Any more info? Impressions?
Well here are the links:
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-PREC/precursors
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-XENUS2/xenus-2-white-gold

only good for the next 6 days or so.

I haven't played them but from what I've seen they're kind of like Stalker but with a totally different theme and some different mechanics (in Precursors you can take body region damage, in other words step on a mine, and you can't run and have to heal your leg)

15.5 hours for a first-time play-through is criminally low. That's barely twice as long as your average shooter.
Actually by my calculations that is about 3 times the length of your average shooter. Based on what I have played so far of Dungeon Siege 3 (I'm 7.5 hours in in co-op), I would be content with being at the half-way point. I don't need or want every RPG to be 30-80 hours.

I don't believe this was an Avellone baby so I think that might be why the story isn't all that compelling.

So I am about to beat KOTOR (beat it back in the day too) and want more. KOTOR 2 isn't on Steam and I've already played the shit out of the Mass Effect series. I need more PC WRPG goodness though.

Where should I go next, GAF?

The Witcher?

been there, done that, but I will definitely check out the Witcher and Vampire Bloodlines. I played some of DA 2 and it was sickening. But maybe I'll give the original a chance someday.

I hope my rig can run the Witcher... I can max KOTOR though!

Don't start quacking and flapping like crazy when I ask this, but does The Witcher support controller?

I have the Enhanced Edition but haven't started it yet because I can't find a comfy KB&M setup. To be honest, I can't really be arsed to find a comfy setup, I prefer using my PC as a sort of 'Super-Console' with pad control wherever possible.

Drakensang River of Time!

Just beat it over the weekend (the expansion too), about 50 hrs. total, I'd say about 40-45 for the main game though. The expansion has some nice boss battles and some nice equips though.

I heard Witcher had shit support for controller when I played it a few weeks ago.

I'm going to try a controller for 2, though, when the big update is released. Meant to be much better.

I don't think so, but I found this post for you:
http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1037364980&postcount=10
I know it's been nearly 3 years since this thread has been created but seeing as how it's the first google result for "Witcher gamepad" I thought I'd share my solution.

First, download XPadder:
http://www.xpadder.com/

Then, go through the controller settings and set up your gamepad. You can also download a controller image here (note: if you have one of the major 3 gamepads such as 360, ps3, or logitech rumblepad just download the settings file in the zip at the bottom of this post):
http://xpadder.com/gcdb.php?command=...=Rumblepad 2

Finally, download this file into XPadder to set up the witcher (works on 360 gamepad, logitech gamepads, ps3, and others with the same layout):

http://cloudstew.com/files/XPadder Witcher.zip

The zip file also contains controller settings for the 360 controller, PS3 controller, and Rumblepad controllers so you don't have to set them up individually.

Have fun!

I'm two hours into The Witcher... And I don't think I wanna keep playing this. I can't believe how crap the combat is.

The combat does get kinda better, I mean, adding in new skills and shit. Might be worth playing on hard so alchemy is worth while. When I first played the game I stopped playing, but if you break through the prologue/chapter 1 it develops into something brilliant.

Just get past chapter 1.

Prologue is cool, chapter 1 just fucking drones on, Chapter 2 owns, Chapter 3 owns less, Chapter 4 is the best, chapter 5 owns less than 3, and the epilogue is about like chapter 3.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say I like the combat. It's simplistic but it's easy in the mechanics and what you can do in the game.

What's wrong with 2? Oh the controller? It seems to work fine, though it feels too clunky to me compared to using the keyboard.

Yeah, I still cant get past the combat. Hoping to find a mod that makes it better.

I didn't hate the combat as much as some. I just wish there was a mod that made the combo notification better(bigger brighter maybe with a sound notification as well) and it shouldn't be so pixel hunter happy, you shouldn't have to make sure your curser doesn't slip off your target.

I never said anything was wrong with 2? I'm just waiting for that update now since it's so close. Seems silly not to.

The W1? Meh I love the combat of the Witcher, it's different in a good way.

I'm one of the strange ones, but I preferred it to the W2, felt more PC-centric to me.

I'll admit I haven't played a lot of shooters lately, but I figured ~5 hour campaigns were still largely attributed to Call of Duty games.

