- The dragon made of flame in the OP for the Lodoss TV series (not the crummy dragons that slide across the screen - the one with the awesome animation).

- any of the dragons in Escaflowne

- obviously the dragon in Spirited Away!

I do like the dragon Haku in Spirited Away.
Really cool looking.

Ohh god. Cutie.

Only one right answer

MHFf29h.gif

Also this gives me an excuse to pimp the Dragon Half manga. If you liked the anime like I did then read the manga if you get the opportunity because it's better and is actually a complete story.

This is really the right answer though. Best dragon forever.
Love you Mink!

Time to start a best Dragons in anime discussion.

- obviously the dragon in Spirited Away!
Missing the most important one:
  • Haku
  • Lodoss dragons
    [*]Kanada animated one in Harmageddon
  • topcraft animated Smaug
  • Pink

We have a winner!

Thanks to Twitter for alerting me to this, but there's a new PV up for Captain Earth on the show's website.

Something about this show is pushing all my hype buttons despite not being a big mecha fan. Beautiful background art, Igarashi's usual skill at storyboarding/direction, nice music (love the vocal track) and an intriguing "mood" to the whole thing. I know the character designs and names for the bad guys are a bit silly, and it could all go a bit E7:AO on us, but I am allowing myself to look forward to this one :)

World Conquest 07

So everything progressed naturally from the end of the previous episode
until Kate was taken over by something Udo-related and turned into a giant monster that went on a rampage with an intent to conquer things. That was kind of weird. And then the end of the episode hinted that Asuta and Kate might be brother and sister, and the children of the governor - the girl in his photo had a rabbit doll, that's enough of a hint.
This just opened up a whole bunch of avenues for the future, and I can't wait to see where it goes. This show's a real treat to watch every week.

Music sounds pretty nice and the character designs are wonderful. Hoping it takes place a bit more in space than on Earth.

Man the chara design are step down from Star Driver.

But that's pretty good trailer, the mech are great, good music.. and intriguing space setting, yum.

I got my Time of Eve Evlend Coffee Canister signed by the man himself!

AlltheAnime/Anime Limited (I forget what I'm specifically supposed to call them...), the UK licensors for Patema Inverted, flew director Yasuhiro Yoshiura over for a screening of the movie, followed by a brief QA session, today. No particularly deep cuts in the discussion, but I’ll paraphrase what I remember - bare in mind that this is a truncated version of the key points based on my memory of an on-the-fly translation I heard four hours ago augmented by some terrible shorthand notes, so don’t read anything too deep into an specific wording here or anything. Also skipping anything I didn’t think was particularly interesting and/or amusing.

- Apparently Yoshiura managed to lose a bet with AL director Andrew Partridge over the number of people in the audience who had seen Time of Eve - he seemed to be really, really lowballing in terms of his expectations (in so much as just fifteen people having seen it was enough to win AP a pint). That said, AP did hand him an extremely expensive looking bottle of whiskey for having won the Judges and Audience awards at last years SLA.

- He found the architecture (Edinburgh castle, and the Filmhouse cinema itself) pretty interesting. Also all the adverts before the movie, specifically calling out the trailer for the new Spike Jonze movie (Her) and “The Bacons” [*]

- Most (of not all) of the onscreen text in the film is in English. I hopefully caught the name right, but apparently Michael Arias (who I guess was the director of Tekkon Kinkreet?) assisted. Would probably explain why it’s 99% accurate (Absent is spelt Abcent at one point, if I was to get picky ^^;)

- Akira Yamaoka (Famed game music composer, mostly of Silent Hill fame I guess) did the Sound Design for the movie (all audio other than the VA and the music). Not the first movie he has done Sound Design for (apparently did work for the second Silent Hill LA movie, at least). Apparently there’s at least one sound effect (a klaxon noise) that’s recycled from Silent Hill - wasn’t specifically asked for, but Yoshiura felt like maybe Yamaoka “read his mind”.

- It’s uncommon, but Yoshiura apparently did voice direction himself. States that he has a background in acting, so it’s something he felt he wanted to do himself.

