the biggest difference when it is all said and done is that between Shenmue and Ryu ga Gotoku.....

Ryu ga Gotoku actually has an ending! :lol

Doesn't SCEA have a rule where it's either dub and subs or dub only? In other words, a game cannot have subtitles only?

Edit: sales question answered thanks to Famitsu Top 100 thread

I really don't see this game working with a dub. It really need the perfect voice acting to do it justice.

I don't even know how they would give it justice.

I mean remember when you meet the one host guy(forgot the name) outside of Stardust and have to fight him? That whole scene where he yells at you was just funny as hell. I laughed for a good while.

all the trash talking that preceeds any beat down would indeed be hard to convey...

but, here is a small photo essay for those sitting on the fence...

Shenmue, menspoo - here is true playboy life Kiriu style!

87305757_0b6ef475a3.jpg

After a hard day beating up Yakuza members, there's nothing better than hanging around in the local combini buying oden and thumbing the softporn mags on the shelf.
87305281_4ef1629e52.jpg

with the "blood pumping" it's out onto the street to go blimping the school girls whilst avoiding arrest...
87304784_6cade9f5d1.jpg

now totally fired up and ready to rock, it's off to one of the hostess bars to chat to the lovely ladies.... and now for the finale...
87304894_21ff922671.jpg

Looking for sailors? PAH. That's for little boys, Kiriu is all about cottaging with homeless guys. Pearl necklaces all round.

ah forgive my ignorance.

I just assumed :
桐 kiri
+
生 u
=
kiriu

weird - if i type in kiriu i get 桐生 but not with kiryu.

Anyways, not that it really matters - game still kicks coq.

tell yourself that this game sucks. remember your promise to bebpo!

The Shenmue comparisons are understandable but Ryu Ga Gotoku is more about kicking ass than collecting shit, so beware Shenmue-lovers. You can play mini-games, collect and explore, but it's not as in-depth as Shenmue (like being able to observe items in 3D, play games at home, listen to music, etc. ).

It's not GOTG - but it definitely has the best story and pacing I have ever seen in a video game. Sick presentation.

edit: Does anyone know if the fighting system is similar to SpikeOut?

Dave Long

I think in the Edge preview it said that the game's fighting system used a lot of what was in Spikeout. I have Spikeout: Battle Street for the X, but not Ryu Ga Gotoku so I can't make the comparison.

HERE COMES THE BOSS!

I have to agree that Ryu ga gotoku has far more action than Shenmue - and it was a good shenmue fix for me. However, while Ryu ga gotoku really kicks ass hard - but I still have soft spots for Shenmue as well. I think if Shenmue had more action - people might have thought a bit different - but the pacing was a bit irregular. For example, Shenmue II's disc 3 had a good pacing of action and storytelling at the same time. Ryu ga gotoku, the entire pacing is very similar to Shenmue II disc3 imho. A very good thing - but it is a different game. More I play Ryu ga gotoku, I miss Shenmue... really.
