I got SiN working, but it's dated horribly, it's a pretty crappy game. It came out just before HL1, which in retrospect is just about when FPSs got really good to me personally. I loved Duke3D before that, but HL1 was about as big a leap in design as I think the industry has ever had, especially considering it didn't come with a significant technical innovation.

SiN Episode still seems pretty cool though. It makes me wonder why we didn't see a ton of Half-Life clones. I really don't know of many at all, this might be the only one. I guess DNF had some direct HL influences based on what some people have said about the game later than I played of it.

If anyone knows of any good HL clones, feel free to speak up, I'd like to try some more.
 
I didn't even know it was on PC till just now, it's on Steam too, very cool, I'll check it out thanks.

I did play it at the time on PS2, but only for an hour or so I think.
 
I played 2 back in the day and I didn't like it. It was too... I don't know, I guess dudebro is what you'd say these days. I loved fighting through the tunnels in Mars, rebeling against the opressors, fighting through the mining complexes etc. It felt like a great adventure where you were really fighting for your life and the freedom of other miners.

2 had none of that. It was more of a traditional FPS that had no soul.

The first Red Faction game is the only great one in the series. Guerilla may have good destruction but as a game it's trash.

I think I'm gonna have to agree with this, the characters are ugly. They look like inbreds.
 
I've just finished off SiN Episodes: Emergence, I like it, it's certainly not HL2 good or anything, but it was enjoyable, and it's evocative of those games. It's short, total play time is 'about 2 hours'. I've heard the name levelord for a long time, but I don't know who it is, but they worked on this.

Before the credits roll you get a trailer for Episode 2. It looked interesting, while Emergence essentially takes place in two locations, it appeared the plan for Episode 2 was to switch it up with a more urban environment, possibly something a little more open.

It makes me think about episodic gaming, I've also been playing The Longest Journey of late, while HL managed to get two 'episodes' out, and SiN managed one, as of yet they've failed to deliver a single episode of the Dreamfall Chapter project. While it's pretty clear why episodic gaming is such a terrible idea in terms of money, there were instances where it could have been done correctly. Sony had every episode of Siren for PS3 completed, but they decided to sell them all from day one, and in bundles too. Really terrible. We could have had one a month/every two weeks. They could have been first to do it with a 'real' game.

The last line in SiN Episodes is "save me a seat in the sequel", I wonder if the industry will ever produce a viable model for episodic gaming, because it's a very attractive concept to me.

I've just installed my first SSD :D How do you install Steam + select games on to an SSD and then have the rest installed on a different HDD. I have my SteamApps folder saved so I hope I don't have to re-download anything?
 
Not sure if anybody can help me, but I installed the Source SDK today (hadn't had it installed since I bought my new PC) and no games are appearing in the 'current game' list no matter which version I have the SDK on. This is the first time I've had this problem, and I'm not sure what to do.

Do the game specific SDKs work? The Portal 2 Beta build etc?
 
So I fired Quake 4 up at last after wanting to play it for a while and I'm really enjoying myself so far. The weapons have a great feel to them and I found it amusing just how much more quakelike it feels after the stroggification.

The Portal 2 SDK beta works fine. I've tried refreshing the SDK content for the Source SDK, and it continually fails to find my installed games.

Did you install the base versions as well? Source SDK Base 2007 etc.

Also: The SDK is quite... Buggy from time to time. I remember my cousin not showing anything up in the SDK as well and he could only mod for Half life 2 Deathmatch, even though he wanted to do EP2.

Yep, both SDK Base 2007 and 2006 are installed.

I'm reinstalling the entire Source SDK one last time to see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise I might have to jump into UDK, which will suck, as I'm awfully rusty with Unreal :S.

They wouldn't have been the first to do it with a real game

On consoles, on consoles in the US, the whole shareware model really, these guys, these guys, tons of Japanese mobile games.

Yeah I've always liked the idea of episodic games on paper, but there's a number of observations to be made in terms of the guise gaming has taken in recent years.

For one we pretty much have "episodic" games per default these days. Sure, the term may imply something more frequent, but the way game stories in ongoing franchises work is almost always effectively on an episodic basis. Rare is the odd few that actually encompass the full extent of its story arc and give you a satisfying sense of finality at the end, and available in abundance are the games that keep giving you slices of the bigger thing. The allure of episodes in the serialised story and gameplay sense is pretty much already in effect, which leaves the fundamental benefits of episodic development as the sole meaningful distinction, and that's where it usually falls apart.

Producing a game and then cutting it into pieces doesn't really benefit the developer at all. Perhaps there's a lower bar of entry for a consumer to sample the game, but that's hardly helpful for the guys on the other end. The only way truly episodic gaming makes sense is for developers to find a cycle that allows them to turn out a segment of gameyness on a recurring basis, and that's inevitably going to be fairly limiting in terms of how sophisticated the mechanics are. With a coarse framework and narrative driven content like the adventure games Telltale make - and I'm not trying to diminish their efforts and talent one bit - it's reasonably easy to just slot in a new scenario and set of puzzle based obstacles, but for anything more mechanically engaging it's not gonna be easy to remain consistently compelling.

So yeah, I like it in theory, but there are a number of factors that I have to imagine make it a daunting challenge.

Finally the DLC for the vanilla version of Fallout 3 is on sale. I've been waiting for this for years. Thank you Bethesda!
 
Probably will grab Old World Blues and Fallout 3 GotY, and wait on the rest of the New Vegas DLC. Sounds like OWB is above and beyond the rest.

Hunted is actually part of the Quakecon 2011 pack so anyone interested should get that today, as I assume the discount will disappear this time tomorrow.
 
I just played some Jamestown co-op with my girlfriend, really cool game, I bought it at launch but it kind of got buried under all the new PC stuff I was getting at the time. I can't wait to get some friends over though, I'll move my PC over to the TV and get some great four player co-op going.

I hope the guys at Final Form did well enough with it to make more shmups.
 
so I already own New Vegas on Xbox, and I went through the whole story. I'm thinking of getting it for the PC as it will cost me for the full game along with 3 dlc's for just $25 and also get to try the awesome mods. However, on Xbox I'll be paying $30 just for the dlc's.
so can I play the steam version with a save game and earn achievements ?, as I don't feel going through the story again.