- The movies opening sequence uses dialogue in Esperanto, as does the closing theme. He said it’s because his image of Esperanto was of “something people wanted to popularise but kind of failed at”, which he felt fit the image of the movie (^^;?)

- AP mentions that it’s a film that doesn’t necessarily at first look like an actual story, but that it has a lot of details that can be picked up on, allowing you to discuss and read into things (specifically calls out being a little confused about the
Sky Factory
at first, a conversation I’ve also had with other people, FWIW). Yoshiura comments that whilst he wanted it to be a broadly appealing movie, he also likes geeky films with a lot of interesting details. Whilst he wanted to make sure that he presented a relatively simply story about a hero and heroine with
a happy ending
on one level, he also likes to make films which raise questions which can be answered by thinking about things in a logical sense.

- In relation to the above, when answering a later question about the amount of detail put into the setting (and details like eye colour and the differing design ethos between Aiga and the below-ground folks), he also posits that the spirit of a film is in the details - he believes that a seemingly excessive amount of detail is the right amount of detail you should be imbuing a movie with. (Personal note - still love the orange Banana’s and red-and-black striped Bumblebees in the drawing in child-Patema’s bedroom).

- A production like this takes around one year of preparation/planning work, and a further year and a half of actual production to complete.

- When asked if he deliberately imbued his films with subversive political themes (1984 was called out during the question, to which Yoshiura responded, in English, “I like this film”), he said that whilst his works have various themes, in the case of Patema he was mostly focused on making an entertainment movie, and it wasn’t entirely intentional a move. That said, movies he watches may unintentionally influence him during production (when asked about the overarching themes of his works later, he suggested that he might just subconsciously like these kinds of themes).

- The design of the underground world is inspired somewhat by French comics (he might have mentioned a specific work/name here, but I didn’t catch it). Aiga is influenced by general Modernist designs, but specifically mentions some influence from Indian city Chandigarh.

- His life motto is “Preservence is Power!”

- Most of the character names (he started out by saying “the underground characters”, but later admitted it was pretty much the case for everyone in the movie) are named after figures from books he likes. Specifically calls out the author Yastaka Tsutsui (He specifically mentioned Paprika, though I assume that’s because he figured most people in the audience would know the Satoshi Kon adaptation, though he also wrote The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).

- His Anime Mirai short, Harmonie, was apparently finished just before he flew out on this trip (presumably before he headed for France for a recent screening of Patema, rather than specifically the UK leg). Whilst he thinks it’s thematically a different work than Time of Eve and Patema (though he states that the fact he was playing in the same thematic ground there wasn’t entirely intentional), he definitely thinks it’s a “more bitter” work.

[*] - SLA injoke. The “please switch off your phone” message that plays in many UK cinemas is sponsored by a mobile phone network who used Kevin Bacon in their advertising. Obviously, once you are subjected to the same advert 8-10 times over a course of a weekend (16-18 times over two if you do Glasgow and Edinburgh), it takes on a certain memetic quality. AP called the Bacon advert out as well. this was todays example.

Yea the music pieces are already standing out. The one at the end was pretty alien noir-ish which I'm liking a lot.

The jumpsuit designs seem somewhat busy but they fit the orange haired girl really well.

I am so bored of that advert. The campaign's been running for a year now - I hope EE come up with something new soon...

Why does Captain Earth even bother having an official Twitter account if they refresh the entire fucking site and say nothing about it...

Seriously, they made no official mention of new stuff ANYWHERE and just left it for people to find the updated site? That's the most incredibly fucking stupid thing I've seen. I'm almost not even sure if I want to watch the show anymore.

We got the "No Brainer" advert for most of SLA last year, so this was at least a change, but yeah, as someone who frequents the cinema semi-frequently (and not just for anime, despite what it may sometimes seem like!), it's getting real old.

One thing I like about the main mech for Captain Earth is the lack of feet. It feels like the mech was designed more for space combat due to that. The enemy mech, the purple one, also looks like the Cybodies from Star Driver.

Edit:Also one of the few times that I'm liking shaky cam and feel it's appropriate. Using it in the space shuttle launch animation is reminiscent of actual footage.