Based on what I have played so far of Dungeon Siege 3 (I'm 7.5 hours in in co-op), I would be content with being at the half-way point. I don't need or want every RPG to be 30-80 hours.

When I think of the RPG genre, more specifically RPGs from large-publisher-backed developers such as Obsidian, I expect more meat than ~15 hours. Mind you, if the creative foundations of the game can't adequately support anything longer, then I suppose it being on the shorter side is for the best.

Edit: With regards to the combat in The Witcher, the dullness of it was also an issue for me but when the sequel was looming I forced myself to continue with the game. I'm glad I did as 70+ hours later I'd finished it, considering the experience a wonderful one. I believe my total play time was 77 hours and I can't say the game ever felt as though it was overstaying its welcome.

oh and due to the fact the combat is such a pixel hunt, and in general your whipping your cursor all over due to the interface, I don't think it would be worth trying to use a gamepad that emulates a mouse on the right stick.

They already have sound notifications in the design.

I literally zoned out while attacking mobs and was able to time it by the sound alone
SWIF SWIF SWIF
*pause in the audio* "Oh okay hit LMB"
SWIF SWIF SWIF SWIF
*pause in the audio* "Oh okay hit LMB"
SWIF SWIF SWIF SWIF SWIF
*pause in the audio* "Oh okay hit LMB"

"Now lets do the final attack.....oh wait the mob is already dead, on to the next one!"

half the time I didn't even look at the screen, especially with group combat being so OP. Those swamp dudes were pointless though later in the game when you're taking out like 10 of them at once in one group combat hit :|

Also I never thought it was a pixel hunt and never had any issues with that. Then again, I'm an arms length (shoulder to knuckles) from my monitor

Hmm i never thought of an absence of audio as a Que but I'd rather have its more prominent.

I guess it depends which view you use for combat.

I don't know, I played it for like 45 hours to the end so about 1/3 it it was really obvious on my 5.1 setup when there was suddenly no sword noises for a second.

I just beat Half Life 2 Episode One in one sitting yesterday. It was completely amazing. I really liked Half Life 2, but I can't help but fall in love with short, expertly paced games. I think a great short campaign is the best type of single player experience and that is what the episodes seem to provide. I am so excited to play through Episode 2 in one sitting sometime as well!

I wish I had known about that one bullet achievement before I started though, it would have been fun to try to do that.

Episode Two, being the best FPS this generation, is going to... hell, I don't know. I don't think I've ever seen anybody label Episode One as "amazing". :p I think it was StuBurns, though, who described it as a continuation of the best bits of Half-Life 2, which is a description I can agree with.

Those loot based games shouldn't be as long as normal rpgs. I would estimate DS3 took me about the same amount of time, maybe 20 hours, but I can tell you by the end I was really ready for it to finish. I was bored to tears using the same 3 useful abilities by then.

Hey, if Episode 2 is even better, awesome! I wish more games had episodic content like this. I love games where I can power through in one sitting and have a great time doing it.

That's a hallmark of a poorly-designed game rather than something inherent in the action-RPG genre. Torchlight, for example, I've played well behind the final story level.

Ep 2 encourages one sitting, almost. It's one great road trip.

I agree it's the best FPS ever.

I have said that yeah. I do see EP1 as HL2's epilogue, and EP2 more as HL3 part one. And I do think it's the best shooter I've ever played. I don't want to over hype it for anyone going in the first time, but it's such a different game in it's focus. It's amazing Valve managed to change directions so radically without missing a beat. There are even things in EP2 that I would swear were bad game design choices, the tunnels+lights for example, but in the context of the story it's about as intense as anything I've played.

They went from isolation, to partnership, to camaraderie. HL3 will need to have Gordon leading an army to keep the elevation going.

(Although the tunnel+lights thing is kind of a take on the motion detector from Aliens, which was a genius design decision for a film)

As someone who played through Half Life 2 for the first time recently, I'll agree that Episode 2 is much better than Ep1. Ep1 was great as a continuation of Half Life 2, but Ep2 just feels like an altogether terrific game.

Probably my favourite part of the game. The way the tension gradually builds is brilliant.
