Cerny and Kutaragi really should be switched around in that gif.

why don't they just fucking axe their mobile division
Sony's stock is now the highest it has been since July 2011.
Nintendo Wii:
Launch (December 2006) - 3.19 million LTD shipped
3 months (March 2007) - 5.84 million LTD shipped
6 months (June 2007) - 9.27 million LTD shipped
9 months (September 2007) - 13.17 million LTD shipped
12 months (December 2007) - 20.14 million LTD shipped
Sony PS4:
Launch (December 2013) - 4.5 million LTD shipped
3 months (March 2014) - 7.5 million LTD shipped
6 months (June 2014) - 10.2 million LTD shipped
9 months (September 2014) - 13.5 million LTD shipped
12 months (December 2014) - 19.9 million LTD shipped
Discrepancy:
Launch (first Holiday) - PS4 is 1.31 million higher than Wii
3 months (first March) - PS4 is 1.66 million higher than Wii
6 months (first June) - PS4 is 0.93 million higher than Wii
9 months (first September) - PS4 is 0.33 million higher than Wii
12 months (second Holiday) - Wii is 0.24 million higher than PS4
It's fascinating how only now the Wii has overtaken the PS4 for the first time in terms of quarterly shipments.
I expect the discrepancy to grow in future quarters. After all, the Wii was an absolute beast in its early years (2006-2009). The question is...how far will PS4 lag behind it?
In future quarters:
15 months (March 2008) - 24.45 million LTD shipped
18 months (June 2008) - 29.62 million LTD shipped
21 months (September 2008) - 34.55 million LTD shipped
24 months (December 2008) - 44.96 million LTD shipped
27 months (March 2009) - 50.39 million LTD shipped
30 months (June 2009) - 52.62 million LTD shipped
33 months (September 2009) - 56.14 million LTD shipped
36 months (December 2009) - 67.45 million LTD shipped
It will be quite difficult for PS4 to match that extraordinary pace.

The wii was also significantly cheaper than the PS4 is now. I expect the streams to cross back and forth a few times should the Ps4 get a price cut. Or a popular game worth the upgrade.
Yeah and it's also doing it without the backing of a new casual audience.
Very impressive.
About Playstation 4, I expected total shipments to be around 20m units, so I'm not surprised by the strong numbers...looking at the numbers they did with PS3 during the holiday quarters and the total sold-through announcement it was clear they would hit those kind of numbers.
It will be interesting to see their strategy for 2015 (from April on). They had a terrific first year and achieving growth after such success is a major task, imo they'll try to make deals for the first half of the year including games like they're already doing right now, then there will be an official price cut announced at Gamescom (or E3 at the earliest). How much I don't know, 50$ off is obviously the minimum to expect, but I wouldn't be surprised if they went aggressive with a 100$ price cut considering what they did with the PS2 and the fact they're following the same business model with PS4, they have a lot of software to sell this year and lucrative subscription sales like PS+ depend a lot on new hardware sales.
What makes you sure that there is no backing from the mythical "casual audience"?
Casual Audience =/= motion controls audience, Sony already confirmed a while ago that only half the people that bought the PS4 owned a PS3, while the other half consisted of 360 owners, Wii owners, or first time console owners.

Pretty sure it's generally accepted that that audience mostly moved on to mobile.
Some 31% of people who have bought a PlayStation 4 had an Xbox 360 or Wii but not a PS3 in the last hardware generation, PlayStation's American VP of marketing John Koller told me in an interview here at L.A. this week.
Koller was citing results of a research study that he said also indicated that as much as 17% of people who have bought a PS4 didn't own a console in the previous generation.
"One thing that's interesting, though, is that we're starting to see a lot more of what we thought were going to be adopters later down the cycle coming in really early." Koller described that crowd as "indulgers, people that are traditionally a little bit more price-sensitive or down the funnel that have kind of bucked the trend as it were.'"
Mega Man to Nintendo, DMC to Sony, mmmmCapcom is a horrid company to buy while it's still "alive", only after it dies will everyone scramble for Capcom's corpse to try to get one of their many IP's.
Out of curiosity, how is the X1 doing in the same chart?
Why would it? They're seeing the benefit of releasing competent tech at a reasonable price rather than selling a high-end machine at a huge loss. If anything, this will ensure they do the same thing next time around.I hope this makes Sony deliver a powerful PS5.
I hope this makes Sony deliver a powerful PS5.
There is no evidence that they play *only* on mobile, Its just speculation.
Resident Evil to Japan Studio! I say goddamnMega Man to Nintendo, DMC to Sony, mmmm
Contrary to expectations, looking at this numbers I believe 360 is outselling PS3 worldwide and consolidating 2nd place for 7th generation.
If not, Xbox One is doing better than people estimate here.
Yeah.
XBO until Mar. 2014: 5.1 million.
XBO+360 from Apr. to Dec: 2014: 10.1 million
PS3 from Apr. to Dec: 2014: 2.7 million.
If 360 = PS3, XBO = 12.5 million.
If 360 < PS3, XBO > 12.5 million.
Thus, I put the max in my chart at 13 million.
I hope this makes Sony deliver a powerful PS5.