This is one of those moments when a proportional response would be appropriate :p It's not that big a deal - don't let it stop you watching the show if you're interested! While I don't disagree that it's a bit ridiculous not to update their Twitter feed, this sort of thing happens relatively regularly with anime.

Fine, have another brown girl.

Calling madp - you've got your Girlock Holmes right here...

(a reminder - this is the newtaminA show airing alongside Ping Pong, Nanana's Buried Treasure)

Log Horizon Episode 21:

So we end the arc with a grand ball and not going to lie, kind of wanted to see the Goblin King die in a grand battle but I am willing to bet the budget was just not there for it. At any rate, yea, this was pretty much ship tease porn and also a decent example of how to use your time skips to move along the plot. We also see the seeds for the next arc being planted as the West is beckoning. It really doesn't feel like we only have three episodes left.

log horizon is 25 not 24 eps

you have 4 more eps to look forward to , not 3

Space Brothers - 95

After hearing Betty story, she made remember of a new teacher I got this semester who has a story straight out Space Brothers. Principally the part
here where Betty says everyone objected when she said she wanted to return being an astronaut, and only Chris would tell her that it was okay.
After hearing my teacher story I find this kind of story to be more believable.
Is A-1 still having problems with english or is Tack(Instead of Tuck) a common name, and that EPRON.

I haven't seen a single show in the last few seasons that has maintained an official account and failed to update it like clockwork along with site updates, or at least if they don't then some site like moca or animate.tv usually does, or if they don't then at least the usual matome blogs pick up on it -- for something to go ignored this long by all of the above and initially only reported on by random people on Twitter until ANN of all people finally have to run an article on it is beyond absurd.

But anyway I'm just going to end the conversation here since it's going to go nowhere.

Son of a...

I was going to get that done but the queue was fairly long and I was with company who wasn't really fussed about getting a signature. Oh well.

No real point going over the Q&A but I definitely liked the film more the second time round I think since I was paying more attention to the film rather than the plot if that makes sense. My initial review mostly stands (as shit as it is) although I'd argue that there's still a vouple of plot holes that are only explained through brief mentions in the story but I think there's a number of neat little tricks that passed me by the first time.
A couple I liked (do not quote because these are serious Patema spoilers. you have been warned):
- The initial title shot with the sealed dome in the Earth is pretty throwaway and doesn't really imprint itself on your mind as anything important. It's not until the climax of the film and the reveal that the meaning of it being broken away and how it ties in that really hammers home. Really clever I thought.
- The "metal sky" as people keep calling it and it's appearance 2/3's of the movie probably triggers something in the more astute viewers but it's actually quite clever since the movie does a good job of making you more concerned about Age and Patema and their circumstances than about why there's a metal sky at all. It helps to keep the impact of the concluding scenes quite nicely.
- The numerous flips of the screen at major points is something I appreciate a lot more now, to the character's viewpoint's changing. Watching it a second time and keeping the idea of Age being the wrong way round makes for an interesting experience which I guess was the intention.

Tying in with that last spoiler point, it was interesting how many people struggled with some of the concepts of the movie when I saw it. Looking forward to seeing more posts about it when it get's a proper release into the wild.

Edit: Also, I zoned out again in the final shot and missed (spoiler)
the deal with Lagos' note? letter? that the Cheif was reading.

Brown girls are the best. It's why Homura is my favorite Senran Kagura girl. Though I feel Robotics;Notes' Junna needs more love.

Did anyone post details about that new show? I must have missed it. Looks neat.

Someone posted various bits of promo art back when it was announced but I basically rolled my eyes at the art and the words "light novel adaptation" then kind of ignored it :p

To steal ANN's synopsis:

ANN said:
The story centers around the treasure of Nanana, a ghost who was once a beautiful but NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) girl. A boy named Jūgo was disowned by his father and forced to transfer to a high school on the "Special Student Zone," an artificial island. With only 40,000 yen (about US$500) a month to live on, Jūgo chooses a low-rent apartment that happens to be haunted by Nanana. Jūgo and members of the school's adventure club join a "treasure hunt royale" on the island for the Nanana Collection, a treasure that possesses a mysterious power.

Perhaps I shouldn't pre-judge based on the art, but I'm not filled with confidence myself.
