Since When Has American Culture Become So Mediocre and Pathetic? What happened to ABBA, Bowie, The Beatles, PSY, BTS, and other great American bands?

Holy fuck, did the political forum circa 2020 election crash through a wormhole into OT? This thread is giving me PTSD flashbacks. Where's the dude who wanted to nail Hilary Clinton? Where's Taysan? BY GOD, HOW IS SEATTLE DOING?!

Who produced the Labyrinth? Hollywood!
Who f*cking invented Rock? You Yanks!

Does that non-important lapsus on my part really take away form the central premise of this thread?

Yes because David Bowie would be nothing without that movie ...... he was a hugely successful artist before and after that movie.

And yes when you clearly mention artists that are not American or hell even from English speaking countries that does take away from your argument a little bit.

Also the biggest blockbusters in the world have been and still are American movies and all around the world American entertainment is huge.

this thread is bizarre and pathetic.
times change and so do culture and business.
if you can't find incredibly talented and inspiring artists and cultural figures then you're looking in the wrong places.
Or they just aren’t around.

My god, I've given a dozen examples and got two of them wrong due to a small lapse of reason. The first because I just wanted something to start with an A that goes with Zappa, the second was just an honest mistake. It happens. Feel free to laugh at my expense, I can deal with the ridicule but what's regrettable is that it is used as a means to circumvent an issue that I care greatly about. You guys apparently never get something wrong in the heat of the moment. I swear this place tends to be f*ckin pedantic in all the wrong places sometimes.

What I don't appreciate though is the backhanded title change only to sh*t on something that I honestly wanted to talk about.
EviLore EviLore if you don't like this thread just say so right out and nuke it. At least my commentary was genuine and certainly not any worse than the dozens of astroturfed threads or lazily copy/pasted PR tweets that gest posted everyday on here. I'm sure the thread about pussy exorcisms is doing gangbusters compared to mine.

For those who resonated with this thread, thank you very much for the insightful replies and adding to the subject instead of stomping like gleeful little children on a small honest mistake.

Heat of the moment? You weren’t exactly on a time limit when posting. You could’ve taken your time to come up with a reasonable argument that has some sense of logic to it, instead you posted…this.

Ah yes, more pedantry and word mincing to take away from what I've tried to convey.

Also I put enough time into this compared to the usual banter on here.

The weird thing is I have never met anyone in my life who are the way people are on Social Media with it's puritanical demands.
Same, but I’ve met an endless stream of the people who whine constantly about those “puritans”.

I think it's just a joke dude. I saw the title change and had a solid chuckle while drinking my morning coffee. Nothing more. Not even a full gut laugh at your expense.

Rock’n’Roll and blue jeans have been replaced by kafkaesque social theories. That’s now America’s big cultural export. But unlike Elvis and Levi’s, critical race theory and queer studies don’t have quite the same universal appeal. Which is a pretty big deal, considering American culture was just as crucial to winning the Cold War as the size of it’s military or the number of nukes it possessed.

Don't worry, man. You made a legendary thread. Next week someone else will and you'll get to giggle with the rest of us. You started some people's weekend off with a smile on their faces: nothing wrong with that.

If you insist, I will laugh.

Pedantic, dude? I'm still 60% convinced this is a really good troll thread. Like half of those things weren't American at all.

AMERICA USED TO STAND FOR THINGS. WHERE'S THE PROUD ERA OF BIG BEN AND THE COLISEUM LIKE IN THE 1920'S?!?!

This was a bad thread, saved by the generous souls who have ribbed you until you're bruised. Thank them. America beats a lot of the other shit holes in the world. Most developed nations do. The fact that you can bitch about it online instead of struggling for your life should be proof enough that things don't suck as much as you'd like to make yourself believe.

If it's just down to personal tastes in things like music, film, and other consumable media, then like...that's not a matter of things going downhill, that's a matter of you getting older. We aren't the target demographic for things anymore unless it's a reunion tour, a sequel, a reboot or a remake. Our time has passed. The flash in the pan is contrasted by the ever-black. The Dark Winter, indeed.

It’s been 5 pages. At some point get over it
But I don’t want to get over it. I want to sit here and laugh all day/week/month/year at the strained mentality that OP has displayed and continues to display. How can someone be so deluded to say America is uncultured when it gave us such classic music in the form of The Winner Takes It All and Gangnam Style. Madness. Utter madness. Won’t somebody please think of the children!?

