There is no Xbox 'Series S'

If Lockhart was just an Xbox One X profile, I wonder where Windows Central dug up that 4TF details and all that? If true, we've really spent a lot of time thinking over this unicorn. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Lockhart has nothing to do with Xbox One X

4 TF of RDNA2 = 6 TF of Xbox GCN. There is only one GDK for next gen and its supposed to mimic the Xbox One S/X.

Xbox One X officially discontinued... I called it guys, Series X will just replace the X1X as a niche console for those who absolutely demand 4k and 60fps, while the 4Tflops Lockhart/Series S will actually be their base next gen console.

Somehow I knew a 12Tflops base console was too good to be true, but 4Tflops? That barely sounds like an upgrade :(

Where do you people come up with this stuff?

So is there an Xbox series S or not? How could they possibly announce a series S after all this hype for the series X? How?

Ok, but I stand by what I said, Series S is not a clever way to name it.
Series X (insert word) would have been better

Series X Lite
Series X Mini
Series X Qube (shortened to Series X Qu)
Series X Core
Series X Slim

This will make it a bit more confusing when getting across which games the Series S is able to actually play. every game also now needs a compatible with Series S text on the top just how they already say Xbox One and Series X at the front of the cover.

Their logic is pretty basic.

The market has existed for a couple of years with One S and One X being what MS has been selling. They play the same games, the X plays them better.

They are just bringing that into the new generation with the awkward "Series" replacing "One."

I think you guys are reading the "Series" aspect wrong; it's not the "X Series" it''s the "Xbox Series". A series of Xbox's, not a series of devices branded X.

I get that, I still think Series X Lite or something similar would have been preferable.

I don't really care either way

I admit I've been out of the "Microsoft loop" after the 360 days, but isn't this a bit like the same marketing mistake Nintendo made with the Wii-U branding?

This thread was reminiscent of a flat-earther. "I don't care how much evidence there is, I've convinced myself, therefore it is true".

I will just get one for PC. Thank God it still uses batteries. I also hope it will work with current dongle

It's all very weird. I see Microsoft attempting to get its product lines... in line. The naming convention of the Xbox consoles has been pretty terrible up until now, and I don't envy the folk who's job it is to unpick that ball of twine. With the idea of two SKUs, they need clear product delineation. PlayStation is out there doing the Lord's work with a proper numbering system and the Slim and Pro revisions. It's all so easy to understand. I see this generation as Microsoft's move to get their naming conventions sorted, so they can run two SKUs cleanly.

Xbox Series X. The high end next-gen enthusiast machine.
Xbox Series S. The low end next-gen budget machine.

Xbox Series 2X. The high end next-next-gen enthusiast machine.
Xbox Series 2S. The low end next-next gen budget machine.

Xbox Series 3X. The high end next-next-next-gen enthusiast machine.
Xbox Series 3S. The low end next-next-next-gen budget machine.

And so on. It falls closer to the way the Surface line is named and numbered, and its extremely simple for the consumer to understand.

Nothing, because it's not something that's going to exist in the way people are thinking. We're talking stuff that came to light in 2018 with veiled context, no one even knows what that actually means, it's hypothesized.

We already know Series X hardware will be going into the xCloud server farms, what if that codename was the indicator of that? There's so many other directions this could have taken that doesn't result in some second console, hell it could be an old and dead concept.

Do you remember Anthem? That's the codename of Xbox One S hardware in the xCloud beta server farms. All I'm seeing is misconstrued and outdated information which has gone well beyond its expiration date.
Tick..tick..tick... That's the sound of the Series S theory running out of time.
How about a ban bet? Why not make it interesting. 1 month.

Never wise to claim definitives when you can't possibly know! So many people fall into that trap! I am not predicting a thing about next gen, because how the hell would I know? Assumptions are cool, but make it clear they are just that!

I'm sure I'm going to catch some flack for this but so be it. They've already explained the Series X name and it's been easily understood for me since square one. It's a simple convention really if you look at it abstractly.

What was the Xbox One X relative to the Xbox One/S? It was the X SKU of the One branding, in that series of consoles it was the X. X is to Microsoft the peak of compute, design, there is nothing better, it is symbolic of power. The Xbox Series X is exactly that as well. It's not the implication of belonging to a literal series, it's the inference of it being the peak of design possibilities as a platform out of the gate.

Look at it this way, this is the Xbox One.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) S (SKU)
  • Xbox (manufacturer) One (branding) X (SKU)
This is Series X.

  • Xbox (manufacturer) Series X (branding)

There is no Series S, Series X isn't a SKU, it's the generational branding and name of their next-gen platform. Series S is the result of people confusing what Series infers as a name on the back of the Xbox One, they're thinking of it literally as it relates to that platform rather than symbolically.
WHERE YOU AT RODDY PIPER? YOU GONNA COME SAY HI?

I can't wait for the announcement of Xbox Series E, that way I can arrange it the way it was intended.

Xbox Series S
Xbox Series E
Xbox Series X

I wonder what Microsoft is trying to tell me...

seems the Arabs are leaking stuff again :messenger_face_screaming:

PS5 leak incoming?

That said, i wonder why MS is with holding Lockhart, just fucking announce it. They could be waiting to under-cut Sony. I guessss

I always thought Spencers line about not losing the performance or price war was a reference to the Series X (performance) and the Series S (price).

Not announcing it for so long does feel strange.

Yeah I can only speculate that it's about "how much" you want to undercut Sony, not if, in reference to the series S. But it is indeed strange they haven't even announced it's existence yet -- when it's likely 3 months from launching.

Maybe it's a matter of lessening the blow when they announce the Xbox Series X price, but still, it's fucking strange. When are they going to give the "Ta Da!" moment? 2 months from release?

It's been rumored for August for awhile now soooooo ... maybe we will find out quite soon. :messenger_beaming:

The cheap price of the Series S still won't impact the sales of the PlayStation 5, because it will be nullified by the system's weak level of power. People will rather pay $399 for the PlayStation 5 digital for a full, proper next-gen experience.
