STEAM- Announcements & Updates 2011 Edition |OT2|

Hey all, I just added a second hard drive and want to change the location of where Steam installs future games to since my primary drive is full. Is this possible? I see there is a backup/restore option... would I "backup" my games and then restore them to the new location? I looked under Settings but didn't see an option on where to save games to.

Hah, funny timing on my question.. looks like someone else is in a similar boat.

It's 16 folders because he didn't change the default DVD sized chunks the backup makes.

If its just that game its less than 700mb installed, so no thats not it, if its just for that one game.

Why would anybody ever use steam's backup feature? Serious question.

I have every game on Steam backed up on another hard drive, never had an issue with it, over 300 back ups. Well, never had a problem till yesterday, my backup for ac brotherhood wouldnt work so had to redownload. Even after downloading it wont back up now. There seems to be issues currently with that game.

No, it was for about 95Gb of games, different ones.
I was not thinking straight when doing the backup.

I have heard nothing but bad reports about the backup feature. For future reference, you're much better off just moving the steamapps folder to another hdd.

I like it very much. Only play single (campaign and skirmish) and felt I got my money's worth. Keep in mind though that you do have different campaigns but they mainly play out the same (with different units of course) which is a bit lame.

I play games on 3 primary machines
1. My work machine but can't download em there due to everyport being locked down so must use cell tethering to connect to steam and I'm not re-downloading Gigs thru my phone
2. HTPC hooked up to Tv
3. Home office machine.

Considering how many gigs downloads are its easier to back up copy to stick and restore on the other 2 machines.

Because just copying the Steamapps folder is error-proof.

Now that method I have had issues with. Steam wouldn't start, and when I did get it started the games weren't recognized. I tried every thing I could find in regards to help with the problems but nothing worked.

R.e. my question above

So if I want to move the Steam games off my C: to my new F: drive, I just drag the steamapps folder over and it will continue to work? Would I then uninstall the Steam exe and reinstall at F: to force it to install new games to there?

How do I go about moving Steam games from one HDD to another? I just installed a new SSD and I'd like Steam and some games to boot from the SSD while having other games on the mechanical drive. How exactly do I go about doing this? I know I can move the Steamapps folder entirely but what if I just want to move individual games?

edit: looks like I'm late to the party

Don't move the steam folder but the steamapps folder. Reinstall steam then move the folder back. It works 9/10 sometimes steam recreates some like appdata folders or whatever or redoes the C++/DX stuff but then you're good to go.

That's exactly what I did and kept having issues. I tried various ways of fixing it but none of them worked.

Just to make sure: you followed these steps, right?

1) Copy out the steamapps folder.
2) Uninstalled Steam.
3) Reinstalled Steam (especially to the drive where you want your games, if partitioning).
4) Copied over the steamapps folder, replacing the one already in there.

Your games will need to download a 1k file to re-authenticate them, but that should be the only thing that happens clientside.

If you did all that in exactly those steps, then I don't know what to tell you. There must be something weird with your system.

Can I copy the steamapps folder over, but with only specific game files? ie only Fallout 3 folder but everything from the steamapps folder ?

I have over 60GB of steam install files. When I setup my new PC, it would literally have taken a week to re-download everything. I just picked from my backup running over USB3, and was back up and running significantly faster.

Definite yay...3v3 skirmish is really fun (but the curve is brutal). Last Stand is the casual multiplayer mode and campaign is fun as well (though not as good as Chaos Rising). Even if you don't invest anything into skirmish, you'll get your money's worth just by playing campaign and/or last stand.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure if I follow you. Like, you only want certain games to be copied over in the steamapps folder?

You could do that one of two ways:
1) delete/uninstall games you don't want to copy over.
2) create a folder called steamapps on your desktop and copy over just the games you want to copy to that folder.

I think he meant "why would you use the backup feature instead of just directly copying over the files?"

