Finally finished Bloodlines so I figured I'd put one of these mini review things we're doing now

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

I bought it during the summer sale after roughly 3 years of waiting for a steam sale. I had read all the hype from here and other places, how it’s one of the last Deus Ex type games (some even said it was better) and how amazing it was so I was relatively excited to play.

I played as a Malkavian and did all but 2 of the quests that I came across. I’ll try to limit spoilers

+ graphics. Even though it’s an older game I still liked the style and graphics.

+ dialogue. Since I played as a Malkavian many of my dialog choices were…interesting to say the least. There were many funny lines due to my character’s insanity, and a lot of other characters were done well too. I’m pretty sure I noticed Bender too!

+ Story. It starts fairly slow since you’re new to the vampire society but near the end it gets a bit more interesting. It also has the standard wrpg 3-4 endings depending on your choices which is always welcome. I also liked how you have to respect the Masquerade by not doing things that expose vampires to humans.

- Combat. I know just about every wrpg before 2006 had awful combat but Bloodlines’ was so bad I can’t ignore it. I went the stealth route with Obfuscate and leveled up melee weapons and I still had a hard time when the fights came. The guns have the dreaded dice roll aiming that plague so many wrpgs, and melee combat switches to third person and is about as clunky as third person combat can get. Since I went stealth this wasn’t a huge issue until the end of the game, but this leads into the next negative…

- Bosses. You obviously can’t sneak by bosses so you’re forced to use the awful combat to try and beat these overpowered assholes. They’re tough and many require some trial and error before you beat them. Probably the most frustrating parts of the game.

- Lack of interaction. I’ve said before that I was getting a bit upset by the lack of interaction with the environment, since I kept seeing how “comparable” it is to Deus Ex, but it never got better. I would estimate that 70-80% of doors I found were unopenable. I don’t mean locked, I mean you couldn’t interact with them at all..they were just there. The 4 or so hub areas and the insides of buildings really lacked any form of interaction, there weren’t many secret areas that I found or meaningful loot.

- Last hour or two. The end sections of the game turn linear and full of forced combat. I couldn’t sneak past the enemies because they were vampires so they saw through my stealth. Other than the end choices you have to make this part was NOT fun at all.

I enjoyed the game overall but for the last few hours I was just ready for it to be over. It’s definitely nowhere near Deus Ex’s league but as its own game it’s not as awful as I made it out to be. I wanted to replay as a Nosferatu but I think it’s going to be a while before I can replay this.

If I had to give it a score it would be a 6/10

Also, what the fuck at making it a weekend deal now? I just noticed it was $5 when I searched for it. I waited 3 years for that kind of deal on steam but finally caved when it was $13 on the summer sale not even a month ago!!! Dammit

lol, Steam is trolling you guys hard with that 5$ deal :D

Goddamnit :( I knew I should have waited when it was only 33% off... still though, fantastic game. Anyone who doesn't own it, just buy it.

I'm thinking about buying it (SO MANY GAMES LEFT TO PLAY AAH) but I'm not sure about the "low violence version" showing up on Germanysteam. Anyone knowing what's going on with that, is it still a great game?

I'm playing through Deus Ex right now, and in the parts where you are in a big city like Vampire there are a ton of doors you can't interact with.

Also, the Vampire deal is hilarious.

Just use the thread that was going but update the price to $5 in the title.

That, and I thought Vampire had a strong sense of interactivity, at least in the towns. There were tons of computers full of logs to read, NPCs to chat up, tv/radio shows to watch, and locked rooms to break into. I was sure to search every nook and cranny.

Now if that Bloodlines deal isnt awesome.

There were multiple paths in just about every section of Deus Ex as well as a gross amount of loot and interactive objects. Yeah I found computers, vents, and keypads in Bloodlines but not many of them were useful. I found vents that didn't lead to a different approach, they just kind of randomly ended in a closet a few doors down from where I entered.

Then there was the loot thing. I found almost nothing useful out in the world, I had to buy it all. There was no real motivation to explore.

YES. I knew passing on Vampire during the Summer Sale was a good idea.

So bought. Tomorrow. With Chantelise and possible The Legend of Fae.

Oh Steam, you silly goose.

so looks like i'm addicted to steam atm.

so for the deals how often do they change? I see there is always a 24 hour deal from the store main page on the right if you scroll down. There's also midweek madness, and i see weekend deals. those switch back and fourth depending on the deal? anything else i should look for?

Seasonal deals, one-off deals. Random publisher / franchise deals.

Man that's a deal. It wasn't that low on the sale, was it? I bought it then and I'm happy I did, but it's a really cool deal to have it even lower now.

... I still need to get around to playing it, though. Damn The Witcher for being so long!

Its like they saw all the EA frustration threads these last few days and decided to throw a party :)
Next up: all CODs for 5$ a piece.

It would actually be pretty funny if they did a sale like that around the release of Battlefield 3. Or dropped the pre-order price for MW3 to like 40$.

I started a new game on Dungeons of Dredmor and after picking my skills and the game loading up, I got four achievements out of nowhere for maxing four of my skills. Weird.

yeah... kinda hurts

it hadn't been on sale in 2+ years and now it suddenly goes for less than half of what it was on sale for just a few weeks ago?
