Why would anybody ever use steam's backup feature? Serious question.

I have heard nothing but bad reports about the backup feature. For future reference, you're much better off just moving the steamapps folder to another hdd.Benedict said:After installing a new Windows 7 64-bit and gfx card, I am trying to reinstall the backup of my steam-games. But I can't get it to work. Steam can't find the files.
I like it very much. Only play single (campaign and skirmish) and felt I got my money's worth. Keep in mind though that you do have different campaigns but they mainly play out the same (with different units of course) which is a bit lame.inky said:So, people, opinions on Retribution for $15, yay or nay? Is it best played co-op/multi or does the SP hold on well if I'm more into that?

Don't move the steam folder but the steamapps folder. Reinstall steam then move the folder back. It works 9/10 sometimes steam recreates some like appdata folders or whatever or redoes the C++/DX stuff but then you're good to go.LastWindow said:Now that method I have had issues with. Steam wouldn't start, and when I did get it started the games weren't recognized. I tried every thing I could find in regards to help with the problems but nothing worked.

morningbus said:Just to make sure: you followed these steps, right?
1) Copy out the steamapps folder.
2) Uninstalled Steam.
3) Reinstalled Steam (especially to the drive where you want your games, if partitioning).
4) Copied over the steamapps folder, replacing the one already in there.
Your games will need to download a 1k file to re-authenticate them, but that should be the only thing that happens clientside.
If you did all that in exactly those steps, then I don't know what to tell you. There must be something weird with your system.

I have over 60GB of steam install files. When I setup my new PC, it would literally have taken a week to re-download everything. I just picked from my backup running over USB3, and was back up and running significantly faster.

LastWindow said:Yes, that's exactly what I did. At first Steam wouldn't even start. I did some researching and found that I should delete the "ClientRegistry.blob" file, which I did and it would start after that. But now that is was started none of my games were recognized.
morningbus said:Did you restart Steam a few times after deleting clientregistry.blob? Also, what do you mean that your games weren't recognized? Did the Steam client show a list of games tied to your account, but with none of them downloaded? Did you try right clicking, selecting properties, and verifying the game cache?
I'm sure you've probably gone through all this, but with this stuff every small step counts.
Also, what kind of move were you doing? Were you moving the Steamapps folder to a new computer, a fresh reinstall, or a new partition? The only other thing I can think of is that Windows did that weird file ownership thing it does where it doesn't let you access files "owned" by another user.
Joe Molotov said:If your games aren't recognized immediately, you might have try to install them, then Steam will see that all the files are already there and you'll be good to go. It might be best to just copy and paste in the files for one or two games at a time.

In November 2009, the 2 million mark was reached for the first time. Looks like Steam will have doubled up before 2 years are over.

cant believe im trusting Ubisoft again.. but its a 2D title, there's a limit to how far they can possibly screw it up.

It happens from time to time with some games it seems. I know that the playtime for The Witcher got stuck during two play sessions for me. It started working again after that though.3chopl0x said:Stat tracking broken on From Dust for anyone else? Stuck at 4.4 hours :/
wow apparently forcing vsync in the nvidia control panel stops steam from detecting whether I'm playing the game or not.. could this port get any worse?

I got around to playing this yesterday. I lasted about 4 missions before I turned it off. I'd have turned it off a lot earlier but me and some mates were cracking up at the voice work.Glass Rebel said:Wow is Rogue Warrior bad. Like really, really bad.