Yes, that's exactly what I did. At first Steam wouldn't even start. I did some researching and found that I should delete the "ClientRegistry.blob" file which didn't help, and then I read something else about renaming it with "Old" at the end which I did and it would start after that. But now that is was started none of my games were recognized.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else had zero issues with Steam's backup and restore utility?

Did you restart Steam a few times after deleting clientregistry.blob? Also, what do you mean that your games weren't recognized? Did the Steam client show a list of games tied to your account, but with none of them downloaded? Did you try right clicking, selecting properties, and verifying the game cache?

I'm sure you've probably gone through all this, but with this stuff every small step counts.

Also, what kind of move were you doing? Were you moving the Steamapps folder to a new computer, a fresh reinstall, or a new partition? The only other thing I can think of is that Windows did that weird file ownership thing it does where it doesn't let you access files "owned" by another user.

If your games aren't recognized immediately, you might have try to install them, then Steam will see that all the files are already there and you'll be good to go. It might be best to just copy and paste in the files for one or two games at a time.

Yeah, I did everything you mentioned in the first paragraph. When I got Steam to load it would show the games that I have but not as installed. I tried verifying and nothing happened. I clicked on install and it just started downloading them like normal.

I have a secondary drive for everything other than the OS and I had upgraded to a larger drive. So I was just wanting to put all the games on this new drive.

When I went to install them it just kept downloading them like it normally does. And when I did this I just did it one game at a time, not the whole lot.

Tonight Steam set a new record in concurrent users: 3,790,601
In November 2009, the 2 million mark was reached for the first time. Looks like Steam will have doubled up before 2 years are over.

depends on DOTA2

Don't you love it when you buy something and a few days later it's on sale?

I just bought Jamestown last week and now it's half off!

Steam needs a 30 day price guarantee lol

Only buy if it's on sale - Steam's rule. On the other hand, the developer probably received more money.

I wish they had something like this. It doesn't have to be 30 days, but I felt completely swindled when Bloodlines was $5 about 2 weeks after the summer sale where it was $13. Many people including me bought it then because we figured since it hadn't been on sale in literally 3 years, that we should pick it up on the last day of the sale.

I know that's Activision's fault more than Steam's, but even Amazon has like a 1 or 1 1/2 week window where they'll refund you the difference if the price drops.

cant believe im trusting Ubisoft again.. but its a 2D title, there's a limit to how far they can possibly screw it up.

You'd be surprised. 2D game or not, I wonder why Rayman ain't coming.

Might as well post this in here, someone might be interested:

By Monday a friend of mine is gonna have some steam keys for pre-orders thanks to his job that he's gonna sell cheaper than the asking price, these range from stuff like Space Marine, Saints Row The Third, Battlefield 3 limited edition (no steam, but still), etc

he's hoping to sell some of these for like $40 bucks, so pretty much the cheapest option (specially for Space Marine wich isnt available in sites like green man gaming and such). So yeah, pm me for specifics or if youre looking for a game i havent listed.

/salsa making you broke

So glad Human Revolution has a pre-load option. Worse part about buying new games on Steam is knowing I won't even be able to start the download until I get home from work... then of course the servers are getting hit hard to my download speed is only a third of what it should be.

Has there been any talk about auto-downloading games when they become available?

Sometimes you can send in a ticket if you bought the game a day before the sale and they'll credit you back..it's easier for them if you accept Steam Wallet credit.

Stat tracking broken on From Dust for anyone else? Stuck at 4.4 hours :/

wow apparently forcing vsync in the nvidia control panel stops steam from detecting whether I'm playing the game or not.. could this port get any worse?

I just beat Dungeon Siege III.

I'll do a little post here since no one cares about the OT anymore. It's a pretty good game.

As an Obsidian Game, it falls short. KOTOR 2, New Vegas, and Alpha Protocol are among my all-time favorite RPG's (NW2 is on the backlog), but DS3 doesn't belong with them. Those games captured my attention with the choices they offered, the compelling universes they were set in, and the characters that populated them, and sadly DS3 fell way short of the standards set by those games. There were a few big choices in DS3's plot, but it was set in a very boring place full of characters I couldn't muster up a crap about. I savored the story in previous Obsidian games, but I mashed the A button through almost every story sequence in DS3. I just couldn't force myself to care.

