you know what line really cracked me up this time through? once ashley and leon find out they're infected, the inflection on leon's reassurance to her is so bizarre.

"you got that right. we'll FIND a cure."

and he emphasizes the "find" as if that's specifically a very particular thing they'll do to a cure, not like "we'll surely find it." it almost makes it sound like he's saying they're not going to brew one up themselves, or play a pick-up game with the cure, but they're going to FIND a cure.

this is it.

Really the only truly shitty (as in, no advantages whatsoever) weapon in the game is the original shotgun (yes it has that special upgrade to do greater damage at a distance, but it's STILL outclassed in every stat by the Riot Gun, so it's really Riot Gun vs. Striker for that set of weapons). I suppose the same might be the case for the Killer7 vs. the Broken Butterfly (though of course the K7 has that nice starting damage and IIRC a faster reload/firing time) but I've never really examined the Killer7 closely because lol if you don't prefer the broken butterfly and/or the hand cannon ten times out of ten.

But I really like doing a playthrough on Professional with the Red9, basic shotgun, bolt-action rifle, and Broken Butterfly for some reason because they feel like older weapons.

By the way guys, the Mine Thrower is actually CRAZY fun if you FULLY upgrade it and get the scope. Once you've shot a heat-seeking mine into a crow that proceeded to fly into a group of Ganados and explode, you'll never want to go back. <3

this is why leon gets laid and you don't. leon has confidence; you're just a nerd on a internet.

what is the best one-liner in the entire game, ever

i nominate 'How rude! And I don't believe there's any relevance with my figure and my standing!' because it is a great example of actual blithering

krauser's nonsensical dialogue when you're knife-fighting him always gets me. it seems apropos of nothing, a smattering of lines that sound like they were pulled out of context from action movies.

It's nice to see Leon keeping some perspective.

I like his "Your right hand comes off?" line. :D

If i remember right, there was even a typo in the text. :lol

"You may be able to prolong your life, but it's not like you can escape your inevitable death, is it?"

Pulitzer Prize material there.

"Hmph, where's everyone going? ...Bingo?"

I also love the way Luis says this one so dramatically:
"Hah, Policia! You put your life on the line, no one really appreciates you for it. Being a hero isn't what it's cracked up to be anymore."

I wonder if this generation will see a game as good as Resident Evil 4.

in that genre? and that genre being, "person holding gun and shooting things"?

i'm gonna say no, no chance in hell.

Well, in any genre, really, to the extent that it's possible to evaluate it across genres against RE4 anyway (i.e. not comparing gunplay but basic level of polish/replayability/content/entertainment/art design/etc)

i mean, i actually think there a couple of games that i'd set right with it, but they're not even in the same genre or along the same thought process that lets me evaluate them together in any way.

Personally I'd say that Uncharted 2 and both Super Mario Galaxy games are truly great and have that level of ridiculous polish, solid gameplay, and plenty of variety to keep you interested, but that doesn't make them RE4-great even if they're clear candidates for game of the generation (so far), perhaps because they lack the feeling of incredible variety upon replays. RE4 seriously doesn't get old no matter how many times I replay it, and I don't know how many games I can ever say that for.

galaxy and galaxy 2 are the games which i was considering.
They're terrifically fun, extremely varied and polished to a blinding sheen, but as Himu said, I don't feel like they have the same replayability or bonus content (or the same sort of memorable cutscenes/presentation stuff) as RE4.

I'm going to avoid the RE5 argument with Himuro because it's happened recently enough anyway!

Haters gonna hate, etc. But this gen had two strong single player focused action games I consider on par with RE4

Bioshock - This would be what I consider the closest thing to RE4 this gen: It has the atmosphere, it is single player focused, it has a nice lengthy campaign. It falls short perhaps only in lacking replay value. I wish the PS3 new game + would come to the Xbox 360 version as I feel that would help. Nothing was as fun as breezing through RE4 on your 4th playthrough with maxed out weapons.

EDIT: Bioshock also had "fun" ungrade path options (like RE4) allowing for multiple playthroughs with different weapons and strategies. If anything, this was better in Bioshock than in RE4 because the former had both weapons and plasmids to customize.

Batman: AA - Very compelling world and story, great controls. Perhaps the boss fights are not as good as RE4.

As far as games that I replayed again immediately after the credits rolled (which RE4 was the first that ever made me do that), I did that with Batman Arkham Asylum. The Challenge Rooms are a good analogue to Mercenaries mode, too.

I don't have time to replay Resi4. Don't tempt me!!

I still haven't played Batman: AA
Good game, but a tad overrated 'round these parts. Last third of the game is rather bad.

By the way, did you get around to playing NMH2?

Ah, the dragon room. Kicked my ass on my first playthrough because I didn't realize you could just shoot the chains holding the dragons up to drop them straight into the lava instead of having to hit the actual guys on the dragons, and so it made that whole set piece a good deal more complicated for me.

To be clear, I'm not saying Batman AA is as good as RE4. Just that it's gotten closest to replicating the feeling of wanting to play it again.

Also I'm a Batman fan so that probably figures into it. So YMMV

I'd say Dead Space but Isac don't have personality, it seems Visceral is working hard on that for the sequel, so maybe Dead Space 2 is gonna be that game.

I got grudge sucked!
I picked up the GC version of RE4 on release day and didn't play it till a year and a 1/2 later (the PS2 version ) I think. By that time, the hype and reverence the game got, it just couldn't live up to, it was instantly sacred cow'd by gamers everywhere. I really liked it but it wasn't the be all, end all I was expecting. I think games like this require a second playthrough, not just because of the replayability it offers. I need to replay it because I know what to expect without hype or hyperbole. I think the best games shine through on the 2nd playthrough, which might be why RE2 is my favorite of the series. It never got old.

It's almost disappointing, though, because only having to shoot the chains makes the room really easy and less memorable (imo). Hell of a lot less frustrating though.

The older footage is interesting. The mansion stuff seems like the second rendition of the game. I like the atmosphere, but it looks slow and clunky compared to the final game. It was definitely for the better that they dropped this.

just finished it again last night. not as good as i remember.

. . . IT WAS BETTER.
I would just love to replay a version made with MT Framework. RE5 is just so incredible looking. Mixing the two games would be heavenly.

I mean, I killed the first 2 by shooting them to conserve some rifle ammo, but you guys! dur!

Now you're gonna tell me you didn't know you could shoot the bells to distract the Garradores.

That fucking cage. Get out of the cage and it's like shooting fish in a barrel. My first playthrough I tried to blow the door open with a grenade :lol

It didn't work.

The key is to skip the cutscene. Because it all happens in real-time (even in the prerendered cutscenes of the PS2 version), you get a few extra seconds to break down the cage door.

Holy shit guys just stop it!

Skipping the cutscene in the furnace area in the Island actually doesn't help you, they magically appear there.