No as long as Team ICO don't touch itIs that your way of saying that you don't want to see another RE game ever completed again?
I'd rather they just fixed it.
You know, less frequent releases (hello Z2 to Z3 jump), focus only on mid- and high-end phones, release them on time and properly on all markets...
It is the opposite for me... it is fascinating how PS4 is holding compared with Wii... Wii was a beast and PS4 is really tracking close to it.It's fascinating how only now the Wii has overtaken the PS4 for the first time in terms of quarterly shipments.
Been hearing for years that the PS3 would outsell the 360 because outside the US/UK no one will buy the 360. Doesnt seem to be happening.
12.5 Million shipped is a good number for the X1 more than most would have thought.

As I get it it's rather hard to do so in the US if you don't have a prior engagement with one of the big ones. Can't say I know but from domestic analysts they are the greatest obstacles for Sony in the states and the market is rather volatile. Should be noted that even though they are rather respected analysts can often be totally wrong but it's still the only information I can navigate after if I don't want to go purely on hearsay.

Anyway, I chrunched the Vita numbers last time. Anyone else mind doing the favour this time? Work is way to hectic atm so I only have time for a quick visit.
PS. Being forced to let people go fucking sucks, especially when they do a good job
Ok guys I need some kind of explanation, what in the world is happening with the Mobile Communications department: they have a 14% increase on sales but they are like 8 times more in negative than last year Q3, What in the world did SONY do to increase in ten fold the losses. The same thing is happening with PICTURES, ALL OTHER and CORPORATE & ELIMINATION.
Man I need a Management Summary to explain the variations LOL.
Accrual of the -176 billion JPY ($1.50 billion) impairment charge of goodwill realised throughout FY 2014.
Besides that, unfavourable impact of the appreciation of the US dollar, a decrease in sales, and lower margins contribute to the lower OP.
Mobile is 10.5 billion JPY ($89.3 million) OP without impairment.

Poor availability in key markets, high cost structure, poor marketing, poor software optimisation.Hooray for abenomics.
I still don't understand how they flubbed mobile so much. They actually have a good product. I guess they do in TVs too. Haha.
I didn't ask for niche games, but big games. You know, huge, must-have, console defining (usually exclusive) experiences. But, looking at your list I understand why people see Vita as a dead console.
Carry on.
I wonder how would even want to buy their mobile arm if they were looking to sell it.
Well right now two of the big US carriers have Sony phones afaik (VZ and T-Mobile), but only one (T-M) has the actual Z3 (but not its more compact little sister, the Z3c) for $25/month for 2 years, while Verizon, weirdly enough, chose to only have the Z3v, an un-sexyfied version of the Z3 (with a Z2 body) for $200 under 2y contract.
This being said, compared to the situation with the Z2 a few months back it is far better though, and if they can get some attention with the Z4 and get it with its compact version under contracts -and- put a decent budget in advertising it, the situation could be quite different in FY 2016 imo.

Worldwide you mean
Middle East is also a big market for Sony
You're obsession with reasons as to why the PS4 had good bundles in the UK during Christmas and why Driveclub was high on the PAL charts is turning a tad unhealthy, you want to let it go.
Is this your first year in this great country? If not I ain't got a clue why you're shocked at good sales for electronics during the Christmas, it's always been awesome here for anything that is not an Apple product.
To be fair, such estimates were most likely being made at a time when this seemed a safe bet to happen, and few could have imagined the successor to the 360 would prove so unappealling to the public at large that the 360 would continue to be as popular an option as it has been for them and for it to keep selling at the pace it has been while the exact opposite scenario played out with PS3>PS4.
I know around 18 months ago I'd have predicted things being the complete reverse of what they actually are right now for sure.
Huh. Really?!? I never would have guessed that. It would be interesting to see some games targeted specifically to Middle Eastern gamers... Although I can't think about what that would even be.