As a PC game, it's a mixed bag. The KB/M controls are borked, and the interface is chunky and doesn't fit properly to high res screens. It's no doubt a console port. Thankfully, it plays very well with a gamepad and it ran flawlessly on my rig. I maxed out all settings and there was not a single noticeable frame drop. The Onyx engine is very promising.

Positive:
- combat is accessible, but engaging with a decent amount of depth for an action RPG - it's the highlight of the game
- Obsidian's new engine is fantastic, no bugs or jank, it ran seamlessly without a single crash
- there was a nice sense of progression, between leveling and acquiring new gear, that held strong throughout the whole game
- I played as Katarina, the gunwoman, but it seems like my experience would be much different if I played as one of the other 3 mains, which makes me want to revisit the game someday

Negative:
- the plot and characters are so boring, I ended up skipping through most dialog trees
- the dungeon siege universe (at least in my experience with 3) is uninspired and trite
- the online mode is a dead end, characters aren't persistent and it seems to be barren activity-wise
- as fun as it was, it excelled at nothing. It's a very safe game, which is disappointing coming from an ambitious dev like Obsidian.

Overall, DS3 is a competent game. It isn't exceptional in any way, and it has a few major issues that hold it back from greatness, but it's safe and solid throughout. Fans of the genre should definitely give it a look, but you might want to wait for the right price unless you're a diehard Obsidian fan or starved for a decent action RPG.

It happens from time to time with some games it seems. I know that the playtime for The Witcher got stuck during two play sessions for me. It started working again after that though.

Btw, I noticed that Civ V is 66% off this week on Gamersgate, and you get a Steam key.

That post above convinced me to download and play the DSIII demo. I liked what I played and I'll most likely pick it up cheap (it's a Steamworks title, right?). It worked perfect on my anno 2008 rig. Something bugged me though: There seemed to be no potions, only health pick-ups from defeated enemies and there's also no punishment if you die, you just start from where you died. Maybe that's just in the demo though.

I'm a total noob when it comes to Obsidian games but I really liked what I played in Alpha Protocol and they seem to be a pretty good developer with budget problems. I'll try to grab more of their games, New Vegas is already in my backlog.

Speaking of which, I got NV from the QuakeCon-Pack and started playing some of the other games today:

Wow is Rogue Warrior bad. Like really, really bad. Weird stuttering, bad dialogue, bad level design, bad shooting mechanics, bad bad. Also, what is this shit? Deleted and moved to the "Total Fucking Gar-Bitch" category.

Brink is kinda stupid too, since it's basically MP-focused.. I'm mostly an SP-gamer though, so it really holds no real value to me. Looks good though and the customization aspects are nice but what does it really matter if you don't see your character anyway?

Hunted is really mediocre. Some really strange design decisions. You can only switch characters at certain waypoints, and if you don't know what enemies are ahead of you, you'll just have to fall back and watch the CPU take the enemies apart. The inventory system is a mess too. If you pick a piece of equipment up, the one you were carrying is discarded. There are enchanted weapons but the enchantment wears off after a few uses. Also, it's too fucking grimey and not in a good way. The only good thing I can say about it are the stuff the girl says. Maybe I shouldn't have expected it to be an RPG. Maybe it really should be played as a multiplayer game. Oh well.

Some of the old stuff like Ultimate Doom is giving me problems, had to install some source ports to make it work. Now I really want a modern Heretic-like game.

I got around to playing this yesterday. I lasted about 4 missions before I turned it off. I'd have turned it off a lot earlier but me and some mates were cracking up at the voice work.

It's a really, really bad game. Not 'so bad it's good', just bad. Will only run at 1080p24 on my machine for some reason. I couldn't be arsed to figure out why.

I'll probably still get around to finishing it one day.
