The Darkness: The Official Thread

7.8 Does sound a bit harsh, they make it sound like they expected an epic 60 hour adventure. They did expect a little too much.

hm.. too bad. I was strongly considering getting this in spite of the rush of Wii60 games coming out in August/September, but now it's going on the backburner until I can more reasonably afford it/have time to play it

I've played a bit and so far some very early observations.
1. Great looking graphics, but there's something about the subtle blur that's somewhat disorienting. Can't put my finger on what is it. Could be the lack of a true reticle (hate those 2 tiny spots) too.

2. Great presentation. The voice acting, atmosphere, and music is so far really good. Fantastic intro.

3. Not a fan of the aiming reticle, and auto-aim in it so far. I might get used to it as I play more though.

4. I LOVE how the game sounds in surround sound with the creepy voices sounding from different channels.

5. Damn the distracting TV channels. The first time I died, I got distracted watching TV, and got shot from behind.

6. Lip sync is really bad.

7. What the... I'm running out of ammo this early on? This annoys me!

Thank you

We're in the HD era, yet the first person to comment on this important aspect of the game is a forum member. Surround made Condemned what it is, I can't believe no review mentioned the surround in The Darkness.

Do you not have darkness powers yet, or do you think you're using too much ammo because of the aiming system?

That was early on, when I had just gotten the darkness powers. They aren't too useful in a gun fight (other than directing the Berserker, and using the tentacles while hiding). But yeah, it's not an issue so far. That was also compounded with the aiming system.

Anyway... will play more. :p

Hmmm. I look forward to renting this. I think Tom Chick is right, sometimes a company can be a bit sabotaged by a previous success! (ie. the brilliant Chronicles). I do hope I enjoy it, but I also trust Tom's impressions more than ign/gamespot haha.

Ah, thanks. Still really looking forward to finally playing it tomorrow, it's been a long wait.

I was going to buy this on release date... wasn't expecting this game that's been three years in development only lasts 8-10 hours with no (apparently) compelling multiplayer.

There are so many awesome games coming out in the fall, and with the limited amount of money I'm willing to spend on video games, I'll wait till it hits $20-30.

I really ****ing hate next-gen pricing and $60 games.. ****

sucks that gamespots review isnt out yet

it's an extremley small team. Only 45 people...starbreeze said recently in an interview that they wish they had more people, but the darkness was more costly than they thought. hopefully they're financially tight.

dunno what's wrong with Hilary. He has thrashtalked the game in several IGN threads already and that before even reviewing it. Maybe starbreeze ran over his dog or something.

He's just mad at the world because he has a girl's name. Can't say I blame him.

8-10 hours without the side quests i'm assuming, right? So including the sidequests the game is probably 12 or so hours? I swear I read the game was 12-15 hours long in another review.

I've played the first couple of hours and I like it. Took some time to adjust the controls to my liking and it defaulted to a picture setting that didn't look to good i.e color correction. Well, I turned that crap off and got started and it's pretty cool, glad I bought it. The comics you unlock are very cool, has a zoom feature that goes from panel to panel and music plays in the background. At first I thought the character moved kinda slow but once my brain realized this wasn't Quake, it was all good. I like the slower pacing and adventure-like feel to it. Feels like a cross between condemned and riddick. Graphics are tight, guns sound ordinary (so far) and voice acting really puts you in the mood, big plus. No hud really makes it feel atmospheric and cohesive and I think this is one of the few FPS where your character has wrists that work. I thought it was a nice touch when I was looking down into a barrel and buddy pointed the guns down into it. Will play more later.

Any clues as to how many Darkness comics there are?

That's actually par for the course. Oh, it's $50 at Circuit City.

Wow. Development time has nothing to do with game length. Just look at movies- they're in development for a few years most of the time yet only last around 2 hours. If you were to actually follow your comment, you'd be missing out on amazing games like MGS2, God of War, and many others.

And you call yourself a gamer...

I downloaded the IGN video review, but couldn't stand listening to the guy reviewing it so muted it. The video looked awesome and I am as psyched as ever to get it.

Hard to take someone seriously that has been biased against the game even before it was out.

1. stand still and turn. that;'s it, kicks in real quick.

2. yes.

3. kinda

6. i think its how they did the mocap

7. you must be wasting lots of ammo. get close for execution kills and aim for their heads.

I'll take a really good 8 to 15 hours over a crappy 30 hours anyday.

Anyone who is playing it right now, how much do they drop the F-bomb in the game. It is kind of a turn off for me if it is used in every other sentence. I will most likely get it anyway but I was just wondering about it.

They do say it a lot, along with the other swear words. But i haven't heard any F-bombs.

My Gamecrazy got it a day early, i've been playing through it for the past 3 1/2 hours. It kicks serious ass! To anyone else who has the game and has played through it:

I just completed the Hell section of the game. I only found two of the four demons on the crosses. Did i miss out on an achievement?

The game kicks ass BTW.

Oh man, I just watched the IGN Video Review and I love the way the gunplay looks. It reminds me of this movie I like called Equilibrium(sp?) which had some great gunplay in it.

Hell I'll take a good 8 to 15 hours over a good 30 to 40 hours. Most of you guys are in your 20s or 30s, where the hell do you get the time to play through games that long?

Have played the first 3 hours or so and I'm pretty impressed. I really like how the hands work with obstacles and such, but there prob is a bit too much auto aim (atleast on Medium, dunno if it changes on Hard).

Graphics are great, gameplay seems to work really well so far, the voicework is pretty good with Jackie and "The Darkness" being stand outs and the rest of the sound work is really solid. The game has a lot of dark humor that generally made me laugh, that's a definite plus. The length is a tiny bummer, but I'm so ADD that I cant seem to finish any games longer than like 10 hours no matter how much I like them (still have God of War2 and Gears sitting like 3/4 complete from months ago).

p.s. Jackies VA is the guy that played Nicky Cottero in The Black Donnellys, which is totally win in my book.

Just means you spend more time on just one game when you do get those breaks.

Also, who the hell wants to put $60 down on a 7.8 quality title?