It's not about the style of music, the fashion or the films, it's about how your culture used to inspire instead of tear down. It's not only how I feel about America's cultural exports, it's how it is perceived not only by your own people, but also the rest of the world. I've given plenty of reasons, all of which have been simply ignored for the sake of more ABBA jokes. The American way of life used to inspire people to build the same in their countries and strive for a good life. I don't think that's the case anymore, or at least not as much as it once used to be.

Am I being a little bit placative, sure but only to get people engaged. My OP came from a place of deep appreciation for everything that the American culture has to offer, but honestly I feel like it is turning more and more into this:

Hate me for this all you like, but rest assured that I certainly don't want your culture to regress back 20 or 30 years but to keep innovating in the same spirit that it once used to. I think where it's most noticeable is in the music industry where absolute braindead crap like this has become the artistic norm:

It's really not that far away from the "Ass" movie tbh. There is still some brilliant stuff, but it's not in the eye of the mainstream as it once used to be.

But I don’t want to get over it. I want to sit here and laugh all day/week/month/year at the strained mentality that OP has displayed and continues to display.

Man you must lead a very uneventful life, but hey if my OP fills that dark empty hole in your soul, feel free to keep piling on.

It's all good I was not talking about you. I can deal with a fair bit of snark, I'm like that myself but some commentators here are just outright gleefully malicious.
Thanks for the kind words though, even if we vehemently disagreed in this thread. That takes some real grandeur :messenger_fistbump:

Making a thread isn't easy. When all is said and done, you are a super poster. It's a shame you came under attack but you're one of us.

I still have faith in you and credit for you taking a chance. Thank you for the thread and for all the joy it's bringing.

Random question, do you like Napoleon?

The pussy exorcism thread is a good time, at least, and fully self-aware. This thread’s intended purpose appeared to be to spread bitterness. Fortunately it went in a different direction.

Believing that media was better back in the good ol’ days is a common cognitive bias. With the classics we have spent decades curating the best material and discarding the derivative, mediocre trash that constitutes 99% of creative output. It’s different to live in any cultural period in real-time, surrounded by that 99% as it trickles in, and not necessarily being able to find the 1% or appreciating it without the benefit of hindsight.

And now with his overly sensitive responses, we're witnessing a true pussy exorcism.

And I'm the one being accused of being a bitter c*nt! You gotta be frikkin' sh*tting me.

God beware, we can't have a bit of "bitterness" leading to some good discussion amidst all the PR shilling, hostile console warring, toxic fanboying and toilet humor. Also how is expressing admiration for American classics and lamenting the lack of new quality material "bitter" in any way?

Your argument might be valid if you actually contributed some ‘good discussion’ but, again, the best you managed was…this.

You and me have strongly contrasting opinions of what defines a ‘decent’ thread. Sure the replies are fan-fucking-tactic, but that OP? Yikes.
Plenty of people seemed to enjoy it. Also have you looked around, there are far worse threads than this one so why aren't you taking a dump in those?
Again, the only issue here is that you simply didn't like my opinion. That's fine, no need to keep being a d*ck about it.

Also this what you consider a decent thread?

Not that there's anything wrong with being positive about one's own life, but it's not like it took any effort either. I've seen these topics a thousand times, so maybe try to practice what you preach.

You’re mistaking laughing at you for laughing with you. It’s okay, it’s an easy mistake to make. As for liking your opinion, I only like or dislike opinions that have merit. Yours, my friend, does not.

Enough people seem to agree with the gist of my OP, so I really don't need your blessing.
It is very obviously the latter rather than the former. The gleeful malice is palatable and it's f*cking petty. Now go and pester somebody else instead of further derailing this thread by contributing absolutely f*ck all.

Oh, you poor, delusional fool. You actually think they agree with you? Comes to something when you can’t realise you’re being mocked.

If it wasn’t for my witty retorts and apparently petty comebacks, this thread would’ve died a long time ago. The fact I’m replying to you in the first place is something you should be grateful for.

It's takes a cunning and able mind to start a topic about how America sucks by listing things that aren't even American!

If you're judging America's legacy by Kanye West features, of course you're depressed. You are aware that just because it's distributed publicly, it doesn't mean we all purchase the album and Bob our head to it proclaiming how much of a BAMF the country is because of it, yeah? I could say Japan sucks because of Sailor Moon, hentai, and Issei Sagawa, but the average person would probably tell me to stop being surprised when I accurately assess shit as shit.

I don't think many people agree with you strange headache strange headache , America is still pretty much the only country that exports it's cultural entertainment on a mass scale and the rest of the world laps it up and enjoys it.

*EDIT*
You really do sound bitter, you gotta look for things you enjoy and just enjoy it. Find people who like what you like, not people who hate what you hate.
